View Full Version : What is your 'luxury' item?

As you've reached certain economic plateaus in your life what are the 'luxury' items that you couldn't wait to get but now seem so normal to you that it's hard to believe that you ever 'wanted' for such a thing?
I have a couple that come to mind:
1) in my first job out of college I couldn't wait until I could send my clothes to the cleaners and stop ironing all Sunday afternoon to get ready for the week. It seemed such like such a luxury at the time an now it's not even a thought to do so
2) The second item is a fully automatic car (transmission, power windows, power steering, etc.). The day that I bought my first car with all of those options (a 1989 honda accord) after 10 years of manual transmission, roll-up windows, no a/c, I thought that was the pinnacle

My wife and I were the same with our vehicles. When we bought her 1996 Honda Accord special addition brand new off the lot we were both on top of the world. It was the first new vehicle either of us had ever had; we had to have her folks co-sign with us. She was devestated when she plowed that lil paid off beauty into the ass end of an SUV totaling it but seemed to perk up a little with the purchase of her Benz. It'll be paid for in 30 days...I can't wait to see what she does to it.
We both have "luxury" watches as well. Hers a Rolex, mine a Breitling. They're nice but not too flashy, both stainless, no diamonds or anything but a good reminder when checking the time that things could be a lot worse. That being said I have a good ol fashioned Timex ironman on my Xmas list.

It seems kind of ridiculous now, but buying my first laptop was a major step. I was using one at work and had a desktop (of course), but buying a personal laptop was a big deal at the time.
I think my other big luxury is XM. I had been satisfied with terrestrial radio, but decided to check out an online trial of XM. I can't imagine being without my satellite radio now. I listen all day while working and it helps make my day pass more quickly.

Six thousand dollar mountain bikes. The economic position hasn't change; I've just become more used to it and the shock and embarassment of such things has lessened. Not enough to make me think I have a bargain or anything, but I ride for fitness, so compared to a gym, it's a bit of a bargain over a few years of service.
PS- I just put a one thousand dollar fork on the front of it. Oof.

My brand new Tama drum set. I knew I had arrived when I was play that motherfucker.
I had been beating a used set of red Tama's for a few years. Got it used, the one bass drum didn't match the other one and the toms. Same color, different drum line of theirs. Sounded like dog shit when you recorded with them.
My new set is beautiful and sounds great in the studio.

A Hallicrafters SX-101a This will probably be my winter restoration project.
The pic is of someone elses radio. Mine's in pretty rough shape but not a basket case.
When restored and aligned, this will perform as well if not better than the best radios made today. That's how I discovered Ron and Fezzie. Fixing a radio one evening years ago, I heard Fezzies voice and was hooked.

I don't even own an iron. I had one that an old roommate left behind years ago then I lost it in the divorce. I never used it anyway.
I consider my Elantra my first "grown up" car. I have automatic, power windows and locks, power steering, A/C. I don't know how I survived without A/C in the car. Oh-- and a CUP HOLDER!
I think right now my luxury items are my cable modem and the high-end cable TV package. When I look around I pretty much have everything I need. I don't need a fancy car, a big screen TV, etc. I do like to splurge on CDs and DVDs, though.

What an excellent topic!
I started thinking about what 'luxuries' I've treated myself to.
I honestly don't know. Not cause I don't have nice things, but because I've never looked at anything as a luxury. I've always 'afforded' things, Ive spent the past five years living to/beyond my means and had it catch up to me. I've managed to get out of the hole in the past 10 months but even though my wife and I have had struggles we've never looked at anything as a luxury, I've just always had 'stuff'.
I guess if there is one thing that I can/will consider a luxury will be a new house my wife and I put an offer on last week. If we can pull off the deal, that may be my first luxury item that says "I've made it".

Our Timeshare in Orlando.
The condos are surrounded by the golf course...and our place is 50 feet from the Pro Shop and first tee.
3 master bedrooms with their own baths, 5 bathrooms altogether and 52" HDTVs in each bedroom and each living room. Built in WiFi and wired high speed internet access...
All we do is come with luggage. We can even have our groceries delivered.
Odd as it sounds, my luxury item is my beloved 1993 Jeep Wrangler.

Mine's an 02. We so rock.
Silera, I've been wanting one for 20 years but always talked myself out of it because it's too impractical. I have a car and a company truck, but this past summer I said 'fuck it' and bought my Jeep.
I was worried it wouldn't be as fun as I'd imagined all these years, and I was right.
It's even MORE fun.

Nice Cigars other than my normal everyday smokes and being able to take my lil family on vacation every year is awesome. My wife and I were married for nearly 10yrs before we took an actual "vacation" and not the long weekend to see a show and stay in some crappy hotel. But at that time we could spend the money on a descent hotel or buy more dope to take with us, the choice was easy ya know.
