My wife is sitting atop the Green Monster for this game with her sisters while I am at home watching the kids.
That is sooooo wrong.
But at least me and my son got our pictures taken with the 04 & 07 World Series trophies when they came to my town this week.

No shit. But I'm going to take my nephew from New Orleans to Fenway next month while he's in town. Got the tickets early in the year not realizing that Tampa Bay would be a meaningful series. So I'm pretty happy about that.

I hope Fez is using a similar tactic..
AJ should ban you if you did, you son of a bitch.
Oh it would have been justfied, believe me.
I watched the game from the start and I didn't even realize he had the no-no going until the 6th.
That was a great catch by Ellsbury too.
That father-son moment between Lester and Francona pulled at my heart strings.
Indeed. I think I had something in my eye at that moment.
And I liked how John Henry and Tom Werner came down from the owner's box to watch the 9th from the box seats so they could be there to congratulate him.
Like others have said -- good for this kid.
I have to give credit to The Captain as well. He's in some pretty impresive company:
Jason Varitek caught his Major League-leading fourth no-hitter on Monday. The Red Sox catcher was also behind the dish for no-no's tossed by Hideo Nomo (April 4, 2001), Derek Lowe (April 27, 2002) and Clay Buchholz (Sept. 1, 2007).

There is really no data to prove that he's better at handling pitchers then other catchers.
If you want to go by rings, then you'd have to say Jorge Posada is the best then, or if you want to go with team ERA you'd have to say a guy like Javy Lopez
There is just no good way to determine a catchers value to a pitching staff. And please don't give me CERA, its a completely irrelevant stat unless you consider Damian Miller, Ramon Hernandez and Mike Piazza the three best catchers since 1990

Javy Lopez was a catcher six times when a pitcher on his staff won a Cy Young, I'm sure they all had nice things to say about him.
See what I mean? No good data to prove whether or not a catcher has much of an effect on a staff.
Find me anything that proves Varitek is the best catcher in this generation to handle a staff. You can't. Because there isn't any.
Opinions mean nothing when the results aren't there, since 2000 the Sox have been 13th in overall team ERA. Not really staggering.

That's the thing with him. He never has two good years in a row. one bad one great. But he is always money in the postseason. The question is do they have enough to survive a bad beckett year and get him there. Depends on Dice K and the youngens.

Sometimes the best trades. . . (http://www.boston.com/sports/touching_all_the_bases/2008/05/sometimes_the_best_trades.html)
And now? Now I thank the heavens that Theo Epstein resisted paying Minnesota the bounty it wanted. Consider what the Red Sox were reported to be giving up in their initial offer for Santana: Jacoby Ellsbury, a Rookie of the Year frontrunner who possesses the talent and charisma to be a franchise icon; No-hit kid Jon Lester, who delivered the feel-good moment of the season so far and who looks like the budding the 15-game winner pitching coach John Farrell swears he can be; Justin Masterson, who has allowed two earned runs in 12.1 major league innings and who almost certainly will play a significant role in the bullpen in the season's second half; and Jed Lowrie, who hit .310 in 42 at-bats in sort of a superutility role while Mike Lowell and Alex Cora were injured early in the season.
Given the good-to-great things we've already seen from these kids - and given what we suspect is happening to Santana, who seems to be morphing into Ron Guidry circa 1980 (http://www.baseball-reference.com/g/guidrro01.shtml) - I think we can safely file this one under Sometimes The Best Trades Are The Ones You Don't Make, at least for now.
Still way too early to judge these proposed deals, but I think its fair to wonder whether or not either team would have been better if they made the deal. I thought the Yanks would be worse off in the long run, by a lot. I think the BoSox would have been as well.

Dice-K undergoing examination for shoulder fatigue (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=3416216)
Could just be a dead arm thing. But it also could be serious, either now or pretty soon. Luis Vizcaino had the same thing last August (another Torre special) and then he was awful last September and has landed on the DL with the same injury already this year. When they signed Dice-K some people were worried about the # of innings he logged at such a young age.
Hopefully its just a dead arm thing.

Manny Ramirez Just Hit His 500th Career Homerun!!!!!!!!!!!!!
'Twas the top of the 7th at Camden Yards, with 2 out and no one on. The Red Sox were ahead by one run; the score, 4 to 3.
Chad Bradford was brought in especially to throw against Manny.
Only one of those 499 Home Runs came from Bradford's glove... tonight, Manny made it 2.
All night, Manny had been going after the first pitch, producing nothing.
But Manny did not change this strategy, the very first pitch out of Bradford's right hand connected with Manny's bat, and seemed to enjoy the ride as it sailed into the stands at right center field, into what appeared to be a party of BoSox fans.
Sadly, it happened one day after his 36th birthday (or as Manny called it, his Dominican 39th birthday), and not at Fenway Park. So there would be no celebration yet, save for the Red Sox Nationals in the stands, and a hug and pat on the head from Mike Lowell, and a few others as he came home. Mike Lowell caused the 3rd out of the inning, and it was almost immediatley back to work in left field for Mr Ramirez.... where Manny can just continue being Manny.

I have not called for the death of yankee fans, or their players.
For a yankee fan to come into a pro-Sox thread and say I'm a little extreme in my pride,
is tantamount to a muslim entering a catholic church and saying, "wow, theyre really into it a bit too much, arent they?"
Forgive me for enjoying our recent series wins.
And for pointing out, after years of being called losers who would never win and seeing the yanks take it from us by inches at times year after year, that we have won twice this century whilst the mighty yanks have won not once.

You have every right to be proud of your team Chris. If you ask me what franchise is the premiere franchise in baseball and maybe sports. I have to say the Sox. They spend alot, bit not obscene. They have a good mixture of great vets and great young talent. And a pretty good farm. That is a blue print for a team. My point is, let the winning do the talking. Its enough for us to see you winning. We do not need to be reminded. Your team, is kinda like the 96-00 Yankees. No one hated the team.they were filled with guys who played hard. They rooted against them because of the douchebag fans. Thats how your team is getting

I thought there was going to be a lot of people still talking shit, blaming the refs or whatever, instead of actually give the Giants the credit for kicking ass. And there was really very little of that.
But yeah, losing to Indy always hurts. They lost in 06 on the first day of my honeymoon. I watched it on a cruise ship with a bunch of Indy fans. I wanted to cry. That hurt for a while.

I think that also has alot to do with losing to a respected Franchise like the Giants. Like Fallon said, it would of been worse if you lost to a team like the Cowboys. Who everyone but their fans hate.

I was not the quintessential bad fan, aka douchebag, but because someone (a yankee fan) had a problem with a silly joke I made in a Red Sox thread , that was more about stupid superstitions than anti-yankee, and the ensuing no joke getting fellow red sox fan with a cartoon dog for a name, I've been branded an ass.

Cool t-shirt. I want one. And thanks for the sentiment.
Of course, I'm still pulling for Papi to come back in 3 weeks, but if he were to be out all season, I dont think it would be too big of a deal. Not this year.
He's finally hitting well, but he's not the Papi of old; he's just a good hitter.
We've won many games without him, and I'm sure we can continue doing so.
His presence would be greatly missed, there's just something about him, but we dont NEEEED him like we have in the past. That said however, I hope he does return soon.
On the injury front, Crisp sprained his left thumb on one of his many steal attempts last night. Jason Bartlett apparently put his whole knee in front of the bag, something Coco calls unsportsmanlike. Theyre calling it a mild sprain.
Meanwhile Daisuke is to start a throwing program this weekend, just basically play catch from 60-90 feet. They say he's on track for his June 12th return.
Oh--almost forgot-- Lester's on the mound. I predict the word cancer wont be said til the 6th inning, since it's on NESN.
Also--Yaaaaaa duuuuuude....and route. there.

When manny came out for the pinch runner he did appear to high-five youk in the dugout. I think you gotta believe Remy, McCarty and Francona that it doesn't mean much, it happens over the course of a season and this one just happened to be captured on video.
After Wednesday night, everybody knew Coco was going to get drilled. Jason Bartlett could have caused Coco another hand injury blocking the bag like he did so I can't say I blame Coco for sliding hard the second time around.

Lester getting 5 games means he misses one start, maybe. If there's an off day in there somewhere, he probably doesn't even miss it.
And Shields only hit Crisp, Crisp actually faked to first and then attacked (which is what he said in the press conference) so the catcher wouldn't stop him.
Also, it's the MLB, they'll probably all "win" their "appeal" and get at least one less game on their punishments.

From a source inside the red sox:
"It all happened because Manny complained about Youkilis' habit of throwing bats, helmets and other objects in the dugout when he has a bad at-bat, something that has become a constant practice," the source said.
"Other players have told Youkilis in the past about the situation, which makes him look selfish and that he is more worried about each at-bat than about the team. If Boston is winning easily, there's no reason to throw objects all over the dugout because of a bad at-bat.
"There was a meeting where the team let Youkilis know that many of his teammates were tired of his explosive reactions for each bad plate appearance. It became very bothersome … more so when the team is winning and it's in first place. There's not much room for individualistic attitudes."

That's what I was talking about. But this is also what makes Youkilis such a great hitter. He's just so OCD that if he has a bad at bat, he's basically biting the inside of his arm.

I dont think they have a problem with him getting pissed. Alot of guys do. But seriously, if you are 2-4 and fly out to center when you are up 8, and then throw around helmets and bats so I have to dodge them, I'd be pretty pissed off too. Its fuckin childish

I don't disagree with you, at all. But that's how Youk is and has always been. He probably needs to change. Or they need to give him a place to throw his shit when he fucks up.

Could someone on the Red Sox please work with Bartolo Colon on how to properly throw a ball from the mound to second base? Or, tell him NOT to do it?
Thank you.

And Youk has always said that O'Neill is one of his heroes because of his intensity. It's OK to be intense. It's NOT OK to come off as a whiny bitch in the dugout. Channel your anger into a play at first and/or your next at bat.

I had asked earlier about the older guy to the right, dark hair, usually wearing a suit jacket, but today shades, a white polo and members only jacket. And someone here (AJ i believe) was nice enuff to tell me he's either a current or former scout for the sox. He's at every game! I have plans on making friends with him if I ever spot him at a bar.

They should have him pitch in relief while he is hot.

Beckett is doing 1 of 2 things. What we hope, the first thing is he is pulling a Tim Duncan. So he will mail it in until Sept 1st, we will slide into the playoffs, and here comes beckett, nasty again.
Or its the Tim Thomas, which is he is just mailing it in. Period. And its all over

Beckett never has 2 good years in a row. Hell until last year, he never was that great to begin with. Never winning more than 12 13. But for some reason he does great in the postseason.

I am not sure who came up with the phras last year for Gagne, but Timlin has become this years human victory cigar.
He just looks out of gas so far this year. Luckily this is his last year on contract and at the end of the year he can ride off into the sunset as a Red Sox legend.
Unless he blows the season for them. Then he should be banished Bill Buckner style only to return 20 years later in a overly dramatic pregame ceremony.

Fenway food flunks health tests
Posted: Thursday June 12, 2008 05:21AM ET
Fenway Park's food stands flunked city health inspections on more than a dozen health and safety measurements on Red Sox opening day April 8, from storing food at unsafe temperatures to failing to clean food preparation counters. City inspectors discovered the violations, which were significant enough to pose a risk of food poisoning for patrons, even though they had found virtually the same set of problems in an examination more than a week earlier and demanded corrective action. The concession operator's response to the city's findings was so slow that the city threatened at a municipal court hearing to shut down Fenway Park's food stands if the problems were not fixed.
Savages.

What I witnessed from Red Sox fans at Citizens Bank Park last night really just kind of shows what a shithole Fenway is (don't get me wrong...the historical value of Fenway is great, and the bar scene is fantastic...it's not a great place to watch a game).
You'd have thought they'd never actually seen concession stands or anything outside of a dog and a Coors Light served at games.
There were seriously, like, lines for Bull's BBQ, and Tony Luke's, and Harry The K's, and the Schmitter place, that would have taken at least two innings to get to the counter.
And all up and down those lines, you'd see an Ortiz shirt, a Ramirez shirt, a Varitek shirt, a Schilling...and so forth.
