Harry Potter fans, the rumors are true: Albus Dumbledore, master wizard and Headmaster of Hogwarts, is gay. J.K. Rowling, author of the mega-selling fantasy series that ended last summer, outed the beloved character Friday night while appearing before a full house at Carnegie Hall.
She was asked by one young fan whether Dumbledore finds "true love."
"Dumbledore is gay," the author responded to gasps and applause.
She then explained that Dumbledore was smitten with rival Gellert Grindelwald, whom he defeated long ago in a battle between good and bad wizards. "Falling in love can blind us to an extent," Rowling said of Dumbledore's feelings, adding that Dumbledore was "horribly, terribly let down."
Dumbledore's love, she observed, was his "great tragedy."

Sounds to me like she just wants more controversy with the religious right, when her next movie comes out. The more they bitch about the franchise, the better she does.

I would like to reveal at this time that The Great Gatsby was lactose intollerant.
WTF is this supposed to prove? She decides to give this guy a gay back-story at some book reading lecture, now that the series is over. If she had any balls she would have included an overt story line in the books. Of course if she did that the religious wahoos, who already attack the books because of the whole wizard thing, would have had a conniption.

Back to what I said... I think she wishes she had the foresight to have included it in the books. It is a pretty lame move, though.

There's just no reason for her to say this. I've read the books and did not pick up on it at all. Dumbledore was always asexual to me. With a few exceptions (married couples/parents and I thin 3 boyfriend/girlfriend sub-storylines), the sexual preference of any character in the stories is extraneous and inconsequential. Was she pressured from the GLBA because there were no gay characters in her books?

no wonder he had hog warts
Anyone want to take bets on whether the next movie bombs?
And I wonder how long before an "O'Reilly boycott of Harry Potter / everyone who watches the Factor should start a community bonfire to burn all things Harry Potter" movement.
Guarantee the religious right will be in full spin mode to try and force the next movie to bomb.
Still, it'll probably destroy everything by a healthy margin at the box office.

Rowling also admitted that any male over the age of 12 that willingly reads her Potter books is, in fact, a queer.

I know a kid who reads these books and went to the midnight book releases wearing a cape. Of course, he's fucking this girl I used to have a thing for so I guess his wizardry allows him to get it to work with a female. Or maybe she was really a guy...aw fuck.

This is stupid, I'm a Harry Potter nut since day one...why would she reveal this now?
She then explained that Dumbledore was smitten with rival Gellert Grindelwald, whom he defeated long ago in a battle between good and bad wizards.
This character, Grindelwald, was not even mentioned until the last book and it was in reference of him being a childhood friend of Dumbledore, he was evil and then they became enemies before Dumbledore finally dueled him and locked him away forever. Other than that they never referenced him or any other 'male friend' of his. Stupid.
If it was that important, put it in the book, otherwise, shut your filthy rich mouth and enjoy your castle in Scotland.

It's not like she called everyone around to declare this out of nowhere. She was asked a question about a character that she had created and his lovelife. She answered the question. By some of the responses here, if she had talked about anything not in the book, she shouldn't be talking about anything. They're her characters.

I don't blame her for waiting until now that her books are out there to out Dumbledore. It gives some things in the books a little more meaning, and also makes Dumbledore a little more human. If there were an explicitly gay character in the books, she could be accused of indoctrinating children in the art of the homo, getting even more of her books pulled from schools. Plus, it still pisses off the hayseeds, and THAT is always a bonus.

I see what you're saying and I'm probably having a knee-jerk reaction right now because I love the books and characters so much.
People already rag on me for loving HP so much, now I have to withstand this barrage of teasing (awww, poor me)!!
I guess she may have never been asked that question before but with all the tours she's done and questions she's answered it seems like it should have come up before. If she created him gay it wasn't incorporated into the books and it was never mentioned by her before, that's what I find odd.

And I wonder how long before an "O'Reilly boycott of Harry Potter / everyone who watches the Factor should start a community bonfire to burn all things Harry Potter" movement.
It has led to another Lol'Reilly moment (http://www.towleroad.com/2007/10/oreilly-bothere.html) :
O’REILLY: Here’s — you can talk about this on your radio show tomorrow. There are millions of Americans who feel that the media and the educational system is trying to indoctrinate their children to a certain way of life, and that includes parity for homosexuals with heterosexuals. And that’s what this Rowling thing is all about, because she sells so many books. So many kids read it, that she comes out and says, “Oh, Dumbledore is gay, and that’s great.” And this — it’s another in the indoctrination thing. That’s what the belief system is among some Americans.
DENNIS MILLER: I’ll be honest with you. I don’t think you can indoctrinate a kid into being gay. You might indoctrinate him into trying it once and him going, “I guess I’m not gay.”
O’REILLY: No, but tolerance. It’s — you know, he’s not going to be gay, but it’s tolerance of it.
---
OHNOES! People might be tolerant of gays! Its the end of the world! TOLERANCE!
