i accidentally found out my girl is getting me a new guitar for christmas...so since it was out in the open she asked if i would rather have a washburn...martin...or fender...i think around 400 dollar range. i have a washburn now but dont really know much about which brands are better. i just enjoy to play. anyone have any suggestions?

I was never really a fan of any fender under like 800. They all seem cheap and shitty. I would prob go with the Martin, esp if you already have a washburn.

brand or price doesnt matter.
all that matters is how it feels and how it sounds.

remember: higher $ doesnt always mean its a better guitar.

The Martin isn't necessarily better than the Washburn or Fender...I think Martin makes their low end guitars in China or Malaysia now...

But I will say that the Martin retains its value the best...If you think like I do.

Washburn is a nice acoustic guitar. Martin is also. For $400 you can get a hell of a good guitar.

I recently got an Epiphone Les Paul Standard. Yes, its an Epiphone, but it is still a GIBSON. It has the feel of a Les Paul and the sound of a Les Paul.

There are great reviews for this at Musicians Friend (http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Epiphone-Les-Paul-Standard-Plain-Top?sku=517413) and I really love mine.

Of course, it's a present, so you probably don't have the option, but I'd go used if I could. Check out www.gbase.com and see what you can get in an older guitar. Pretty much everything in the $400 price range is made overseas these days and there is a lot of variation from guitar to guitar- even in the same brand and model. That's why it pays to shop locally where you can try out a number of the same brand and model, and pick the one with the best construction detail and sound.

Listen to stinkbud. My Epiphone SG sounds better than its Gibson sibling, and costs about a thousand dollars less.

Their acoustic guitars are awesome as well.

The EJ-200 (http://epiphone.com/default.asp?ProductID=77&CollectionID=9)feels and sounds great, and is under 400 bucks.

http://www.eastwoodguitars.com/ check out eastwood guitars. They make some nice guitars that are at a reasonable price. The guitars are mostly copies of retro guitars from the 60's and 70's. They sound amazing though, I have the Univox Hi Flier and the Eastwood GP, love both of them great guitars.

The Squire Jagmaster is also another amazing guitar that i own. Do not let the Squire name fool you. This guitar kicks major ass. Great deal too, I got mine for 250

For Christmas you can get your chick an amp and a nice stand to display your new piece of machinery. She'll love it.

wow. im honored anyone would think of me. thanks budday.

my advice depends on the answer to this question. what kinda music do you like to play?

in my own experiance... i like to play many different styles. so i own 5 or 6 different guitars to accentuate each. but my alltime favorite is my epiphone (thats right, i said it. EPIPHONE) les paul. its more comfortable and playable than any of my guitars. and it sounds good playing any style of music. rock, reggae, metal, jazz, classical, hell it even sounded good when i lent some solos to a friends hip hop record. and best of all...it falls in your aformentioned price range. so that would be my suggestion cuz an epiphone (thats right epiphone) les paul covers every single base.

I agree that the Seagull is a great guitar but it is made in Canada.....BOO!!!!

Do yourself a favor and get a spruce-top Dreadnought from Martin and you will be thrilled how good $400 can sound.
