Exciting news!
Peter Jackson and New Line Cinema have mended their strained relationship. The two were bitterly and publicly fighting over profits from the Lord of the Rings franchise.
On Tuesday, it was announced that Jackson would produce The Hobbit and its sequel, both prequels to the Rings mythology.
Principal photography is expected to begin in 2009 - with films being staggered for a release in 2010 and 2011.
The movies will be shot simultaneously. (http://www.perezhilton.com/)

I think there's gonna be a prequel and then one or two sequels to the prequel. :wacko:That's my understanding of it.

Wasn't the story in the hoobit also called "there and back again"?
Maybe it could be, "The Hobbit: There..." and "The Hobbit II: and Back Again."
There is defenitely enough material in that book for two, if not three movies anyway.

I could see the first one ending when they first escape the Goblins and hundreds of Wargs gather underneath them or before they meet Beorn, because the meeting of Beorn would make a really good beginning of the second movie.
Either way, I'm really excited. I love Lord of the Rings.

They could probably even make it all the way to the Dale and still have a movie left.

Peter Jackson is going to be the producer of The Hobbit, the prequel to The Lord of the Rings.
New Line Cinema is still the movie studio that is marketing it.
Apparentley according to this story, it will be shot and be done as two movies.

Martin Freeman has officially landed the part of Bilbo Baggins in Peter Jackson's Hobbit movie. (http://io9.com/5670428/peter-jackson-announces-the-hobbit-cast-including-martin-freeman-as-bilbo)
This was a wise casting decision. But that's not all, Jackson released a list of dwarf castings. Here they are:
Richard Armitage (Captain America) will play Thorin Oakenshield, leader of the Dwarves who all wanted to reclaim their ancient dwellings inside the Lonely Mountain which was destroyed by the dragon Smaug and leader of Bilbo's Dwarf pack as well.
Aidan Turner (smoldering hot vampire from BBC's Being Human) and Rob Kazinsky (EastEnders, Timeless) have been cast as the Dwarf brothers Kili and Fili. They're the nephews of Thorin and a bit comical at times. They are definitely the youngest of the bunch.
Graham McTavish (Secretariat) is Dwalin, the first dwarf to arrive at the home of Bilbo Baggins at Bag End.
John Callen will play Oin, a dwarf who's not crazy about Bilbo.
Stephen Hunter (Spirited) has been cast as Bombur, the fattest and sleepiest of the bunch.
Mark Hadlow (King Kong) is Dori, the biggest and strongest dwarf who constantly carries Bilbo about.
And finally, Peter Hambleton will play Gloin, brother of Oin. Also it should be noted that Gloin is Father of Gimli's Dad (from The Lord of the Rings).
As far as the non-dwarf roles (Elves and Wizards) Deadline is reporting that David Tennant (among a few other surprising names) is still in the running.
The bad news is that because of some kind of actor or production strike, The Hobbit may have to be filmed somewhere other than New Zealand, which I can't imagine any other place would fit in for Middle Earth without using vasts amounts of CGI.

Good news....
New Zealand prime minister John Key announced Wednesday that production of "The Hobbit" will stay in-country, local broadcast outlet Tvnz reports.
Agreement to keep the Peter Jackson-directed film in Kiwi country follows face-to-face negotiations between high-level local government officials and co-producer/distributor Warner Bros.
Producers for the film threatened to bolt New Zealand, after a local talent union -- backed by the Screen Actors Guild and the American Federation of TV and Radio Artists -- threatened to boycott the production.

11 new images show off Peter Jackon’s gorgeous Middle-Earth in The Hobbit (http://io9.com/5923103/11-new-images-show-off-peter-jackons-gorgeous-middle+earth-in-the-hobbit)
Entertainment Weekly has released a handful of stills from The Hobbit for their big Comic-Con debut, and on the cover is Bilbo Baggins and Gandalf looking quite stately. Inside the issue is a collection of revealing Hobbit snaps including the dwarves all tucked away in their escape barrels. Plus, look how director Peter Jackson has managed to make sexy Tolkien dwarves — take a look at Aidan Turner as Kili. How odd yet delightful!

The 48 frames per second format has caused a lot of controversy.
I've seen the 24 frames per second 3D and frankly that was dizzying at times.
I will be seeing the other on Monday.
The Hobbit is a small source compared to the Trilogy for three movies but this first one is pretty crammed with story and action.

Saw The Hobbit last night and really enjoyed it. It was fun and you can definitely tell that Peter Jackson filmed it in the same tone as the book was, meaning it was more light hearted and less dark compared to the LOTR trilogy. Definitely something to bring the kids to see.
I went to see this on IMAX 3D w/ 48fps, and I must say it was definitely distracting especially in the beginning, but eventually eyes adjusted to it after a couple of minutes. While I think it's gutsy for PJ to film it in that format, ultimately it didn't really needed to be filmed like that. Reason I went to see it in IMAX 3D/48fps was because I was curious as to how it looks in the big screen and wanted to check it out. (Plus the 9 minute preview of the new Star Trek movie was definitely a nice bonus)
I might check it out again next week or so, but only in 2D format.
I liked it but it was so goddamn long. I can't ever see myself being able to watch it in one sitting ever again. If they could cut this to 1:30 to 2 hours it would be awesome. Too bad it's almost 3.

Well, the previous Lord of the Ring trilogy were 3 hours each (Return of the King being 3+ hours) when they came out a decade ago. In fact, The Hobbit is 10 minutes shorter than Fellowship of the Ring. Anyhoo, I was expecting The Hobbit movie to be long anyway and I'm sure the next two movie will be the same as well.

There was a lot of source material to draw from the original trilogy. They are now making a trilogy roughly the same length as the previous one from a third of the source material. And it really showed. I don't want to give scenes away but there were two that could have been easily cut as they served very little point.
I spent much of the movie wondering how much longer it was going to be. By the end it fianlly hit a stride but then it ended.
Dude!

I enjoyed the movie as well, and yea, the high rate film was strange at first - in fact, it seemed like Bilbo was moving too quickly in the opening scenes. Or was that just my eyes? In some scenes - close-ups mostly - you could see the make-up and fake prothetics on the dwarves faces. But other scenes, like the escape from the goblin's lair, looked amazing, especially in 3D.
I'm not sure if I'm on with that new technology. I'll have to compare it in normal format as well.
