A sports memorabilia auction house brings us a curio from the 1898 season: a memo to players from the leadership of the National League (at the time, the only major baseball league) warning them to avoid the use of profane language. And what was considered "profane language" in 1898? Phrases like "Buzz off, buddy" or "In a pig's eye!" Nope, pretty much what it is now.
The memo gives examples of things players had yelled at fans or umpires, including:
"You cocksucking son of a bitch!"
"Go fuck yourself!"
"A dog must have fucked your mother when she made you!"
"I'll make you suck my ass!"
