Perhaps only the fantasy duo of King Kong and Bambi could be a more bizarre pairing than Robert Plant and Alison Krauss. Yet on Raising Sand, their haunting and brilliant collaboration, the Led Zeppelin screamer and Nashville's most hypnotic song whisperer seem made for each other.
I don't think this is anything terribly surprising. Anyone familiar with Led Zeppelins catalog knows they were always eclectic and went in all sorts of directions from Blues to heavy metal to acoustic to folk-rock music. Plant went further as a solo adding Indian and North African influences to his music. But this is the first time he's gone Country, and I'm no fan of country music but they sound good together. Krauss apparently does a slow Texas country sound thats reminiscent of Norah Jones (who grew up in Texas). Takes a little while to get used to, but worth checking out.

Allison Krauss is a bluegrass artist, so this is a something of a departure for her as well. They're covering some great songwriters. I'll probably pick it up, thanks for the recommendation.

Robert Plant looks like flatulence embodied.
Led Zeppelin was based in the blues. Country is the white man's blues. Doesn't seem surprising at all.
Personally I would be intrigued to see how Plant sounds with Allison Krause, who has a beautiful voice.

I hope he goes into the country and never comes back.
Go look for the stupid Shire and leave us alone, assbutt.

If I didn't know better I'd think Plant and Led Zep did something to you personally...your hatred is overwhelming.

Good.
But I got in my shot...I don't wanna turn this thread into a bashfest. I'm off!

I was really hesitant to check this out, but I finally broke down and bought it.
It's surprisingly good. Country is probably not an accurate description; it actually sound smore like a Daniel Lanois production than what we're used to from T-Bone Burnette. Krauss and Plant's harmonies are sort of similar to Gram and Emmylou...which is probably the biggest surprise of the collaboration.

Allison Krauss has been a round for a long time and she has a great voice.
As Don said she's more bluegrass than say pure country but she at times does find a good mix.
She's one of the few female country artists that I actually like. I own about 80% of her albums.
She did some great covers of Keith Whitley ( country singer who died a while back at an early age ) songs back in the mid-90s.
I had seen a vid they were running on CMT w/ these 2 and figured it was just a one song thing.
Didn't realize that it was an entire album until my brother mentioned something and then I saw it posted here.
I haven't heard the song start to finish but it had a decent sound.
I love this remake. That's one of the things I always liked about Plant and Zeppelin -- when they'd thrown in old Elvis, Fats Domino and Ricky Nelson songs into their shows in tribute to their influences. The Everly Brothers always kicked ass and "Gone Gone Gone" is such and underrated and forgotten song of theirs. I'm glad to see Plant and Krauss do an excellent cover of this song and bring it and The Everly Brothers back in vogue.
Here's the Plant/Krauss version:

Here's the Everlys' original studio version. I have no idea what the pictures are:

If that music video ran more than 100k I'd be shocked.

Reminds me a little of Led Zeppelin III....In my opinion the best Zeppelin album after Physical Graffitti.
By the way, Robert Plant should give his hair back to Mikey D....it's cold out.

Several of the songs on Physical Grafitti came from the Zeppelin III sessions.

No shit? Well that explains my affinity for both albums.
