Since people seem to like bragging about their new computers, I figured I'd share my new one...


The specs:
Cooler Master Cosmos Case
Asus Strike Extreme Mobo
OCZ Platinum Ram - 2 1gb sticks
Cooler Master 650W Power Supply
Core 2 Duo E6750 Proc
Hitachi Deskstar K1000 HD
Geforce 8800 GTS
And running Vista Ultimate as the OS

And I worked from a gaming motherboard, which gave me the most flexibility for the build, plus some weird, funky bonuses.

all the wires reached the front? my MoBo firewire would not reach the front panel so it is not hooked up

yeah, no probs. And this thing is a full tower, as opposed to a mid sized tower (I didn't realize when I bought it that I bought such a large one, but it kicks ass). The coolest thing though is how you slot in the 5.25" drive bays and just push a button to lock it in place.

I do it for people at work all the time.
Most of them are so stupid it's amazing they're able to start their cars in the morning.

And don't be intimidated. If you've replaced hard drives and such, a complete build will be no problem at all. The hardest part is hooking the front panel wires to the motherboard. And that's not really hard. Just annoying sometimes.

Oh, and for some reason, I always get a bunch of tiny cuts on my fingertips. Lots of sharp edges. Have some Neosporin handy.

the cuts come from the case edges. more expensive cases usually do not cut as bad. those fucking things hurt like hell though

Very quiet. But I'm having heating issues. I have the pc under my desk, so I may just have to move it out and see if that fixes it. It wasn't an issue with the old case, but I think the mid-size tower gave it more room to release heat.

I know Nvida likes to put HD ready and PureVideo HD onboard on thier boxes but when you decode any HD video the CPU will still does 90-95% of the work. It really makes no difference what card you have, even when you use Nvidia's own HD codecs. Plus ATI cards decode HD just as well using Nvidia's HD codecs. It's a marketing gimmick.



I like your system, I'm due for an upgrade, I'll probably be goin for a similar setup in the next couple o months. My 939 motherboard chipset blew out, and I can't find another 939 board anymore. I also have a similar case, I can't go back to screws or anything less than snap on components.

As far SLI, I've never quite understood the mass appeal. You pay 100% more for just a 20-30% performance boost. Whereas if you opt for just a single faster card you'll usually pay 40-50% more for a 30% performance gain. There's not much faster than an 8800 gts though, however SLI really is only for people who have to have the absolute fastest comp possible where price is no object. Games just aren't made to take full advantage of 2 videocards.

I have a 7800GT so I can't speak from experience for the 8000 series. I have seen the pricetag and specs of the 8800 GTX and the only huge difference is the incredible 768MB of RAM. Don't know if any games would take advantage of it though. To me the clock speed difference is not worth the huge pricetag.
