I picked up Batman #686, the start of the Whatever Happened To The Caped Crusader arc by Neil Gaiman.
It reminds me a little of what Morrison was doing with Last Rites, but I like it better. It definitely has a Sandman feel to it as well.
so is this story based on earth 2? i was a little confused at first when reading this issue. didn't really like the catwoman story, but loved the gentleman's gentleman story. looking forward to the conclusion of this.
also, i really enjoyed the last issue of nightwing that came out yesterday.

I'm guessing no for a variety of reasons. First, Barbara Gordon is in a wheelchair. Then you see the version of the Joker and Harley Quinn from Batman the Animated Series, and that Joker is different than the one who appeared in the Jokermobile. And if you really look close, you can see Oliver Queen from The Dark Knight Returns. Also, we see a younger Selina Kyle at the beginning of the issue and an older one tells her story.

Loving this one and the Kubert/Williams art is just beautiful. Can't wait for part two.

There was two reasons why I didn't do the spoiler thing.
First, the whole issue plays up to this reveal in such a great way, that knowing this spoiler really takes away a lot from the issue. Arguably knowing it ruins the issue or at least may stop you from enjoying this book.
Second, I was on my blackberry and couldn't do the spoiler thing.
That being said, if you really want to know, here goes:
She knows stuff
If that means nothing to you, then telling you the name of the person will mean nothing to you.

Picked up a bunch of trades this past weekend.
Death of Capt. America vol. 3 and Criminal vol. 4, both by Brubaker.
All-Star Superman vol. 2 and Batman R.I.P. , both by Morrison.
What an awesome haul, since both guys are basically my favorite ad what I consider the most reliable comic writers out there right now. I'm continually stunned at how awesome and not awful Brubaker has made Captain America...and as for Morrison, well, HOLY SHIT. If Infinite Crisis is half as good as BRIP, I can't wait.
And AS Superman has to be the best Superman story of all time at this point. After finishing vol. 2, I went back and read vol. 1 again and went ahead ad read vol. 2 one more time. It's that amazing.

Yeah, got that mixed up.
I figure FC probably won't be as good since the scope is so much bigger, but I'm still looking forward to it. I'm so sick of DC superheroes that I need someone like Morrison to come in there and mix it up. I've never really gotten ino Geoff Johns as a writer because he plays it too safe and nothing ever really happens with him. He's very capable, but I'm never thrilled by ay of his titles...they're just sort of there.
I feel pretty much the same way, although I think Whatever Happened To The Man of Tomorrow and The Man Who Has Everything may be as good.
Love both, but I'll give it to AS Supes since it has such an amazing sense of wonder to it. It seems like like almost anything is possible within its pages.

Just spent the whole day reading the watchmen comic book. My wife bought me the hardcover collection. Have to say, one of the best written comics I have ever read. I am so looking forward to the movie. I don't think the movie will hold up, but it will just be cool to see the live action to the comic.
Just reading the comic and I realize the amount of influence the comic has on the current writers of today. Since I read so many comics before reading Watchmen I can see a influence, I can see Kingdom Come, and The Punisher Max series, the Garth Ennis, especially the Valley forge story.(Issue 55-60)
It is a real classic.

Watchmen was epic because of the timing. It coincided with the Dark Knight Returns and brought the dark and serious back to comics.

I have been following Drafted, and I want to know when the hell issue 13 is coming out. Issue 12 dropped a pretty big bombshell - although it was a little disappointing because so many other sci-fi stories have used the same premise and I was hoping for a little more creativity and development than the same old twist.
I tried looking for more info on the Devil's Due website, but it is almost as hard to navigate as FoundryMusic.com.

Is anyone else reading Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy, Nova, or War of Kings? I haven't been into much Marvel stuff lately but all three of these books(Only one issue of WoK so far) are terrific. Not to mention that Abnett and Lanning brought Jack Flag, last seen getting crippled in Ellis' Thunderbolts, back into the fray.

I enjoyed 1985, though I thought it seemed tremendously anti-climactic ater all the build-up over the rest of the book and the possibilities they could have gone with or explored further.
I have a copy of the of the first HC of Hitch and Millar's run on FF on hold at work. Is it worth checking out?

I stopped reading 1985, but apparently Millar has linked it to his FF story as well as his Old Man Logan story in Wolverine.
FF has been really good in some places, and really not good in others.
I am looking forward into the upcoming storyline where we meet Dr. Doom's mentor, who apparently has been roaming parallel Marvel earths and wiped out everyone.

This reminds me that one of the better costume alterations over the last few years was the changes to the Robin costume. Gone are the green tights. The red is still there, but they changed enough of it to make it a more acceptable costume.

My favorite comic books are Sandman, The Good, Alan Moore's Swamp Thing, Preacher, Red Son ( About Superman crash landing in USSR instead of USA),Wolverine Origins , Kick-Ass and something a little different called Death Note (reminds me of Dexter but published before the Dexter books).
Let me know what u think if you like any of them and also check out Ben Templesmith he's the artist that illustrated the original 30 days of Night!
The Gunslinger is also very cool a gritty, violent fantasy novel by Stephen King I'm sure I can think of more but these stand out.

More information about Batman and Robin from Grant Morrison and IGN.com. (http://comics.ign.com/articles/961/961488p1.html)
Some highlights. This series is going to be the "flagship" Batman title when it comes out. In Morrison's own words:
'Batman and Robin', which opens with the 3-part 'Batman Reborn' arc, is maybe more poppy, and more colourful, but it's also creepier. It's like David Lynch doing the Batman TV show. The story arcs are 4 short 3-part 'events', which combine to tell a longer, 12 part mystery.
Also:
It's much more…contentious. This is a very different Batman and Robin team from any that we've seen before. It's almost a reverse of the traditional dynamic, with a more light-hearted and spontaneous Batman and a scowling, badass Robin. Expect fireworks and violence.
My bet on this is that Batman is going to be Dick Grayson and Damien Wayne will be Robin.
Where does this leave Tim Drake? Maybe the new Nightwing. Or did Morrison leave a hint in the last issue of Batman RIP when a villain said:
Batman and Robin are dead!

Are you aware that The Gunslinger is the first book in King's seven book series The Dark Tower, and that Marvel has been adapting some of the stories (but not Gunslinger) into comics?
The only reason I ask is that I rarely see fans reference the Gunslinger alone, but rather talk about the whole Dark Tower series.

Personally, I was banking on ASB&R to be shit given Miller's track record over the last decade. Granted, I didn't expect to be as ridicuously bad as it was, but I was going to be stunned if it even managed to be average.
Morrison, on the other hand, has been by and large very successful and consistent with his takes on superheroes over his entire career until today. He hasn't really dropped off and his run on JLA alone includes some of the best takes on DC's flagship characters ever.
And yeah, I finally got to read R.I.P. and the books leading up to it. I really didn't like most of the art (too 1990's Image-y for me), but the story itself was fun and trippy. I realize I'm a Morrison fanboy and I've read way too many old Batman comics, so I knew most of the characters he was digging up, but I think as a whole it works really well.

Oddly enough this book sold pretty well from a business stand point. We constantly heard from regular Batman fans the same complaints that everyone brings up here, but the Miller zombies all just kept buying it. There was also the Lee factor. No matter how bad the book was Lee's art and covers were dynamic. People bought the look and collected without reading I think.

Sure, Miller's name is going to be a draw, but I think most people who kept buying it because of him was due to curiosity to see how insane it was going to get, especially given how inconsistently it was put out.
You're definitely right about Lee. It could be a series written by a monkey and people would flock to it if Lee was doing the art.

I like it. The art is great, and the writing is so over-the-top and ridiculous (especially the Green Lantern issue). Batman and Robin have been in so many bizarre interpretations over the years, with the TV show, cartoons, movies, Super Friends, etc that I don't think "Sin City Batman" is going to do any harm to the character.

Personally, I don't think it "harms" anything. It's just bad writing. Next to none of it actually pertains to the characters we're seeing. I love off-the-wall writing of big characters like that, but I at least expect them to be at least just a little recognizable. Outside of scattered superficial things like everything painted yellow, they all just sound like random stock cliche Frank Miller "nu-noir" characters.

My problem with All-Star Batman has always been two-fold. First, he's not what DC advertised. The All-Star line was touted as sort of taking the best of Batman and Superman from their various iterations in comics, movies, tv, etc. and putting them together in a way that isn't beholden to the current continuity. That's what All Star Superman was, but not All Star Batman. All Star Batman is simply Miller's DKR Batman at an earlier stage.
Second, I just don't find it entertaining. I don't like a Sin City Batman, and I didn't like him in The Dark Knight Strikes Again.

I actually thought the All-Star Batman was Miller thumbing his nose at DC, and the current DC regime not getting it. I have talked to sales reps at the company who have thought the same thing.(it gave them a chance to laugh at their bosses,so that may have been part of their opinion too) It really seemed to be written without much thought or effort on Millers part. By the way I do like Miller too, I liked Dark Knight, his Daredevil changed the way comics were written and drawn, and its still one of the best main stream comic reads there is, and I love Sin City. I just think in this book he took the money and ran.

Of course I disagree with that. His Dark Horse stuff is his own creation. Those stories he has full control over. There are no expectation of the material other then what he made of it. As far as the Spirit goes a lot of Eisner fans do think that's exactly what he did. I believe he is a Spirit fan who got caught up in a fascination with movie tricks and just missed the mark. I think he missed with the latest Martha Washington stuff, but it was true to the original, just not that satisfying. The Dark Knight sequel was pretty much phoned in and actually sold poorly, which was unexpected. Like I said I admire Miller, but his later work is hit or miss, and I think the reason behind that is whether he is in to it or not.

I do admire a lot of Miller's work up until about about 15 years ago. Like you said, he fucked up Martha Washington. In my opinion, the last few Sin City collections were like weak parodies of the series when it was at its best. That Spirit film was an abomination. He seemingly tried to get everything about the characters and the spirit and style of Eisner's strip as wrong as possible. Everything he does now is just a mishmash of his jumbled "nu-noir" style. The mysogyny that was aways underlying in his work has exploded all over everything he does. Every woman he writes is either a whore, men-haters, a villain, a betrayer or just there to be fucked, or some combination of them all. For him to be so explicitly a mysogynist in a medium like comics is depressingly impressive. I can picture him and Dave Sim hanging out together and ranting about women on the weekends.
Everything he's written over the last 10-15 years is weighed down by his ridiculous, overblown, Libertarian versions of Ayn Randian philosophies. I have zero probem with political perspectives in comics, but his is such an overreactionary, unrealistic and fearmongering mess since he dumps it all over everything.
And man, I do not get why 300 is considered one of his better works. It's all of these things cranked to 11.

According to DC, the above is not true. All Star has nothing to do with Marvel's Ultimate line, but we all know better.
As for the Ultimate line rebooting, that's how it's looking. I blame Jeph Loeb.
The line probably need it because Ultimate X-Men, FF and Ultimates 3 aren't really good.
But Ultimate Spidey and the first two Ultimates were some of the best stuff Marvel did from 2000-2006.

We have been saying this about him since Daredevil. His treatment of the long time women in that book as well as every woman he brought into it just screamed out a problem with the whole gender. It was kind of funny back then, think about it, a comic geek who didnt get women so he wrote these atrocious parodies of them. In the last fifteen years tho it just gets sad, and you wish he could write something different. I think the lone exception to this is Sin City, not because it isnt mysogonystic, but because it revels in that genre. It doesnt make it a side plot or pass itself off as reality.

Yeah, it's easier to explain away in SC since it fits in with the other exagerrated archetypes he's using, but otherwise his depiction of women (and homosexuals, with whom he definitely buys into the "that's the worst thing you can call a man" in all seriousness) has gotten apalling. He's not even trying to dress up how much he looks down on them.
Look at his depictions of women in ASB&R. (http://www.i-mockery.com/comics/longbox20/default.php)

Martha Washington.
Any of the times he's written Wonder Woman, but he "fixes" that by writing her as an awful man-hater.
His Daredevil work is fantastic, but even there he felt the need to turn Karen Page into a drug-addicted porn "star" who sells out DD's identity for a fix.
Notice that his retcon of Catwoman involved making her a hooker (and he made her a madam for TDKR).

There are. This is the slowest schedule for a series I've ever seen. Not sure if it's being done on purpose or just because it's such a bear to draw. Perez is usually very good with keeping a schedule even on when a huge cast of characters is involved so I doubt it's on him but who knows?

At some point, in the 1960's I believe Batman comics featured Batmen of All Nations. Knight was the Batman of England. Squire was essentially the Robin of England.
Grant Morrison featured the various Batmen of All Nations during his run on Batman that introduced the Black Glove group.

so this girl hope is the first mutant born since m-day?
why is cable deemed the protector of hope?
why is bishop trying to kill hope?

so this girl hope is the first mutant born since m-day?
Yes.
why is cable deemed the protector of hope?
A lot of people want Hope. The Purifiers/anti-mutant contingent want her dead. The evil mutants want her to be one of them. Cable as a time traveler could raise her in the future away from those who want to hurt her or take her.
why is bishop trying to kill hope?
As you may or may not know, Bishop is from the future or an alternative future. In that future, Hope leads to the deaths of many humans and mutants, which leads to the crackdown on mutants and where mutants like Bishop are branded and raised in camps. Bishop thinks that if he kills Hope as a baby/child, that future will not happen.
what exactly are stryfe's power?
Asssuming he is the original Stryfe, he is Cable's clone but without the techno-organic virus that Cable has. As a result, he has Cable's telekinesis and telepathy, but at higher levels.
someone in the issue said the age of apocalypse will be nothing compared to the age of stryfe. what exactly was the age of apocalypse?
In 1995 or so, Marvel ran a storyline where Prof. X's son Legion traveled back into the past to kill Magneto. However, Prof. X sacrifices himself and gets killed instead, thus creating an alternate timeline. In that timeline, Apocalypse comes to power over America and Magneto leads the X-Men in Xavier's beliefs. Almost everything about that timeline is different, but it is a nightmare timeline.

I'm not disagreeing because of "good will" based upon other stories that Brubaker has written. I'm disagreeing because I liked the story arc, in particular the theme that Bucky as Cap will have to deal with some of his past as Winter Soldier. Plus I liked the interplay with Namor and Black Widow.
So in my mind he is writing the kind of stories needed for Marvel's oldest superhero.

You miss my point. I am not saying that he is coasting on previous accomplishments. I am saying that he has a lot of fans based on the stories he tells on a monthly basis. I don't expect people to agree with me because folks generally enjoy what he puts out.
Also I had no problem with the Winter Soldier character when he was first introduced. I just don't want to read about his monthly adventures in Captain America. Besides, comics that don't or only lightly follow the rest of the line's continuity always bug me.

I prefer those comics. I see no reason why the Batman comics would have to put their stories on hold to accomodate events happening in Superman or Green Lantern or whatever. Shared universes are fun, but not the raison d'etre of superhero comics.

I'm not talking about comics that have to be interrupted every 6 months for the latest line wide crossover. I'm talking about books that ignore previously established continuity or don't reference current events that feature their lead character on other comics. Example, Captain America is now in the New Avengers. When will this be featured in Cap's solo book?
Another example is Bendis handling of Ares and his son from the Ares mini. He basically jettisoned whatever he felt like about the characters without a hint of explanation.

So it's better to have comics in Marvel's universe be completely separate entities? As much as I dislike Bendis' Avengers books, if they're featuring Captain America, there should be some mention of it in his book. If not, why not give every title its own continuity? What then is the point of a shared universe?
TheMojoPin
04-11-2009, 09:21 PM
A solo title's obligation should be to the main character. If I wanted to read about Captain America as a member of the Avengers, I'd read the Avengers.
Personally, I stopped getting hung up on continuity a long time ago. I find it limits creativity too often. I don't want it totally tossed out the window, but it doesn't bug me if Captain America isn't depicted in the Avengers in his own title.
Besides, characters like Iron Man and Captain America have had relatively little Avengers-related storylines in their solo titles over the decades.

So, I've really been liking J. Michael Straczynski's Thor. He brought back Thor and the rest of the Asgardians in a convincing way, has brought great twists to their mythos, and has really portayed Loki well in terms of being a manipulater of events. Loki's machinations against Thor and the rest of Asguard have been incredible.
Now with that being said, I did have one huge complaint about yesterday's issue, which was great. The complaint? I don't see Dr. Doom ever, EVER using Wikipedia! I loved the gaiman batman story. I pulled out the first issue and reread both a few hours after the first reading of part two. I loved the stories some of the villians told, esp the clayface one, even if it was only like three panels.
I think it really sucks there was such a long delay between the two issues. But all in all, the quality of the issues were worth the wait.
I'm also glad they included some of the kubert sketches at the end of the issues. I love seeing the original finished pencils before the inks go on.

Kubert did a fantastic job. Most times when an artist does an homage to other artists styles it's jarring seeing the different looks and can take you out of the story. Kubert was very subtle aping the widely different styles of Robinson, Sprang, Infantino, Bolland, Sienkiewicz and others and making it all appear seamless.
Award-winning effort! Worth the wait.

Wouldn't be unusual. Being a comic book artist/writer typically wasn't a very well-paying job for the first 50 years or so the medium was around. Most of the creators had additional jobs doing cartooning in other publications or drawing for advertising and such. A lot of them did plenty of "dirty" books to help pay the bills.

Well, technically, Rachel Summers was kicking Gladiator's ass while Rocket held a mop. Then Gladiator caught on and kicked Rocket's ass.

I know they have been mentioned in this thread and I've heard how great both stories are, but I've never bought the trades. The first issue of both transmetropolitan and planetary are really incredible.
With the what's after the watchmen campaign a bunch of great books are a dollar each for the first issue. I had a light week and decided to pick them both up. I am so glad I did. Gonna be picking up both in trades now which is bad in a way because I'm low on funds and gonna want all the trades at once.
The first issue of transmet is probably one of the best first issues I have ever read.

They are doing a mini series about other characters from the Iron fist series. Each month will focus on a different character. I am not sure how long it will run.

Iron Fist was never nearly as interesting as Shang-Chi. I wish they'd have a decent writer take a shot at that series.
As a kid I loved the whole Kung Fu/MI6 thing, kinda like Bruce Lee meets James Bond.

Shang-Chi was badass, but it's one of the few series that actually had a really conclusive and satisfying wrap-up. A big part of me really just wants them to leave it alone since it finished up so strong.

Batman and Robin #1 came out this week, and I thought it was pretty good. The dynamic between the new Batman and Robin will definitely be a dynamic that we hadn't seen before between Batman and Robin. And Morrison and Quitely are up to their own "eccentric" storytelling, especially with the new villain "Pyg." The guy, his minions, and his "methods" really creeped me out.

You've maybe got $20 worth of comics there, and that's probably being generous.

I really wish all of Doom 2099 would be collected. The initial run of the series is decent enough, but then when Warren Ellis took over as writer and had Doom conquer the USA, that was a great storyline.

I never read it. I wonder if Marvel has it available online with their online collection.
doom was awesome. i like spidey2099 also.
cable might get you somethin, the new series is pretty good and cable's first appearance in new mutants gets a little bit of coin. not sure about the reg series tho but good to hold onto.
some of the less important books might get something, what are some of those?

I thought about subscribing to Marvel Online, but the page movement is so awkward I didn't pull the trigger. It's bad enough reading a CBR/PDF version of a book, but throw in less maneuverability and it just isn't worth it.
However, if they could clean up the viewer it would probably be worth it.

i dropped the old man logan after the second issue. it wasn't cause i didn't like it, but was spending way too much at the comic shop. dropped just about of all of the marvel i was reading. plus, i need money for my dc books.
ive found myself starting to drop some marvel as well. with marvel i feel like i can come back in again when things get better and not miss a beat, but with dc books something keeps me wanting to stick with it. unless it is taken over by judd winick, of course.:nono:

i dropped a bunch of marvel for the awful secret invasion tie ins. then i had absolutely no interest in dark reign. dark avengers? blech. only thing i am still reading is x-force and cable and will probably drop cable once the messiah war crossover is finished. will keep x-force though. oh, and i picked up deadpool this week cuz i kinda enjoyed the first issue of the current arc with bullseye.
also, not very impressed by winick's first issue of the new batman.
i still cannot believe i would actually enjoy a cable book, and actually be excited to read new issues. who woulda thunk it.

I don't mind issues getting delayed. Once in while, but Kick Ass is like a year and half delayed. This is crazy. It has been so long I forgot what is going on. what bothers me more is that I am finding out about the comic from the movie info rather then reading it.
I know i asked this before, but the ghost box in the Xmen story, is it good, worth a TBP pick up, just what to see what people think and is it worth a pick up.

I think it's supposed to be August of 2010.
Either way I won't see it.
They've already destroyed all of my favorite childhood comics by turning them into movies, from Daredevil to the X-Men.
