Doesn't it just seem that when the x-men books get caught up in writers changes, and overload of different characters coming in and out, that's when they hit with an event to kind of re-organize the titles? I dont know i've never been a huge fan of any crossover, minus the old secret wars, which were just sooo good.

In hindsight, I really can't stand most of the 90's X-books. They really set the trend (birthed by Claremont himself right as he went to shit and never recovered) of starting numerous mysterious plotlines with no written or editorial conclusion drawn out and the purposeful idea to string them and us along as much as possible to stretch out story arcs. Barely anything had any kind of resolution and so much shit contridicted everything else on a monthly basis. I really just assume the X-Men and their various counterparts vanished sometime in the mid to late 80's and didn't re-emerge until Grant Morrison's New X-Men and Milligan/Allred's X-Force/X-Statix. Now they're dead to me again. Seeyuh in a decade or so, ladies and gents!

I dont know i thought they wrapped up the Muir island saga pretty well
I think the way that New Mutants ended and X-Force started was done pretty well, but when they start getting into clone things thats when i call it quits as it is to hard to understand who is what and what is who
But there were a lot of things that did get left hanging like the way Shatterstar just appeared conveniently when Cable was forming X-Force and same thing with Feral just way to conveneient to me
But the X books were better then what was happening in FF and Iron Man and Avengers at the time
I mean really whooo hydro base is destroyed

I thought it all pretty much sucked, Marvel and DC (though I read almost everything like a junkie). By 1994 I was pretty much only really enjoying Vertigo and Vertigo-esque titles like a homo snob.
I really liked the Valiant titles the first couple of years they were around, and then a lot of the Dark Horse stuff. The 90's were a pretty barren time creatively for the Big Two. And I gave up on Image after their first year, though they've finally come around this century to become what they should have been at the bginning...distribution and creators' rights (unless you created something for MacFarlane) and exposure for new creators and their creations as opposed to just knockoffs of major DC and Marvel heroes written by overrated artists.

I don't know -- I only pick up Astonishing X-Men and it's been a great read. Maybe that's the trick: just by ONE X-Book and live in blissful ignorance of all the others. Might save you some frustration Mojo.
Hell, remember when there was only one book, The Uncanny X-Men? And what the f**k does "Uncanny" mean??

He's one of the chief writers of the DC Universe now, along with Geoff Johns and Greg Rucka, when it comes to the giant events. He's been writing Batman, though it's just been OK. I don't know if All Star Superman is done, but it's been fantastic so far. He will be writing Final Crisis, and he's always said the Seven Soldiers play into this stuff pretty big, so expect to see them back for that. He's also doing the relaunches of WildCATS and The Authority, but there have been scheduling problems. Check out his New X-Men run, Sheepy. It's very cool and a bit of a head twister.
Whedon's X-men stuff has just felt like a total retread of Claremont's classic runs. I had really high hopes with Mike Carey ad Ed Brubaker taking on the other two major X-Men tiles, but even they have fallen kind of flat.
I've found my comic reading is much less stressful and more enjoyable so long as I pretend the X-Universe just doesn't exist.

I think the only thing Astonishing undid of Morrison's was the uniforms.

True. Bringing back Colossus was super lame, though that has nothing to do with aything Morrison did. They shoulda kept around someone cool like Fantomex instead.

I disagree. I thought Colossus' death was super lame, and that his resurrection was great. While I generally dislike resurrections of dead characters in comics (because it's done so often), I'll accept it if the way the character comes back is part of a good story. I think they had that with Colossus and with Bucky. I really, really liked the scene where Kitty discovered that Colossus was alive.
And I was impartial to Fantomex, although I did like homage to Diabolik (at least I think that was the inspiration for the character).

He's actually a public domain character, Fantomas, re-worked by Morrison for the series. Diabolik himself was just a reworking of Fantomas.
I thought Colossus had one of the few major comic deaths in recent history was well done. At least he died for something "bigger" than just sacrificing himself to stop the villain of the week ad his big, scary machine. He died saving the rest of the mutants from the Legacy Virus, which is a whole helluva lot more useful than he had been alive.
I think most of Claremont's "foreign characters" always seemed pretty forced and one-note. Some of them were expanded beyond his initial "I still say random words in my home language to show I'm foreign" outline, like Banshee, but most of themm, to me, stayed horrible cliche and shallow...like motherfucking Gambit. Colossus' role as the superstrong Yakov Smirnov of the team ended up even more redundant once the Soviet Bloc fell...I thought making him sign up with Magneto was the only interesting thing they did with him, but even that didn't last. So they give him a noble send-off and all is well. BUT WAIT! Joss Whedon wants you to think he's Chris Claremont! Let's bring back the metal Commie! And do the fastball special! And make Kitty go ga-ga over him like she's 13 again even though she had supposedly grown up over the years and had ended up with much more interesting and less cliche men! Even the purple dragon will show up! WHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!
I don't like that stuff for the same reason I hate the Spider-Man relaunch...lazy writing that hinges on nostalgia as opposed to trying for something that's even remotely new or different, that latter of which Morrison did.

Even the Grant Morrison run fell apart at the end, but Morrison's writing has a tendency to do that as he starts ending one project and putting his energy into planning his next project.

For me, the Legacy Virus was worse than a villain of the week. That storyline went on and on and on, and was one of the reasons I stopped reading X-Men for a long while. I was reading when Peter died so having him die to wrap up a silly storyline was lame for me.

I would just really like for a death to stick, just once and make it a definable act. I know it's "comics" but look, Cap's dead, leave it already. I know its all in the realm of science fiction and fantasy but i'm actually a little tired of building all the hype behind a characters death, then bringing him back with a foil embossed cover in 6-10 months, juts to sell copies. Send a person to another realm or universe or some shit, make it that a death really counts. I heard they were bringing back Blue beetle for shit's sake! I mean if death is so NOT a defineable period, then just have bruce wayne go back in time and save them, or bring them back, so that way the rich fuck can just be the dc male version of paris hilton.
Is anyone else with me, or am I just being the prick my mail man always tells me I am?

Yeah, I hated the last arc of Morrison's run when it first cam out, but re-reading it in trade a year or so later it made a LOT more sense and I enjoyed it much more as the wrap-up to his run. I especially liked that so much of it felt so final, so making that my clean break point is pretty satisfying.

Nah, I'm with ya. Are they really bringing back BB? There's a new version running around, but it's not Ted Kord.
I'm most disapointed with DC when it comes to not sticking to their deaths, manly becase such great characters came out of them. On the surface, killing the Flash (Barry Allen), Green Lantern (Hal Jordan) and Green Arrow were just cheap sales ploys (though arguably ncessary, since all three were in the toilet sales-wise and on the verge of being cancelled), but they ended up creating great, lasting characters to replace them. Thankfully, Allen hasn't REALLY come back fulltime yet, but I was really let down that they bowed to fanboy rantings or even cheaper gimmicks to bring back Lantern and Arrow. The new versions of both are fantastic characters! Let them take over and show some balls!

Well, like I said, I thought pretty much all of the X-stories then were super lame...the Legacy Virus just struck me as the less lamer of them all. It played to strong social metaphorical overtones that made the X-Men unique in the first place. Yes, it basically ends up like curing AIDS with a punch, but I still thought it had more weight than any of the villains that decade, especially given the fate of Colossus' sister earlier, which was one of the few storylines I really was impressed with during that era. I wish that his actions' had been able to create something that could stop the virus from spreading...basically creat a vaccine...but not cure anyone who already had it.

Yeah, I think so. In the last issue of Green Arrow and Black canary, Connor and Black Canary rescue Ollie from Granny Goodness and the Furies (disguised as Athena and Amazons). Granny Goodness vows retaliation, and a shot/beam of light strikes Connor on the escape boat. Last image is Ollie holding Connor, who has a bloodstain over his heart.

Agreed, though I thought the Colossus death salvaged it at least somewhat, even though I think they even mishandled that. Still, it's one of the very few ongoing 90's X-stories that actually had an ending, so I'll give it that much.

I think Wally is a better character simply because the caliber of writing has improved pretty dramatically.
I grew up with Barry Allen as the Flash and will always have that attachment, but being able to start following Wally from his first appearance as the Flash has helped solidify him as my favorite.
I knew they weren't going to keep Wally dead though - I think they never planned for him to be gone forever, but maybe that's wishful thinking. I liked Bart, but they never did enough with him when I was still reading regularly. He was very stagnant as a character, always stuck in that ADD mode and not seeming to learn enough from his experiences.

Almost three years actually.
Plus, they were hinting him at being the next Flash for awhile, even when he was Impulse.
Anyway, my point was that it was clear that Wally was never meant to be gone for good, and they could have brought him back as the Flash without getting rid of Bart. I mean Jay Garrick also is called the Flash, and we have four human Green Lanterns.
So while yes they brought back Wally because Bart's as Flash wasn't selling well, he would have come back at some point regardless.

Hitman was my favorite DC mainline series in the 90's, and I argue their best one, too. Them not printing the whole series in trade so far is beyond dumb, especially since they stopped right as the series really hit its stride with the "Who Dares Wins" storyline. I don't want them to just rerelease the trades...FINISH COLLECTING THE SERIES, DICKS.

I loved loved loved Mark Waid's run on Flash and Impulse. Impulse when he started was a great character and Waid gave him a total child in a teen's body vibe in Flash, but then kicked it into overdrive in Impulse's own series.
And the storyline leading up to Flash #100 - Terminal Velocity - was just great and a big part of it was getting Bart to grow up and be mature enough to take the mantle when Wally was gone.
It's the modern Bart, without the fun, that I don't care for, although a few earlier issues of the current Teen Titans run weren't bad (the issue where Bart reads the library and becomes Kid Flash wasn't bad)

Terminal Velocity was awesome. I think it may have been Mark Waid's best storyline on Flash (although his whole run on Flash is why Wally West is still Flash, and Barry Allen wasn't brought back). And yeah, that's the storyline I was referring to where they said that Bart would be the next Flash.

I got to read the last issue. With this issue, and with what's going on in Astonishing X-Men, Cyclops is definitely the (X-)Man. I had a suspicion about who the baby may be, and I think this issue confirmed this (though not completely sure). Great suprise ending though.

I wouldn't say Cyke was made over during the crossover. It's been part of the process, but not limited to that. If you read Astonishing X-Men, you'll see what I mean. I think he was the same at the beginning of the crossover, as he was at the end. Plus, it wasn't a two dimensional portrayal. The last issue had a nice moment for him that showed his compassionate side.
And given his "recent" history, even the part of him and Apocalypse merging, what five years ago, this change makes sense.

Anyone ever read "Quantum & Woody" back in the mid-1990's? Great humorous superhero series featuring a black hero and his white partner/sidekick. The black hero is whiter than Earl, and is the straight man/object of humor, and the white partner is the jokester.
The series was written by Christopher Priest who later had an absolutely great run on Black Panther. A series that ended before its time, and unfortunately hard to find. Looks like only volume 3 is available on Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/Quantum-Woody-Vol-S-Word-Cancelled/dp/B000Q3RFUO/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1202431732&sr=1-1).

Same here. Last title I actively collected was 52. Once it was done, so was I. I wasn't getting $40/week's worth of enjoyment from comics anymore. Having said that, I think it's a reasonable price for a first time book since that's what the majors charge.
Oh, and I remember paying 12 cents for a comic. And they came with coupons for free rides at Palisades Park.

The sad thing about that is I do it too, so it's hard to relate to the folks who go in every week and buy. I def know the same principals apply, good story, good art, but I just know it's hard to get people in weekly to buy a big name book, let alone a new book they've never heard of. I'll def be whoring it everywhere.

Just saw a rumor on Newsarama (http://forum.newsarama.com/showthread.php?t=146029) that the author of some of my favorite books (The Golden Age and Starman), James Robinson, is returning to comics and will be writing Superman.
I highly recommend both of these books, but especially The Golden Age to anyone. The Golden Age tells an incredibly great story about golden age DC characters (and other character later bought by DC), in particular those members of the JSA, and what happened after WWII.
Great, great story and available in TPB.

Anyone notice that "Wee Hughie" looks a LOT like Simon Pegg?
Really nice art by Darick Robertson that compliments Garth's writing nicely.
What I love about the book is how it beats up on the classic "superhero". It does it so well, in fact, that DC bailed on the book six issues in. Dynamite was smart to pick it back up with very little delay between issues.

That's one of several cool things happening on March 5th. One other cool thing is that a Frank Miller Batman statute is being released. There 's another huge cool thing happening on March 5th too..
As for Dark Tower, the next series does come from Wizard and Glass as it describes what happens when Roland returns after the events in the first series. But since these events aren't detailed as much in the book as the other events, there will be a lot of new stuff.

Anyway, Electro-Supes sucked, but at least Grant Morrison used him to reaffirm his own comic writing godliness by making him badass in the pages of JLA, having him use his new powers to first move the fucking moon and then wrestle with a goddamn angel.
And Spider-Man has had a couple of real dog variant costumes along the way...as much as I love Ben Reilly as the character, this was horrible:
http://hyperion2000.free.fr/Bios/ScarletSpider.JPG
And what about the infamous Spider-Armor?
http://www.samruby.com/Spiderverse/Spiderman/CostumeSpideyArmor.gif
That said, Ben Reilly's Spider-man costume when he briefly took over the role I think kicked ass. I wish it had actually become the regular costume. It was a subtle update that still harkened back enough to the classic original.

The real Spidey is a fucking dumbass for not keeping those stingers and impact webbing dealies that Ben had.

I consider most Marvel characters costumes to be bad throw-away costumes:wink:
Yeah, DC has never dogged it up:

Both companies have been really good at designing classic looks for their mainstay characters over the decades.

Here's my comic question of the day...which characters are the biggest icons? Like, if a kid in some poor country halfway around the world sees it, they know exactly who that is?
My list would go in this order:
Superman
Batman (and classic Robin)
Spider-Man
Captain America
The Hulk
Wolverine
Wonder Woman
Everyone else
In terms of specific ionography, it's much more limited (like only identifying the character by their logo). I think Superman is still by far the tops with the "S," but I'd then pick Captain America's shield second. Batman had a huge bump with the black and yellow bat logo and its hype from the '89 film, but before and after his actual "logo" is far more non-descript. Spider-Man too is pretty non-descript if you focus just on his spider logo. Nobody really notices that thing.

Wait, are we talking about the complete disaster and radar blip of a TV show almost 20 years ago and a few scattered cartoon appearances that catered mostly to comic book fans?
That said, I'd probably slip him in at the end of my list just because of all the times I've heard people around me or on TV or whatever say something is "as fast as/faster than the Flash."

I know, but just from watching non-comics things, I think I see more Flash references in every day life, entertainments, etc., than other superheroes not appearing on your list.
Plus, if you were to ask your average person to name a superhero who has super-speed, I bet they say the Flash (tho' they may say Superman first).

I think Superman's S shield is by far the most recognizable icon there is and way out front of all others. I think 2nd place came be a tie between Batman and Spiderman with maybe a slight lead given to Spidey due to his movie success.
Besides Spidey and Captain America what Marvel character has a great icon that automatically identifies them?

I have to say, Ryan Reynolds is a pretty good choice for Deadpool. His horrible wise-cracking is extremely similar to Wade's and Reynolds has built a solid physique over the last few years.
As long as he doesn't over-act too much (compensating for the mask), we should be OK.
Of course they could have gone with Tom Cruise...

You know i read somewhere where the ghostbusters logo was one of the worlds most recognizable logos
I think the difference is, is that Marvel doesnt feel the need to market some kind of icon for their people. People know who the X men are but they dont really have a recognizable logo, or the avengers or on and on
Marvel lets its characters just speak for themselves without the need for logoizing(TM KO) its stars

But it sounds like you're talking actual icons/logos of the characters, like Superman's "S." Spider-Man's spider is pretty non-descript and not eye-catching at all. Like, if you showed someone that logo all by itself just on a piece of paper, I'd bet more people say that it's just a spider.

He's certainly a better actor than Tyler Mane, although I'm not sure about his physical presence.
Schreiber is in respectable shape, but doesn't seem to be tremendously "imposing."

I think for the most part you are right in Marvels philosophy, I dont agree but I agree that's maybe what Marvels wants to do.
And might certainly work with comic book readers and such
But I took the question in that some one from outside that world would be able to recognize a Icon of a superhero and I dont think that someone in China would be able to tell who Cyclops or Kitty Pryde.

Just finished the "Coward" arc of Ed Brubaker's Criminal. This is a great arc, and has a great noir feel, about a pickpocket/thief who is known for his ability to stay unnoticed and to survive.
Brubaker's been on a great run for the last 3 years or so, with Criminal, Captain America, Daredevil and Iron Fist. His Uncanny X-men has been okay, but he's knocking them out of the park with these other books.

Batman had a heart attack at the end of Batman #672 while trying to take on a faux Batman attacking a Gotham police station.
Batman 673 shows him remembering some of his early exploits that were originally in comics from the 50's and 60's, I believe.

I agree - there was top-notch voice talent. Really well done.
And to defend Superman, they were going for a 1950's Supes not the 'modern' version. It was the era of "truth, justice, and the American way!" I thought they did a great job bringing that across.

Looks like James Robinson will be on an another book for DC. Specifically, Justice League (http://forum.newsarama.com/showthread.php?t=150409).
This isn't Justice League of America or JLA, though. The premise sounds like one of those more proactive books we've been talking about. Its feature Hal Jordan, Ollie, Supergirl, Batwoman, Ray Palmer, Freddy Freeman (the former Captain Marvel Jr), the blue Starman, and Congorilla, who I have never heard of. But Robinson's claims he'll do for Congorilla what he did for Shade in the Starman book.
Tell you what. If it wasn't for James Robinson, I would say this book doesn't really sound that great.
But I probably said the same thing about Starman when I heard about it.

It sounds like the Exterme Justice book done mid-90's led by Captain Atom. That was a whole pro-active take on the JL. Plus the whole relaunch of the Outsiders no to long ago was the same concept as well
Has it really worked?
Im sure I will give it a shot but.........

Exactly my thought, but it's James Robinson, and his love of the Silver Age and writing skills makes things better.

I visited their office, and they have the Batman Begins suit in the lobby, and are also right by MAD magazine offices.

I recently got a subscription to Mad for my 12 year old son, expecting that he'd like it as much as I did when I was a kid. He read one, "Eh, it's not funny" and that was it. Won't even look at them as they come in.
I've checked out a few and I have to agree (granted I don't think it's geared towards 48 year olds). No Dave Berg, Don Martin. Movie parodies that aren't witty or funny. I don't think the color adds anything.
Sad.

The feds are on to you all.
In 1954, a subcommittee of the Senate Judiciary Committee charged with investigating the causes of juvenile delinquency took on an imminent danger within: the comic-book industry. (http://www.newyorker.com/arts/critics/books/2008/03/31/080331crbo_books_menand)
Has anyone ever heard of artist Jeff Henderson?
Here's his online portfolio. (http://www.famousframes.com/website/portfolio.php?user_id=67)
My roommate met him at the Wizard World convention in L.A. recently and apparently they're dating.
She mentioned that he worked on the story boards for 30 Days of Night, and mentioned the books he's promoting now that I missed, but I want to do a little research.
Found a link to an interview he and the director did about the subject (http://www.steveniles.com/news/2006/09/28/david-slade-jeff-henderson-talk-30-days-of-night-story-boards)

Even tho i'm only indirectly familiar with many of the 1950's references (Dragnet TV show etc..), i still find the legendary initial Kurtzman issues (MAD ~#1-24?) as good as ANYTHING ever in comic book form;
IIRC, there was an interesting article in the Comics Journal (maybe their "Top 100 comics of all time" issue?---BTW; a recommended read) that suggested that after MAD's "Superduperman", superhero comics had reached their logical conclusion.
Hey, at the least, WallyWood's Lois Lane is still one of the hottest ever girls-in-comix.
PS- add me to the list of "Superman Red son/Sun(?)" resisters who will probably have to finally check it out after all the recommendations posted here.

OK - I started reading Transmetropolitan from the beginning. It has been a long time since I read any of the issues and never got to read the whole series, so I just decided to start.
The question is this: How in the hell did Garth Ennis come up with this idea and make such an intriguing, ongoing story out of it?
For those who didn't follow the series, it is about Spider Jerusalem who is a psychotic, brilliant, journalist & anti-hero in a dystopic "near future." It is delightfully absurd, but completely fits. Everything just "works" on a level you will rarely find in literature of any type.
Ennis can be a bit harsh with his language at times (for my taste), but damnit that man can tell a story.

He didn't. Warren Ellis did. As for how, I imagine Hunter S. Thompson was the jumping off point

*Possible spoilers*
What I've read online is along the lines that in the 1st issue the heroes come across a crashed space ship. They open it to find that a bunch of characters in stasis, dressed in the costume designs of the 70's. The implication is that they've been captured and replaced for many years.

Well, one of the reasons might be his stealing of Howard the Duck's parody villains. And Howard's genuine humor and replacing it with anti-humor.
Goddamn Deadpool. I just invariably hate all of the "Weapon *Blank*" characters. Except for Fantomex. Fantomex rules all of our faces. Marvel should kill off all of the X-characters and give their titles to Fantomex...and then give him 8 more, because even that wouldn't be enough for his awesomeness.
