What is the most significant event that happened the year in which you were born ?

(other than the physical act of you actually being born)

1975 for me - The fall of Saigon, ending the Vietnam War.

The most devastating thing that happened the year I was born also happened on the DAY I was born. Martin Luther King, Jr. was shot 5 hours before I arrived on the earth. My mom watched Washington DC burn from her hospital window. An awful day...
