Didn't see a thread up for the new season.
The Celtics kicked the Bullets ass tonight, KG got 20 boards and 22 points. They played really well.
Looks like Kobe is staying in LA for now.

Celtics looked fantastic in their opener. They are going to be a force in the East. Bron Bron torched the Knicks for 40 something tonight, because he's LeBron and they're the Knicks. I'm personally shocked Kobe is still in L.A. and even more shocked they routed the Suns tonight. This Kobe shit needs to end, either he has to get moved in the next day or two or the Lakers have to issue a statement saying he's staying in L.A. for the rest of the year.

i don't know if the celtics were as dominant as it might have seemed. other than a 16-2 run in the 2nd quarter the rest of the game was fairly even (but i guess that could be due to them already having a big lead and coasting).

agreed
But the game is 48 minutes long, the Knicks play a kick ass 36 , then the 4th Quarter is a letdown,...
Don't forget Jamal Crawford went down with an injury, he can carry the Knicks Singlehandedly on Some Nights
I say 40-45 wins
it does hurt being a Knicks fan, after such a good run in the 1990s

i actually dont have an NBA team, i just watch whoever i draft in fantasy.......i also try to closely follow Kobe and LeBron because whenever they play something truly special could happen ala Kobe's 81 or LeBron's insane 4th quarter last year in the playoffs.
and this year i have Starbury on my bench, so if i insert him for a week i'll be catching Knicks games as well.

did u hear Pierce in the post-game? He sounded exactly like Belichick. He was like, 'obviously we turned the ball over too much and we allowed them to shoot to high a percentage. these are things we need to work on, we're not where we want to be yet.'

yea, the West will be the true test. they need to see how they handle teams like the Spurs and Suns. The Lakers want no part of beating the Rockets tonight even though T-Mac left the game and went to the hospital. He screwed my entire fantasy week.
I'm gonna warn Celtics fans that these "All-Star" groupings don't always work in the postseason. The 2003-4 Lakers did start 18-3 & everybody on the planet wanted to give them the title.
That was until they played the Pistons.

The team looks fantastic, but its still the Celtics and they're being coached by Doc Rivers, so I will not jump on the "82-0" bandwagon. But if they can keep rolling through great teams, I'll actually raise my hopes for the playoffs.

that group barely played together the entire year except for the beginning of the season when they were on a tear. Shaq was hurt part of the year, Malone was hurt part of the year, Kobe was hurt part of the year, Payton was the only one that played the whole time. If they played a full year together and got to gel, they would have murdered the Pistons. they just didn't play together long enough and the Pistons were a much better defensive, cohesive unit.

Agreed. And, like I said before, that bench is hardly deep enough to go all the way.
"Scott Wedman is not walking through that door, fans. Jerry Sichting is not walking through that door, and Greg Kite is not walking through that door. And if you expect them to walk through that door, they're going to be gray and old."

The Magic are very good, I didn't realize it until a few days ago and then they finally stepped up to the beast in the east and sent a clear message they arent gonna roll over for Boston. The Knicks and the Heat are both awful. My surprise so far this year has been the Lakers. I'm shocked theyre playing as well as they are. They shipped out Brian Cook today who I enjoy watching, but im sure there was a reason for it. Its been an interesting season so far.

Detroit's bench is quite impressive. I would think that over the course of a 7 gamer...Detroit would just wear them out.
I would have never said this a year ago, but losing Ben Wallace might have been the best thing to happen to the Pistons.

Ben Wallace turned out to be amazingly overrated. I think the only place I read that when he signed with Chicago was from Bill Simmons. Everyone else thought he was this amazing player.

I heard it a few places, but generally it wasn't viewed as the best move. Although for Detroit it gave them the cap room & flexibility to completely rework that bench.
And this is the second time today I get to say that Bill Simmons is a great writer!

Well Lakers get Pau Gasol for Kwame Brown and Javaris Crittenton and Mckie (who is kind of retired) some draft picks are thrown in too.
I think this is a huge step for the Lakers, now they will have Farmar, Kobe, Odom, Gasol and Bynum(when he returns) as their starters. Bynum was developing nicely and now with Gasol to take off some pressure of being the big man in the middle he can develop even more. This could be a team that could definitely run for the title.

I just can't see Shaq helping any team with his 20 million dollar a year contract. To get rid of Shaq makes a ton of sense for the Heat and if they can get Shawn Marion for him then its a move that really pays for itself. I don't see this being a great move for the Suns but if they wanna gamble on the self-proclaimed M.D.E. then good luck.

Big Baby is going to be awesome. Every time they put him in he's solid. He just needs to learn how to control his body so he doesn't commit as many fouls.
Scal is awful on offense. He puts up three's like Walker used to, but he is decent on D and does get the crowd going if he does make a basket.

As a life-long and long suffering Celtics fan, my Vegas bet on the Cetlics over the summer (at 75-1 odds I remind you) looks pretty good and i couldn't be happier.
Big Baby was a projected top 10 draft pick after his sophomore year at LSU. When he was obtained in the trade for Ray Allen, I was estatic. He will have a very solid NBA career.
For those that argued that the Celtics early start was overblown because they have not beaten anyone to date.... look at the recent wins:
Detroit (in Detroit)
Denver
Los Angeles
Cleveland
Toronto
Orlando
Houston
Portland
Dallas
I think they have proven that they are amongst the NBA elite now. Without Garnett, they stepped up and have played inspired basketball (even though some of the games have lacked the defensive intensity needed, the Spurs game had all that and then some).
I will bet that the rematch in San Antonio will result in him getting a lot of fouls called on Davis. The refs let the game become physical which is Davis' strength.
the stretch after the all-star break will be tough (with Portland, Phoenix Denver and GS)
After that the week of March 17-22 will pose some tough competition (Texas three step and New Orleans).

Rondo is defiantly going to be good, his confidence is really growing this year. He's pretty good on defense, but needs to look out for the picks, he's gotten blasted a few times. And he can really take it to the hoop and dish to the open man, he just needs to get his jump shot down. He was shooting well a couple games ago, then verse San Antonio he couldn't hit anything, but he had some other stuff going for him like assists and rebounds.
You're right but I loved watching Rondo play this year. He makes some great fakes and passes. The other night he got up and ripped down a one-handed rebound over some big guy!
He's only going to get better.

Scalabrine is a total dick. My brother worked in basketball operations for the Nets and they sent an intern out for food prior to a team flight, well the entire team shorted this kid money and he ended up spending over $75 of his own money and none of the players thanked him and Scalabrine actually told the kid to keep the change and never even paid for the food that he got him

Ugh, all star games are horrible.
Now for something that matters. Ive figured out how to revive the Knicks. First off somehow you need to off both Curry and Randolph. Maybe plant some heroin on them . . . or in them, I dunno. Then you'll have to try to ship Stephon Marbury back to Africa. Maybe he can take Earl with him. Then lastly Dolan and Thomas should be hung in Central Park.
Then maybe, just maybe the team can succeed.

Is anyone watching the Dunk Contest.
My god, Dwight Howard is a beast. He is making it look like he is in his room on a Nerf Hoop. If you missed this, check out the replays or look them up on YouTube, freaking amazing. 3 straight perfect scores, with one dunk left.
That was the best performance I've ever seen. He was just dominating. Green should have saved his birthday wish for the final round.

Two years in a row, he's asked for the ability to raise the hoop to 11 feet, but they won't let him. I hope next year they do.

14 of their last 18 games...Ok, so I know that nobody in Philadelphia, or NBA fans in general, actually pay attention to this team any more, but they're playing some damn good basketball right now. Just beat the Spurs last night to get within one game of .500 (this after being 12 games under on two different occasions this season).
They've got a legit path to getting as high as the 5th seed.
They're not world-beaters, and at best, they may pull a 1st round upset, but this is the first time I've felt optimistic about them as since the '00-'01

More game used jerseys mean more youths buying them. Like the Celtics really needed these St. Pats jerseys, as if they weren't green enough.

Yeah, a blog I read talked about it (http://www.uniwatchblog.com/2008/03/10/los-gringos-masivos/) like a week ago. And they raise a great point that the NBA isn't even trying. Its just adding Los in front of the names, instead of actually doing the whole thing in Spanish.

I really wanted to see this game, but ESPN has the Cavs Pistons AGAIN. WE GET IT, they played in the Conference finals.
Anyway, i think Iverson isnt what he was. How can he be? That being said I still think not what he was Iverson is easily a top level player. I really think Carmelo is over rated though. Quietest 25 points a game I ever saw. And I'm sure alot of that is the added help from Iverson over last year when he would just shoot 33 times to score 28 points.
Iverson used to do that too, but he had to, and he also BUSTED HIS ASS doin everything else. Its a shame he was such a douche bag, and played in Philly, or he woulda been on of my favorites of all time
What was the AI reception?
50 second standing ovation....AI actually got a ton of respect during the game, too...got some applause for the great plays he made, and you could just feel people holding their breath every time he touched the ball.
The Sixers fans, and by that I mean the people who go down to the stadium loved AI, so I wasn't too surprised by it.
The people who hated him were your angry talk radio callers who generally don't show up at the games. They'll be crowing about the win and how Andre Miller is a better suited to 'winning' basketball.
Nevermind the fact that this win streak and with how hot this team has been...they just got back to .500 tonight....they are on the upswing though and this team will be poised to force a 1st round playoff upset.
Great game, though.

Exactly...I don't think people were really paying attention to how that team was constructed. Iverson's #2 guy on any given night would be McKie or Ratliff/Mutumbo.
Not exactly the most dynamic complements on offense, although McKie had a couple good years.
And when Larry Brown is throwing out guys like George Lynch and Tyrone Hill in starting roles...you're asking Iverson to shoot 40 times a game.

ah....I can't go that far...yeah, he's horrible with young players. It was completely evident in Philadelphia, too.
But at the same time, he got more out of some of those Philly teams from earlier this decade then he ever deserved to.
That NBA Finals team was AI and a bunch of smoke & mirrors...I still can't figure out how the hell that team started 41-14, let alone made it to the finals.
AI just finished up his presser...good watch...he was pretty gracious about everything and went out of his way to say he regretted a lot of what he did in the past and put a lot of things in perspective.
My guess is the Philly papers will be filled with 'A more mature AI' or 'What a long way he's come' tomorrow.

He's not wearing them out. I believe all but Allen had lower min averages this year than last. I thought he did good by letting the bench work out their problems and get the lead back up, before he brought in the 3.

Six out of 10 picked the Mavs (http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/playoffs2008/series?series=dalnor)

HUGE game for detroit tonight, the 76'ers can approach this game like a game 7, if they win they "practically" have the series locked up. detroit can't afford to lose tonight.
i sort of expected the celtics to lose a game in the series, but i didnt think they would play as poorly as they did last night, atlanta was hot no doubt and played a great game, they were unstoppable from 3 point range. i will be shocked (and concerned) if the celtics dont win by 20+ next game.
if i were a betting man i would have bet phoenix was all done today, so of course they come out and dominate the spurs lol. this series is over on tuesday tho imo.
i really wanted to see the cavs vs wizards go 2-2 just for the drama. that was a good game, i hope the celtics dont have to play the cavs. i am looking forward to a celtics vs. detroit series tho, but will enjoy the sixers upsetting detroit all the same.

And who knows what McDyess's status will be.
yeah, just saw that he has a broken nose and is questionable.
This is either going to be a Pistons blow out, or a game where the Sixers keep it within striking distance for three and a half quarters, and out run Detroit at the end to eek out a victory.
There's no chance of a repeat of last game...the Pistons HAVE to be better than that.
This is such a tough game to get a grasp on tonight, which should make it fun. Detroit has been exposed a little bit in this series. They're not anywhere close to as athletic as the Sixers and just can't run with them when they stretch the floor.
And it doesn't help their cause that this Sixers team plays pretty damn good defense...and they don't settle for a lot of long jumpers and threes...this series really isn't a good matchup for Detroit.
If the Sixers are going to win the series, they have to win tonight. If Detroit gets it back even, I think we could start to see the Sixers make some inexperienced mistakes in future games as the pressure starts to build on them a little.
And Detroit thrives off of forcing those mistakes.
Jesus, the Pistons look old.
It'd be kind of fitting if this is where their last hurrah takes place.
If I remember correctly, this Pistons group started it's run beating an aging, banged up Sixers team in '03, that pretty much knocked them out for a while.
Six years later, a young, upstart Sixers team returns the favor.
Man, Joe Dumars must have told the whole team, at half time, he was shipping them to the glue factory if they lose this game.

DALLAS (AP)—The Dallas Mavericks have fired coach Avery Johnson.
The move was the first of what’s likely to be many in the offseason. The league’s highest payroll produced a second straight first-round knockout from the playoffs.
Johnson leaves Wednesday with an impressive resume after three-plus seasons, but Mavs owner Mark Cuban couldn’t tolerate a bottom line of being 3-12 in the playoffs since blowing a 2-0 lead in the 2006 NBA finals.

now the way the defense responded after he got past ray was pathetic too but they still needed to bring someone in or double team him quicker, and thats on doc.
pierce was pissed off at ray several times for his defense in the last two games, he barked at him when ray let a guy go in uncontested late in the game.
sam cassell has been playing like a rookie, so much for bringing in the old verteran for the playoffs lol, nice shot selection sammy.

we are going to learn friday night whether or not this team is a potential champion imo, they need to go down there and close this thing out convincingly, they are a MUCH better team than the hawks and if they cant control the hawks 3 decent weapons and take that game over then i am worried.
they hadnt played a game that meant anything in a month, then they rolled in the first two at home, and then got complacent and got a big surprise on the road, ok that was your lesson, no more excuses. their defense was off the hook tonight, and it absolutely better be the same way friday.
they STILL arent making guys pay for layups which i really cant figure out, every player on the celtics has been sent hard to the floor, shit they broke perk's nose! i dont mean the celtics should start flagrant fouling, just make them hurt a little and earn their points at the line. oh and pierce got NO calls tonight.

Some observations from the Celtics game so far :
1) Cassell actually makes this team worse. Whenever he's in the game and Rondo isn't, I get scared.
2) The Sports Guy has been saying it all year, but I didn't believe it until now : Garnett SUCKS in crunch time. He's afraid to take shots and makes awful decisions.
3) Doc Rivers is the reason this team might not with it all. He stinks.
Like a dagger in the fucking heart, that three was!
This is going back to Boston. Let's go Hawks! Pull the upset of all upsets and send these overrated douchebags home for good.

it is inconcievable that this team can play like they have at home in this series and then play like this on the road, very worrisome.
what they have done on the road in this series is the definition of choking, as much as i hate to say it.
no disrespect to atlanta, they have played great at home. but i cant imagine anyone trying to argue that atlanta is equal to the celtics talent.
atlanta deserved to make that prayer 3 pointer because the celtics should have had them put away by now, with a chance to close out a series detroit stepped up, cleveland stepped up, and boston couldnt get it done.

Considering Mike Tirico was on ESPN radio a few weeks back calling them maybe the best team ever (which is completely ridiculous), yes, it would be a joke and a letdown.
I hate the hype around this team. It's a good team, and one of the best in the NBA this season (unless they lose to the Hawks, then all that goes out the window).
But come on...is ESPN so far up Boston's ass that they're now exalting this Celtics team as one of the best EVER????????

orlando hung with detroit for a while, end was ugly tho.
i can see something happening to the celtics like what happened to montreal, go 7 games with a team you should have beat in 4 or 5 and then come out flat for the next series and get spanked.
i hope not, and they still have to manage to win game 7, atlanta is going to let it all hang out, they made their runs in the 2nd and 4th quarter when the celtics looked tired and disjointed on defense, hawks gameplan should be to run them ragged and let the chips fall where they may imo.
if they can make their shots like they did at home they could certainly win.

True, but go back and watch the game. He hit the guy in the nuts but they had been goin at each other the whole game. Eventually after a hard foul, if i remember right, paul gave him a nice backhand to the nuts.
ENOUGH NCAA TALK. My hornets are up 2-0 and goin to San Antonion. All I'm hoping is a split in these 2 games in SA. We can come back to NO up 3-1 with 2 home games left, I think we are in amazing shape

and again id like to reiterate how INSANE it is that Chris Paul is not gonna get the MVP. The votes got it right when they have Byron Scott, Jason Kidd's arch nemesis, COTY. But then you go and fuck CP3? BULLSHIT
And dont sleep on David West. Born and raised in TEANECK, NJ. Peja been on fire, and big minutes off the bench from Wright. Great energy. I ALMOST FORGOT MY MAN MO PETE

peja was clutch down the stretch, the whole team was very composed and really seemed to have the spurs rattled.
and yes, paul hitting that guy in the goodies was one of the biggest pussy moves in sports, i dont care what happened prior. but i will give most anyone a second or third chance. (and im pretty consistent with that unless its murder etc)
