They added the button fly in the late 1800's. Most Levi's sold in the US have the zipper, but the 501 will always have the button fly. I'm pretty sure Strauss had something to do with it.

Since you saw the show, did they ever say if it's true about the crotch rivet story?

They said they got rid of it during WW II to help the war effort. They didn't mention anything about campfires though.
