On a serious note modern nuclear energy is much much much much safer than most people realize and I think this could be a great idea on a local basis as long as its heavily regulated.

If you thought the Periodic Table was bad, wait until you have to study the Chart of the Nuclides. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Isotope_table_%28complete%29) This is a small piece of one. We had massive wall posters in this nuclear physics class I took once. You can look up any isotope and follow it's decay pattern.
