CLEARWATER, Fla. (AP) -- Evel Knievel, the hard-living motorcycle daredevil whose exploits made him an international icon in the 1970s, died Friday. He was 69.
Knievel's death was confirmed by his granddaughter, Krysten Knievel. He had been in failing health for years, suffering from diabetes and idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, an incurable condition that scarred his lungs.
Knievel had undergone a liver transplant in 1999 after nearly dying of hepatitis C, likely contracted through a blood transfusion after one of his bone-shattering spills.

Truly one of my first heroes. The man jumped motorcycles over buses. He beat up an author who wrote a "less than flattering" image of him, with a baseball bat while both his arms were broken and still in casts.
R.I.P. Legend.

Being totally awesome and being totally fucked up at the same time.
That being said, I know he had some liver/alcohol issues. Cancer as well. Probably complications from that.
The coffin will be catapulted over the fountains at Caesar's.

The Caeser's Palace footage above? You know who shot that? The actress Linda Friggin Evans; she was going out with/married to [?] John Derek, of Bo fame.
There are a couple of biography docus out there; some bad some better. There's one showing the two test firings of the Truax Sky Cycle that he was gonna use to try to jump the Snake River; they both spiral into that canyon like bombs from a B-29.
My fave jumps were the ones where the stadium wasnt big enough so he'd build ramps going way the fuck up in the stands to get enough speed for take-off. Just insane.
And those were stock Harleys; with a shock travel of something like 2 inches; I think he broke one in half on landing.
Insane. Like whoever said it above; it was simple: The Man jumps a motorcycle over things. Evel said any fool can do the jump; any insane-O can try, it's doing it when you know you're not gonna make it; when it doesnt feel right at all, but he never considered backing out of a jump, 'What am I gonna do? Tell them to go Home?' That was unthinkable for him.
Bummer.

The amazing thing is.... when they make the Evel Knievel movie... they're gonna need to use CGI to recreate everything that man lived through.

One of those rare icons far more famous for his spectacular failures than anything he actually succeeded at, yet still completely awesome.
Back in 1974 I actually saved up my allowance to pay to go to the local hockey arena to see the Snake River Canyon jump on pay per view. The place was fricken packed.
Rest in Peace

The movie has already been made starring the incomparable George Hamilton as Evel Knievel.
