well, i have finally come to the realization that i must lose weight. my current lifestyle is proabably not the best, and other factors have put this into perspective.
my wife has successfuly (and easily) dropped 25lb via weight watchers (since april). if she can do it, why cant i?
at 280lbs, this is no way healthy. for the new job, i had to go clothes shopping, and that was painful. but perhaps the biggest deciding factor was my son. i cant imagine dying from a heart attack, or some other weight- based condition. i look and play with him, and think to myself that i want to be around to see him grow up, fall in love, rock out on stage, be successful, and maybe even have kids of his own. i see the joy that he brings to my father and father-in-law, and hope to one day be at that point.
so, i will be starting weight watchers as of saturday. every saturday, i will weigh in and post my results. this will be my "meeting" or "group therapy".
dont care? then dont read the thread.

I had the same pants buying problem. Twice. Once in the spring before I took a trip to Paris, and then again in August when I started this job. So, I finally bought a gym membership. I weighed in at 302 pounds.
I've been slacking on the cardio most of the time, but I've been following a "bodybuilding diet" since then. I've slimmed down a little, but I still weigh about 300 pounds. I blame this on the drinking heavily for at least two nights a week.
My goal now is to do 5 days of cardio, 45-50 mins. and try to limit the drinking to just two nights. See if I can't drop a pound or two again this week. And so on 'til Christmas time. I really have put on a lot of muscle though.
http://www.zentraed.com/stillpumped.jpg
I eat 3-4 small meals a day along with guzzling down protein shakes in between, and even though I'm still way too heavy, I'm getting a lot more attention from the ladies when I go out now.

Mike, I'll back you up. I don't have a weight problem (God bless my metabilism) but my diet was pretty aweful. My phisical last month was a wake up call. Cholesterol was too high. Now I am eating much better and getting some more exersice.
And, MsTub dropped around 25 pounds and is looking pretty hot.
Zen, you are looking pretty buff. Nice job. (not too much Homo)

My wife did the Weight Watcher thing and was very successful with it until she was pregnant. They don't recommend pregnant women losing weight. When I noticed how easy it was for her I decided to give it a shot. Since April I went from 234lb to 182 lb and have been maintaining that weight since the end of August. It seems like it was an unhealthy weight loss (too much too fast), but I diligently followed the Weight Watcher plan. Turns out that my previous diet of all fried food 6packs of Budweiser were the culprit.
It is definitely possible and I wish you all the luck. I look forward to reading your results.

mid april I was at 264 lbs., 25% bmi, 43.5 inch waist
now I hover around 220 lbs. 15% bmi, and 36 inch waist
my wife and I went to a nutritionist and she was the greatest. I learned the basics of nutrition and what works best for my body and shazamn the weight flew off. Now that I switched from unhealthy food to healthy I prefer the good stuff and actually crave it.
i have energy all day where in the past i would crash around 3:00pm now I find myself going all day and my focus has improved as well.

I've never really struggled with my weight, but I do try to eat reasonably healthy food most of the time. At home, I eat lots of hard-boiled eggs, Boca burgers, tuna, carrots, baked chicken, etc. If I'm doing fast food, I go with grilled chicken sandwiches and--if possible--substitute a salad or fruit cup for fries.

Good luck with all you guys! Congratulations to Bama and Hippo especially for making so much progress! Keep up the hard work and the results will amaze you. Most of the time all it takes is drive and determination to keep at doing the right thing for yourself to make it work. The other thing is patience. Mike has the best attitude for it.
I drink lots of water instead of juice, soda, so on. It does wonders for me.
I run too. I do intervals of about 7-10 minutes running and 10 minutes walking for give or take 40-70 minutes. My minimum amount of time I allow myself any given session at the gym is 20 minutes.
Lost 40lbs in just a few months.

most doctors say that 2 lbs a week is healthy plus apid fat loss results in that flabby excess skin like you see on tv with the gastric bypass people who then need more surgery to remove all that skin

25 lbs in 6 months is not a lot of weight to lose. But it all depends on how much weight you needed to lose.
my wife is losing on average 1.5 lbs per week.
thats about 5-6 pounds per month, consistently.
thats what im looking for. im not looking for 30lbs in 30 days. that cannot be healthy.

You will lose more and quicker then your wife. Men always lose weight faster and easier then women.
I took nutrition certification about 7 years ago because I was into working out and anything health. I was always in shape and healthy, never over weight until 3 or 4 years ago. I got lazy, a lot of shit was going on in my life, I stopped working out, barely did anything. I gained a lot of weight. I decided about 3 months ago to get my health back on track. The first week of a diet is tough, but if you can get through it then your on your way. But remember it becomes a life change not really a diet. If you lose weight and reach your goal you cant just go back and eat the way you did before. You will gain it all back.
Now that Im back to following what I preach I have lost 51 lbs in 3 months. I dont starve myself I eat what I like. The key to losing weight or diets (life changes) is you need to eat foods you enjoy and look forward to eating. If you hate chicken and despise eating it, then dont eat it. If you love steak eat steak. But you need to find leaner cuts and eat smaller portions. All weight watchers does is teach you portion control and a point sytem to eat things you like. What happens is people use all their points on the shit they love and starve themselves the rest of the day, its not good. I dont like gimmick diet plans I would recommend you go see a nutritionist (usually some sort of DR) a certified nutritionist (not a DR) or a trainer. If you need help or have questions, PM me. In a weird way I m glad I gained the weight that I did. I now see how easy it is and know that anyone can gain weight and EVERYONE can lose it.

what type of healthy food do you guys eat?
In the a.m a small bowl of frosted flakes with skim milk. Mid morning I eat an apple. I have a good sized salad with both lunch and dinner and I try to use a fat free or light dressing. I eat a lot of chicken (not fried) and not much red meat. I don't drink any pop or I think you guys call it soda.
High fiber content in foods is healthy and gives you more leverage with higher calorie foods. I eat a lot of fat free refried beans with corn tortillas. I am not very pleasant to be around, but I am losing (maintaining) weight.
Smiler grogan is right. After my diet or should I say "lifestyle change" as the weight watcher people call it. I have felt better than I have had in a long time. The way they say lifetsyle change made it sound like I was going to go gay or bi.

I was 286 pounds Xmas 2005 and threw out my back. I got down as far as 205 in April of 2007 but I am at 235 currently. I just rejoined the gym and gave up the case a beer a week. My goal is to finally be down under 200 lbs which I havent been since 2001.
I travel alot (In New Mexico right now) and I find it hard to eat healthy when you cant eat 3 consistent meals. I tend to over eat or eat the wrong thing. Especially when I am short on time. This is the biggest problem I have.
I will update as I go also.
GOOD LUCK BUDDAYS!!

Exactly right. From Halloween to the New Year is the hardest time to diet or the WW people say "lifestyle change." You have already shown that you can make it through one of the rough spots with a loss.

do work son, keep it going. last september (2006) i decided it was time for me to stop looking like a slob. In a years time I've dropped about 20 lbs of fat. it doesnt seem like a lot because its only 20 lbs in 52 weeks, but i do cardio and weight lifting 5 days a week. so i think if i didnt lift i would have lost another 20 lbs or so, but putting on and maintaining muscle is fun too. ive been very consistent with my program and its worked out really well. ive been stepping up my cardio as of late so im hoping that within another years time i could see another 15 lbs or so come off. im now stronger then ive ever been in my life and my arms are pretty jacked. its a great feeling to see a body transformation. i wish you all the luck man, stay on it. after a while you start to get into a great routine and you actually feel like shit if you don't go to the gym.
topless_mike
11-21-2007, 06:38 AM
when you do the gym and proper diet, its a mind game because the muscle is so much heavier than the fat. you'll gain the weight that you want to lose, but you'll lose the inches that give you that slob appearance.
too many people dont understand that.

More time on the bike! You should be adding 5 minutes each week. An hour of cardio does wonders. Also, mix in some "sprint" intervals to make it more effective. 20-25 minutes is the recommendation for maintaining cardiovascular health, not for weight-loss.

Keep it up Mike...you'll get there. Slow and steady....1 to 2 lbs per week and yes, you will plateau...I was the QUEEN of plateaus. Whenever I would hit a plateau - I would change something up. Decrease exercise, increase exercise, increase water - if you're doing more cardio, switch to lifting..and vice versa.
Doing this, it's taken me 2 years but I've lost....drumroll.....130 pounds! I still have some poundage to lose but I feel so much better!!!

With cardio, your water weight will fluctuate a lot. I can drop 3 lbs in a workout, then come back in heavier than I started the next day. But week-to-week, the numbers keep going down.

You are absolutely right, Mike! I use www.fitday.com it's free on the interwebz (though you can purchase your own for 19.95 or something cheap). You enter the food you eat and it automatically tallies your carbs, fat, calories, etc. It has a database of LOTS of foods and you can customize foods as well. It has helped me tremendously!

I truly admire all of you who are losing weight at this time of year. I was lucky that i dropped my weight in the spring and summer when there are obviously more incentives and the body (mine anyway) shed pounds easily.
I am just doing maintenence during the winter keeping my weight at a good number and will start increasing the workouts as the weather improves.
good luck to us all.
for reference my weight during the summer 219-222 approx.
winter weight 223-226 approx.

Holidays are always and will always be the worst time of year for weight loss. The cheating that you say you are doing is necessary (in a way) to continue. If you eliminate all of your favorite foods from your diet, a day will come when you say "fuck it" and go nuts for a while and gain a considerable amount back. I think your doing a fantastic job.

at least you are realizing this now at 22, and not at 42.
when you write down everything that you eat, it really opens your eyes. thats what i like about weight watchers. and being 330, you are going to have a lot of points to work with.

Mike - walking is a great idea. Don't worry about being 'stuck'. When losing weight (and you HAVE lost a significant amount), your body thinks it's starving so it holds onto everything! I have been on plateaus last lasted a month or more. Up one lb, down 2 then up 1. You might want to start measuring yourself cause even when I didn't lose pounds - I lost inches.
As of today - I've lost 147.5 lbs - it has taken me 2+ years but it does come off.
My mantra - time passes whether I diet and exercise or not. Might as well lose weight as time passes!
You are doing great!!!!!! Don't get discouraged!

When I go away to work for my 20 days, that is my weight. I weigh my myself the morning after I return home from my shift; I'm 227. It's been fluctuating like that for the past year, 234 - 227... Every time.
I decided this time to start eating better and excersizing daily. So, I wake up at 4am and go to the gym. I do 40 - 45 minutes of cardio at first and then some light resistance weight training. I look like a sissy doing the weights I do, but my goal is only to tone the muscles that have gotten loose without building any new muscle. I eat a regular supper (smaller portion) and I bring fruit for breakfast and a shit load of vegetables to snack on through the day. I snack about 6 - 8 times during my 12 hours on site, so I'm never hungry but I'm never too full.
I'm excited to see the results when I get home, I'm not shooting for too much but even to get into this routine and to carry it over to future months will be beneficial in many ways.

I'm very happy for (&envious) of you. Great work.
I'm at an all time high and I just gotta get off of my ass to do some of the work that it takes to lose weight.
A new job prospect might help. (keeping my fingers crossed). I think that a job with a "regular" routine would really help me out. I've been out of the bar for a few months now due to problems with my joints. Hopefully, "Joethebartender" will be a misnomer soon.

I'm in a similar position as you Mike and I know how hard it is. I started dieting/exercising 1 month ago and I went from 283 lbs to 267.5 lbs. It's been SO hard and a LOT of work, and I'm still dying to lose more. It's great to see your success, you've really inspired me. Thanks.

I like this thread...maybe I should join your ronfez ww group. I can't afford to go to ww meetings anymore. I am turning 30 in September was hoping to be down A LOT of weight by then, like 75 lbs or so, but now I am hoping for 25-30 lbs. Thanks! You have inspired me.

I got rid of my scale cause I was obsessing.
Now, I only weigh myself at the gym and the doctors.

Hahaha.. my mother use to volunteer at a local hospital. She'd have to take peoples weight. One extremely obese woman comes in and laughs at my mom walking towards the scale saying: "Oh nooooes honey! I gets weighed on the meat scale!"
