We lost one of the greatest writers, composers and frontmen in the history of music, 16 years ago. (Nov. 24, 1991)
Save your bathrobe and broth jokes, please. Because in his final days, that was Freddie. His closest friends have tearfully stated that. But he NEVER stopped being Freddie Mercury. He was doing vocals for the last album in 10 minute intervals, but never gave up. His music was his true passion!
I was fortunate enough to see Queen at Madison Square Garden, then again at Live Aid. His performance at the Barcelona Olympics, when we knew he was sick, still brings me to tears.
RIP, Farrokh. We love you, man!

No band has had more of an impact on me than Queen did.
My father can tell you stories of me being NINE years old, listening to Queen on my little Mrantz mono tape deck, and asking "how do they get it to sound like that?!"
When I was 11 and all my friends were outside playing sports, I was in my basement with 2 dual cassette decks and a cheap microphone trying to "produce" my own a capella recording of "Bohemian Rhapsody".
Now, I make my living in the music industry. On both sides of the glass.
Queen & Def Leppard really pushed the envelope in the studio. Some of those recordings STILL somehow sound modern. Not all but, definitely some.
That's amazing.

I'm a huge fan of Queen. Their music never fails to put emotion into me. One of my favorite songs is "Save Me", which is about a failed relationship, but incredibly beautiful.

Tub, the Barcelona Olympics were 8 months after he died... and although his health was in question, he never performed after he confirmed he was HIV+...

Fair enough. He confirmed he was positive 2 day before he died. Clear me up on the Freddie & Monserat Caballo video that I saw during Barcelona?

Perhaps a tribute.

For my money, this thread could go on forever. Queen deserves that.
Aaaanyway, two weeks ago, a newly restored, reMIXED, and remastered Queen DVD was released. It is a sight to behold.
Here's the info.

Also, there is a MAKING OF: A NIGHT AT THE OPERA dvd that contains a considerable amount of bonus footage. The documentary that airs on VH1classics is edited to fit into one hour.

from wikipedia:There were two main musical themes of the 1992 Games. One was "Barcelona", written five years earlier by Freddie Mercury and sung as a duet with Montserrat Caballé. The duo were to have performed the song during the opening ceremony, but due to Mercury's untimely death the year before, the song was played over a travelogue of the city at the start of the opening ceremony. The other was "Amigos Para Siempre" (Friends for Life), written by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Don Black, and sung by Sarah Brightman and José Carreras during the closing ceremonies.

I've seen Queen about 5 times total. By far the best live shows I've ever seen. I've been a fan since junior high school, and actually got to meet them at a Crazy Eddie opening on 57th street. One of the best days of my life. My favorite album is still Queen II...it's a work of art. I still think about Freddie from time to time to this day.

I was at Berkeley in the Fall of '91, and I remember vividly hearing or reading that Freddie Mercury was very ill with AIDS at the time. I was in a Vinyl shop in Haight-Ashbury looking at records, and I mentioned it to the owner. He said he hadn't heard a thing ( and he'd surely know..). He thought I was making it up.
A few days later came the announcement that he had indeed been very ill and subsequently died. To this day I can't recall what my 'source' was. ( It wasn't a dream or something silly. Just an awful coincidence, I imagine).

Freddie Mercury (5 September 1946 – 24 November 1991) was a British musician, best known as the frontman of the rock band Queen. As a performer, he was known for his vocal prowess and flamboyant performances.[2][3][4] As a songwriter, he composed many international hits, including "Bohemian Rhapsody", "Killer Queen", "Somebody to Love", "Don't Stop Me Now", "Crazy Little Thing Called Love", and "We Are the Champions". Fronted by Mercury, Queen went on to sell more than 300 million albums internationally.[5][6]
..... In 2008, Rolling Stone ranked him number 18 on their list of the 100 greatest singers of all time.[3][9][10]
