My son left a Santa list on the table and I noticed the one "big" item that he asked for is a DS system. He's 7, I'm 37my last experience with a gaming system was when my old man bought me a colecovision in the late 80's. Anything major I need to know? I'm not worried about his age because he takes care of his stuff and is pretty good with our computer. He's interested in a few Pokemon games, something with spongebob, and a drawing game. Thanks for any assistance in advance.

You will need to get him New Super Mario Brothers...make sure you get the insurance, no matter how careful your kid is once dropped on the ground it is easily broken in half.

It's fun.

The difference from previous handheld systems is that it has a dual screen, and the bottom screen is a touch screen that you can use a stylus on.

Get the DS Lite rather than the DS. I think it's a $10 difference, but the DS Lite is so much better. It's smaller, better button placement, more comfortable stylus, and most importantly, a brighter and sharper screen.

It'll run you about $129 unless you get one of those ones already packages with a game.

Games I like:
Elite Beat Agents
New Super Mario Bros.
Mario Kart DS
Clubhouse Games
Wario Ware Touched

Mikey is right. The DS lite is much better. We already have (and broke) a DS.

Pokemon Diamond/ Pearl
Nintendogs
Touched

Are excellent games, I've also played, but have not picked up yet, The new Zelda for DS. Stylus traveling is cool.

Thanks for all the input. I'm thinking about picking one up within a week or so. I'm planning on shopping around but I usually end up at Best Buy.

This is the new DS bundle, but it comes with Brain Age 2, which might be a little hard for a 7 year old. But maybe you can get one for yourself and keep the game. I haven't played many video games either since the 90s and my BF got me this thing, now i'm hooked!

Picked up a black ds lite @ TRU last night. Got the insurance and the starter kit carrying case. Saw the crimson brain age bundle at best buy, but it worked out better for me at TRU. I got the insurance plan and Pokemon diamond.

Now I have to hide it for a month and make sure I don't "test" it.
