I never get to watch the games and only get to listen on XM.

I guess I am just a homer but I love the Red Sox announcers and usually can't stand the road feeds that are on. God forbid I have to listen to a game in NY because then I am subjected to their horrible combo of Waldman/Sterling.

Kevin Millar and Jason Varitek had a bet on who would win the NBA Championship. The loser had to walk out to Vanilla Ice's Ice Ice Baby.

Millar lost :

Well, again...that guy (castiglione?) is a legend, especially after the 2004 series.
But I dont listen enough to know how it feels to listen to them every day.

I guess I just like the low key kind of announcers. They need to learn that a little bit of silence every now and then is a good thing. Castiglione and whoever they have him paired with on a given night sometimes seem to be talking just for the sake of hearing themselves talk.

Just saw on ESPN that Curt Schilling tells WEEI that he will have season-ending surgery on Monday.

Schilling: "My season is over and there is a pretty decent chance I have thrown my last pitch forever."

Well, then I hope the Boston broadcast team is better than the awful Reds' and paints that picture for me. I wish XM would just give the option of either broadcast team. I'm sure it's a legal or bandwidth issue or some shit like that, but really, no one can touch Mike Shannon on the radio side.

just to clear up why Tek is an allstar. During the players vote, the Leading vote getter at C was Mauer. But because the fans had already voted Mauer to start, they go to the player with the second most player votes, who happened to be Varitek. OK, now... How fitting is it that, after all that ridiculous booing, a red Sox player is the MVP???? HA!

They just couldnt wrap their minds around the fact that they were booing their own team.
As a New Yorker, I was kinda embarrassed at the booing. Made it look like NY'ers were the "dont get the bit" guys.

Anywho... what a great night. What a great game. A fitting farewell to the stadium; just another storied event in it's great history. I really wanted to see what would happen with the bullpen and benches depleted in the 16th, but I guess I'll have to wait til next year.

Another SOLID performance by the young lefty.

How bout Pap in the eighth? Bases loaded, only 1 out.
He comes in and 2 pitches later, Inning Ovah!!!

And Youk's DEFENSIVE slide into 1st base to get an out!

And Tek's 2 runner!

This was a great game, and soooo needed. I listened up to the 6th on XM,
then rushed home to catch the 8th and 9th on cable.

great game last night, could have used a little more offense but a good pitcher's duel is fun to watch too.

globe, herald, WEEI, all calling for manny to be run out of town this morning. i would have to say this is the loudest and widest cry for his head that there has been so far. supposedly the front office this time and terry francona are fed up as well, and again reportedly there is more grumbling among teammates than ever before.

i did notice that tito didnt say anything to defend manny about this one, when he usually goes out of his way to do so.

i doubt it will happen, and dont really care one way or the other. he is what he is, as they say...

i wouldnt want to be in a burning building with him, but he just plays left field for a baseball team that i root for. i can accept his shenanigans and usually find them entertaining, i dont really get that worked up about him taking days off, he has done it pretty consistently over the years, its a bitch move but manny has been part bitch since cleveland, i find it much more troubling when he is taking a swing at teammates or shoving down an office worker.

Oh, you could see it in Beckett's eyes he wanted back on the mound just for that purpose.
It was sooo obviously done on purpose; the (yankee) announcers said otherwise, that it was around 100 pitches and he was losing control; great story if the Hutt wouldve followed thru, but what does he do? Consistently paints the strike zone with his next several pitches.
Youk was going crazy in the dugout pointing out the same thing with each pitch.
These are the rare occasions when I hate the DH rule.

Maybe a few errant knuckleballs tonight?

Last night was the one that was our sure win. What happened to Joba?

Yea, it was nothing against the sox or anything.

Chris has stated it many times that all the time Lester pitches the mention it, and it bugs him too.

It was against the dumb media. It just gets old.

I only speak for myself, but Lester has worked out great for us,
and he's a great fit with the team... something we've been incredibly lucky with all around.
We get a star who's too big for the room, and it's locker room lymphoma.

(as we saw with Nomar, and are seeing with Manuel).

Both Santana and Lester have 8 wins, with similar eras. I'm happy.

I was sort of ambivalent when the deal was on the table, I knew Santana was a stud but giving up so much would have hurt. Considering how things are going now, I'm more than happy.

I'll also refresh everyone's memory with a deal that was close a few years ago Manny and Lester for Arod. How does everyone feel about that one now.

I guess I am spoiled, but I really preferred last years start to finish first place team to the struggle that this year has been.

Manny is deservedly getting all kinds of heat, but keeps making us cheer for him no matter what. I so badly want to hate him for all the crap he has pulled this year but I just can't. Is it just me or does it seem like the only people upset by all his antics are the broadcasters though ? I did'nt hear too many boo's coming from the hometown fans the last few nights or was that just good sound engineering ?

I'm in total agreement. One minute, I'm saying screw him, I hope he goes to the Mets,
and the next, he's proving to everyone why he's been so valuable to this team, and still is.

There is, of course, no way he's going anywhere before season's end,
but I hope he's back next year. Manny being Manny is not just about Manny anymore;
it's a Sox thing--he WAS one of those Idiots in '04!

As to your first point, I waited 38 years to see them win a World Series...
I can wait a full season! Theyll be right where they belong come October; battling the yankees for the title, then on to another Championship. A long, hard fought victory is always more fun to celebrate than a pass.

Manny Ramirez's stormy relationship with the Boston Red Sox appears to be over.

A baseball source has confirmed Ramirez has been traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers, ESPN.com has learned.

Jason Bay is going to Boston as part of the deal, Jayson Stark reported. And the Pittsburgh Pirates get four minor leaguers as part of the three-way deal.

Andy LaRoche, Bryan Morris, Brandon Moss and Craig Hansen will go to Pittsburgh, ESPN.com has learned.

I've got an awful feeling in the pit of stomach about this. Bay better step up, or we'll have to come up with a new state nickname.

Just a thought here and it doesnt really matter anyways, but does anyone think the release of Manny's good friend Julian Tavarez had anything to do with the Manny Saga ?

I just keep racking my brain trying to comprehend why he acted so badly at the end. This is the same guy that was talking about ending his career in Boston with Ortiz and also this :

http://www.dejuiced.com/mlb/manny-ramirez-practices-the-secret

There really isn’t too much of an intro I could give this one. I’ll just let you know that Manny has a copy of The Secret and then let Manny take over from there.

“You’ve got to be a boat knowing where you’re going,” saith the sage of the Green Monster. “We’ve got money. We’re famous. But you’ve got to know what you want.”

There’s more.

“Hey, you’re the architect of your life,” he said. “Let me tell you something. We’ve got so much bad stuff inside, it’s up to us to make the best of it.”

I seriously think he’s just screwing with us. There is no Manny being Manny. He just decided one day that if he acted eccentric, he wouldn’t have to actually answer questions from the media for the rest of his life. Also, he could get away with not fielding, ever.

Where did this all go wrong ?

ChrisTheCop
07-31-2008, 06:05 PM
Well, thats a good point Joey. Perhaps Tavares does factor into it, but not necessarily because Manny was upset at his release.

I thought the fact that Julian wasnt there to be Manny's mouthpiece had a huge impact on Manny's behavior. He had made the decision at the beginning of the season that he was gonna talk to the press more, instead of letting Tavares do it for him. But once things started going wrong, Julian would probably have stepped in, smoothed it out, and kept Manny from the press so that he wouldnt have made all these anti-club statements. But Julian wasnt there. And now, neither is manny.

I think it is more likely that Manny's new agent Scott Boras had something to do with it. Manny switched to him last off season and with Manny under contract to the Red Sox until after the 2010 season (if the Sox exercised their options), Boras stood to make ZERO money from Manny.

I bet he told Manny that the Sox didn't love him any more and that $20 million per wasn't enough and that if Manny was a free agent after the season they could get more money and years.

But even then he counters that with his bitchin' catch off the wall (against the Orioles), high-fiving the fan and then doubling off the baserunner.
