Will Angelos kill Roberts deal? (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2008/writers/jon_heyman/02/11/heyman.Feb11scoop/index.html?eref=writers)
Orioles owner Peter Angelos, who is famous for meddling in baseball matters and killing deals, showed some definite progress in allowing Baltimore VP Andy MacPhail to trade two of Angelos' favorites -- shortstop Miguel Tejada and starting pitcher Erik Bedard -- and many figured that once Angelos signed off on Bedard, he'd also give the go-ahead to trade second baseman Brian Roberts to the Cubs.
It only makes sense. Bedard's trade signaled that the Orioles' rebuilding process is in full flight, so there's less reason to keep Roberts. But sense and the Orioles don't always go hand-in-hand.
There is now a feeling in Orioles land that Angelos may be balking at the negotiated haul for Roberts, which according to sources, is a very fair three-player package of young pitcher Sean Gallagher, outfielder Matt Murton and infielder Ronny Cedeno. There is also a sense that Angelos has an unreasonable attachment to Roberts, who may well remind the owner of himself: a little guy who's scrapped his way to the top of his profession
Angelos has killed trades involving Roberts before. And apparently even Roberts' inclusion in the Mitchell Report and admission as a steroid user hasn't dulled Angelos' affection for him.

Matt Murton does not make sense the Orioles are already crowded in the OF and dont need another one, Murton is the trash the Cubs are simply trying to peddle and i dont think the orioles will take him unless the cubs take someone like Jay Payton back from them. Cedeno is only being included because the need to fill the 2B slot when Roberts is gone but Murton makes no sense.
I also think Angelos has given the reins in full to MacPhail to do what he sees fit to make the team better, but since Roberts is under control for two more years they may hold him for a year and deal him next year

Oh im not doubting that he can play but the Orioles already have in the OF: Luke Scott, Adam Jones and Markakis who are the starting 3. They then have Tike Redman, Jay Payton and Jay Gibbons in the OF as back ups and even if you move Gibbons to DH they would already have 5 OF's and Murton just does not fit, so like i said they would take him if the Cubs take Jay Payton back in the deal which we all know wont happen, not to mention the O's have a young OF by the name of Nolan Reimold in the minors who they want to bring up.
It just doesnt make sense to trade for another OF and a few posts above I even said that Pie doesnt even really make sense in a deal

Point taken...also as a cubs fan I dont want to lose Pie yet because I dont think he was at his potential last year but he may be this year. We are also saturated with outfielders though.

While I agree that the O's potentially have a crowded outfield, Murton is pretty fucking far from "trash." He's only being used as a trading piece since he's effectively shut out of the starting corner OF slots by Soriano and Fukudome. Personally, I want to hold onto him either as the main corner OF backup, a good, patient bat of the bench with some power, or as a trading chip for someone more useful and necessary than Roberts. Murton is young, cheap, and has succeeded at the ML level for a couple years now...teams will want that. Don't waste him on a redundant player like Roberts.
And I'm not slamming Roberts...he's a very good player and if the Cubs had a need for a better 2B, I'd be all for him. But with DeRosa and Eric Patterson, they don't need a 2nd bagger at all. What they desperately need is a SS, but Jim Hendry is delusional and thinks that the Cubs are fine with Ronnie Cedeno and Ryan Theriot fighting out for that spot. I actually have some faith that Cedeno will turn into a decent SS, given how well he's done in the minors and how young he is, but it's not a good move to go into this season waiting and seeing if Cedeno can hack it AND basically testing Pie as a ML CFer. That's just not smart. You gotta stagger rookies at such key positions.
And I really don't wat to give up Gallagher. He's shown a lot in the minors already and he's just shed about 25 pounds, helping put a few more miles on his fastball. With guys like Lieber, Marquis and Dempster seemingly battling for the #4 and #5 starting pitcher slots, shedding guys like Gallagher who are likely about to make the leap seems really dumb unless it's for a slam bang improvement in a spot the Cubs need to improve. I've been clamoring for the Cubs to try and offer Pie and Gallgher and Cedeno (and even another top pick if needed) for either Kahlil Greene or Hanley Ramirez to shore up SS and then just sign Lofton for CF. Then they still have Kevin Hart and Sean Marshall who can start (and maybe even Carlos Marmol down the line) and they would have just cemented their lineup. Sign Lofton for 2 years and then their other CF prospect, Tyler Colvin, would take over after him. Done and done.
But what do I know?

Fallout from the Santana contract (http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2008/02/baseball-blog-4.html)
Baseball Blogs Weigh In: Johan Santana's Contract
The biggest move of this year's Hot Stove League was clearly the trade of Johan Santana. The subsequent contract given to Santana by the Mets set a new benchmark for pitchers and could have a lasting trickle-down effect on other pitchers in baseball. The players most likely to cash in on the Santana deal are other young lefties with strong track records. The first fallout appears to be in Cleveland, with the recent news that C.C. Sabathia has broken off contract talks. With pitchers and catchers conducting their first workouts in many camps today, let's take a look at how Santana's deal is affecting other pitchers in the blogosphere.
Let's Go Tribe feels that Sabathia could command $150MM on the open market and breaking off contract talks means Sabathia will not be a member of the Indians in 2009.
Indians Confidential agrees that Sabathia is "as good as gone."
Tribe Report does not think the Indians should give Sabathia a seven-year deal as it is a stretch to think he will be worth $20MM at age 35.
MLB Fleece Factor calls it "The Santana Effect" and believes that Santana's new deal means that A.J. Burnett will likely opt out of his contract in Toronto following the 2008 season. In addition, they believe that there is a possibility that the Jays will look to trade Roy Halladay prior to his 2010 free agency.
Rays Index believes there is a good chance the Rays will look to trade Scott Kazmir following the 2008 season. They feel that Santana's deal will make it nearly impossible for the Rays to sign Kazmir to an extension prior to his 2010 free agency. In addition, the recent bounty obtained by the Orioles for Erik Bedard and the pipeline of top pitching prospects in the Rays' system, suggest that it is in the best interest of the franchise to move their young ace.
If I'm a Met fan I wouldn't care much about this, but that record setting deal is sending shockwaves across Baseball.

K-Rod likely to leave Angels after 08 (http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2008/02/k-rod-may-lea-1.html)
It's looking more and more like 2008 will be Francisco Rodriguez's last season with the Angels. His '08 contract situation is not said to be the reason he's late to camp. But the two sides are a solid $2.5MM apart and Rodriguez will try to become the first player to win a hearing this year on Thursday. Mike DiGiovanna thinks the hearing "could lead to animosity."
Rodriguez recently turned 26. He has a career ERA of 2.37 in 383 innings, with 146 saves under his belt. That's the most saves in baseball history for a pitcher before his 26th birthday. Gregg Olson is next with 131, then Chad Cordero with 128.
Currently scheduled to join K-Rod in the free agent closer class of 2008-09: Joe Nathan, Brad Lidge, Jason Isringhausen, Trevor Hoffman, and Eric Gagne.
Wow, I had no idea he's still that young. He could get 5 years or more from somebody.

Ruben Gotay could get tricky for the Mets. If they bring back Valentin as their back infielder they could lose Gotay, who's much younger.
I think its safe to say Carlos Pena won't be sent back to the minors after last year.
Anyone remember Andy Marte? Thats was the big time prospect that the Bosox got from the Braves in the Rentaria trade, who they flipped for Coco Crisp. If he can't earn a spot on the Tribe, he could hit the wire. Amazing.
BTW-Here's the rules if anyone needs them. (http://espn.go.com/mlb/s/transanctionsprimer.html)

Those are a few interesting names. I agree that Pena is pretty safe to make the team, and Gotay questionable- however I doubt it would be due to Valentin (although its possible) - he has been making big strides post injury. The big things they need is a backup SS (Gotay did it last year) and a right handed bat.
What about the National's ?
Maybe 4th...Florida's not looking too sharp.
The Nats will actually have a solid offense...and a great bullpen. Absolutely dreadful starting pitching, though.
How the HELL would the Astros possibly come in 2nd in the NL Central?
They're going to have a pretty damn good offense this year...and their bullpen will shake out to be solid, I think.
Still have questions about the rotation, but the Central's not a particularly good division.

It's not, but the Brewers, Cubs and even Cardinals track to be better than them. I'm not sure why you think the Astros have an all around good offense. They have like 3 threats and then a lot of middling or worse or just plain old. Combine that with a starting rotation that's shaping up to be a disaster, I don't see the Astros getting higher than 3rd as anything short of a huuuuuuge upset.

I think the Cardinals are the mess...I could see the Brewers/Astros flipped at 2 and 3, but Berkman/Lee/Pence/Tejada is a good foundation...then throw in Michael Bourn who I saw a lot of last year, and I think that team will score a lot of runs in that ballpark.
I will say that the rotation is my one caveat with the team, but Oswalt is still an ace, and I think Backe back healthy will help a lot. Wandy could go either way.
I can legitimately see them in 2nd....I think 2nd in the NL Central isn't necessarily going to be that good, though...a few games over .500....maybe 83-79.

I don't think the Mets will carry 2 backup infielders on the 25 man unless one could play 1B and be a right handed defensive caddy for DelGado. So far, Gotay hasn't played any 1B (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/splits?statsId=7396&type=batting3)If he does learn, he's a decent fit, hits lefties. Not as much pop as you'd like, but you could live w/it. Beats losing him.
The Mets might also end up going with an extra bullpen pitcher. The Mets will be using their bullpen plenty with Pedro and El Duque on the staff. Maine and Perez appear to be a 6 inning pitchers as well.

I don't think Berkman or Tejada are at the points in their careers where they can do enough to carry the dead weight in their lineup. Hitting in that joke of a park helps, but then when they hit the road, they're screwed.
I agree, the Cardinals are a mess, but they've managed to pull off "miracles" with garbage too many times under LaRussa for me to count them out.

Barry Bonds to join the Tampa Bay Rays?
Bonds is a prick but this might be the best hype story in years for Thunder Bay.
Do you know of any sports-hype stories that rival this one?

I thought he didn't want to play in the Minor Leagues.
I'd just be very surprised i the Astros end up higher than 3rd, or if they even end up in 3rd.
Berkman's still good enough...Tejada could go either way...I wonder how much of his decline in production was playing for a dead team and being out of the playoff hunt in May most of the time, for so many years.
Guys like Pence and Bourn could be future stars in the making...just to give people an idea...Michael Bourn was the fastest guy on a team that had both Shane Victorino and Jimmy Rollins. And Lee is still a basher.
I don't know...I think if they can find a little starting pitching from within their system, they'll be solid.
Would it surprise me if they're horrible, though? No.

Given that his decline has been steady as he's gotten older and he's suffered a bad wrist injury relatively recently, I wouldn't bet on him.

Cabrera, Tigers talking extension (http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2008/02/miguel-cabrera.html)
SI.com's Jon Heyman reports that the Tigers and Miguel Cabrera's agent have "begun to talk" about a long-term deal. Heyman believes a deal could be hammered out fairly quickly given the nice fit with Detroit for Cabrera. Heyman doesn't have inside info on the years or amount, but got Cabrera to admit that ten years, $200MM sounded about right.
As eye popping as that number is, teams generally are the winners with these extensions. That's why everyone is doing them with their young stars. Risk of career ending injury is fairly small, and with baseball salary inflation at around 14% annually since the 94 strike even a deal like this ends up looking cheap about halfway through it.

Angelos Gives MacPhail Permission To Move Roberts (http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2008/03/angelos-gives-m.html)
This morning it was reported that the Cubs had two scouts at the Orioles' spring game yesterday to watch Brian Roberts.
Now, several people have written in to let us now that Bruce Levine of ESPN 1000 is reporting that Peter Angelos has given Andy MacPhail the green light to trade Roberts. It has long been rumored that Angelos might have been holding up the trade to the Cubs because of his personal affection for Roberts. With Angelos' blessing, this deal may finally happen in the next few days.
Yes, it looks like its really looks like the deal is going to happen.
No really. This time he means it.

Mariners Working On Multi-Year Deal For Hernandez (http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2008/03/mariners-workin.html)
Yet another big extension, buying out his arbitration years. This one is more risky, though. Doing one for a pitcher makes less sense than a position player. But they probably feel he's poised to develop into the stud pitcher we all heard he'll be, so they'd rather make a deal now than go in front of an arbitrator after he wins 20 and strikes out 250-300.

Yeah i cant believe they sent Jay Bruce down for Corey Patterson, they are saying its because they want speed at the top of the order and that only left Hopper and Patterson and they both play CF for them so. My question is, if they were going to do this with Jay Bruce (sign Patterson keep Hopper), why didnt they just make the trade with the Orioles for Bedard? The Orioles would have gotten a very similar package from the Reds then what they got from the Mariners (centerpiece Adam Jones).
And i will say that listening to the Reds games out here on 700 AM is pretty good when driving around, hes very good at keeping things entertaining

Dodgers manager Joe Torre informed Juan Pierre that he'd begin the season on the bench.
Way to go, Joe. Of course, it took a huge spring disparity to make it happen, even though Andre Ethier was the better option in left field from the moment Andruw Jones was signed. Pierre hasn't demanded a trade, though he's clearly going to be unhappy to find himself on the bench. It's hard to blame him, considering he's the same player now that he was when the Dodgers gave him a five-year, $44 million contract. Mar. 30 - 3:55 pm et

But does everyone notice in all the major sports, ESPN has an "integrated" studio crew? In NASCAR, they have a black guy, in MNF, they have a black guy, in baseball, they have a black guy, etc. etc.
I know kudos should be given to ESPN for this, but it also makes me think that it's one of the main reasons that Morgan has a job. For God's sake, they got rid of irvin for Keyshawn, SURELY there's a well-spoken mulatto former player who can usurp Morgan's position.

Teams do that alot to lower their service time so they become free agents later than they would if they brought them up at the beginning of the year. The Rays are being accused of doing it with Evan Longoria as well. It sucks, but that's the system. The players certainly get even once they become free agents.

Ahhhhh....that's at tough one...I really like Zimmerman, too, and he had impressive numbers in the triple crown categories, but Ramirez scored over 100 runs, stole over 50 bases, hit like 45 doubles, close to 200 hits, and batted for higher average that year. Plus, he still hit 17 HRs from the lead-off spot.
That's pretty sharp.

I love the stadium and this team - moments before Ryan won it all, I had just finished saying that my favorite memory of the Nats was 2 years ago during the Yankees game when Zim got his first walk off hr to win it big. It was freakish last night.
We had zero problems with the metro, even switching trains at L'Enfant Plaza; cold as hell; huge open concorses, so if you are stuck in a food or bathroom line, you still can see into the stadium (even if you can't see the playing); I do hate the two above-ground parking garages, but i will give them credit in having them blend in as best they could; it's very cool that there are stands for Five Guys, Red Hot and Blue, Hard Times and (hell to the yeah) Ben's Chili Bowl (most of the hot dog stands have the "Bens" options too!); i spent way too much money, but it was THE first.

Now that's a nice touch. Five Guy's has gotten more famous with franchising but Ben's is DC's signature place (http://www.benschilibowl.com/).

i go down to dc 2-3 times a year. i have been to rfk when the nats played there and we took a train (DC's version of a subway i think) and it took us right to the stadium. it was the hottest sweatiest ride i have ever been on. anyway, i heard that the new stadium is much further away from the old stadium and that you have to drive to it. is this true? i usually stay somewhere in the heart of dc (k st, penn ave, 19th st etc) how would i get to the stadium and how long would it take?

It's on the Navy Yard stop on the Green Line (RFK was the Stadium Armory stop on the Blue/Orange Line). If you stay downtown, you can switch over at L'Enfant Plaza.

have you noticed that the train system is so fucking hot? do they have ac on the train? last time we went me, crippler and my friend were soaked with sweat once we got to rfk.

last time we went me, crippler and my friend were soaked with sweat once we got to rfk.
Yeah, yeah, blame it on the train and not the PASSION.
I should have mentioned before that during rush hour in DC, particularly at downtown stops, the Metro trains are always packed with the great unwashed. It's not uncommon to have to wait to catch another train. The same thing is now going to happen on gameday. The beginning and end of the season could be problematic when you have overlap of Wizards/Caps games at the Verizon Center and Nats games at the Stadium. Metro Center (downtown) is going to be crazy.
The trains have AC but when they're packed like that, it's not noticeable. Now picture the middle of summer when it's hot, full of tourists, AND people going to the game.
If you time your trip right (either way early or cutting it close to the first pitch), it shouldn't be too bad.
The Navy Yard metro stop is MUCH closer to National's Park than the subway stop at RFK was. It feels like it's almost right on top of it, actually.
The Green Line intercuts with two major transfer stations - Gallery Place and L'Enfant Plaza - which connects the entire system together (Red, Orange, Blue and Yellow lines). The switchover at L'Enfant will take people some getting use to, but it went so smooth last night with us that i'd easily do it again.
There is free parking at RFK with free shuttle to the new stadium - supposedly that runs about 30 minutes. I loved the parking at RFK - huge lot, with a lot of tail gating. I'll miss that.
Five Guy's has gotten more famous with franchising
True, but no matter how big it gets, it did start here, and there was something about smelling those burgers in the stands that made me happy.
The line for Ben's was the biggest in the park, but like i said, it was pretty sweet that you could get the chili at most of the regular "Nat's Dogs" vendors.

yeh all b/c he was standing too close

yeh all b/c he was standing too close
i say fuck it if he wants to stand there, let him
He's pissed to say the least:
Bowa was tossed in the sixth inning against the San Francisco Giants by umpire Ed Montague, who had told him to keep within the boundaries of the coaching box. Bob Watson, baseball's vice president in charge of discipline, cited Bowa for "inappropriate and aggressive conduct," which included making contact with Montague several times.
"It's ludicrous is what it is. Probably the suspension's more ludicrous than the rule," Bowa said before Wednesday night's game. "There's no due process. For getting kicked out of the game, you get a three-game suspension. It's totally uncalled for. I have no idea why. You have to ask the people in New York that wear the coats and ties and don't get on the field.
"You've got guys who tested positive for steroids and admitted they took them -- no suspensions. They're still playing," Bowa said.
The very least Bowa expected from Watson after his ruling was an explanation.
"I got a fine, which I expected. But I don't even know what the fine is, to be honest with you," Bowa said. "I left a voicemail, and obviously I knew I wouldn't get a return call from him. They don't want to hear the coach's side of the story."
Bowa is convinced that Watson is trying to make an example out of him.
"He's done it since I've been out of baseball as a player -- as a coach and as a manager. That's his gig. He wants to get me any way he can get me," Bowa said. "Bob Watson's very prejudiced against me for some reason."

Twins send struggling Liriano to minors (http://www.sportsnetwork.com/merge/tsnform.aspx?c=sportsnetwork&page=mlb/news/newstest.aspx?id=4146514)
The Minnesota Twins sent struggling pitcher Francisco Liriano to Triple-A Rochester on Friday.
Liriano missed the entire 2007 season after undergoing "Tommy John" surgery and is 0-3 with an 11.32 earned run average in three starts this season.
In 2006 before the injury, Liriano was one of the best pitchers in baseball, posting a record of 12-3 with a 2.16 earned run average. His move into the starting rotation that season helped the Twins turn their season around and capture the AL Central title.
Amazing. From one of the best pitchers in baseball to TJ surgery to the minors. What a (not so) long, strange trip it's been.

Well, it's the end of a REALLY long era:
Julio Franco finally called it quits.
The 49-year-old announced his retirement from baseball after a 23-year career in the major leagues and stints in his native Dominican Republic, South Korea, Japan and Mexico. In 2007, he became the oldest player to hit a home run in the majors.
"It was the hardest decision in my life," Franco said in an interview published Saturday by Mexican sports daily Record. "I always said I would be the first one to know the exact moment. I think the numbers speak for themselves, the production speaks and this is the right moment.
"I understand that my time has passed and the great men and athletes know when to say enough." (http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/wire?section=mlb&id=3379845)
