I know this thread is nearly two yrs old but I thought I'd comment...

From a biomedical perspective there are a few ways acupuncture effects the body...

1) The simple act of inserting a foreign object into the body stimulates the immune system.

2) There is something called the spinal gate theory in which placing a needle along the nerve pathway blocks the sensation of pain from reaching the brain. Purely a temporary effect.

3) Being punctured will stimulate the nervous system, particularly nerves that detect temperature, vibration, and pressure... After a certain time of needle retention the brain will start to dump endorphins into body as well as neurochemicals unique to the induvidual..

4) As medicine progresses and our understanding of how the body works as an electrical circuit improves... there will probably also be an explanation on how acupuncture works on this level as well...

From a very traditional perspective the body (all parts seen and unseen) is thought of as a construct of binary language... yin & yang... the goal of the acuupuncturist is to find where the patient is out of balance and then use needles (or other things) to stimulate key areas of the body to restore balance...
