View Full Version : Overrated Rivalries?

Today is the Ohio State-Michigan game. I go to a small liberal arts school in Ohio so I am quite exposed to this rivalry and not being connected to either team I find this whole rivalry a bit much. What is the most overrated rivalry?

Just one that comes to mind immediately is Bama/Tenn.
3rd Saturday in October this honkus.
Not nearly as " juicey " as Bama/LSU or Bama/Auburn.
Maybe when Peyton was there but I now look forward to this game as much as I do Ole Miss/UGA or any other random SEC matchup.

Seriously, how is it overrated? Overcovered, maybe, but that is one of the most genuine and emotional and longest-lasting rivalries in pro sports.
The last time this rivalry mattered, the Cubs were a World Series dynasty.

To Cougar's point I think it's more of a regional thing.
People out West and in the South, that aren't a fan of either team, couldn't give a shit about that series.
Like the World Series with the Yanks and Mets that whole Suway Series didn't make sense to anybody that wasn't from a place that had a subway.
I'm sure some of the West Coast series mean a lot to the folks out there but wouldnt mean crap to any of us back east.
It's kinda like a self fulfilling prophecy.
MLB and televevision continuoulsy show that matchup and it leads people to believe that it might be one of the bigger rivalries but is it really any bigger than some others ?

As a former player for Yale, I can say that the Game is a heated rivalry for those schools. It is important for the rest of the world? No, because these teams won't be in NCAA championship picture anymore. But to say that the rivalry between the two isn't heated, is completely ignorant. The Game was the most important part of any season, and a great event for the schools.
Yes, it's not what it once was, but as shown by 60k showing up today, it's still pretty big for those schools.

I do think that because of the amount of fans outside of the Boston New York area (bandwagon or otherwise) the red sox/yankee rivalry is a big one. It may be the arrogance of some of the fans and/or players on both sides that makes people outside of the rivalry despise it. For the record Im a cubs fan so I don't really participate in this rivalry but I can appreciate it.

Oh, I was just making a slight goof, that's all. Having grown up outside of New Haven, I know how big that game is. Just as I work for the Navy, I know how big the Army-Navy game is. Sure, they're not vying for a national championship but the history and tradition are as compelling as any other rivalry - if not moreso.

I was reacting to Hippo's comments that this rivalry wasn't heated, except for chess.
I really didn't have that much of a problem with your comments, because the rivalry hasn't mattered to the rest of the college football world since the 1920's (Yale won its last football championship in 1927). But that doesn't mean it's not a heated rivalry for those schools.
Plus, since these schools' alumni rule the world (see Jezo's latest thread), you all would be wise not to say otherwise.

I just can't imagine the pros take professional sports rivalries seriously. With free agency and players going from one rival to another (Johnny Damon BOS-NYY comes to mind) it pretty much becomes something for the fans to talk, bitch, and dwell on. Back in the day the professional players were the ones involved in the rivalries. Hell, Jackie Robinson retired than play for the Giants! He hated them that much, thats what a rivalry is. The difference is, I hate the Dodgers with a passion, but I can't image Matt Cain, Rich Aurilla, or Bruce Bochy feel the same way.
The real rivalry lies in college sports. Players and fans are attached to that school and will be for the rest of their lives. In Oregon the two key games all year (no matter how awful the season) is to beat Washington and Oregon State. ESPECIALLY Oregon State. The players know it, the coaches know it, and the fans live for it. Joey Harrington cared about beating Oregon State, do you think TO even knows who Dallas considers a rival?

I had been clamoring for Soto to get more starts as soon as Barrett was gone. Most Cubs fans that paid any attention to the minors were, too, which just made it even more frustrating!
I wonder why Barrett fell off so dramatically with his bat this year. He stunk it up with the Padres, too. I hear the Rockies are interested in him, so maybe that'll help pick his numbers up again.

DSU winning would make UD look like an incredible bunch of assholes. For one thing, they'd HAVE to schedule them now, or else pretty much confirm that the people alloting the money for the program, and the boosters, are incredibly racist. And UD would gain no benefit from playing DSU each year, especially if they start losing to them.
I go to UD, and even I actually kind of hope DSU pulls it out...it'd be too funny to watch UD try and spin there way out of the fact that they've purposely avoided that school for so many years.
All that said, UD, on paper, should kill them.

Plus they dont have checkers in the midwest they are called Rally's but they have the best burgers/chicken samiches in the fast food game

I guess there's no way to say for sure, but generally, there's really no comparison between the Colonial conference that UD plays in, and the MEAC which Del State plays in...the competition is far and away tougher in the Coloniel, and Delaware has all-around better recruiting classes.
That said, this is the biggest game in Del State's history, so I've got to believe they're going to be juiced for it, and this may be the best team they've ever had.
I'm kind curious what the crowd reaction will be...it's at Delaware, but the papers and radio have been treating UD as the heel in this matchup, big time, for obvious reasons. I could see a 50/50 split in the crowd.

they ran a huge piece about it. Maybe you can find something on ESPN.com if it's still there, about how it is racist. And the article was written by someone who graduated from UD, i think.

i never had xbox, always a sony person.
anyway, here is that story (http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/story?page=pearlman/070920&sportCat=ncf)
30+ years DSU has been trying to play them.
"Indeed there is. Unlike the wealthy, white-as-snow University of Delaware (African-American enrollment: 6 percent), Delaware State is a small black college lacking in prestige, finances and facilities (its stadium holds 6,800 spectators; Delaware's holds 22,000). The school came to be in 1891 only because the men running the First State wished not to allow blacks into their grand university. Under the Morrill Act, a state either could open its public educational facilities to all peoples, or start a separate-but-equal school for blacks. Hence, Delaware State."

yeah, i read that article (i think k.c. posted it earlier in the thread) but it's just one guy's opinion that the decision is racist, based on nothing but the fact that they don't want to play the other school. they don't want to play a school that is black so obviously there's no other possible explanation than they're racist. and the fact that the state made a racially motivated decision 116 years ago is kind of irrelevant.

I still go there now...I'll be honest, it's partially about race, but not entirely.
Delaware State was built legitimately under the 'seperate but equal' clause back in the segregation days, so it's always been considered the black school (which it pretty much always has been, I think it's over 90% black).
The point Snoogans made about the boosters, alumni, rich old men in power at UD is correct. They've more or less written it off as 'it's a black school.'
It has nothing really to do with DSU being a small school...Delaware's played West Chester (and destroyed them) pretty much every year since around 1991 (coincendtally, West Chester is UD's former president who just retired, David Roselle's alma-mater).
Now the other side of it is that Delaware doesn't have a whole lot to gain financially from playing Del. State. They already sell out all their games, and get televised regularly. In fact, if Del. State beats them a couple times, it could actually hurt Delaware's recruiting in the region.
The only benefit would be a fun game each year for the fans if both schools are competitive. Now, that's all that should matter, is if the students are into it, but college football has never been about it.
I hope it becomes a regular rivalry. It'd be fun.

Yeah, the guy who wrote the article went a bit overboard, to get people to pay attention, and it worked.
Don't get me wrong, though...he's right about a lot of stuff. I think race is a component of it, and there's absolutely no way for Delaware to justify playing West Chester every year for their
annual slaughter, when Del State would be a much better fit.
But if you treat college football as a business, it's not in UD's best business interests to play them. They really don't have a lot to gain other than an easy victory most years (Del State's been horrible up until the last couple years), which they already get with West Chester without running the risk of being embarassed if they somehow lost to WCU.

the main part of the racist angle is, thats now. Today it may not make much sense for UD to play them. But they have been asking for over 30 years. Even if now they just dont break away from how it was, for a long time it prob was MOSTLY based on racism.

It definitely was, and it definitely today is still somewhat racism.
Here's the bottom line on the situation, though:
-If UD/DSU played each other in an annual game, it'd be a phenominal game for the students and fans when both teams are competitive.
-UD doesn't really have anything to gain from it, other than giving their students a great rivalry. Now, you'd think that would be reason enough, and under the circumstances, I think most schools would do it. But they don't...partially because I think there's a lot of racism involved, and partially out of the fear that a few DSU victories, and suddenly UD's local recruiting operations takes a hit.
If UD trounces DSU on Friday, it's not a big deal. If DSU beats UD, it's one of the worst losses in UD's history for a number of reasons, even though DSU is actually a pretty good team, and it's totally conceivably they'd win the game.

yea but you cant keep saying UD has no real incentive. What good would Michigan have got beating App St., What help is it to alotta schools to play 3 or 4 games they play. Every college plays games that will not benefit them if they win and can only do harm if they lose. UD is just a bunch of racist pussies
