I have always bought renter's insurance through the rental agency, a friend of mine told me that he doesn't do it, the insurance company covers it. Do you take the agency's policy? Am I a rube for buying it? Last time I paid like 450 for a week in addition to the rental price (150). Im going to CT on vacation next week, and want to know if I can tell them to go screw.

If you use American Express to rent the car, AMEX wil automatically insure it.

There should be a line item in your car insurance policy that tells you if you have coverage on rental cars or not. NEVER trust the mouth-breather behind the counter.:nono:

Definitely check your policy, and don't let yourself be underinsured. I travel all the time, and I use my Visa for car rentals, and my card covers some portions of the insurance, but not all. In my case it covers liability, but not physical damage to the car so I have to take SOME of the insurance.

Call your credit card company.

I'm with Nev here. Also make sure you book, in advance, with the card as well as present it when picking up the car.

The rental agencies aren't really even allowed to call what they offer insurance anyway (because it isn't). They're supposed to call it a PDW _physical damage waiver, or something. It's usually the agent that uses the term "insurance".

Long story short: No Insurance in rental cars or Blackjack.

I'm double-covered with both my credit card and my policy.

When I was in Hawaii, I wanted to rent a car for one day. The person behind the counter wanted to give me insurance, and when I told her no, she flipped out and started telling me all the things that could go wrong.

BTW, the insurance premium was almost the SAME PRICE AS THE CAR RENTAL.

I am in a situation like this too. In Dec we are flying south (only to Winnipeg, not "real" south  ) and will have to rent a car. One of my clients told me to check with the company that I have my car insurance with here. Apparently if you let them know the dates you will have the rental car they will cover you for about half the cost of the rental place's insurance cost. Good to know.

Yeah, what everyone said. Your insurance should cover it, check with them. Possibly credit card too.

Do you buy the prepaid gas, too?

If you have tripple A too they might have some rental coverage.
good question on the gas, I went to DC and didnt buy it cause I didnt believe the woman that it was cheaper. I would say check the prices in the area your going to, theres a sight for it but I forget what its called.

I never get it. It's a ripoff

Your insurance will cover you. The rental insurance just has a lower deductible
