I never liked beer. Everyone I knew would either drink shitty beer (Bud and those types) or the really dark types that I hated (Guinness). In my now 27th year of life, I decided to try to get a job with Harpoon here in Boston and decided I should probably try some of their stuff. Someone recommended their hefeweizen to me, UFO. I actually didn't hate it. It had a good flavor, and it came with a fruit, which is something I've always liked in the only beer I'd ever drink (Corona). So I decided to try other hefeweizens.
This type of beer is so fucking good. In like 2 months or so, I've tried a few and they are all good (except for Sam Adams Hefeweizen, which tastes like Bud). Paulaner, Hacker-Pschorr (Weisse), today I bought Hofbrau Hefe Weizen and its great.
At a bar, I asked for their hefeweizen and they gave me this beer in a tall, goofy glass called Franziskaner Weissbier. Its absolutely the best tasting liquid ever to touch my lips. Not even just beer or liquor, but any drink I've ever had. Its fucking amazing.
And all of these beers come with either an orange or lemon in them, which is something I love. More fruit in beer! Especially seeing that I don't eat any fruits or vegetables in normal life.
For a lot of my life, I thought people just kept drinking beer until they didn't mind the taste, because I couldn't understand how anyone could drink it. Now I've tried other beers (other than hefeweizen) and have realized that I just don't like thick beer or shitty beer. And my wife and I are actually thinking of going to the Belgian Beer Fest this weekend just so I can try more beers.
Has this happened to anyone else? Did you hate beer until someone actually gave you something good, and it actually surprised you that you liked it? And what are people's favorite beers? Finding the Franziskaner in a liquor store was REALLY fucking hard. I've only seen it in two liquor stores so far, and neither of them are anywhere close to my house.
So yeah, beer is good after all.

I've always been a fan of beer. I started drinking it when I moved to Germany in high school.
Hefeweizen is my favorite style of beer. Kristallweizen is very good too. Basically, it's hefeweizen with the yeast removed, so it is clear instead of cloudy.
It sounds like you are getting into many of my favorite brands. I just had Franziskaner Hefeweis for the first time in a few years and it was delicious. Also a fan of Paulaner and Hofbrau.
Locally, Dominion brews a hefeweizen that is excellent. Best American-made version I have tried.
I usually take the fruit out of the glass, I like the taste of the beer so much.

And I just cannot tell enough people about the Franziskaner. Its so good.

I'm of the opinion that most people who dislike beer dislike it because all they've ever had is shitty frat party swill like Bud Lite. A few of my favorites:

Sierra Nevada Pale Ale
Sweetwater Blue

I'm definitely agreeing with you now. Another problem is everyone raves about Guinness, but its a very big beer for someone who doesn't like beer.
My wife was convinced that she really didn't like beer. But she liked Bass and Stella. That's when I told her she probably didn't like shitty beer. She obviously liked two beers that were far away from each other. Then she discovered nut browns and now she loves beer.
And Blue Moon was really good, too.

QTF, and I've never Q'd anything FT before, but I agree with you 100%.
In my palate-forming years I lived in an area where Yeungling was easily available, so I got a taste for beer that wasn't based on Coors and Bud. I don't remember my first beer ever, but I do remember the first beer I drank legally. It was a Yeungling Black & Tan. It was wonderful.
Underdog, given your quick jump past swill into the finer fruits of barley, I have a feeling that you will be liking Guinness in just a matter of time. Get a pint from a good pub (not just any ol' bar) because the taps will be fresh and the lines will be clean. Sit at the bar and order, and just let it sit for a minute while it "cascades." When you take that first sip, you can feel the malty-nuttiness in your taste buds and olfactory glands...
Man I want a pint right now. I wish I could be there with you.

I used to be a beer snob, but it's because I had so much available as a bartender in a bar with around 50 beers to choose from. I would almost NEVER drink anything like Bud in those days. I rarely drink beer now (mostly just rum), but when I do it's mostly Beck's or Michelobe Light.
Edit... Forgot about Yuengling. Love the Yuengling!

Well, if by mainstream you mean the light beers, they essentially are. And even their non-light varieties don't have much more flavor. I love beer, and love to try new ones. Wheats are great (and no, the lemons and oranges are not gay!), and so are pale ales, and those dark, rich, flavorful ones. It's like drinking chocolate, coffee, and beer all at once!
Any time someone says they hate beer, but all they've ever had is something like Coors Light, I'm like, "Don't even call that beer. Let's go through a Sam Adams sampler, and then tell me what you think. Cherry Wheat, or Black Lager?"
I think I'm gonna have to pick up some McEwan's Scotch Ale tomorrow. Screw the vodka diet!
shitty beer (Bud and those types)
:nono:
I've had some good beers around the world so I'm not opposed to drinking much better stuff than my beloved Bud Light. However, since I'm going to piss out whatever I drink in due course anyway, I'll stick with the cheaper alternative.

Beer is just OK. I've had a lot of different beers and none of them have impressed me so much that I MUST drink them everytime I'm in a place that serves or get some for home. I'll go months between beers.
When I am in the mood for a beer, I usually just drink MGD. Easy to find, inexpensive and really not bad at all.

I generally don't drink beer because it fills me up too much. Even the watered down light beers out there fill me up too much, so I usually drink Knob Creek and diet cokes.
However, I do like dark beers, and enjoy Sam Adams, Sam Adams Lite, Pete's Wicked Ale (I stopped seeing it in Manhattan, but up here in CT, it's all over), Bass, and similar beers.

It's Guinness for me, all the time. It's delicious. And, if you're into counting, less calories than your typical Bud, Coors or Miller light beer and all the other fancy beers.
As for fruit, hell, I don't even like a lemon in my water. No fruit for me in any drink. Yuengling is great. Another beer I've recently discovered is a Dominican Republic beer, El Presidente Cerveza (http://www.briansbelly.com/beerbelly/presidente.shtml), which is fantastic, and apparently only available in the DR and New York.

Call me old fashioned Cliff, but the only thing I like floating in beer is my liver.
I am married to a beer snob, so it makes looking into our fridge very interesting. As noted upthread, I have to be in a certain "mood" to enjoy high-quality beers like Guiness. But I'm perfectly happy with a Miller Lite. That's my "mealtime" beer, or if I'm watching a game or something.

Ah, Duvel. Good stuff. Unfortunately, due to Alabama's ultra-conservative alcohol-by-volume limits, it's illegal to sell it here.

I agree with this. As much as I love the pricey top-shelf stuff, I can also be content with Miller Lite or Miller High Life. They're good binging beers. Getting shitfaced on expensive beer fills me up too fast, and it's a waste of money.

Try these Belgium beers:
Leffe
Stella Artois
Lambic Ale
Delirium
Build a Kegerator, and get a fresh keg off the line at a decent brewery and serve it with c02. The taste is remarkable.
Try putting a slice of orange in your Blue Moon.
Try a toothpick size slice of jalapeno pepper in your Corona.
Make a Redbeer, put some snappy tom in a very cold Bud or Coors, with some pepper salt for a poor mans bloody mary.

many american beers are watered down. people who are used to drinking regular, adult beers can't help but notice that something is missing when they drink a bud, or a PBR or some other whiz.
-anything with fruit is sissy, but refreshing at times
-anything with "lite" or "less than" is not beer, and is mostly for frat boys and other people unsure of their sexual orientation.
-people going around asking about "heifweizens" and "hearty stouts" are nobs too. know the name of your beer and ask for it by name.

The Brewmaster at Brooklyn Brewery has a great book, "Brewmaster's Table." It breaks down a lot of the different beer styles as well as different brands, and tells you how to pair certain foods with certain beers. I've found it very helpful and it's great if you want to check out some new beers.
If you can get your hands on any of the beers from Great Lakes Brewery, I highly recommend giving them a shot.

I think that I'm only a beer snob because I'm a lightweight.
I mean, if I can't drink more than a pint or two anyway, why should I waste my time on something that doesn't have much of a flavor to it?
It does depend on my mood, but you know, like they say, to every thing there is a season. . .and there's got to be a season for Miller High Life. (Yes, I do drink Miller High Life.)

Coors Light (In a can)
Anchor Steam (San Francisco history in a bottle)
Big Rock Warthog Cream Ale
Unibroue Éphémère
Lagunitas Sirius Ale (hoo hoo)
...and pretty much everything else except for some single I bought at Trader Joe's for a dollar which tasted like those bacon-flavored crackers.

-people going around asking about "heifweizens" and "hearty stouts" are nobs too. know the name of your beer and ask for it by name.
That's ridiculous.
First, if you know what hefeweizen and stouts are, and are willing to ask about them, you're already well ahead of the game. One of the beauties of enjoying craft beer is that there is so much variety out there and being able to explore new beer styles and brands.
Second, a virtue of any truly great beer bar is that they're going to have stuff you haven't tried, or even heard of, on the menu. Even if you know the place, they should be rotating in new brands to try.
Only drinking one specific brand of craft beer is almost as bad as not trying any at all.
That said, I'm a big fan of:
Sierra Nevada (Pale Ale, Celebration Ale)
Stone IPA and Arrogant Bastard (try Double Arrogant Bastard if you can find it!)
Blue Point Hoptical Illusion

Man Calls 911 And Demands Beer (http://www.wlbz2.com/news/watercooler/article.aspx?storyid=74280)
HEBRON, CT (NBC) -- It may have seemed like an emergency at the time, but a Connecticut man is now regretting his call to 911.
35-year-old Brian Poulin of Hebron was arrested Sunday after police said he called 911 several times and asked them to bring him beer.
Hebron was charged with disorderly conduct.
Police said he called 911 numerous times and told the dispatcher he was out of beer and asked them to pick up more for him.
Poulin was transported to Windham Community Memorial Hospital after officers arrested him at his home.
Police did not say what he was treated for.
He is scheduled to appear in Superior Court in Rockville on Nov. 20.

Lindemans makes some EXCELLENT lambics. They are a Belgian brewery that has been in operation for nearly 200 years.
I have had the framboise (raspberry) and kriek (cherry), both of which are excellent. I think they have several other flavors as well, but I haven't had them - I remember hearing about peche (peach) and pomme (apple), and I believe there are a couple more.
Lambics are also really good when mixed with a stout or porter. If you can get your hands on a good chocolate stout (like Rogue or Wells & Youngs) you are in for a tasty treat. I like using 1/3 glass of lambic with 2/3 stout, but you will often see a half & half split.

During these troubled, turbulent times, we should focus on one thing that unites us all.
How great beer is.
Tonight was one of my old favorites, Boddington's Ale with their draught can technology. They did a much better job than Guiness' Rocket Widget in my opinion, very close to the true tap experience.
Also, the best beer with a McRib? Discuss.

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/01/09/dining/09beer.html?th&emc=th
Overproduction of hops in the early 1990s resulted in excess supply and depressed prices, said Ralph Olson, a hops dealer based in Yakima, Wash. As a result, world hop acreage has fallen from about 234,000 in 1994 to 113,000 in 2006. It may take several years, Mr. Olson suggested, for hops production to be able to meet current demands.
Thanks, in part, to our government's incentives to farmers for bio-diesel crops. They also left out the tonnage of hops lost in california due to fire this year (that were already harvested).
I liked the analogy of hops to a brewer as salt is to a chef, it was dead on.
I'm not a big fan of these "extreme" beers but one of the stepping stones to this madness deserves to be mentioned. "Hop Devil IPA" by Victory, this stuff was "extreme" before it was in fashion. (My personal favorite in this genre)

If you frequent an establishment that moves a lot of draught Stella just ask whoever does the ordering for the place.
They come six to a box in a regular cardboard package. If you're a worthy customer, they should have no problem getting you a set. They're free from the distributor and are readily available.
There are two sizes printed right on the glass with a line marker...40cl (served in nice bars) and 33cl (served in places where the owners are tight). For pouring from the bottle at home I would try for the 33cl ones but thats only if beggars can be choosers.

The other night I tried an O'Hanlon's Ruby Stout. It was really fucking good. It's bottle conditioned, (it has dead yeast in it, if you don't know what that means, they look like boogers, basically). It's finished with Port Wine, which I thought would turn me off, but it all turned out well.
I also had the chance to get a case of Dale's Pale Ale from Oskar Blue's brewing. It was also really good. The best part is that it only comes in cans. But I'm partial to the pale ales, so my opinion of it might not be completely objective

but if you enjoy fruit in your beer, youre an absolute homo. thats just my opinion. i still think youre cool, even if youre a total queer.
Lambic beer is a completely interesting rich-in-history beer from Belgium; in fruit lambic beer the alcohol is derived from the spontaneous fermentation. Sometimes it's corked rather than capped in a bottle. It's quite good, except most of what I can find is Lindeman's Kriek with a yellow label, which tastes like wine barf. Lindeman's Kriek with the black label is good, but made with syrup instead of real fruit. I think this is the good stuff:

I also hate beer. In my opinion, any type of liquor is dangerous to our health. I always thought that in spite of knowing the side effects of beer, people drink this beer.
Edited... I started a stupid racist rant that really wasn't my style.

I'm working on a Belgian Trappist ale - Kwak.
One of the nicer parts of living in the city is having a korean deli on the corner with a freestanding shelving unit solely devoted to belgian ales, and they're NOT refrigerated.
2 of those and a vicodin and I'm right it the groove.
I definitely envy you, my friend. in the wonderful heart of dixie, quality beers are few and far between. got a 6% abv limit on beer here in alabama. have some good friends who regularly bring me good craft beers back from out of state. belgian beers are even harder to come by. I do have some Chimay and some Lindemans cellaring as we speak

This local bar near me has been selling this Blue Point Blueberry beer for the last few months and I just fouud out they were based out of Long Island.
Hiring for sales reps in southern Connecticut.
Have any of you guys had any of the Captain larence beers ?
They're made locally here, in Pleasantville NY, but I see they have a failry wide distribution in NYC, NJ and Boston for a a regional beer.
I've had 1 or 2 types and they're alright but so far nothing great.
I guess I should try some other flavors.

Bob,
You got some "a lernin' ta do". Before you go back to watching "larry the Cable Guy" Re-runs, give this a gander...
Most people cant pronounce this beer and it's the oldest brewery in America! (started by a German):
http://www.yuengling.com/images/beers_lager.jpg
And as for "American" beer like Bud, Coors, & Miller...
ALL of these companies and their recipes were started by German immigrants.
Bud:
http://www.beerhistory.com/images/portbusch.jpg
Adolphus Busch
Beer has been brewed in Ceske Budejovice since it was founded as Budiwoyz by king Premys II Otakar in 1245. The German name for the town is Budweis. The name "Budweiser" is a locative, meaning "of Budweis."
Coors:

Adolph Coors
Miller:

Frederick Miller

Yeah very clever.
All of our ancestors came from another country though.
After re-reading my post I realized the amount of hate toward beers that I normally dont associate with. I am really not that hate filled inside and I apologize to all beers that I singled out. My favorites are APA's and IPA's. I'm a fan of the hops. I usually drive over to Maryland just to beer shop at a liquor store that caters to micro and craft lovers. If I don't have the extra time to drive over, most here in Delaware carry Sierra Nevada Pale Ale which is always drinkable.
Here's my list:
Tröegs Nugget Nectar
Tröegs Hopback Amber Ale
Tröegs Sunshine Pils (perfect for the summer)
Smuttynose IPA
Smuttynose Summer Weizen
Magic Hat Hi.P.A.
Magic Hat Hocus Pocus
Magic Hat Roxy Rolles
Anchor Steam Summer Ale
Sierra Nevada Celebration Ale
Stone Ruination IPA
Dogfish Head 60 Minute IPA

I <3 Hoegaarten!
I wait all year for two of the Sam Adams seasonals - I like their Summer Ale and their Oktoberfest. Both are great paired with burgers.
The Sierra Nevadas I've tried have been waaaay too hoppy for my taste...seems like they added hops to increase their shippability (which is how India Pale Ales were started, in case nobody mentioned it) and they just come out bitter.
Needless to say, I am not the biggest fan of IPA's, but I do enjoy me a good pale ale.
For example, I tried a Pale Ale at Yogi's All-American Grill & Bar and enjoyed it very much ... nice, floral nose from the hops, smooth going down and no bitter aftertaste. Gorgeous golden color, too. (Yum.) But, for the life of me, I can't remember who brews it. (Dammit!)

Based upon a recommendation, (thanks again, bossdjbware), I visited a local liquor store that back in my college days used to be a shithole, cases of Natty Light as far as the eye can see. Now the selection is incredible, and went a little nuts. Here's my haul...
Piraat 4 pack
Chimay Single
Delirium Tremens 4 pack
Boddington's 4 pack
Old Speckled Hen 6 pack
Case of Landshark Lager
Shiner Bock 6 pack.
I won't discuss how much I spent.
The Speckled Hen was probably the most surprising, because it's the one I knew the least about. The Piraat was fantastic, the Delirium is no joke, and I haven't had the Chimay yet.

Tonight I had a Dogfish Head Immort Ale.
Very good. Brown ale with hints of vanilla, almost winter-like.
But at 11% ABV, I decided to only have one.
Dogfish Head has a ton of great stuff out now. I went to Dave's Beer and Soda in Bellprt and loaded up on some of their offerings. Of course, the amazing 120-minute IPA, Fort (18% ABV) is strong but solid, Black & Blue and Red & White are not quite that strong but were aged with fruit in different wine casks, and Pangea, which claims to have ingredients from all 7 continents (complete with melted ice from Antarctica.)

I love beer!! I secretly consider myself a beer snob actually. The first time I realized beer actually tasted really good was when I had my first Newcastle. After that I was hooked and now my boyfriend CHUCKWAGONCOOK and I plan some vacations around different micro-breweries. We also brew our own, which is simple and delicious!! My favorite all time brewery is by far New Belgium out of Fort Collins, CO. Their 1554 is unreal and their Sunshine Wheat is light, flavorful and so refreshing. I could just go on and on talking about beer....
Just don't ever offer me a Bud.:drunk:

For my birthday last year my mom got me a beer of the month club membership. I get a 12 pack filled with 3 bottles of 4 different types of beer from 2 microbreweries each month. I was never a fan of bud, miller, coors etc. After sampling a lot of beer in the past year, I think I have to stick with an IPA. Even a little warm they still go down smooth, and get you buzzed after just a couple. This one especially:

OK fellow beer snobs, all this talk about good beer and no talking about brewing your own? For a little investment you can make your own micro-brew style beers fairly easily at home, and when you find your favorite you can tweak it batch to batch to really learn what you like. In order to do it right you need to spend ~$300 on equipment and bottles, but then a 5 gallon batch costs 30~50$.
At home I only drink home brew, so when I go out and have a micro-brew or a Bud it just doesn't taste the same. I am a fan of hoppy pale ales, so I am growing hops in the back yard this year. Trust me if you have the space, the time, the $, and a local brewing supply shop you should try it, you'll never go back.
Anyone who wants help getting started / has questions pm me.

Joe - you may have had their Dreamweaver Wheat, which is one of my favorites.
If you ever get a chance, the brewery tour is great. It isn't a huge place, but one of the brothers always runs the tours and you can get a TON of great info. Tours run on Saturdays, although I can't remember the exact time (1:00pm I think).
The best part is the Tasting Room, where you can usually taste everything they are offering at the moment - standard brews and seasonals. They also create "Scratch Beers" that are essentially experimental brews that they make in limited batches and offer for tasting and in cases (maybe Growlers too).
Appalachian Brewing Company is also about a mile away. I have a Mug Club Membership there and they have some pretty good beers and good food. Although, I am not entirely sure about their new brewmaster - the last couple seasonal batches I tried haven't been up to par IMO.

And Shiner blows the doors off Yuenling anyday. They make a couple more varieties (hefeweisen, blonde, etc...) which are all awesome. Quite the brewery tour, if you're ever driving between San Antonio and Houston--it's only a few miles off the road.

My dad and I drank at a bar in Shiner, TX and we talked to some locals there. Some of the nicest people around.
They used to be exclusive to TX. Now we all can share the goodness.

I really liked the Pomegranate Wheat, it was a nice change of pace. My sister in law brought me a mixed 12 pack of New Belgium, and I'll say this New Belgium 1554 fucking ruled!

Hi, first post.
This is exactly what happened to me. I became a beer snob too for several years. Now.. not so much. I will drink just about anything now. I might just be a lush though.

Does Spanish Peaks still operate? I liked their stuff too when I would go out there.
Man, I'd forgotten about those guys. Apparently hey folded while I was in Japan, then relaunched, then somebody else took them over and it's now brewed somewhere else?? http://www.blackdogales.com/. I haven't seen anything on the shelves.
I'm going to see if I can find something from Blackfoot tonight.

When I did - I recall the following fondly:

Anchor Steam when I could find it.
Don't ask me why, but those honey browns and whatnot types of lagers went really well with some kind.

We used to have this on tap. Distributed by our Miller guys. 2 or 3 years ago we were the first to put this piss on tap in a NJ bar and the Leinenkugles were in town to promote and they didn't even check us out. F them and their sugar water.

Yeah, I've never had that kind of porter, but...the only kind of stout/porter that I like (and I REALLY like it) is the Guinness, et al straight-up stouts. When they start adding additional flavoring to it, I feel like I should add a scoop of ice cream.

I've been addicted to Lionshead recently. It is a great great tasting pilsner out of Wilkes-Barre, PA. It has a faintly sweet taste, but goes down real smooth. Great sipping or chugging beer. That, and it is like 13 bucks a case. I'm not kiddin', it is a steal for some quality beer.

It looks like Labatt Blue will actually be brewed in Canada for the next three years.
US: InBev must sell Labatt USA to close Bud deal (http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5iZWhCuVStfIfnl57P1Z_u2D6iu4gD94EV30O1)
The Justice Department approved a $52 billion beer buzz Friday, allowing Belgium-based InBev SA to buy out Anheuser-Busch and create the world's largest brewer. But InBev's buzz comes with a slight hiccup: It must sell subsidiary Labatt USA to win regulatory approval.
Labatt Blue and Labatt Blue Light have less than 1 percent share of the U.S. market, but in upstate New York they go head-to-head with Anheuser-Busch Cos. Inc.'s Budweiser and Bud Light, and MillerCoors LLC brands like Coors Light and Miller Lite.
Labatt Brewing, in Canada, will brew and supply the brands to a U.S. licensee for an interim period of three years, the companies said.

If you live in NYC and you can get down to chambers street in Manhattan, their is a sports bar called Mudville 9 and they have about 100 different beers. In bottle or on tap. Every different type. Great to watch a football game and down about 9 or 10 different beers.
I use to love Sam Adams but now it sort of hurts my stomach...don't know why. Now I love Brooklyn lager from the Brooklyn Brewery. Also Love Mad Hat, Blue moon with a slice of orange, and Shock top.
Can't drink bud or Millar..it is like water.

I picked up this at Whole Foods last night. Its not a beer you want to get hammered on but its a nice, end of the night beer if you're just chillin at home watching TV.
The flavor of the banana nut bread doesn't hit you till the after taste and the beer isn't heavy at all.

I didn't see anybody mentioning Corsendonk:
http://www.novusvinum.com/images/beer/fallbeers/corsendonk.jpg
I enjoy the Abbey Brown Ale ... it has a velvety smooth body, subtle hints of raisin-y sweetness and a very high alcoholic content, which makes it a great dessert beer. Or you could pair it with some nice double-creme cheese and hearty bread, which is what the monks used to drink it with. Of the other drinkers I know personally, nobody likes it but me. Which stinks because I can finish a bottle by myself, but I'll pass out right afterwards.
I did see someone mention Hoegaarden earlier, which I love this time of year because of all the holiday spices - cardamom, clove, cinnamon - that come out in it when that slice of lemon is added, but, hey, that's not everybody's preferred pint. (Apparently, I've been enjoying the "Speciale" version of this item, and it is only brewed this time of year. This is fine by me because I wouldn't drink anything like this in the summertime. Although the basic might pair well with fish.)
