I don't understand the propaganda and gibberish coming out of that communist place that Boston is. Manny seems to be like a lovable down to earth, cuddly teddy bear.

Sure...when he's not in agonizing pain and has to sit out of important games.

I'm glad to see that "sore knee" healed for him.

JimBeam
08-19-2008, 07:57 AM
My understanding of waivers is that a team can pick him up, before the team wanting him, but then that team would be stuck w/ him and not many teams would want him right now.

I guess a team could take him to block the trade but then they'd have to take his salary and 60 MPH fastball.

I think only Arizona would really have an issue w/ this trade and it's possible that they wouldn't get a chance to claim him before the Dodgers.

Not sure if that's the case.

Thats gotta be incorrect.

If every team had two there would be 60.

I can think of two that happened to the Mets (Delgado hit the foul pole at Yankee Stadium and Beltran hit a HR that hit a bar along the seats in Fla. that was ruled a double)

I'm ready to make some early projections...don't hold me to it...just my intial impression.

*-denotes Wild Card

AL East
1. Yankees
2. Red Sox
3. Blue Jays
4. Devil Rays
5. Orioles

AL Central
1. Tigers
2. Indians*
3. White Sox
4. Twins
5. Royals

AL West
1. Mariners
2. Angels
3. Athletics
4. Rangers

NL East
I'll come back with this one in a little bit. There's something I'm still mulling over in regards to the Phillies, Mets, and Braves...namely how I think the Braves will figure into this.

NL Central
1. Cubs
2. Astros
3. Brewers
4. Reds
5. Cardinals
6. Pirates

NL West
1. Rockies
2. Dodgers*
3. Padres
4. Diamondbacks
5. Giants

NL East and NL West will be the most competitive divisions in baseball.

Yikes...talk about shitting the bed on predictions.

The Mariners are the worst team in baseball.

In my defense, I don't know anyone that had the Rays in the AL East, or anyone other than the Tigers or Indians in the AL Central at the beginning of this season.

Hurting for attendance, Nats decide to lower some ticket prices

Associated Press

WASHINGTON -- The Washington Nationals, who rank in the bottom half of Major League Baseball in attendance despite a new ballpark, are lowering some of their season-ticket prices for next season.

Prices will go down for 7,500 seats in the 41,888-seat Nationals Park, mostly in the outfield sections. Seats in most of the discounted sections will cost $5 to $10 less per game, lowering the stadium's average season-ticket price for a non-premium seat to approximately $29.

The team opted not to lower the prices of the expensive seats behind home plate, where sparse attendance has sometimes created an embarrassing image on television. Those tickets sell for as much as $400 per game.

The Nationals, in last place in the NL East, are averaging 29,509 fans per game, 18th in the majors and well below the National League-average of 34,204 following Wednesday's games.

Yeah but the MLB had already failed there twice in the past.

The other cities that made bids made much more sense:

Las Vegas; Norfolk, Va.; Monterrey, Mexico; Portland, Ore.; and Northern Virginia

I don't think we'll ever see a pro-franchise in Vegas, but I think Norfolk or Portland could have done much better

i dont know what the population size is there, and whether or not the city is big enough to carry a franchise

2007 Population:
DC-588,292 (27th)
Portland-568,380 (30th)
Norfolk-235,747 (79th)

But you have to realize that that the Orioles are 39 miles away from the Nationals, the Phillies are 100 miles and the Mets and Yankees are about 200 miles away whereas if Norfolk got a team the Orioles would be 250 miles away and the Braves would be 500 miles away

In Portland you only have the Mariners who are 175 miles away and the Giants and A's are 640 miles away.

Its more of a case of geography then population.

Well Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Hampton and Newport News all have fairly large populations and are very close to Norfolk.

The Rays new ballpark plan is set in St. Pete. They don't draw because A. they have sucked forever and B. the Trop is a disaster.

ill add C

theres nothing but old people and snowbirds in pinellas county, they dont care about baseball and dont really have the money to spend

hillsborough county where tampa is located has a more younger demographic while desposable income to spend on going to games, plus it'll be closer to orlando and pasco county, the county just north of hillsborough, it'd take close to 2 hrs for anyone in pasco to get to st pete but if you put it in tampa it'd be 30-45 minutes

Carlos Quentin has a fractured right wrist and will undergo surgery Monday to insert a screw, the White Sox announced..
This seems nearly certain to cost him the rest of the regular season. Perhaps he'll make it back in October, but it's nothing the White Sox can count on. They'll go with Nick Swisher and Ken Griffey Jr. as their regular outfielders for the rest of the season. Brian Anderson and Jerry Owens will step in when someone needs a day off.

Arizona's not quite dead yet.

Cut the lead to 2.5 today (two in the loss column).

D-Backs have four with the awful Cardinals, and finish up with three at home against Colorado.

Dodgers get the Padres for three and then finish up in San Francisco.

Dodgers Pitching Probables
Chad Billingsley (15-10) vs. Jake Peavy (9-11)

I'd revist my 'awful Cardinals' comment, but midwestjeff takes offense.

They really took a nose dive off a cliff. To be fair, though, no one really expected them to stay in as a long as they did this season.

They're a good comeback candidate for '09, though, with Wainwright and Carpenter at full strength, if they can patch their bullpen together.

...and if Pujols puts off his inevitable Tommy John surgery.

Well, Hank Steinbrenner is marking the occasion of the Yankees being eliminated from playoff contention in a classy way, congratulating the Red Sox for yet another playoff appearance, and congratulating the Rays on their ascent.

Nah, just kidding. He's bitching about how divisions are set up in baseball.

"The biggest problem is the divisional setup in Major League Baseball," Steinbrenner wrote. "I didn't like it in the 1970s, and I hate it now. Baseball went to a multi-division setup to create more races, rivalries and excitement. But it isn't fair.

"You see it this season, with plenty of people in the media pointing out that Joe Torre and the Dodgers are going to the playoffs while we're not. This is by no means a knock on Torre -- let me make that clear -- but look at the division they're in. If L.A. were in the AL East, it wouldn't be in the playoff discussion. The AL East is never weak."

The Dodgers (81-75) are pacing the National League West, one season after Torre turned down an incentive-based one-year contract offer to continue managing the Yankees.

"I'm happy for Joe, but you have to compare the divisions and the competition," Steinbrenner said. "What if the Yankees finish the season with more wins than the Dodgers, but the Dodgers make the playoffs? Does that make the Dodgers a better team? No."

Boo hoo, Hank. The problem is that the Rays pursued a smart strategy to improve their team, while you continued to sign 'roid-heads past their prime to fat contracts and raped your farm system doing it.

And how'd you like to end up in a 6 team division like the teams in the NL Central are in?

Hank Steinbrenner: as obnoxious as his daddy, but way stupider.

An anonymous clubhouse insider told the Seattle Times that Mariners teammates were so annoyed with Ichiro Suzuki earlier this season that they considered beating him up.

"I just can't believe the number of guys who really dislike him," said the insider. "It got to a point early on when I thought they were going to get together and go after him." The coaching staff and then-manager John McLaren intervened when one player was overheard talking about wanting to "knock him out." Perhaps the goal would have been to knock him around like the rest of the league has done to Carlos Silva this year, but given Mariners' hitters reputations, it's likely that the team could land several blows and still not do any damage. It's not as though Richie Sexson had a chance of making contact. Sep. 25 - 1:28 pm et

If the Mets get in, it'll almost certainly be with a one game playoff, because I can't see Pinella playing many of his starters this weekend against Milwaukee

I think the Mets' best chance to jump on Florida early. If they can get out to a 4-0, 5-0 lead early in a couple of these games, I think Florida will quit.

But if Florida stays in these games, they'll play hard, for the bragging right of knocking the Mets out two years in a row, and that's where it's just hard to trust the Met bullpen.

That said, the Mets have done pretty well in the first three innings all year.

Honestly, I have a slight, slight inclination towards the Brewers, but I have no clue what the hell will happen.

I will say, I'd be absolutely stunned if the Phillies got knocked out. You can't ask for a much easier set up then they have right now. It would be pretty crushing.

I don't sweat the Dodgers this year either, but the the Cubs almost took three of four from the Mets with their JV squad.

How can you not want the Mets?...you'd only have to face Santana once, as well, since they won't be able to set their rotation even if they got in.

The Dodgers or Mets or Brewers are a toss-up; if the Cubs lose to them it's because they played shittily and slumped in a short series and lost to crappier teams. The only team I would like to see the Cubs avoid are the Phillies. The Phillies have so much power and such a good bullpen...scary. I think the Cubs have much better starters and a more consistent lineup, but it ends up being about a wash as to which team is actually better.

Interesting: (http://baseballanalysts.com/archives/designated_hitter/)

Many people call the baseball playoffs a “crapshoot” including Braves skipper Bobby Cox. A’s GM Billy Beane was quoted in Moneyball as saying: “My (expletive) doesn’t work in the playoffs. My job is to get us to the playoffs. What happens after that is (expletive) luck.” The historical data presented in this article absolutely supports those sentiments. Considering that 51% of all playoff series are won by the lesser team indicates that it might as well be a coin flip. The MLB playoffs are indeed a crapshoot. Good luck to the Angels, the Cubs and all the playoff teams…with emphasis on LUCK.

Wasn't the 2000 Subway Series a colossal failure outside of New York?

I don't think the two team rivalries play very well outside of the host city.

Cubs/White Sox could be the exception the rule this year, because of the storyline of the Cubs breaking the 100 year curse, with the cross-town rivals as the only obstacle in the way.

1) Cole Hammels is a beast, just a flat out stud.

2) Manny hit a ball tonight that was low and it looked like he got it off the end of the bat, it still sailed a good 75 feet into the left center stands. thats power.

3) The Cubs are playing not to lose instead of playing to win.

Article from earlier this week in the LA Times about Manny Ramirez :

http://www.latimes.com/sports/printedition/la-sp-simers28-2008sep28,0,7148173.column

I used to defend this guy, even as a non-Red Sox fan, but the more I read about him now the more I despise him.

The one thing that sticks out to me, when people especially now in LA try to make him seem misunderstood, is the story about him throwing down the old guy that worked in red Sox management.

I thought it was horseshit that the Red Sox themselves seemed to ignore the matter but for that incident to not be forever attached to his personal legacy is a joke.

He wants the game to end and not to be talked about when it's over well then the non-game things that happen off the field should be talked about more.

Dodgers vs. Red Sox is the best match up. West Coast vs. East Coast, Manny vs. Red Sox, Torre going to the series after the Yankee brass drummed him outta' the organization, Sox trying to establish themselves as team of the decade.

Rays vs. Phillies would be a disaster and having either one of those teams facing either one of the other teams really doesn't have any appeal to anyone outside their fan bases.

Report: Japan tries to discourage amateurs from playing in MLB with ban
ESPN.com news services

Established Japanese professional players have been coming to Major League Baseball for several years. However, Japan's 12 pro baseball teams are trying to make it so the country's amateur players don't follow suit.

Japan's 12 teams have voted on a conditional ban on any amateur player who signs with an overseas professional team, the Mainichi Daily News reported. The move comes after Junichi Tazawa, a 22-year-old star pitcher, announced his intentions to play in Major League Baseball instead of Japan.

Japanese amateurs who sign with an overseas pro team out of high school will be banned from playing in Japan for three years, while amateurs who sign with an overseas pro team from a university or company team would be banned for two years.

The ban will be in effect for Japan's professional draft on Oct. 30 and should apply to Tazawa. The ban will apply to players who choose to play with an overseas pro team despite being drafted by a Japanese team or players who refuse to be nominated for the Japanese draft.

Tazawa led the Nippon Oil Corp. team to the title in Japan's intercity baseball tournament and was named MVP. He announced his intentions to the play in the majors on Sept. 11 and wrote a letter to Japan's pro teams requesting not to be drafted.

I imagine it's three years from the point you reapply for instatement, so it'd be essentially three additional years after a player returned to Japan.

That said, I don't think it'll cause a huge effect. All it will do is boost the initial contract offers from the MLB clubs to the amateur free agents, because there's some risk involved for the Japanese players if they bottom out in the MLB minor league system.

I really hope this really turns the Rays into a real solid franchise that can play at this level for a long while, and it's not a Marlins situation where they win it all and then get dismantled.

My guess is that Rays' ownership will try their absolute best to avoid that, particularly if they want a new park. And I don't know what the contract situations on the team are, so they might not have to pay up too much next year.

But if they can hold it together, I think for the next few years, at least, it'll be the Red Sox and Rays battling for the AL East, and not a certain other team.

The Braves aren't in full rebuilding mode until they trade Chipper Jones, which they don't appear like they're going to do.

But regardless, I'd do it in a second if I were them. Peavy is signed through 2013. He's a guy you can build around.

Peavy, McCann, Kotchman, one out of Escobar/Johnson (assuming the other gets traded in the deal), Jurrjens, Campillo.

That's the beginnings of a pretty impressive core.

If they could just figure out Francoeur, they'd only be another year or two away.

I'll bet good money Chipper isn't a Brave next year.

And there's no chance Peavy ends up on the Braves. They're out. (http://www.sportsline.com/mlb/story/11056557) In fact, I'd bet any leftover money on Peavy not being moved at all this offseason.

It would be smart to trade Chipper now, because I don't think they're going to contend next year either.

They'd be lucky to finish 4th in the NL East in 2009.

But I'm not so sure he'll get moved. He has a no trade and he doesn't really want to.

I can't understand why the Padres were shopping Peavy to begin with. It's completely ridiculous. But it's more ridiculous for the Braves to completely disregard negotiating for him.

I'm not sure there's a prospect I wouldn't trade for him (maybe David Price). He's still young, he's under contract until '13, and he's one of the best pitchers in baseball.

I'd be tossing coke and hookers through the Padres GM's window night and day to get this guy.

Call me sentimental, but there are some guys you don't trade in baseball. The Phillies didn't trade Mike Schmidt to "extract his value", or the Cubs trade Ryne Sandberg. There are some lines a team shouldn't cross.
