Are there any good commentators left in sports?
I used to love listening to Sterling do Yankee broadcasts, but after "THHHHHHEEEEEEEEEEE YAANNNNNKKKKKKKKKEEEEEEESSSSSSSSS WWIIIIIINNNNNNNNNNN!!!" in 1996, it's been all catch phrase bullshit.
Susan Waldman consistently sucks.
Anyone else I've listened to I find boring or awful. I miss guys like Harry Carey and Phil Risuto in the booth.

John Miller. I love when he does national broadcasts. He just has a great voice.
And I like Joe Buck a lot of the time, too. He's got a perfect commentator's voice. I also miss Chris Collinsworth in the booth. He would actually add stuff to the conversation.

I've always liked Marv ALbert and Boomer Esiason doing Monday Night Football on Westwood 1.
Everyone on the Yankee broadcasts outside of Sterling, Waldman, and Kay are good.
Howie Rose and Tom McCarthy are really good too.
I hate to say it, I kind of enjoy Chris Carlin doing Rutgers games as well.

I don't know who Mike Emerick is, but he must be good if he's on the all-slobber team with Walton and Holtz.

George Foreman was the best boxing commentator, his insight was 2-3 rounds ahead of the action. He exposed all the subtle goin-ons that no-one else notices in a fight.
Worst: Roy Jones and Lennox Lewis, they comment like the they've sustained head truma because they have.
Larry Merchant the most entertaining and informed commentator of any sport.
http://bwaa.org/merchant.png
Up and comer: Max Kellerman(I-Rome), fitting in nicely at HBO, for a non ex-fighter he really knows what's goin on.. The HBO crew in general is the best outfit in sports.

Bas Rutten in MMA, same reasons as Foreman, he just knew what move or hold every fighter was going for before they did it. Really helped show MMA as a strategy driven sport. He makes Rogan sound like just a comedian. Since he left PRIDE it all went downhill.

I really dig Paul O'Neill. Outside of the great stories he tells he knows the game.

Bullshit, show me another commentator that would talk to an brutish angry athlete who just suffered their most embarrassing loss of their career and tell them exactly what everyone thinking, the way it is, no kissing ass and then proceed to tell them they should retire. He does that every time it's called for. He makes bad main events interesting.

I have to agree with HHH. Merchant is a doddering, drunk old fuck. He always tries to sum things up at the end of the fight, but ends up making absolutely no sense. I'm not a fan of Lampley either.
Foreman is good with a little bit of prodding. Emanuel Steward is usually good when they have him on.

I like Emanuel as a commentator, I don't like him as a trainer. The way he trains heavyweights really pisses me off. I'll take him over Merchant any day. Just because Merchant can say to a fighter 'you just got your ass kicked' doesn't mean he's a good commentator.

And he's an up and comer in terms of callin the big-show. He was mainly a post fight commentator all that time, not a blow-by-blow color commentator.

He's a functional drunk and I disagree that he doesn't make sense, a few times maybe but usually it takes no common sense to say the things he says. When he tells a fighter he didn't come to fight it's cause he didn't, when a fix is in he'll always tell the victor that his victory is questionable. Always puts someone in an awkward position trying to explain themselves, and calls them out when their dishonest.

in the NBA, i was greatly impressed by Van Gundy in these past playoffs. Yea, I said it, I watched the NBA playoffs. ALL of it.
Bob Papa is really good, and I'm glad he is finally getting to do some boxing, since not many people hear too much football on the radio.
And for anyone who misses a good bob murphy talk, Jerry Remy on NESN sox games is a nice throw back to those old days. Those guys actually manage to do pretty good broadcasts throught he sounds of imminent death

I like Emanuel too he's done a good job filling in for George. Problems he's trained too many of the main event fighters. He kinda becomes a homer when calling some fighters (ex. Winky Wright.)

i just started watching the dvd set of the 1979 World Series and it reminded me, Keith Jackson called a pretty good baseball game. He had a smooth, natural, no gimmicks way of broadcasting the pbp of a game where any type of baseball fan being die hard or casual could easily follow.

Mitch Holthus of the K.C. Chiefs
Merrill Reese of the Philadelphia Eagles
Harry Kalas and Larry Anderson of the Philadelphia Phillies
Ken Squier, CBS Radio NASCAR announcer in the 1980s.
In the NBA I'm a fan of Bill Walton, but I think Hubie Brown is a god. Everytime I hear Hubie work a game I learn something about basketball.
And being from Milwaukee, there is only one voice for baseball....."Mr. Baseball" himself, Bob Uecker.

Agreed. And his partner "DJ" is awful, too. I am baffled as to why the White Sox, who play in Chicago, want to have announcers who give the ambience of the deeeeeeeeeeeeeeep south. I mean, yeah, it's the southside and it's white trash-y as hell, but damn.

Yah, I still get Joe Buck and Chip confused. I really try to focus on the game with all the bad commentators out there of late, but don't they sound and act a lot alike. He's been pissing me off this whole playoffs and I'm usually doing work and chatting online, hence barely paying attention to the things he says. And why should I, has he added anything of substance? That's were I give a ton of credit to the likes of Al Leiter, as he breaks down choices, reasoning and conflicts a ton of the Michael Kay/Singleton comments. Like the fact that Singleton stated, "Jeter's batting edge should/would clearly give him the edge in the gold glove race." Now unfortunately this and aura actually do have an impact on the vote which is really a joke. But Al ripped him right away and stated, "Listen to what you just said. That doesn't make sense and shouldn't be a factor at all. It's the Gold Glove, and has nothing to do with offensive stats." Ken just went silent for a while and then tried to say it's important! Hilarious you fucking homer.

Harry Kalas and Larry Anderson of the Philadelphia Phillies
Swing...and a long drive, watch this baby, outta here!
Now I'm baised because I grew up listening to Harry Kalas and Richie Ashburn, but Harry really is a quality professional commentator. He's in the Baseball Hall Of Fame for it!
It's not just his easy going talk over the game, but he doesn't fill in every moment of the game with inane baseball blather... he'll allow you to listen to the sounds of the field, the crowds. That's a rare gift these days with so many commentators trying to fill up that space with dumb facts or stories.
As for football, we'll I don't think there is one good one out there on television. They say the same things every game and it's torture to listen to. Less commentating, more cheerleading! Why not just put a camera on the girls for a few moments of a time out instead of listening to some oaf say "Well, they gotta get the ball down the field and score if they want to win this game!"

Dave Jennings
The Jets let go of Dave Jennings and replace him with Marty Lyons, who for a huge, rough defensive lineman sounds surprisingly like a transexual. Dave Jennings was/is outstanding. At one point I think he was even up for consideration for MNF before they hired Dan Fouts. That's high praise for his work considering they usually want a name player in there and were actually considering a punter who spent his entire career in New Jersey.
