I've always wanted to enjoy Bob Dylan. Some of my favorite artists claim him as a major influence, but I just never have the opportunity to listen to him. I'm Dylan ignorant.

Bob Dylan is one of the my top 2 or 3 favorite musicians ever. The man amazes me. But from what I've read and seen in Don't Look Back he can be a bit of a douche at times. He seems to have mellowed as he's gotten older.

I feel a little philistinian for being so Dylan ignorant. Not that he is a douchebag as much as Springsteen or Bon Jovi, imo.

Does it really matter if ANY musician is a douche? I know a lot of people who aren't douches, who couldn't write a song to save their life.

Eddie Van Halen.
I just read the VH book and a whole load of interviews. Plays a mean geet but... definitely a douche.

There, I said it. :drunk:
There's a lot there:smoke:
early one morning what the fuck was it...
she lit a burner on the stove and offered me a pipe
"I thought you'd never say hello," she said
"You look like the silent type."
Then she opened up a book of poems
And handed it to me
Written by an Italian poet
From the thirteenth century.
And every one of them words rang true
And glowed like burnin' coal
Pourin' off of every page
Like it was written in my soul from me to you,
he's still a douche though I guess.

very interesting call on the douchbag
i totally wouldn't have called it
personally hes just some dude; its always "cool" to dig dylan
but i dont know if cool is always right
or that its kind of pretentious in that some like him just to say that they like him and lack the capacity to have any fucking clue what hes talking about
the problem with icons is that you never know what people would think of them if society hadn't constructed what that person was before you had the ability to make up your own mind
and i think part of the dylan hate would be the celebration before you could make up your own mind
can we add bono to this list?

HELLS YEAH!
Bono is thee biggest douchenozzle on earth. I have a serious hate on for ANYBODY who feels compelled to wear sunglasses at all times of day or night... indoors or out.. Anybody who thinks "sunglasses indoors" = "cool" is a f'cking loser. That includes YOU, Jack Nicholson.
thepaulo

I'm tempted to do the" sunglasses at night / blind people think they're so cool" jokes....
and yes, Dylan also wore sunglasses a lot over the years.....but any serious person considers him a genius. He also verged on foolishness and self parody all the time.....he also had that kind of arrogance that comes when you are so good at something you feel it's beneath you (like Brando). But he was a thunderbolt on the scene that we can't even imagine today. In the long run, he probably influenced more people than the Beatles. Don't see the new movie
I'm Not There, unless you are into Dylan. You won't understand a minute of it.

Dylan is thought of in the same songwriter/poet/singer/God level as John Lennon.
But you never hear people speak of Lennon as a douche. Hell, he even signed an autograph for the guy that killed him.

Awww, c'mon! Douchebag is a GREAT term! It serves as a balance between clean language and profanity.
And I am not discussing it in terms of Dylan, just as valid, useful word.

Well, Lennon was a bit of a douche, but I generally couldn't care less about the personal lives of musicians I like. Frank Zappa could have been a Nazi sympathizer for all I know. Either way, Hot Rats is a great album.

Bruce is even worse. He's a wanna be Bob Dylan, which makes him a wanna be douche bag. Bruce has been aping Dylan's music and even his mannerisms to the point where he should just call himself a cover band. Somehow, a guy born in New Jersey who has also lived in New Jersey most of his life has picked up a mid western accent along the way. What a joke.
Actually I like Dylans stuff, although sometimes people read a lot more into it that is actually there. That being said, he's written some of the most memorable lyrics of the 20th century. There was a VH-1 special on him last night and he seems to take his music a lot less seriously than his fans do, which is typical of many great artists. Folk music in general I can take or leave, especially when its way more concerned with politics than it is about music. Which unfortunately, is most of it from what I've heard. Dylan is excluded from that list IMO.

You can say that about so many great artists, sports stars, movie stars, etc. You have to separate the art from the artist. If you don't, you'll turn into Bill O'Rielly, and nobody would wish that on their worst enemy.

Of course, I'd be lying if I said I wasn't guilty of this in some areas. I probably would hate U2 a little less if I didn't know who Bono was.

Yeah, exactly. If people let politics and politial biases dominate all aspects of their lives, they'll just end up missing out on so much by closing themselves off to most of the world.

All Dylan dissers are Heathen Communists. Listen to that track and tell me he isn't the American Poet of the 20th century. Written 45 years ago, and it applies today as much as back then. In fact, most of his work can be listened to with fresh ears and be relevant, no matter what...."because the times, they're a-changing!"

I hate Johnny Ramone's politics, but those sombitches can sure make me happy for that minute and 58 seconds of a song.
Think of how boring the world would be without that crazy fuckin' Ted Nugent! All I've got to say is "Wang Dang Sweet Poontang"!

Just come down here to Atlantic County, NJ, Death Metal Moe. You'll hear it all day everyday on what is considered to be "professional" radio where local businesses actually pay these douches money to put ads on their stations.
