So I guess my dad is/was a mason, and he's been keeping it a secret for years. He will not talk about it other than to say that he does not want to be buried as a mason and he doesn't want anybody to know he is one. We're not close, but he's getting old, and I have no idea what he means. Is it just something on your tombstone? Something you have to wear to your grave? Some rites? Turn you into a vampire?

It's not all a secret. (http://www.nymasons.org/cms/whatisamason)
Hot tub gets it.
It's no biggie- there is nothing done to the body.
It doesn't replace a normal service; its in addition to it - the same way if someone had a military funeral they give a 21 gun salute.

My uncle's father, who not even his son knew, had died and apparently he was a grand wizard or something and when they had the wake, he was laid out in a purple robe and gloves an a weird pointed hat and it freaked out the whole family.

My grandfather was a mason, and they had a masonic service for him.
Basically, it was them wearing white gloves with their masonic hats, and they put different things in the casket and talked about what each of them symbolized and so on and so forth...it was really no biggie

For Masons, the robe is perry-winkle.

seriously, did the legendary mason 'grand wizards' lead to the idea of magic wizards (like esd beleives in) in our culture?
or is a magical wizard derived from somewhere else?

Actually, the wizard as we know it today can be seen in various shapes and forms in many cultures throughout the history of mankind.
Cave drawings found in the Himalayan mountains seem to show that early man tended to believe in the "magical" powers of his elders,
usually a dominant male member of a tribe or family.
This practice can also be witnessed in the Kaharzahri tribes of central
and western Africa , around the turn of the century.
In the Brazilian rain forests, scientists have discovered that
