I thought was this fake. After a little more research.... I believe this is real and unbelievable.
About 20 years ago a teenager in Indonesia cut his leg on a tree.
He became infected and began to grow warts. Which in turn, grew roots.

I found a video on Youtube.
<object width="425" height="355"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/OSiW5rBPgc4&rel=1"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/OSiW5rBPgc4&rel=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="355"></embed></object>
If this guy went untreated, he'd probably end up looking like one of Davey Jones' crew from Pirates Of The Caribbean. Or Treebeard.
Now, if it has happened before... it could have occurred long ago and might be behind some myth of forest creatures. Imagine if a whole tribe was like that?!
I don't know... it's still hard to believe even when seeing.
Tree man 'who grew roots' may be cured (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml%3Bjsessionid%3DMLYGYKBGOGQ2DQFIQMFSFGGA VCBQ0IV0?xml=/news/2007/11/12/wtree112.xml)

Tree Man! Meet your nemesis, Coral Man!
New tree man: coral man has 'shells' cut from his body (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/newstopics/howaboutthat/6214323/New-tree-man-coral-man-has-shells-cut-from-his-body.html)
http://i.telegraph.co.uk/telegraph/multimedia/archive/01485/c1_1485846c.jpg
Horrified Lin became a hermit, hiding at the family home and shunned by friends and neighbours who dubbed him Coral Boy.
His experience closely resembles that of Dede Koswara, the "tree man" of Indonesia whose skin condition was first highlighted by Telegraph.co.uk.
"Gradually my shell became thicker and thicker and I could no longer bend my arms or my legs. It was very frightening," Lin said.
"If I had to go out I wrapped myself up in blankets because people would scream when they saw me," he added.
