I'm pretty stoked about going to the game tonight, and I regret not going last night.

That Burrell homerun sucked me back to the beginning of the season. That was his old thunder slap, totally awesome. Love having a DVR for those kinda moments.

Exciting times, yo.

As a Sox fan living in the Philly area, gotta say it's nice to see the Phils getting back into the groove when it counts. Best of luck in the playoffs. They deserve to do well.

most philly fans are sox fans? what kind of shit is that? screw the sox, I hope they go down in flames to tampa. then I hope tampa goes down in flames to us in the world series.
if the phillies don't win the pennant, i hope the cubs do, and then win the world series. not because I'm a cub fan or anything, I am just sickened unto death of hearing their century-long whining. I am glad that the red sox won it so they could stop their bambino curse whining. same reasoning for rooting for the cubs now (if the phillies don't make it.)

I disagree vehemently with that statement.

I hate the Red Sox infinitely more than I hate the Yankees.

Red Sox are #2 behind the Mets.

No, no, no!!

The Cubs cannot win.

Sure, everyone thought it was cute when the Red Sox FINALLY broke their curse. Then all of a sudden, that 'Red Sox Nation' bullshit creeps up the following year, and every douchebag that had a great uncle who once visited Boston claims they're a Red Sox fan by birthright.

And I absolutely loathe the fact that people (and I'm not blaming the real Sox fans, because they know their team and what the deal is...just the millions of frauds who jumped on the bandwagon) who act like Boston is this scrappy bunch of upstarts who vanquished the 'evil, greedy Yankees.'

They're the same goddamn team, with the same business philosophy!

And the Cubs will be equally as annoying if they win. Trust me.

because they don't whine. they are made of tougher stuff than the pussy cub fans.
i love wrigley field, and wrigleyville in Chicago. Been there many times. I love the bars around the ballpark, the bookstores, the way the neighborhood comes together around their team.
but I have no love for the team itself. I cannot abide the whining. also, I cannot bring myself to root for another national league team, being a lifelong (39 years) Phillies fan. if I lived in Chicago I am sure I would be a White Sox fan.

and what happened to the reformed brett myers? two shitty starts in a row in important games!
they are imploding, and the mets are winning. they look mentally beaten tonight. they need a spark. if howard hits another home run that starts the winning rally, he gets mvp. if not, he is the fucking goat tonight.

How will it be the same? What you just described is defined by the rivalry between the Yanks and the Red Sox. The Cubs have no such situation. The Cubs have never been propped up as a "scrappy bunch of upstarts." They're just the Cubs. By your logic, the Phillies winning woulod be just as insufferable since they're defined by being losers, too.

there is a difference between the cubs' being defined as losers and the phillies: the cubs are baseball's "loveable losers" whose fans embrace and coddle them no matter what. it don't work that way in philadelphia. the vitriol here is intense enough when they are winning, let alone when they are losing. we are sick of loving these guys only to have them shit on us with losing teams. so we pre-emptively shit on them. it's a dysfunctional relationship, to be sure, but make no mistake: they are not loveable losers. they will only be loveable when they hoist the world series trophy at city hall at the end of a parade.

and even then, they'd better fucking repeat next year.....

Everyone universally hates Phillies fans because they're already insufferable.

The Cubs are ripe breeding ground for the birth of annoying front-runner spin-off fanbase, similar to what happened after '04 with the Red Sox, because they are the lovable losers.

The "lovable loser" shit, which never really existed, went out he window 5 years ago. The fas here get pissed when the team and players sucked. The only reason that atmosphere lingered as long as it did was because the owners showed zero desire to improve the team through abetter farm system or through FA's for almost three decades, and even then it's not like people tolerated it. For most of the 70's, 80's and 90's the stadium was rarely full, not even close. And no real Cubs fan has ever "liked" losing, so go fuck yourself with that shit. We love our team, but we've never loved losing. That's a load of crap from someone just looking to be a dick. They didn't "coddle" the shitty teams and players...we just had no hope for anything else for decades.

easy, easy. I never said you liked losing. it's just that this unconditional love cubs fans show for the team is incomprehensible to me as a phillies fan. if the phillies are out of it in August, as they have been many many many times in my life, I turn them off. but a few years ago I went to a Phillies/cubs game in Philadelphia, and happened to sit next to a cub fan. it was september, the cubs were way out of it, and yet this guy was living and dying with every pitch. that to me is the embodiment of the cubs fan. that would not happen here.

And Boss, don't let your bitterness shine through just because you picked the wrong Philadelphia team.

If you had gone Phillies and Giants instead of Eagles and Mets, you'd have much less stress these days.

There's still time...I'll give you until the last game of the regular season to renounce the Mets and walk the path of light.

Bandwagon closes after Sept. 28th, though.

Well, everyone won tonight, so the magic number stays at three.

This realy is shaping up to be a redeux of last year. Phils finish at home with Washington, Mets finish at Shea with Florida.

Only difference is Milwaukee in the mix.

I think if the Phils can beat Lannan tomorrow, they'll be home free. Lannan's the best pitcher Washington can throw out there, and Blanton's the weak link of the Phillies rotation.

If they grab the game tomorrow, everything should be good.

So Moyer needs to lock this down tomorrow

I'd be thrilled to see a lineup on Sunday that looks like:
1) RF - Taguchi
2) SS - Bruntlett
3) LF - Stairs
4) CF - Golson
5) 1B - Dobbs
6) 2B - Iguchi
7) 3B - Cervenaek
8) C - Marson
9) SP - Happ

Save Hamels for Game 1 of the DS.

It would also be helpful if the Mets won tomorrow. That way the Brewers burn Sabathia to clinch on Sunday, so the Phils would only face him once.

If not Cole, I'm happy with Moyer. He's been great this year. Overall, Cole's record is better, but it always seemed the offense slacked off when Cole is on the mound, like they keep expecting him to pitch a perfect game.

Moyer's been stable, and the offense always seemed to back him up with tons of potatoes.

Great game, great finish. I kept fucking screaming at McCarver to shut up about Lidge never blowing a save this season, I thought for sure he was jinxing him.

In other news, my cousin and I voted Shane Victorino the most likely to be a raging maniac if you went drinking with him. Utley would be a massive bore, Howard and Rollins would be fun, but Victorino looks like he would half the bar laughing one second and have you in a knife fight the next.

Holy shit, wasn't that terrible? They stated it over and over, they flashed the graphic under him while saying it again, they stated that he hasn't lost a save since September 23, 2007. Everyone I was watching it with was superstitious, and boy was it made much more tense cuz of that.

I would guess the Brewers will throw Yovani Gallardo in Game 1 and CC in Game 2.

I'd gladly take Gallardo in game one.

I think it'd be pretty crazy to throw him in that situation when he's only one start back from a huge layoff.

Bush threw pretty well against the Phils last time the two teams played each other.

Sabathia will go Game 2 and Game 5. That's pretty much a guarantee.

Sheets is supposedly done for the year, so the Brewers would probably go:

-Gallardo
-Sabathia (short rest)
-Bush
-Suppan or Gallardo (short rest)
-Sabathia

Phils will probably go
-Hamels
-Myers
-Moyer
-Hamels (short rest)

the big unknown is obviously CC Sabbathia. We have not faced him this year. He is starting Game 2 against Myers, so the question is, which Myers will show up: pre-minor league send-down Myers, post-minor-league-send down Myers, or Myers of the last 2 starts which resembled pre-minor-league-send-down Myers?
If our offense does what it is capable of, I think we have a very good chance of winning in 4.

Sabathia is a great pitcher, but his numbers with the Brewers benefited heavily from how the schedule happened to fall and he ended up with almost all of his starts against crappy teams or average ones. The two times he wen up againt the Cubs starters, they got to him. I think a genuinely good team like the Phillies have a really good chance of doing the same, especially with him going on short rest yet again.

I'm worried about which team we will face. We're .500 against the Dodgers this year, and all our wins are at in our park. We were 4 out of 7 with the Cubs, with 2 of them in Wrigley.

Sabathia would actually pitch on full rest for Game 5. There's a day or two off between Game 4 and Game 5.

I think regardless of what the Phillies do tomorrow, they should have the edge against Bush and Suppan in Game 3 and Game 4.

So realistically, they should be able to close it out in four.

But another thing that has to be decided is whether Charlie would throw Blanton in Game 4, and save Hamels for a potential Game 5 against Sabathia, or would he throw Hamels on three days rest in Game 4 (which I would assume he would if the Phils are down 2-1....if they're up 2-1, though, it's a hard call).

I think a lot of that will depend on how well Myers pitches, because it would be either Myers or Hamels that pitches Game 5. No one else would be on the right rest.

It's a no-brainer for me. IMO, if I were Charlie, I'd be getting Blanton ready for a game 5. He's done well for us, and he's proven to be a winner against Milwaukee.

But since the bullpen didn't pitch tonight, that's still the unknown factor for me. Even pulling Cole for Brad after 8 innings made me nervous.

Hypothetical Question to mull between now and the start of Game 2:

So the Phillies more than likely will not re-sign Pat Burrell for next season. Manny Ramirez is too expensive. Greg Golson is not ready.

They could theoretically piece together left-field next season by starting Jenkins or Stairs against righties, and signing someone like Juan Rivera, Emil Brown, Jerry Hairston Jr, Gape Kapler, or Fernando Tatis to play against lefties.

But other than that, there's no real other answer available on the market. It's just a really bad class for right-handed outfielders.

Which is why I raise this possibility.

Andruw Jones is a blight upon human existence. He signed his deal with the Dodgers and basically pulled a Mo Vaughn.

But, he only has one year left on his deal at 15 mil.

As pathetic a situation as that's been, he's not THAT far removed from being a killing machine at the plate.

The Dodgers would give their left testicle to flat out dump him, as they want to resign Manny, and play Kemp and Ethier everyday next season.

But in lieu of a left testicle, they'd probably just send cash with Andruw for someone, anyone to take him.

So say if the Dodgers paid half the tab, and you could get him in his free agent year for around 7.5 mil on the books next season, do you take a shot at him as a reclaimation project?

If you got just half of what he used to be, it'd be worth it.

On the other hand, it's very possible he's completely done, and/or has given up on baseball.

I think it's worth exploring, especially if the Dodgers will give some cash just to dump him. At worst, you never play him and he walks at the end of the year.

I think that if the Phillies do not re-sign Burrell, they should take his salary and try to get CC Sabathia. We have an embarrassment of riches when it comes to the outfield. I don't think we spend that kind of money for one year of andruw jones. We need to counter the mets' acquisition of santana. Yes, Burrell's offense will be missed, especially against the dratted mets, but if we got Sabathia then it would be worth it.

-What can you say about Vic....the definition of clutch.

Come on, Moyer! Let's sweep this thing!

Yeah, the pitch count cheering was amazing. I love it when the whole fucking crowd realizes the implications of making a guy like CC throw so much, then get into his head to have it turn our way.

The crowd was amazing. I listened to the 7th inning on XM, and got to watch the final two innings at home. XM really drew me into the game, I could almost see the action in my head.

It'll be interesting to tune into The Herd tomorrow. Thursday morning he totally ignored Cole Hamels and the Phillies-which was the sporting news' story of the day- during his show intro, instead gloating about the Cubs loss and kissing Manny Ramirez's ass.

Let's see if he can find another reason Friday morning to keep dissing the Phils, especially with CC's collapse and Victorino hitting the club's first post-season grand slam ever.

She doesn't have the mystical powers of a Kate Smith.

I'm disappointed in Ronnie B not having the Phils' back. Sounds like he's on the Cubbies bandwagon.

Remember the roots, Ronnie B!

If you go back and listen Ronnie B's prediction was the Cubs go all the way to the NLCS...................and get swept by the Phillies.

I remember laughing when he said, "No matter how much Id like to see them there, I can never go against Philly, Anyone else, and Ill root for the Cubs:"

By the way, I was at the game tonight and it was UNBELIEVABLE.

Nah. I thought the towels were great, but I'd prefer thunder sticks. I wish they would get rid of the "EVERYBODY CLAP YO' HANDS!" though.

It was the first grand slam in Phillies postseason history. It was the first grand slam in the history of Shane Victorino's lifetime. And it was the second salami ever surrendered by C.C. -- in a career in which he has faced more than 7,000 hitters. Before last night, Sabathia had faced 58 pitchers in his career. They'd gone 4-for-49 against him, with 28 strikeouts and one walk. Not one of those pitchers had ever extended an-bat against him beyond seven pitches.

I was there.

Dodgers will throw all righties, I think. Utley and Howard can hit guys like Lowe and Billingsley.

Don't be too sure. The Dodgers didn't beat the Cubs, the Cubs beat themselves. They played like the Keystone Kops, from the games that I saw.
The Dodgers are good, they will give the Phillies a good test. Neither team will sweep, but I definitely see the Phillies coming out on top. Probably go to 6 or 7 games.

Tons of right-handed pitching from the Dodgers favor the Phils. Home field advantage favors the Phils.

Manny Ramirez batted .240 with 1 homerun in 8 games faced against the Phils. Non-factor, so the only worry would be the "post-season" Manny.

The L.A. Dodgers as a WHOLE batted an average of .270 with 7 homeruns, 77 total runs.
The Phillies as a WHOLE batted an average of .237 with 9 homeruns, 62 total runs.

Balanced. The Phils will have to stop shitting the bed with RISP. The top of the line-up has to start giving some support to the great pitching we have received so far.

I expect a great series with great pitching match-ups, low scoring games.

Dunno how anyone can just come in here and say "phils are gonna get killed". Blind hostility with no facts to back em up, much like in the schoolyard.

I get the feeling that almost everyone nationally will be picking the Dodgers, because they're praying for that Torre/Manny vs. Boston matchup.

So you'll hear a lot of blanket "The Dodgers are just so hot with Manny right now" statements.

I'd give the Phils a slight edge on paper. But just like last series, I think everything slots into place if Hamels gets Game 1 again.

I like the Hamels vs. Lowe matchup, despite Lowe pitching fantastic.

Actually, with the reported asking price for Manny being 5yrs/$75 million, it would not shock me if the Phillies are in on him this offseason.

I'm sure that'll come down to 4yrs and a 5th year option (no one will give him five), but it'd come out to about $15 million per year, which is palatable for the Phils.

I could see them signing Manny, signing Moyer, and calling it an offseason.

Not that I wouldn't want Manny's bat, and I could put up with Manny being Manny as long as he performed, but if we don't re-sign Burrell, then it better be because we got a HUGE starting pitcher, like Sabathia.

Traffic Alert: I-95 Southbound Near Center City

Traffic was bumper-to-bumper on I-95 southbound as two center lanes were closed by Pennsylvania state police on Thursday morning.

A large piece of cement broke loose near an expansion joint, which left a hole in the middle of the span between Girard Avenue and the Vine Street Expressway. Traffic was backed up past the Betsy Ross Bridge.

Penndot crews and inspectors rushed to inspect the damage. Penndot spokesman Gene Blaum said a short time later that the road deck was not compromised and a repair would take about four hours -- plenty of time to reopen the highway for the crush of traffic expected for Thursday night's Phillies game in South Philadelphia.

Have fun tonight, gentleman. You deserve to enjoy it. The only reason I don't mind seeing Philly win is cuz I put a bit of money on them to win the NL and series. There's always a silver lining.

I hate to say it, but that second pitch (I think it was a slider) pitched to Ryan was a strike. Since the playoffs, the umps have really tightened up the strike zone. I think that hurts our pitchers, especially Moyers then it does the LA bullpen.

As long as we all know it's all in fun. I say it all in jest, with the understanding that this could all be turned around on a few pitches and hits.

I know this is the Phillies thread, but wtf was Torre thinking leaving Lowe in the game! He came apart at the seams in the fifth, then at a minimum after the first bomb pull him.

K.C.
10-09-2008, 08:17 PM
Ok, I think I'm calm.

Hamels has been unshakeable in his two starts. A lot of guys would have gotten blown up quickly (including the Phils' own Brett Myers) on the Manny 'should have been a HR if it was hit to any other spot in that ballpark' hit, but he settled in and got stronger as the game went on.

The Phillies offense was dreadful, but Victorino made Furcal rush that throw that lead to the error, and almost immediately, you could see Lowe start elevating his sinker after that, and Utley crushed one, and Burrell another.

Story of the postseason so far...Phillies are garbage on offense for eight innings of a game...they pick one where they deliver that knock out punch.

If Crazy Man Myers can get the game tomorrow, it'll be awesome. Billingsley is tough, but the Phils did rough him up earlier this year.

Can't wait for tomorrow...

The section I was sitting in was great except for one whacked out Dodgers fan who was dropping the F bomb in little kids faces, and running up and down the aisle until we took the lead. Everybody showed a lot of restraint, and the worst he got was a talking to from the attendant. As loud as he was, even when they were losing, I feel bad for him once he got outside the stadium. I'm hoping nothing bad happened, but it wasn't looking good for him.

Hell of a goddamn game tonight. It was pretty tense and quiet up until the point when Hamels got his pitch in the 5th. Then it just went nuts. Amazing atmosphere from then on. I was glad I got to bring my father to his first playoff game and it was a win.

With how Burrell is hitting, they are gonna start pitching to Howard a little more. What a threat our lineup can be.

I'll be up there again tomorrow night also. Can't wait to go back!

GO PHILS!

It was eerily quiet until then...Phil's fans get really thrown by a first inning run, I guess. Same thing happened in Game 2 of the NLDS until Myers had that great at bat.

Yea, I was at both games. I agree it was eerie. Lot of us are apprehensive of this "success" thing.

Myers has 4 hits ALL year, and 2 RBI today alreday. As a Dodger fan this might be the most painful kick to the nutts ever. He has accounted for half of their freaking runs! Great for you guys.

Kuroda is going to be IMO, our toughest opponent so far. He beat us last time we faced him (in LA) and he got 7 Ks, O BBs, and we only got one run off of him.

2 things worry me for the next game: Jamie Moyer, who looked shaky as hell in his last start against Milwaukee (our only loss in that series) and Howard's do-nothingness at the plate. The fact that that game will be in LA doesn't help either.

It's not really Moyer, it's the erratic strike zone that gets me. Moyer pitches on the edge, and the plate umps aren't calling them as strikes. This is bad for Moyer, he'll have to pitch more over the plate, and his slow speed will have LA swinging away, and with Howard not doing much, Sunday doesn't look good for us.

This team is playing some ridiculously good defense, but more importantly, just capitalizing on almost every mistake the other team makes.

I want this to end in LA, but at the very least the Phillies just need to take one out there.

And I have to give some credit to some of the other local teams. After the game, both the Sixers and Phantoms were offering anyone who went to the game tonight the opportunity to walk across to the Wachovia Center and/or Spectrum and catch the Sixers preseason game, or the Phantoms game for free.

So we walked over and caught the last period and a half of the Phantoms after the game for free. Great way to beat the traffic.

I hadn't been in the Spectrum for a game in years. I'm going to miss the place...brought back a lot of good memories.
