I use http://scrapetorrent.com I'm sure somebody can give you a reason meta search engines aren't good, but this one seems to always find whatever I'm looking for.

Utorrent is a program, not a site.
And UTorrent isn't the problem.
Quick question - do you have Comcast? If so, that's your answer.

isohunt.com
I use isohunt in conjunction with utorrent. lately when i go to download something I get odd messages on the files that they can only be viewed with a certain program calls "dom player" I found info on some sites that says that dom player is malware and is affecting sites like isohunt and programs like utorrent and winzip.

Sometimes companies hire people to put fake torrents up of their movies that contain viruses or spyware. They claim you need a codec in order to play the video, when you install the "codec" it's just a virus or spyware.
On http://www.thepiratebay.org there are comments left by users on almost all torrents so you can tell they're fake. Also get to know uploaders on there so you know you can trust them.

Here's how you trust a torrent:
- for god's sake, use PeerGuardian.
- use a popular, well seeded and well-peered torrent.
- Read the comments.
- Most videos will use an Xvid or Divx codec. Don't trust anything else.

General question from a retard. What is seeding and did I just give my ssn away on accident?
ToLEEdo

seeding is uploading the torrent. leeching is downloading the torrent.
Private torrent sites are my far the best option.

Is there a way to increase download speeds for torrents? I am stuck in the 17-30 kbs range and its rather frustrating. I'm new to this whole method and would appreciate any input.

Matters what program you're using, I'd recommend utorrent. If you're using a router, make sure the port is open. Make sure you have upload bandwidth set at max (this way it won't automatically limit download speed, you can manually lower upload bandwidth with each individual torrent afterwards) Make sure the torrent you're downloading has plenty of seeders

Normally if you do not have a login you can only download new torrents that were uploaded within the past 2 weeks (or 1 month I cannot remember). I will see if I have any codes when I get home, they try to limit how many codes you get and when you get them. I had them before they closed it but not sure if they gave them back to me.
The best thing about Demonoid is they check all the content before uploading it to the site to make sure it is real and no problems with it. Somethings do get by but they delete it right away they really are a great staff.

I switched over to uTorrent from Azureus, due to the small amount of resources (memory) uTorrent takes up. Been happy ever since.
Torrent sites I use:
http://www.isohunt.com
http://www.mininova.org
http://www/demonoid.com - need to be invited to site
http://www.thepiratebay.org
Certain Torrents go slow on some sites, where as the same or similar torrent ma go faster on another site. All about trackers and such.

Did you open up the proper ports on your router to allow torrent traffic to reach full speeds?
How many seeds are listed on the torrent you are grabbing?

What file format is it?
You'll most likely need to install divx.
http://www.divx.com/
(also, the torrent is just the thing the torrent program opens, not the actual file. you downloaded an avi or something, you know, in case you wanted to use the right words.)

will link all at bottom:
1 utorrent is great because its a tiny program and works quick for me. i have been up to 500+kbs with it
2 get yourself the peer guardian
3 demonoid.com for torrents
but subsequently if i cant find a torrent on those i will then go to mininova then to isohunt.
4 do not download any player system. you dont need to and most of the time it has malware and shit to go with it.
5. get the codec from combined comm. codecs. this will let you play everything you get on your windows media player. that's why number 4 is there
5. Divx is actually reputable but you don't NEED it

I agree. When you start installing a bunch of different codecs, and codec packs your computer can really get screwed up. Install as few as possible, just to play what's needed. I just formatted my computer to start from scratch because my codecs were so fucked up. The codecs that come with Windows Media player and VLC Media player should be enough to get you by. Stay away from codec packs.
Also, if you open a video, and the actual video is "blah blah codec needed to play this file, go to blah.com to download the codec" that's going to be a virus, don't go there.

I use UTorrent and Mininova is my site of preference. A great deal of their solid torrents (high numbers of seeders) are from Demonoid. While Demonoid requires a registration to access stuff directly from his site, he also seems very willing to share with the various good torrent sites out there. Demonoid's torrents are high quality videos as well. Always read the comments and reviews before downloading anything. While the torrent community is usually very reliable (much more so than straight peer-to-peer sharing) there has been more instances lately of infiltration from movie and TV companies trying to sabotage torrent sites. If there are several positive comments on a particular torrent, and it has a good number of seeders, then chances are good that the file is safe.

I stole Ant's idea, and use an old computer as an "AIDS computer" with minimal installations to test out downloads first.

Good job. I also have a 'dummy' computer that my files go to first. Once I know they're okay I'll share it on the network. I also agree with you that Windows Media and VLC should be the only programs you need to play videos. I love using Windows, but if a file just won't play on it VLC always works. No other CODECS or players are necessary.

This is a great suggestion.
Also, check out this Codec Pack. It is one of the best ones around, and it includes the fantastic Media PLayer Classic. Basically, this is going to install the best Codecs that some audio or video requires to work properly in media players.

well sincei cant edit.
usually compressed files which ever way they are dl'ed most are .rar anymore. I dont know any one uses .zip:flush:.
but they extract as said file types i mentioned above.
Also if you dl a file that has about 30-49 .rar files and some show up as not even the right file type just pick on and extract that into a new folder. you only need to select and extract one. then you should have you avi or mkv:clap:. those are the two i most commonly find.
