This is one of the few times I can honestly say I have no f'n clue how the Phillies won.

The Mets should have blew Happ up in the 5th.

That said, I saw enough in Happ, that I'd like to see him get a few more starts. He has ok stuff, but didn't seem to have a lot of control. I did like see him talking pitching grips with Jamie Moyer in the dugout for the next two-to-three innings after he got taken out. Moyer's done wonders for Hamels and Kendrick as a teacher.

Anyway, I almost feel bad for Santana. 2 ERs in 8 innings, and Mets fans are killing him tonight. You can't ask for much more from the guy...that offense blows. Easley, Castro, Chavez, and Aguila shouldn't be anywhere near a starting eight.

When half the lineup can't hit, there's going to be a lot of nights like tonight.

It has actually been scientifically proven that it is impossible for the losing-est team in baseball history and their fans to feel superior to any form of life on the planet.

The studey is pending as to whether or not this extends to alien forms of life discovered in the future. But it probably does.

Let's see...the Cubs are actually the 2nd winning-est team in baseball, closing in on 1st...have 2 WS to the Phillies' 1...and 16 pennants to the Phillies' 5.

That's not exactly a heaping dose of anything superior. Awwww, you guys won your 1 WS in 1980? Congrats. You're still the worst baseball team ever.

A large percentage of your team's winning was done before you were born.

A LARGE percentage of my team's losing was done before I was born (see years 1920-1950)

Therefore I don't feel so bad about the pre-WWII days...maybe I should put on my Grover Cleveland Alexander jersey, though, and ponder them.

One of the things that concerns me watching this game, is that Oliver Perez hasn't looked particularly great, he's a good front-runner, and if the Mets can hang two or three runs on the Phillies in the next couple innings, the Phillies hitters will start pressing, and hacking, which is what makes Perez most effective.

I think they need to get on Ollie in the next couple innings.

It's hard to knock Howard. For however bad he looks at the plate from time to time, the guy's still hitting around .333 with RISP.

He hits when it counts.

Rollins is the guy that's killing them right now offensively. He's been struggling big time, and he's not even having good at bats. I don't really know what to make of it. I imagine he'll snap out of it soon enough, but who knows.

They need to find a way to get SOMETHING out of Jenkins and Ruiz, too. Jenkins was a bad signing, plain and simple. They panicked, because they weren't confident in Werth, and now Werth is playing everyday, and Jenkins is essentially useless. He's not even hitting righties well right now.

Ruiz has been dreadful, but he's had some better at bats lately, so I'm a little optimistic about him getting hot for a little bit.

Charlie and Milt Thompson have supposedly been working with both guys. Let's see what the 'hitting gurus' can do.

KingGeno

Howard swung at a picth that was 3 feet and down off the plate. That isn't a bad eye. That is just a lazy fucking non-caring swing. You can tell by his "spin around" follow-through afterwards, and him not even leaning towards the ball. Just stands up like a statue. He has been doing it a lot recently, and it is just lazy lazy baseball from him. He shows not a care in the world, if you actually read and watch him during the game. (not saying you don't, but I see it)

I mentioned as the season that Feliz will help out a lot if he starts to heat up. He has, and it has been helping. He is a very good defensive player too.

I agree 100% about Jenkins and Ruiz. Both are just killing us. Coste hasn't been hitting that great either, and I am unsure who is calling the better games nowadays.

Something is up with Rollins though. Ever since he got back from his mini-injury vaca, he hasn't done shit and appears not to care the least. I hope you saw the play I mentioned that occured on Saturday. Man on second, ball hit between short and second, Jimmy COULD have and should have slid to get the ball, but he barely bent over to glove it. THat's NOT how you play baseball, when a run threat is imminent. He is playing asshole baseball. Think he should be benched for being a douche. Is he having a fall-out with the team? Who knows.\

Sorry for the broken grammar. I am pissed off about these lazy bastards, and being a season ticket holder it angers me when seeing them bum.

I'm not going to pretend this entire series hasn't been akin to a kick in the teeth.

When you have a chance to win all four games late an only pull one, it's quite aggravating.

They're kind of showing where they miss Aaron Rowand right now, both offensively, and in that leadership role.

Rollins is a good catalyst and leader when he's playing well, but when he's not swinging the bat, you hardly notice him most nights.

At least that's the way it's been this year.

Someone needs to step up. Burrell seems the most likely guy, to me, to light a fire under this team.

With IronPigs, Myers turns in a solid outing

By Kate Fagan

Inquirer Staff Writer
ALLENTOWN - It's been a while since Brett Myers heard cheers.

But when Myers walked from the mound in the eighth inning, that's exactly what he received from the fans at Coca-Cola Park.

Myers lifted his hat in acknowledgment.

The Brett Myers rehabilitation project continued last night in Lehigh Valley.

A day after the Phillies signed closer Brad Lidge to a three-year, $37.5 million contract extension, Myers made his second minor-league start, pitching a solid 71/3 innings and earning the win as the IronPigs came from behind to beat the Louisville Bats, 4-3.

Myers' line: 114 pitches, 73 for strikes, seven hits, three runs, two earned, six strikeouts, two walks, and one hit batsman.

After the game, Myers said this start was "a heck of a lot better" than his first.

Myers appeared to regain his competitive mojo when Lehigh Valley scored four runs in the sixth, putting him in line for a win. He struck out the side in the seventh.

"I definitely saw some swagger, some presence," said IronPigs pitching coach Rod Nichols, who worked with Myers in Myers' younger years.

"I felt like things clicked a little bit," Myers said. "Little click here and there. My next start will tell me a lot."

Myers will next pitch on Saturday after he is reassigned to Reading.

Myers, who spent last season as the Phils' closer, said earlier this week he believed his big-league future was in the bullpen.

But the Phillies haven't minced words: Myers needs to be a starter.

When the club optioned Myers, its opening-day starter, to Lehigh Valley a week ago, his record was 3-9 with a 5.84 ERA in 17 games.

After last night's game, Myers said it's clear what the Phillies want.

"I'm happy for Brad [Lidge]," Myers said. "I'm down here to get ready as a starter."

Against Louisville, Myers worked his fastball.

"I need that pitch," Myers said.

Myers said he threw about 60 to 70 percent fastballs last night, as opposed to 50 percent in his first minor-league outing.

Nichols said Myers' speed ranged from 89 to 94 m.p.h.

The Bats scored a run in the second on three soft singles, and two runs, one earned, in the sixth.

About three hours before the game, Myers spent 45 minutes in the bullpen with Nichols reviewing mechanics with two younger pitchers.

"That makes him apply those things to his own pitching," Nichols said.

After his July 2 start, Myers said he believed Nichols could "find the smallest things nobody else could find."

Nichols said it's not necessarily a specific mechanical problem that Myers needs to fix but the confidence that comes from returning to basics.

When asked if he hoped to be back with the Phillies when the all-star break ended, Myers said, "Hoping? I'm planning on it. No hope about it."

He's our best trade option right now, much to the dismay of many Phillies fans. Don't wanna see him go, but I don't see who else the Phils could offer. Their farm system isn't proven yet.

The Phils were heavily interested in picking up some Grade A pitching, but the A's traded Pitcher Rich Harden to the Cubs (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=3478902) and the Brewers picked up C.C. Sabathia (http://www.jsonline.com/story/index.aspx?id=769956). There are some good pitchers still out there, but who is really worth trading for?

I liked what I saw too. If he can nail down a wicked fastball and a curveball, he could be our closer when Lidge is off.

I'm not sure if I want him as a reliever or a setup yet. But it's only one game, so I'm just reacting to what I saw.

Phillies assistant general manager Mike Arbuckle shot down a published report that suggested Brett Myers has requested a trade.

Former Phillies closer Ricky Bottalico, now a television analyst for the Lehigh Valley IronPigs, was quoted in the story, saying, "I know for a fact that he wants to be traded. Brett wants to be a closer, and he's not closing in Philadelphia. He's banking on getting outta there. You know it as well as I do that he doesn't want to be with the Phillies anymore. He's made that perfectly clear." The story, which appeared in the Bucks County Courier Times, had a contained a denial from Myers and Phillies management.

Reading some different things, the word seems to be that Bedard is going to the Phillies, although a deal may not be completed until after the All-Star break.

The hang-ups are:
-Bedard is not pitching right now and will probably hit the DL, retroactively, until July 21st. Pat Gillick supposedly isn't too concerned with it, as it's believed to be a combination of minor things, and mostly a move to get him a little extra rest during the break, to make him a more attractive option
-Gillick will not give up a package similar to what the Mariners gave to the Orioles, to get him (Adam Jones, George Sherrill, Troy Patton). The Mariners will obviously start high, asking for Carrasco and Cardenas (or Donald). I would guess that Gillick's initial counter would be Bastardo and Cardenas. Ultimately, Gillick will try and get it done without giving Carrasco up, but that may be tough.

Because of those circumstances, it's not out of the question that St. Louis, or Los Angeles, or maybe even the Mets could backdoor this thing and pry him away.

But it appears, at this point, that Bedard will be a Phillie sometime before the All-Star break, and maybe before his next start.

I'm not crazy about the move, as I've said, but you can't argue with what he's done the last few years, two of which, were in the best offensive division in baseball.

I think if he just does his job, he'll be fine. If he starts bitching and complaining, and taking himself out of games again, this could blow up.

I think this is going to be a quiet trade deadline.

The 2 big deals have been done, and there are so many teams that "aren't out of it", so there wont be many sellers.

I wouldn't be shocked however, if the Braves pull the trigger on a Texieria trade considering he's asking for a base of 8/100+

Unlikely, but not shocking.

NEW YORK -- Desperately looking to upgrade their rotation, the Phillies are talking to the Blue Jays about right-handed pitcher A.J. Burnett.

It isn't known how far talks have progressed, but top Blue Jays executive Tony LaCava was spotted this week watching the Phillies' Double-A Reading team, an indication things are heating up.

The Toronto Globe and Mail reported that the Dodgers also were pursuing Burnett. However, it appears that talks with the Phillies may be more serious. Philadelphia is also reportedly eyeing Mariners left-hander Erik Bedard.

Burnett, 9-8 with a 5.23 ERA, has a complicated contract whereby he can opt out at year's end, which is the most likely scenario. However, should he falter badly or become injured, he can continue with a contract that is to pay him $24 million over the next two years, an option that could deter some teams from taking him. He also has a limited no-trade provision in his $55 million contract.

Burnett has said he would welcome a trade with "open arms'' to the Cubs, but their acquisition of Rich Harden from the A's seems to eliminate them as a potential suitor.

The Phillies have at least three good prospects at Reading -- catcher Lou Marson (.323), center fielder Greg Golson (.299) and pitcher Carlos Carrasco (5-7, 4.18).

The Phillies made a push for C.C. Sabathia but couldn't match the Brewers' stacked farm system and four-prospect offer, highlighted by top hitting prospect Matt LaPorta. Philadelphia's lead the NL East has been cut to 1½ games, thanks to a six-game winning streak by the New York Mets.

Phillies starters are only 31-31 with a 4.40 ERA, which is 10th best in the National League.

Interesting.

That conflicts with Will Carrol's latest column on BP. He says the Phils are out on Burnett because of health concerns.

Mill: Looking Around After

by Will Carroll

With two big trades in the book before the All-Star break, teams are scrambling a bit to make sure they’re at least in discussions for the guys they’re looking at. We’ve seen that being prepared and involved helped both the Brewers and Cubs in their pursuits. While I’d said that Jim Hendry would respond quickly to any CC Sabathia deal, I didn’t mean that he’d panic, just that he was already talking to at least two teams, probably three, about pitching. The deal for Rich Harden had been discussed for at least a week and likely longer with things coming together just before the Sabathia deal was finalized. So who else is available and who else is looking? Let’s look around the NL:

* The Phillies have been on the outside looking in, passing on Harden due to their assessment of his medical risk. They have the same concerns about both A.J. Burnett and Randy Wolf, which is tempering their pursuit of both despite a clear need in the rotation. Yet somehow it seems like they’re not quite as concerned about Erik Bedard, and sources say that Pat Gillick’s comfort level with both Lee Pelekoudas and the medical staff he knows from his days in Seattle is making this deal possible, though Gillick seems to want Bedard at a significant discount relative to what the Mariners paid for him in the offseason.

First of all, Boss left as a regular on his own accord. I didn't ask him to, or want him to leave. (Btw, he was just on the show this past week, which was greatly appreciated and fun, and has made a couple of other appearences since he left as a regular)

Secondly, I was neither jealous nor being egotistical...what I objected to was people like you, and you're couple of other buddies who came into the chat room to tell me how much I sucked on a weekly basis. I then told Boss what I thought of you tools and he objected to me calling his friends names, so he left...again, his decision. Btw, if I suck so bad in your opinion, why did you send me a friend request on MySpace? Of course, like the scorned bitch you seem to be, you have recinded.

And Boss can do these, or whatever other rants he wants to on the air at any time.

Like I'd be jealous of a handfull of guys who seemingly suck each other's e-dicks every chance they get.

Remember, this Phillies squad has always been a second-half team, too. If they hold true to their normal production of the last few years in the second half, they could make it difficult on anyone to catch them.

You almost have to assume the Mets will sweep their way into the break. It'll be interesting to see if the break cools them off or they roll through.

There was an article in one of the Philly papers today quoting an anonymous MLB scout claiming the Phils should just screw trading for starting pitching and bring up Carlos Carrasco now.

I wouldn't be opposed to it, but I don't think they'll do it.

They absolutely, positively, beyond a shadow of a doubt......canNOT let Adam Eaton make another start.

DFA him already. Fuck the contract, just pay him to go away. Take a cue from the Mariners with Richie Sexson.

Their rotation after the break should go:
Hamels
Moyer
Kendrick
Happ
Myers

Burnett does not make sense to me, and the Phillies keep changing their mind on Bedard.

I could see them making a run at Aaron Harang or Bronson Arroyo.

Otherwise, what you see is what you get. Pray that Myers is better, and hope Happ continues to pitch well. The Phils are a second half team, so the offense should produce most of the rest of the way.

Did I mention DO NOT bring back Eaton?

Good game today.

I didn't catch all of it, because I was watching the Futures Game on ESPN2.

As far as the Phils' prospects went, Carlos Carrasco had great stuff but was a little wild. Jason Donald was pretty impressive. Lou Marson didn't really do much. Greg Golson was awful.

Donald probably upped his stock a bit in terms of trade value. Carrasco definitely did, but I can't see the Phils trading him.

It'll be interesting to see if Donald gets named to the Olympic team. It'd be nice to have some Phils to root for in Beijing.

I like it a lot. Blanton's a good fit.

He's having a bit of a down year from last season, but having seen him pitch five or six times this year, he looks like a classic case of a guy who'd benefit from an NL jump, and he still has solid stuff, and is only 27.

Cardenas was a good prospect, but blocked by Utley.

They didn't give up Carrasco, Marson, or Donald, all of whom are arguably better prospects.

Bill Conlin is a senile curmudgeon.

Bill Conlin: Phillies need more than average Joe Blanton

By Bill Conlin
Philadelphia Daily News

Daily News Sports Columnist
WE HAVE had the obligatory first-half report cards. Then the Home Run Derby main event followed by an All-Star Game that only an insomniac remembers.

So here we are on July 18, ready to look ahead to major league baseball's second half.

Mother Nature and Father Time just have to stop meeting like this. The calendar is already screwed up enough, thanks to the Phillies having their traditional lousy April in what the calendar assured us was June and July.

And now this: A "second half" that is actually only 41 percent of the 162-game season, at least for teams, including the Phillies, that played 96 games prior to the All-Star break.

To paraphrase Yogi Berra, it really got late early this season.

But the Saharan sun seems a little less harsh today with Joe Blanton in the rotation. I'm not a big fan of the enormous former A's righthander. Nothing personal. But I think he uses his brute strength to overpower the baseball to the detriment of his poor mechanics. But if Joe can do a reasonable Kyle Lohse impersonation during this lopsided second half, then hats off to GM Pat Gillick. They got Blanton for nothing they will ever miss. Adrian Cardenas was blocked at second, his only certifiable position. Josh Outman is a Double A setup man and Matt Spencer is a throw-in outfielder.

If Blanton bombs, it was at the expense of very little. If he helps the Phils to the East title, Gillick is a genius.

The Phillies find themselves in the oppressive humidity and even more oppressive emptiness of Dolphin Stadium tonight, and thanks to the Mets' 10th straight victory, are in a tie for first place with the hated team from Flushing Meadows. The Marlins are tail walking a game-and-a-half back in what is now MLB's only three-team race.

Six road games against the Marlins and Mets . . . And next Wednesday, when Brett Myers is scheduled to emerge from his odyssey through Triple A, Double A and Class A with a start in Shea Stadium, the Eagles will be in training camp. And thousands will be making the daily run up the Northeast Extension to watch the NFL version of batting practice, despite gas more expensive per gallon than jug wine. It is a psychological milestone of significance, a weigh station where bandwagons are boarded and allegiances tested. If scattered chants of E-A-G-L-E-S - EAGLES! erupt at the Bank on the next homestand, you will not need the standings to inform you the Phillies are no longer in first place.

Myers is a huge piece of an unforeseen and unplanned for unraveling that has thrown a team on the cusp of an East Division runaway into a maelstrom of problems. The team that Nostradamus Rollins predicted will win 100 games is now on pace to win 88 - my gloomy forecast at the end of a spring training where Brad Lidge had not yet revealed himself as Superman.

Brett went to the hinterlands to rediscover his fastball and the confidence to throw it. Nobody seems to want to believe that Myers is no longer a power arm. He is a breaking-ball pitcher who must set up his still wicked 12-6 hammer with a two-seam, sinking fastball and the cutter that became an important arrow in his quiver last year.

His downward journey through the minors began with two starts for the Lehigh Valley IronPigs. Give Myers 2.5 acorns on a scale of 5. Next, he was shipped - by limo, one assumes - to Eastern League Reading, where he started against Akron. The first Double A hitter he faced since 2001, when he was 13-4 for the Phils' Double A affiliate, smoked a home run. What else was new? He was solid after that, striking out 10. Against Double A hitters, a big league Opening Day starter is supposed to be dominant.

Down and down he goes, round and round he goes . . . In a spin . . . Loving the groove he's in . . .

The Old Brett Magic will surface tonight halfway down the Florida Peninsula from his Jacksonville home. He will make his fourth and final Psy-Op start in Brevard County, home of Cape Canaveral and the Manatees, a Class A Reds farm team. Having been an IronPig and a Reading Phil, Brett will now wear a Clearwater Threshers roadie, angry shark logo and all. As were Lehigh Valley and Reading (which has climbed out of the cellar since Brett's visit), Clearwater is in last place.

And look, Pat, Ruben, Mike and Charlie, if you think Myers needs to pitch at an even lower level so he can return to The Show feeling really good about himself, I can offer him a start next week for the South Jersey semipro team I sponsor. He can have his pick of any number, as long as it is 44 - the only one we have in his size - ice in the Gatorade, wooden bats to shatter and a mound with the shin-deep landing holes packed with clay.

This Phillies team was assembled with zero tolerance for adversity. There are no expansion joints to absorb an off-year by Jimmy Rollins, major injuries or the arrows whizzed their way during the long season. With Myers away and Adam Eaton harder to watch than an Andy Reid press conference, there is no longer enough pitching to fight off the resuscitated Mets. The swagger we hate is back. Tug McGraw coined "You Gotta Believe." Suddenly, these guys appear to have enough talent to back up the slogans and body language.

The enormity of not digging a little deeper to sign Lohse has become a Himalayan backdrop with Charlie Manuel getting into the sixth inning with a lead proving more and more difficult, thanks to a lineup that is strikeout prone, speed challenged and often more clutchless than the Venus de Milo.

I'd like to send you into the second 41 percent half of the season with a hearty cheer and the same surge of optimism that impelled me to rate this flawed team better than the benchmark 1977 Phillies. And I feel a little more bullish than I did this time yesterday.

But the best I can give you - altogether now - is a Sis, Boom, Bah, Humbug. *

He's right that the Phillies need Myers back in addition to Blanton, but honestly, I can't remember the last time he actually liked a move they made.

Ever since the Phillies kicked fat boy out of the MLB scout section three or four years back, and told him if he was going to sit in the stands, to sit with the crowd, I think every column he's written has been bitching about something.

The Phillies were recently working on a blockbuster with Colorado that would have netted them Brian Fuentes and Matt Holliday for something like Shane Victorino, J.A. Happ, Carlos Carrasco, and Lou Marson. Those talks have stalled, and the added payroll might've been a problem for the Phillies anyway.

Holy....shit...

We're more curious why Mets fans continue to bitch about the ballpark, as if the fences move in 60 feet when the Phillies are at bat, but move back 120 feet when the Mets step up to the plate.

And I'm outnumbered like...what...10 to 1 here (and Towelie should really count as like six people unto himself).

I've got to fight on all fronts.

I know I'm just a casual observer of this thread, (posting wise) but it kills me that the Mets fans have to come here to vent there frustrations.

I think Boss knows we're kidding-I've been to the Mets thread and wished death on their dumpster-juice smelling team.

Then you should be glad Shea is gone at the end of the year after all that time Greg Luzinski just belting 'em into the parking lot. A tradition Howard and Burrell hold to this day.

QFT.

Even when those Red Sox fans were bitching about the curse, or when Mojo whines about the Cubs' Smuckers anniversary this year...there's just no comparison.

Ronnie B. has done a lot of justice to what it's actually like to be a Phillies fan when he talks about it on the show.

That's why it's so great to beat up on the Mets. They're at their best right now while it seems we're at our worst for the season. And they can only tie us.

Fuckos.

Again with the drug jokes. Your team has had its share of junkies, gamblers, and alcoholics. oh and one nutted first basemen.

Your team stinks.

Who cares about percent of the vote when you win 27 games in a season the team only wins 59?

That transcends mere mortal quantifications of players.

You're talking about the arm of God.

A wise man once said 'that don't make you a bad person.'

Good luck in the series gentleman, and by that I mean lose every one badly. I'll be there Wednesday hurling curse words towards your team. Anything you want me to pass along? Ryan Howard is a cunt perhaps?

the Phillies might have had Colorado slugger Matt Holliday and lefthanded reliever Brian Fuentes....

Multiple reports had the blockbuster trade going down but, according to Foxsports, it couldn't be finalized.

A source told Morning Report that pitching prospect Carlos Carrasco would have to be included in the deal, and that the Rockies also wanted centerfielder Shane Victorino.

According to Foxsports, the deal would also have cost the Phillies Lou Marson (a top catching prospect) and starting pitcher J.A. Happ.

If that deal goes down, that's a GAME OVER moment.

Holliday in that ballpark, in that lineup...Phillies would by far have the best offense in the NL, and adding Fuentes to THAT bullpen.

It's a hell of a lot to give up, but you HAVE to do it.

That stinks. I would have pressed on-even if I couldn't get Holliday on my offense, I'd still be trying for Fuentes to beef up the bullpen.

Mets did a nice job adjusting 2nd time through the lineup....and throwing six balls in a row doesn't help.

I like his stuff, though.

Just needs to control himself a bit better.

You would think people would be less excited about getting a 5-12 4.96 era pitcher, on a team that had a pretty good record and play in a pitchers park...

Oh well..

And Boss..

Tom Seaver showed up in the Allstar game, but the parking lot was as far as he got. No Filthy Mets in the building that did not have to be there.

It's becoming more and more obvious that the Phillies may need another bat.

Feliz runs hot and cold, Ruiz has been awful all year, and Werth really only hits lefties.

That combined with the fact that both Rollins and Howard are streaky as well (Utley's really the only constant), and they might benefit by trading for an outfielder.

Tomorrow should be pretty telling. If the Mets hang on and take a one game lead, the Phils will have fallen out for the first time in a while, and you've got Myers coming back.

There could be a little bit of foreshadowing in that game tomorrow.
