I bought a converter for my laptop hard drive to put it in my desktop it fits in the laptop HD just fine but the desktop pin side has the full 40 male side and the female side has the one bottom middle hole blocked that corresponds with the missing laptop HD pin that isn't there. Do I remove this pin??? or is something else wrong. I am going to call the store on Monday to see what they say.

Toleedo,
What brand laptop is this? Some companies may use a proprietary connector to stop you from buying 3rd party drives.

it's Western Digital but the laptop hard drive hooks up fine it hooking up the converter into the desktop that is the problem.

<edit> The part that plugs into the motherboard on the desktop shouldn't have any pins blocked off. What kind of adapter do you have?

There are no plugs blocked off on the adapter the female part that is attached to the ribbon has a space blocked off. The adapter has no brand name on it, it is from a local computer store.

from my research i need to get a 40 pin female connector on that instead. Do I need to replace the entire IDE ribbon or just switch a connector?

New cable.
The pin in question carries no data, but I wouldn't break off the pin anyway. You can get parallel cables that don't have that pin blocked.
