start, or enter when playing this version. You have to be careful cause you lose the star if you get hit and it sucks to have that super punch blocked

I think you press Select. It's that or Start, but I'm assuming you can pause the fights. I haven't played it in a while, but it was always one of my favorites. I used to play emulators all the time.
