so im watching olberman on Thursday night and they had a guest on that was talking a bout a Chilean economist and the economics of tragedy and how the iraq demonstrated an opportunity for American companies to privatize all dimensions of government.
The woman who was presenting this theory then said that one of the main issues facing iraq now and peace in the region is the rebellion of the locals against our attempts to privatize the country.

what in America would we allow to be privatized as far as things that we would normally be the function of government?

flip side what should be a part of government that is currently not?

That would be great if they're willing to pay $8.00 to have a
letter sent from New York to California instead of the 41 cents it is now.

No, you see the free market is always better than the government at doing ANYTHING. So if private industry took over they'd pay YOU 41 cents to send mail.

We privatize all sorts of things now, we just call them Government Contractors. It's such a bitch creating and filling a federal position, we pay more to let the contractors do it.

USPS is pretty much a private company already. From their website:

[We] Do not receive tax dollars for operations. We are a self-supporting agency, using the revenue from the sale of postage and products to pay expenses.

Corporate influence already controls most govenment policy in this country. At least in our current system we have elected representatives who have to be somewhat, albeit barely, accountable for our collective welfare. If we allow corporations to not only influence policy but to enact it for their purpose, what assurance would we have that it would be in our interest and not theirs. While I am sure this may seem alarmist with something like mail delivery, it is something every American should consider when thinking of privatizing our military.

I don't think that would be legal in this country, there is a minimum wage.
Just look at your pay stub and you'll see what it is.

Correct

The USPS is often mistaken for a government-owned corporation, but is legally defined as an "independent establishment of the executive branch of the Government of the United States," (39 U.S.C. § 201) as it is wholly owned by the government and controlled by the Presidential appointees and the Postmaster General.

In 1971, the department was reorganized as a quasi-independent agency of the federal government and acquired its present name. The postmaster general is no longer in the presidential line of succession.

Well, speaking from experience, we should re-privitize airport security. we're spending 6 billion on what used to cost only one. and we are getting very little on the return.

the only thing stopping a company from providing the services of the USPS is that there are laws against it.............:surrender:
