Whats the best song about drugs?

I say 'Heroin' by VU Its really seductive and then just completely falls apart. It kindof makes me want to do heroin.

Bonus Question: Best song about 'straight edge?'

Straight Ahead by Straight Ahead

I really did search for this topic before someone posts the link to the thread that asks the same exact question.

Lucy in the Sky......was that a Beatles or just Paul McCartney deal?

I have two questions for you:

(1) How old are you?
(2) How can you be that clueless?

Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds was a John Lennon-penned Beatles tune, allegedly inspired by a drawing his son Julian had made of his school friend, Lucy. Julian called this picture "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds." (Aww, the cute little tyke!)

It appeared on 1967's Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band

Because the Beatles, like many folks in rock music, were experimentative with substances such as LSD, heroin, cocaine, marijuana, etc., the lyrics are so dreamlike and the sound is so distorted and trippy, countless generations of fans (and foes) have interpreted this song to be about having a (good) acid trip.

John had a way of putting words together that I find fascinating. . .I stumbled across the lyrics for I Am the Walrus when I was 15 and fell in love with the craziness, even before I'd ever heard the song!

I've explained to my friends that I feel John balanced the sappy-sweet, silly, frothy and "twee" lyrical tendencies that Paul has and pushed songs in new, often weird, directions.

As much as I like Paul, I can definitively say that he'd never write something like Lucy.

And, to get us back on topic, my favorite song about drugs is usually Cocaine by Eric Clapton.

1. I'm the ripe young age of 24.

I LOVE songs about drugs, and I've never been an addict. I have had addictions though, so to me a great drug song is vague.

Even in the K's Choice, where she sings about being high and says:

The deeper you stick it in your vein
The deeper the thoughts, there's no more pain
I'm in heaven, I'm a god
I'm everywhere, I feel so hot

I can relate that to that in SO many different ways. Though I'd have to take "the deeper you stick it in your vein" as a metaphor.

And in Lou Reed's Heroin:

When I put a spike into my vein
And I'll tell ya, things aren't quite the same
When I'm rushing on my run
And I feel just like Jesus' son
And I guess that I just don't know

Again, if "spike into my vein" is a metaphor, the next line's perfectly sum up the high you get off feeding an addiction to a woman, gambling, depression, etc.

I dunno.. just an observation, wondering if other people felt this way.

Roll Another Number (For The Road)
Neil Young

It's too dark
to put the keys
in my ignition,
And the mornin' sun is yet
to climb my hood ornament.

But before too long I might
see those flashing red lights
Look out, mama,
'cause I'm comin' home tonight.

Think I'll
roll another number
for the road,
I feel able to get under any load.
Though my feet
aren't on the ground,
I been standin' on the sound
Of some open-hearted people
goin' down.

I'm not goin' back
to Woodstock for a while,
Though I long to hear
that lonesome hippie smile.

I'm a million miles away
from that helicopter day
No, I don't believe
I'll be goin' back that way.

Think I'll
roll another number
for the road,
I feel able to get under any load.
Though my feet
aren't on the ground,
I been standin' on the sound
Of some open-hearted people
goin' down.

Down to Seeds and Stems Again
Commander Cody and His Lost Planet Airmen

I'm sittin alone, Saturday night, watching the Late Late Show.
A bottle of wine, some cigarettes, I got no place to go.
Well, I saw your other man today; he was wearing my brand new shoes,
And I'm down to seeds and stems again, too.

Well, I met my old friend Bob today from up in Bowling Green;
He had the prettiest little gal that I'd ever seen.
But I couldn't hide my tears at all, cause she looked just like you,
And I'm down to seeds and stems again, too.

Now everybody tells me there's other ways to get high.
They don't seem to understand I'm too far gone to try.
Now these lonely memories, they're all I can't lose,
And I'm down to seeds and stems again, too.

Well my dog died just yesterday and left me all alone.
The finance company dropped by today and repossessed my home.
That's just a drop in the bucket compared to losing you,
And I'm down to seeds and stems again, too.

Got those down to seeds an stems again blues.

Think I'm In Love
Spiritualized

Sun so bright that I'm nearly blind
Cool cos I'm wired and I'm out of my mind
Warms the dope running down my spine
But I don't care 'bout you and I've got nothing to do
Free as the warmth in the air that I breathe
Even freer than DMT
Feel the warmth of the sun in me
But I don't care 'bout you and I've got nothing to do
Love in the middle of the afternoon
Just me, my spike in my arm and my spoon
Feel the warmth of the sun in the room
But I don't care 'bout you
And I've got nothin'

I think I'm in love
Probably just hungry
I think I'm your friend
Probably just lonely
I think you got me in a spin now
Probably just turning
I think I'm a fool for you babe
Probably just yearning
I think I can rock and rool
Probably just twisting
I think I wanna tell the world
Probably ain't listening
Come on

I think I can fly
Probably just falling
I think I'm the life and soul
Probably just snorting
I think I can hit the mark
Probably just aiming
I think my name is on your lips
Probably complaining
I think I have caught it bad
Probably contagious
I think I'm a winner baby
Probably Las vegas
Come on

I think I'm alive
Probably just breathing
I think you stole my heart now baby
Probably just thieving
I think I'm on fire
Probably just smoking
I think that you're my dream girl
Probably just dreaming
I think I'm the best babe
Probably like all the rest
I think that I could be your man
Probably just think you can
Come on

I think I'm in love

I'll go with "Eight Miles High", but not the Byrds' original, but Husker Du's cover instead. It takes the drug experience of the original, which suggests something like pot or maybe acid, and transposes it into a screaming, frantic amphetamine rush -- by the end, Bob Mould isn't even trying to sing the lines and is just howling, and the music is rushing out of control. It's stunning.

I mean, why do you think this band named their first EP "Land Speed Record"?

I'll go with "Eight Miles High", but not the Byrds' original, but Husker Du's cover instead. It takes the drug experience of the original, which suggests something like pot or maybe acid, and transposes it into a screaming, frantic amphetamine rush -- by the end, Bob Mould isn't even trying to sing the lines and is just howling, and the music is rushing out of control. It's stunning.

I mean, why do you think this band named their first EP "Land Speed Record"?

great song and even better cover, but i've heard mcgwyn say that the son's more about air travel than drugs

and for a straight edge song, how about in my eyes:

B-b-but I thought "Eight Miles High" was about an airplane ride! David Crosby said he wrote it when they flew to England for the first time!

Not a song but a lyric or monologue by Todd Snider from a live recording of a song called "Tension" and I actually thought about this line the other day while listening to the show.

"Well they roped off almost all of my problems and pointed their fingers at drug addiction cause they know if you're the one doing the pointing nobody's probably looking at you...but you know this war on drugs is funded by tobacco and alcohol commissions; it's not what drugs you're strung out on they care about so much as whose. But you know people still dig drugs..I mena y'all do anyway...I'm over it."

Somebody got up on Matty's side of the bed today ...

A little harsh dontcha think?

I thought I'd edited that out before I posted it . . . and then I stopped caring.

It was the second time I'd read someone confusing John with Paul in seven seconds and it made me nuts. How anybody could confuse goofy, twee, vegetarian Paul with drugged-out, experimental, wiseass John made me wonder. . . add that to a generally rotten mood and a need to sharpen my claws and . . . well, yeah, it was harsh.

Sorry kids. I've been getting meaner and meaner lately.
