I hope you didn't look at the Eagles injury report this week...you'll just get more upset.

Oops, confused you with Boss.

My bad...it's been a long day...

If I had hair I'd be pulling it out.

I attempted to pull every last strand of mine tonight. WTF, a GD pitcher who has only 4 hits all year ends up with 2 accounting for the difference with his 3 RBI??? I just can't get over that. And then in the 7th, that speedy little Hawaiian saved at least a base clearing double. Oh the agony.
My hopes are the series continues just like the regular season and the Dodgers sweep three games in LA, bring some momentum back to Philly and close it out in 6. Then again I am realistic and fully suspect this to end in LA.
I do admit, it wasn't all that bad to see the Phillys come out and play like that today after Manuals mother passed away. At the moment I hate this team, but will be rooting for them if they get to the Series.

Top of the 7th. If the Phils wind up losing tonight, it won't be unexpected.

I had this one pegged as the toughest game going into the series.

Kuroda pretty much did to them what he did to them earlier this year. They just can't stay off his breaking stuff.

The big decider in whether this will probably go seven will be tomorrow's game. Blanton was solid against Milwaukee. Who knows what to expect from Lowe on short rest. It's likely to be a bullpen battle.

If the Phils win tomorrow, they'll win in five or six.

If the Dodgers win tomorrow, this will go seven, at which point, you're looking at Moyer vs. Kuroda again, which while it would be in Philadelphia, it'd still have to favor the Dodgers.

Makes sense Manny is in L.A. His tough guy acting job went off well, while being held back by six guys. Fuckin' pussy. He'd fit in perfect on some phony angry guy roll.

Kinda figured that Jamie would get rocked last night. He pitches way too slow against their quick choppy bats. Kinda worried about Blanton tonight, but we shall see.

JRoll has to start hitting, and the rest of the team have to capitalize on RISP.

Love how half of those phony phony friggin' "fans" left the game before it was even over. The pan over the stadium happened once, and half the seats were empty. That would NEVER happen in Philly for a playoff game.

No one should panic about this loss. No one predicted that either team would sweep (except Manny.)
I said earlier that I was worried that Moyer would still struggle after his Milwaukee loss. This one was way worse. So the question is, does he get the ball again this post-season? Right now, I say no. I say, thank you Jamie for a terrific season, but 2 bad starts in the playoffs does not get you a third chance. Keep him around for long relief if need be, but otherwise, keep him off the mound.

There is absolutely no chance of them going to Happ in the rotation, nor should there be. You can't throw him into a potential Game 7 against the Dodgers, or an early game of the World Series when he's started a handful of games all season.

That would be one of the all-time panic moves, especially if Happ got lit up.

They're hitched to Moyer for better or worse. The Milwaukee game wasn't horrible. He got squeezed, and in the end he only gave up two runs.

This Dodger game was very bad. The Dodgers are a bad match-up for him all around. That said, you go to him if you have to go to him. There's no one else.

The only way I'd take Moyer out is if they start throwing Hamels and Myers on three days rest, and Charlie won't do that, nor should he....Hamels wouldn't be nearly as effective as he's been on short rest.

With all that being said, I think its time to talk trades for next year. The Phils need a starter and the Mets happen to be sitting a a diamond in the ruff starter. I say Heilman for Rollins straight up

Hamels and Myers can pitch on short rest, Myers especially. I'd put them out there on 3 days rest but put them on a short leash, no more than 5 innings. our bullpen can support that to finish out this series. then they'd get a day or 2 before the ws to recover. what effect that might have on the ws will depend on whom we'd face if we got there. Moyer probably matches up better against Tampa than Boston. Tampa has a lot of eager young guys who swing a lot, but Boston would be more patient against him.

Per Charlie and Hamels all year, he cannot pitch on a short rest.

If a game 7 situation presented itself don't you think they would go with Blanton i/o Moyer?

They actually could go with Blanton, on regular rest since there's two days off between Game 4 and Game 7.

I don't know...that's a tough call. Let's see how Blanton does tonight.

Well, it's a non-factor in the remainder of this series. Hamels and Myers wouldn't even be on three days rest for a Game 7.

At this point, you'd have to reshuffle the rotation for the series, to skip Moyer's turn.

I would consider pitching Myers on three days.

I wouldn't throw Hamels unless it's an elimination game...he was complaining in September of fatigue. He's thrown two gems getting full rest so far this playoffs. I wouldn't screw with it unless you'd absolutely have to.

Maybe for the series, you could go:
-Myers
-Hamels
-Blanton
-Myers (short rest)
-Hamels
-Blanton
-Myers

But I'd actually prefer to give Moyer another shot....especially if it's the Rays.

Let's do this.

Blanton missed his spot on the pitch to Loney by about a foot, but otherwise looked like he had pretty good stuff to start.

I'll take 2-1 after one.

Also, I like the call to intentionally walk Manny in the 1st, despite Joe Buck's annoying protests. Any time there's a base open, put Manny on.

Joe Buck is a d bag, especially a few years ago when the Cardinals won - he was creaming his shorts the entire time but still trying to be objective.

I doubt I get any sympathy in this thread, but this home plate ump sucks. The Dodgers have been screwed on 2 crucial strike calls that were no where near the strike zone.

I think keeping that balance is what gives him such opposite field power.

He just told Rosenthal "Yeah, I swing for the fences every time I bat."

Despite the utter pain and anger I am experiencing right now, I have to agree. If my team has to go down, why not to a fat 40 year old who has bounced around the league for 14 years and finally gets to send one yard to basically send your team packing for the world series, seriously. When he got back to the dugout and showed his emotions, I was in to this guy. Nice story, nice win, great game.
Now that this is all but over, I really would like to see Moyer win the series for the Phils after that beating he took yesterday. Don't know why, but I felt for the guy last night.
Now its off to mending the fences with the wife for over the top outbursts during this fiasco of a game.

I'm in the same boat. I can sell one game to pay for my season tickets next year......... but I just can't do it.

I love Matt Stairs.

He just told Rosenthal "Yeah, I swing for the fences every time I bat."

“When you get that nice celebration coming into the dugout and you’re getting your ass hammered by guys — there’s no better feeling than to have that done.”- Matt Stairs

A body like Fez...and a mind like Fez.

I'd have to check, but I'm pretty sure it's either the 110 side along the first base line or the 130 side.

I've got Game 4 right now. Hoping to get an opportunity for the Phillies to buy Games 3 and 5.

But they wouldn't release info on it until they actually clinch.

Man, I'm extremely pumped for this game already.

This needs to be ended with Cole tonight.

I don't want to take any chances with Myers and Blanton possibly fucking this up, even though they've been ok so far.

Win this one, take some time off, set the rotation, and come back ready to go to work.

Hopefully Boston can prolong the ALCS a little bit (or win it), and screw up the rotation for whoever is coming out of the AL, although the last two nights don't seem to indicate that will happen.

Either way, the Phils need to lock this up.

He will if they get there.

Just may not be until Game 4.

Although I'd throw him Game 3. The more I think about, there's absolutely no way I would set the rotation where Joe Blanton is pitching a possible Game 7. You HAVE to go Moyer in any Game 7.

He's the one guy, Hamels and Myers included, that I could be 100% confident that he would not get rattled by the pressure of the situation.

I was mostly talking about I have no idea what to expect in terms of how the Phillies match up.

They've got one lefty starter in Kazmir, but he's been the shakiest of that staff to this point. Shields and Sonnastine are guys the Phillies can hang with.

Garza's the guy that looks untouchable.

Hamels and Moyer can actually probably hang with the Rays lineup.

Not sure about Myers and Blanton.

Only two people outside of Philadelphia, that I saw, picked the Phillies to win this series at all. Rob Neyer on ESPN, and the Dodger beat writer for the Orange County Register.

If the Rays win the ALCS, the national media will jump on their nuts like no one could imagine. If the Red Sox win, it'll be another 'team of destiny' bullshit mantra for them coming back from down 3-1.

Either way, the Phillies will once again get no love.

Although, Kruk was picking them to win the Series regardless of who they play, last night (I guess he learned his lesson from jumping on the Dodger bandwagon). But it IS just Kruk.

don't knock Kruk, he is a damn good analyst and can be prescient. and he's not a homer: he wouldn't pick the phils just because he used to play here.
you're right, the phils will get no love. that's fine, the play just great when they get no love. they'll earn that love though.

Hamels.

Matt Stairs as dh or jenkins?

Against right-handers, Dobbs as DH (except when Garza pitches, then I'd put Dobbs at 3B, and Stairs at DH).

Against left-handers, my guess is they'll use Bruntlett or Taguchi in LF, and Burrell as the DH.

Although, if they add Marson to the World Series roster, they could keep Burrell in LF, and use Coste as the DH.

The only other option is you drop Taguchi or Jenkins (or one of the pitchers like Happ) from the roster, add Marson, and then use Coste as the DH against lefties.

But I really don't see them using Coste unless they have a third catcher on the bench.

It'll probably be Taguchi.

But the plus side is, if it's the Rays, they only have one left-handed starter in Kazmir. So you end up using Taguchi once...maybe twice if it goes deep into the series.

To bad their lame website doesn't allow public postings.

This is a guy who wrote a column, titled Philly will be left in ruins (http://www.philly.com/philly/sports/phillies/20081010_Philly_will_be_left_in_ruins.html), and after taking shots at the physical city, with no real analysis, said the Phillies will lose.

Now as intimidating as Philly likes to think it is, could the Dodgers come up with one win in Game 6 or Game 7 to move on?

"If it comes down to that," Manager Joe Torre said, "we can get one more win."

So there you go, the Phillies lose again, but then what's new?

From all the predictions I've read, I'd have to say they were split down the middle....most going 6 or 7 games. I'm not so sure your Phils are quite the underdogs you make them out to be in the press. In my mind, they easily have a better team, more experience, better overall pitching and the Dodgers have Manny.

there were many reporters that picked the phils, just not in 5 games. I know I saw a few (la reporters) that had picked the Dodgers in 5.

Pitching Probables:

Game 1 - Cole Hamels vs. James Shields
Game 2 - Brett Myers vs. Scott Kazmir
Game 3 - Jamie Moyer vs. Matt Garza
Game 4 - Joe Blanton vs. Andy Sonnastine

If they get another big Game 1 out of Cole, the Phils will be in good shape.

I like getting Garza and Sonnastine on the road. If pitching in Citizens Bank Park rattled both Derek Lowe and Chad Billingsley (which both admitted after the fact), it should help in tagging Garza and Sonnastine.

The only potential change I could see on the Phillies end is moving Moyer up to Game 2, and pitching Myers at home for Game 3, where he pitches better.

they mentioned that charlie is going back to VA to attend his mother's funeral. is the rest of the team going also? I think that would be the thing to do unless the Manuel family specifically wanted to keep it family-only.

He's supposedly a pretty private guy. I imagine he'll go by himself.

For a lot of teams, yes.

For the Phillies, not so much.

There's no rhythm to their offense. They just hack, strikeout, and hit home runs.

And all their pitchers seem to do better on extended rest, especially Hamels.

So I've had the Phillies season ticket package for the past few years, along with a few friends. First few years I sat with a chick friend of mine. Last few I've moved away from sitting next to holes, and chillin' with my buddies in our own seats. I like watching the game, not listening to holes chatter.

So anyway. This one female friend of mine has four seats reserved with their ticket package. Three are occupied, one is a floater for whoever wants to come to the game. This fuckin' broad moved to New York about two months ago, met some Yankees fan, and now this asshole girl wants to bring this NY fuckin' Yankees fan to Game 4 and 5 at the Bank. If she's going to do that, drop some hints like

True.

But, like Geno says, this chick knows plenty of people, pretty well, who would give their left testicle to be there.

I've always hated when a guy I know would have some tickets to a pretty big event like this, and give one to his chick, who could not care less, at the expense of one of his friends who would really want to go.

And it's doublely bad if they take their chick at the expense of a relative, like someone's dad, or uncle, or grandfather, or what.

This is the reverse. The chick has a new flavor of the month, and she drops the ticket on someone who probably couldn't care any less, other than the novelty of going to a World Series.

Ok Gentlemen and Gentlewomen. We have three days to discuss the Phils vs. Rays. Let's get to it.

K.C.
10-19-2008, 08:00 PM
I think we have the match up we want.

Don't get me wrong, the Rays are fantastic, but the bullpen, outside of Price, has looked a little shaky, they only have one left-handed starter in Kazmir, who will only throw five or six innings, and I think the Phillies' left-handed bats match up well with the Rays' righties.

Plus, this team will do infinitely better playing up to four in the TropDome, than at Fenway.

Just like the last two series, if Hamels can get Game 1, I think it all falls in to place.

I don't think Shields will pitch until Game 2.

Probably go:

Hamels vs. Kazmir
Myers vs. Shields
Moyer vs. Garza
Blanton vs. Sonnastine

I agree, this is the matchup I wanted. I am of the opinion that if you want to be the best, you have to beat the best. the rays were the best all season. if they had choked last night, the sox would have had all this momentum because of their history of comebacks, and would have been harder to beat than they should be. Plus, the Sox almost knocked the rays out, proving that they are beatable. that could make the rays a little less aggressive when they play the phils; they won't want to make the same mistakes against us that they did against the sox. playing not to lost is not the same as playing to win.
the rays have been unbelievable all year, and are going to be a very tough team to beat. but I am picking the Phillies in 6.

I'm not saying the Phillies can't win it, but let's not pretend like the Phillies and Red Sox are on equal footing.

Why, exactly?

Phillies had the best bullpen in baseball, and by far, the best bullpen this postseason. I'd give a slight edge to the Phillies offensively, too.

Obviously, the Sox have much better starting pitching depth (although Hamels may be the best single pitcher in a matchup).

Phils/Sox series would have been pretty even.

If the Sox had a healthy Beckett and a healthy Lowell, you'd give the edge to them, but that's not what they're playing with this postseason.

TheMojoPin
10-20-2008, 10:21 AM
The Phillies have more pop, but are MUCH streakier and with shittier defense ad a much worse pitching rotation. Both Sox teams had much better starting pitching than what the Phillies have besides Hamels and the Rays clobbered them. The Phillies basically only trump the Red Sox with their bullpen, and even there not by much. It's a fallacy to point out the Red Sox almost coming back on the Rays and say that means that the Rays can automatically be "beat" by the Phillies. The Phillies' WS victory completely rests on their big bats not being in an off streak.

Why are we discussing a team that is no longer in it, and will not be the same team it was this year next year?

Because someone brought up the Red Sox almost beating the Rays as a sign that the Rays can be beat by the Phillies.

The Rays CAN be beat by the Phillies, but comparing the Red Sox to the Phillies isn't too good an idea.

K.C.
10-20-2008, 10:29 AM

I'd agree, except I wouldn't say 'much worse'

Myers is capable of some ridiculously good starts when he's on. Moyer's solid.

The Phillies' WS victory completely rests on their big bats not being in an off streak

I would never say that the Rays can be beat because the Sox almost came back.

The Rays can be beat, because the Phillies matchup well.

The Phillies will throw two left-handed changeup based pitchers (one who arguably has the best changeup in baseball) in four of the seven games of this series.

The Rays are a pretty free-swinging team, which makes that a good matchup. Hamels, and especially Moyer, also have two of the best pickoff moves in baseball (because they are balks...even I can admit that), to kind of hamper their running game.

On the flip side, almost everyone on the Rays throws gas. The Phillies are a hard fastball hitting team.

It really plays to their strengths.

The one thing that scares me about Tampa is Price coming out of the bullpen late to face Utley and Howard.

Boston would have been a little more difficult, because I think Dice-K pitches similar to the way Kuroda does in that he throws a lot of different variations of breaking pitches.

Plus, if Wakefield had the good knuckler, he could quite possibly strike out 20 against the Phillies.

That said, either matchup, I think the Phillies have a good shot. They're probably, on paper, a slight underdog to Boston on matchups.

I'd say it's a pick 'em against the Rays.

Another thing that no one's talked about yet, is stadiums.

The TropDome isn't much of a home field advantage, other than the stupid cowbells. The stadium plays pretty even, it's climate controlled...maybe the turf gives someone like a Howard a little trouble on defense.

I'm not sure anyone on this Rays team has ever pitched in CBP, though.

I'm seen many a great pitcher let that park get in their head. Smoltz still bitches about it every chance he gets. Maddux is on record as hating that place. Both Lowe and Billingsley admitted afterwards that pitching there messed up their rhythm and selection.

I wonder how some of the young Rays pitchers will react, when they see how short those power alleys are.

Plus, it's likely to be in the 40s temperature wise.

Clay Condrey - Signed as a minor league free agent in 2005
Scott Eyre - Signed as a free agent in August 2008 after being released by the Chicago Cubs

Bottom line is the Phillies front office knows their shit.

Of the 25 man roster:
10 - Homegrown players (counting the Rule V selection of Victorino)
5 - Acquired by trade
3 - Signed by normal free agent circumstances
3 - Signed as minor league free agents (essentially plucking them from the trash heap)
2 - Signed after being non-tendered (essentially plucking them from the trash heap)
1 - Claimed off waivers (essentially plucking them from the trash heap)
1 - Signed as a Major League free agent mid-season (essentially plucking the from the trash heap)

22 of the 25 players on the roster were either developed in the system, acquired in exchanged for players developed in the system, or found in the bargain bin, after being passed over by the majority of, if not all, other 29 teams.

The three that they signed by normal free agency (Feliz, Jenkins, Taguchi) are arguably the three most expendable players on the roster.

Hey! A Rays fan talking shit! How cute! When did you become a Rays fan? Last month? Does your Rays hat still smell like new?

So, because you have been following losers for a long time somehow makes you a better person?

For all I can see it just means you can put up with the shit smell a lot better.

I've been a rays fan exactly....three years when I moved to the area from an area without a baseball team. And yeah, the hat does smell kind of new. Got it in February because it was a new design. Those green things were awful looking.

So, what was the phillies record against the varsity teams this year? 3-15?

This is almost as funny as when Marlins fans occasionally show up to talk smack when they finally wake up out of their drunken stupor after Hurricanes games to realize they have a baseball team in the playoffs.

So what did the Bucs outdraw the Rays by last night in Tampa? 3 to 1? 4 to 1???

Oh my god? You mean people like to be fans of good things? I'm sorry if your tastes run towards shit sandwiches, but that's no reason to take it out on the fans who like successful teams.

I'm sorry how many Hall of Famers do the Rays have?

Don't worry, though...I'm sure that THIS year will be the year that Greg Vaughn finally gets his due from Cooperstown.

It's fun to have you still ignore the arguments that the Phillies are simply an inferior team to the Rays, and pretty much any of the American League teams that were in contention this year.

Lets see, the Rays have been in existence for 10 years...Seems like the Phillies had just as many inducted as the Rays in that time period. Unless you count the Wade Boggs', Sparky Anderson and those who are really associated with other teams, which I don't.

Uh...no.

I laid out exactly why I think the Phillies are poised to win this series earlier in the thread.

3-15?

What game did Lidge blow spectacularly? Yeah, that's right, the all star game...against the Varsity team.

Sure, the Phillies might have had a good record against the ladies division of the national leauge, but when they have to play the actual men, they wilt like little girls.

Oh, I'm sorry, I laughed loudly that you posted an analysis that was

Howard>Pena.
et al.

I didn't know that qualifies as serious analysis. I think thinking like that was something that was relevant in "Could Superman beat up Thor" conversations, but not really in a team sport where there is no real direct comparison.

Not a big reader, I see.

Can't blame, you though. The fact that you live in Tampa and are one of the privileged few who are literate is a triumph in and of itself.

The 'position by position' thing was a joke. It's one of the hackiest thing baseball fans do.

But seeing as 'Rays Nation' came into existence all of about three hours ago, I wouldn't expect you to know that either.

Well, I gotta give you credit. That's longer then 99% of the douches in the stadium Sunday night.

I heard today something dumb. XM had a guy on talking up the "noise factor" in Tropicana Stadium. I had to laugh.

It was loud last night, but these Rays have never heard crowd noise like Phillies Phans can generate. And to those who say it was because of the way Veteran's Stadium was built, come on down to the Bank and hear how deafening it can be. We've drowned out the microphones of the broadcasters, and being an open, non-roofed field, that's impressive.
