Depends on the zombie. For slow zombies, a shotgun will work quite nicely. For fast zombies you'll want a sniper rifle.

Wrong. You'll need to be far away from fast zombies. To use a shotgun on the fast ones, you'll need to be close. They might overwhelm you.

Get a Marlin 22 semi auto rifle. They are relatively cheap and nicely made and accurate.
Youll need to get a scope and adjust its accuracy which is a little tricky and youll need to shoot it while the gun is securely held in place and keep adjusting the windage and elevation until the cross hairs line up with the bullet hole in your target, but after that, itll be fine. Just be careful! Rifle bullets travel over a mile! Dont shoot at water, because the bullet will "skip" and possibly hit someone far away.

Marlin makes a nice .22 cal bolt action. I cant remember the model number, but we use it at work to put down small animals. It has a polymer stock, and stainless barrel, and receiver which makes it pretty corrosion proof. I think it has a 5 round magazine.

there are 6 different rounds on that site i was looking at with drastic weight differences
it seems like a good gun just because you can get heavier rounds as you progress and feel more comfie with the gun
but i just cant tell if any 30-06 gun can shoot any 30-06 round
and i may be moving to reno at the end of the year and would need to buy myself a new toy to justify it

Wait till you move to buy a gun; less headache, cheaper and more diverse selection available in Nevada. If it is your first gun (if so, please take at least one safety course), a .22 is a great place to start. The guns are cheap and so is the ammo. A 30-06 has a lot of powder behind it (As does the new and improved, flatter-trajectoried 30-06, the .270 Win) and may not be the most fun gun to shoot at the range.
But if you really want a long-distance beast, the 30-06, .270, and even a .308 would be a good choice. Savage makes pretty decent and affordable bolt-actions, most with an Accu-trigger which is adjustable but comes out the box at something like 2.5 pounds pull. My wife has a Savage 111 in .270 Win with the accu-trigger and it breaks nice. It's not as nice shooting as say a Winchester Model 70, but it is a good rifle for the money.
As far as I know, a rifle chambered in 30-06 will shoot any 30-06 round, but the manual that comes with the rifle will tell you exactly what ammo you can and can't use.

I travel in my RV from time to time and there are a few border towns in Texas that have a problems with "travel home invasions." The snowbirds down there tend to have a lot of cash on them and make easy marks. I went to a gun shop and talked to the owner about getting a pistol for this reason. He recommended that I get a 12ga shotgun and use the shortest barrel legally possible (which I believe is 18") and use buckshot or something similar. The main people that commit these crimes are trashy white people and non-english speaking legal immigrants. The owner said that the beauty of a pump action shotgun is that 9 times out of 10 you will never need to use it. He described that racking a shotgun when an intruder is in your house is universal language for "get the FUCK out."

A 22 is a childs gun. It's great if your poaching deer at night cause it has little or no sound, but the thing is not great at long distances(200 plus yards). A 270 or 243 is a descent gun cause it's a flat shooting gun. You can usually take 500 to 600 yard shots with descent accuracy. A 30-06 is a powerful gun just horrible at long shots. You have to aim pretty high up on the target cause the round is gonna drop almost a foot at 600 yards. A 7mm mag is a great gun cause it has alot of power and shoots relatively flat. I use this and have been pretty accurate at 800 plus yards. It kicks like a bastard but worth it.

A .22 LR is probably used more in "adult" jobs than other chamberings. You can't really compare a .22 to a .270 as they are entirely different things, like comparing a paring knife to a meat cleaver. A .22 is a very "descent" gun.

Other than zombie poaching, why are you looking for one? The answer depends on the purpose. Self defense for home - I wouldn't go with a .22 - I would go with the shotgun.
Target shooting or plinking - .22 is fine. Be advised that there is a world of difference between a .22 and a 30-06. Give us a little more detail, and you'll get a better answer. Either way, take a gun safety course. The gun shop can probably refer you to one.

I bought a Model 70 .223 WSSM last year because it was half price and they don't make Model 70's anymore. It is a pretty silly round, but I guess people like 'em for prairie dogs and such. I only do target shooting, and the round is too expensive to be too much fun.

I do agree that it is used alot but it still doesn't mean it's not a childs gun. It is great for small game or deer. The only problem is you have to shoot the deer in the head for them to go down. A vital shot to the heart or lungs won't stop a deer. That is why I said it's a childs gun. In most cases in rural areas when a child grows out of the pellet gun phase the first gun he owns is a 22. It helps them to learn to fire a rifle and teaches them the importance of firearm safety. No adult would honestly tell you he uses a 22 for adult situations other than small game. The gun is great, But it is small and childlike.

A magazine doesn't make a gun an assault rifle. The law there probably limits the number of rounds a magazine can hold. I'm willing to bet that the little magazines that only hold about 7-15 rounds are perfectly legal.
Chigworthy
12-03-2007, 05:34 PM
For rifles classified as an assault rifle, they must have a fixed 5 round magazine. This means that the receiver is entirely different from a regular one in that the magzine is part of it, similar to a lot of bolt action rigs.

Hands down the SKS.
7.62x39 mm
About 100 to 150 bucks (new)
About 50 bucks to upgrade the stock to stable fiberglass, and add a peep sight and a fairly decent scope w/mount.
Avoid the Chinese SKS models, and look for the Czech models-or any ex Eastern Soviet Satellite Country.
It is incredibly accurate for the price (I can consitently hit bulleyes with the peep sights at 300 meters) and durable, and replacement parts are cheap.
Replacing the stock was mainly an aesthetic option for me, but since I am six feet tall, the longer shoulder stock was more comfortable.

A good varmint rife would be the .22-250.
From groundhogs to coyotes, it's the round to use. Small but high velocity, and the rounds are cheap
sks works well for coyotes and varmits too....but a nice bolt action 22-250 is way more accurate.

What about a T-16? Luke and me would go out to Beggar's Canyon and blast womp rats with them...and womp rats are only a meter wide.
But I don't know if they are still made. We haven't done that since we were teenagers, which was a long, long time ago..........
