Ok, I can't install Office in my new machine and I can't figure out why...

My new pc is running a retail copy of Windows Vista Ultimate on my new pc, and got an educational copy of Windows Office Professional 2007. I popped the DVD in the drive, the autorun kicked in and then the Vista installation warning popup. Once I click continue, the little blue circle spins for a little bit then stops and the dvd drive spins down.

I can't figure out why the setup cannot run. I can explore the disc and view the contents but cannot install the software.

Anyone have any idea why?

This happened to me with Adobe CS2 on Vista.
I didn't autorun. I went to windows explorer and clicked setup. It finally launched from there.

is there any other versions of office on there? if so, make sure they are all uninstalled as well as any beta copies you might have had. I have had trouble with that in the past

also make sure your account has admin and install privileges. i am sure it does, but something stupid like that could be causing the problem's

I tried that. Didn't work.

You know how clean my install is. It's a month old system and the amount of software on there right now equates to browsers, messengers, and Half-Life.

And the machine only has the one account on it. Everything else has installed without a problem.

could be corrupt files on your DVD. do you have access to download it from somewhere, and then just use your valid product key?

From what you describe it's hard to tell, I'm assuming it's the x86 not the x64 version of Vista if you didn't mention it, otherwise it almost sounds like a corrupt installer. Do you have any other XP comp's around to test if it's the disc?

Maybe it doesn't like vista. Try right clicking on the setup.exe or the .msi installer on the disc, properties, compatibility and select "run as WinXP SP2 compatibility" and try installing again. If no go go down to Win2k and try again...

If it's not that I can only guess it could be a problem with vista's new UAC installation security service (the permission prompt for installing software etc...) Try disabling it, rebooting, and try to install again.

Here's a UAC disable howto:

If the DVD's bad then that's a real good idea, I believe you can activate a trial download from Microsoft if you have a valid key. I'm not sure about your educational edition key. Chances are the trial version will only only take a retail key.

yeah, I don't know if a trial version would work with my key because it's a legit education edition of Office.

you might have the wrong hardware. a typewriter taped to a toaster is not a pc.

Whoa haven't seen one of those in a long time. Try using OpenOffice for the time being.

This scary post made me so happy that I had bought Office with the new laptop I got last week. I hate having to deal with installing new things on my own.

I'm glad you got it to work JJ.

My burner is only like a year and a half to two years old, but they haven't updated the firmware since May 2006. I bought an LG with Lightscribe (loves me some lightscribe), and it wasn't a bad deal at Best Buy for $75.
