NEW YORK (AP) — NBC's "Last Call with Carson Daly" is about to become the first late-night talk show to defy the writers strike and resume production.
Daly, who is not a member of the Writers Guild, will begin taping new episodes of his Burbank-based show this week for airing next week, an NBC spokesperson confirmed Tuesday.
The half-hour "Last Call" airs at 1:35 a.m. EST weeknights, but whether Daly's first new episode would air next Monday or Tuesday was initially unclear. No guests were disclosed.
A call for comment to the Writers Guild was not immediately returned Tuesday.
Daly is not the first talk-show host to go back into production. Ellen DeGeneres, who is a member of the union, has continued taping her daytime syndicated talk show after shutting down the first day of the strike. But "Last Call" becomes the first to break ranks among the late-night shows, which all had chosen to air repeats rather than tape new shows without their striking writers.

I was kinda hoping this show wouldn't last through the strike. You can bet Dave will be screaming about this tomorrow.

confused about why any of the REAL late night TV shows would follow the lead of THIS show, but maybe its a start.

Well, at the beginning of the strike, I had a discussion with a friend about why cant talk shows just go on anyway? Ok, Youd have to do without the monologue and/or skits, but why cant two people just sit down, no preinterview, no written questions...and TALK??? And have a musical guest.
I figured Dave, Jay and Conan would definitely be able to do this, til I realized their probably in the writers guild.
I understand sympathy strikes, etc...but when it comes down to it, if a non-union host wanted to do his show despite the strike, I dont see a problem with it.
Too bad only no talents like Ellen and Carson have the guts.

All i know is, when Conan replaces Jay, Carson better not replace Conan. Get Joel McHale from The Soup to take over.

Mayber thats why he's going back. His union writers were a bunch of overpaid, lazy hacks.
Seriously though, if he was to scour the local comedy clubs and find some funny, local comics who need a few bucks (is there another kind?) I bet he could have a hilarious show. It would probably get cancelled in about 6 months, but by that time he'd have a huge cult following and probably could get a $weet deal from a cable outlet.

I can't imagine this being likely. I like the rumor of Robert Smigel taking over Late Night.
