My wife's iPod finally died after four long months of quality service. The peripherals by Belkin didn't last three months.

My little brother's 30 gig crashed one year into it and Apple told him the same thing: sorry pal. Sure you saved up from months of delivering newspapers but now you get nothing from us.
I hate them.
But not enough to try a zune ....

Some people are really good at breaking those things. I had my first one for 3 years before it died.

I had a 40gb, the hard drive was defective and goes corrupt after 2 days and I kept sending it back and they just reformatted it and sent it back. Every time, 2 days later it was corrupt, starts ticking, locks up until the battery dies. sent it back three more times telling them not to just reformat it(something I could easily do myself) but they kept ignoring my request, reformatted it, and over this time the warranty ran out and I will never by a non-flash based player again.

Mine is 2 yrs old and a twenty gig. It constantly crashes and has a sad ipod face on it. I swear, the only way to fix it is to smack the side it hard against a carpeted surface.

Mine have all lasted years. My last one had a hard drive click death. Usually, if it's still under warranty and you take it to a store, they may just replace the whole iPod.
My iPod touch was having probs two weeks ago. I brought it to the store and they gave me a brand spankin' new one to replace it.

Does that mean you have an extra polish cloth? I can't find mine.

No, it's just the iPod, no accessories. I did pick up a hard plastic case for the iPod and a screen protector, so I never need to wipe it down. I'll occasionally just wipe it down with a wet towel to get the grease off it.

here's the kick in the taint...
on me right now is my bro's OG one... bought it the first week they were out.
has only replaced the battery once...
here, i have a 4g click wheel, and 2 have suffered hd failures, and this one has as well, even though diagnostics say hdd passed.
actually, i think its the battery that is causing all the probs.
seems that when the battery runs low, the drive wont engage.
normally, when this happens, its a grinding sound and the sound of the drive starting and stopping...
this sound is great.. its a very fast 6 clicks in a row... over .. and over..
sad face icon, then the FUCK YOU from apple, then the non-animated charging sign.
i have no interest in breaking this thing open and replacing the battery.
flash mem only for me from now on.

Basically the same as mine, when the battery gets low something happens to the hard drive, it gets corrupted, I get the apple/support link with a folder/exclamation point icon the HD just speeds up and slows down, ipod is frozen until the battery runs out. After that I have to fully recharge, reformat the drive, transfer my music and then I can use it untl the battery gets too low. I can't tell if it's a bad battery or HD.

Yes! There is no way I could go back to carrying around a HDD in my pocket. Had battery problems with earlier disk-based iPods. No problem with Nano. Moving parts suck (battery life).

Apple treats ipods like they are disposable lighters :furious:
2-300 bucks and if you get a year out of them your lucky:wallbash:
I am not a big fan
Even if they dont die I have had to refresh ie lose all songs and reinstall everything at least 3-4 times. They own the market but I hate the thing.

I've had my 3G ipod for years now with no problem other than that it turns itself off once in a while. My ipod video has had zero problems at all since day one and my ipod shuffle has worked perfectly too.
I <3 iPods!

Whenever my Zune finally croaks, I'm not sure if I'll go back to the iPod or not. I've heard good things about the Creative Zen players.

I've never had an iPod, with the exception of the broken ones that were left over when My Lady bought a new, but, for the most part I've just used the Inno for quite a while. I never need to listen to hundreds of thousands of songs when I step out the door. I usually load up about 7 albums worth of music everytime I have new things that's peeking My interest.....Plus, The Ron & Fez Shows I record on it.

My wife was having trouble with her ipod and itunes crashing her pc all the time. I bought her a SanDisk SDMX4-2048-A70 Sansa e250 2 GB MP3 Player with microSD Expansion Slot (http://www.amazon.com/SanDisk-SDMX4-2048-A70-Player-microSD-Expansion/dp/B000ETXOC8/ref=pd_ys_iyr1) this year and she loves it.

my wife's ipod is three years old. and while it's not broken, it's been beaten to shit. she works outside and the things just been smashed and drenched to the point that the click wheel doesn't work so well. So i let he have my 1 year old nano.
Seriously, i don't understand how you people wreck your ipods!

mines about to die, but then again it's 1st generation and has been dropped, hit and gotten damp (from the rain) more times than i can recall. it still works, but the battery usually only lasts 5 hrs and you can't shut it off. not to mention that u have to charge it every night.

opening an ipod is very simple.
its pretty much pops open.
changing a battery should take no more than 10 minutes.
so theres no excuse for not getting a new battery.
there are websites devoted to fixing ipods.
most things are fairly easy fixes, but like most things people aren't really interested in fixing the problem..just kind of bitching about it.
i've had my ipod for almost four years, besides the firewire not working any longer it still works great.

What? You don't want to wirelessly share your MP3 files with the other 8 Americans who bought the Zune?

no point? this is my 3rd failed ipod. as far as i am concerned, they do not deserve the chance at a new battery. this ipod will probably end up in a 55 gal drum along with wood, oxygen, and a heat source.

Unless you walk a lot or take public transportation or work somewhere that allows you to listen to one, you don't need one. I have an 80 gig one that works fine, but I only got it after I moved to Chicago without my car. I now walk ad take the train the train everywhere, so it's invaluable, but until I made that change it would have been useless since music-wise I would either be playing CD's in my car or be at home where I could play them. That said, having an iPod in no way negates the desire or need to buy albums if you want them...I have thousands of them and still buy too many even with the iPod. And if you take care of it, odds are it will last you for a while. I think some of the people here were probably a little careless or rough with theirs.

I've had two iPods. I will one day go for an iPod Classic because I can't put my collection as a whole on my Nano Video. It works great, and I take very good care of it. The screen is perfect, I have a plastic protector for it. The chrome back with my phone # and name is in very good shape, because I rarely take it out of its case except to play on the Logitech iPod speaker base we share at work. I bought it in September when it first came out, and I put my old iPod on Ebay in August-it was an iPod Micro and it was 3 years old. It worked very good, and the person I sold it to emailed me to say she is still enjoying it.
But if you aren't as anal about the care and feeding of your iPod as I am, I would recommend buying one from the Apple store or from the iPod Website (http://www.apple.com/itunes/) and when you do that, you can get the laser engraving, and have the opportunity to buy the extended replacement warranty.

FYI - I fixed my ipod after it's been broken for the last 2 years. I finally found enough people who had the exact same problem as me. It sounded crazy knowing how delicate these mini hard drives are but, as directed, I smacked it pretty hard on the right side and now it works.

It turns out I was right, there was something wrong with the hard drive, the arm was stuck. I now wonder how much longer it will work for, these typa fixes usually only delay the inevitable.
It pisses me off because I bought the 2 year extended warranty for 125$ from best buy and I sent it back 3 times only to have them reformat the drive and send it back to me. I told them repeatedly I had done that myself and the problem will reappear. Now I know for a fact the HD was faulty. They said the HD was corrupt... and it was because the arm wasn't working properly. They should have replaced the HD but they purposely delayed knowing they could send it back working temporarily and run out the clock on my warranty.

I've owned 2 iPods and never had a problem. Well outside of the fact that the first one was stolen...
But I use mine everyday at the gym for roughly 2 hours and whenever I travel so it gets a lot of use. I have one of the shuffles....
