We have had opportunities but we are leaving them on base. :furious:
I hope Shane's shoulder is really ok.

The ball looked like it kept carrying back to the warning track. Werth looked like he felt pretty bad... Shane got a nice base hit up the middle just then... and now Utley was hit again. Bases loaded and I'm going to scream if we don't take advantage of this with 1 out.

Chase HBP 3X and we only pluncked Church? payback is a bitch Mets!
That play with Delgado throwing into Utley is exactly why you run out everything.
...granted, Reyes setting up directly behind Utley, and directly in the baseline was stupid and a major component of the play...but still.
Victorino has been unbelievable in the field today.
J-Werth! An unsung hero of 2007!
I guess they'll go Durbin-Romero-Gordon to close it out with Charlie not throwing Lidge today.
Don't worry Mets fans, you'll have a good chance at the end.

I LOVE Werth!!! I've said that before and I'll say it again! He'll be a starter someday....
Hmmm, just looked up hit by pitch records and I didn't see Dave Hollins in the top 1000. Must have been my Phillies imagination. Am I wrong though K.C.? Didn't it seem like he was ALWAYS getting hit at the plate?

Most times he was hit by a pitch was 19 in 1992. It did seem like he was getting hit every other at bat, though.
Maybe that was just a Chris Wheeler fabrication that got lodged in my head. The guy always makes shit up like. For instance "You can't sleep on Woody Williams...he's so tough on right-handers"
The guy had a 6 ERA last year.

I'll admit...I was with the 60,000 or so at Shea who thought Easley got all of that one.

I'm very happy with Utley so far this season.. yes its early.
Ok, I'm concerned about JRol.
Yeah, Rollins hurt could be bad.
But there's nothing like the Shea faithful turning on their own on Opening Day...literally booing their team off the field after that last inning.

Ugh godddd! He's in the bullpen.
Jimmy is giving me chills. I really get nervous when the boys, especially starters, are hurt. I hope its a minor sprain.

It didn't look good, thats for sure. I got chills watching it. Hopefully if he has to be out, which I couldn't imagine because it JRol, it will only be 15 day DL.
And seriously, Flash gives me nightmares. I was biting my pillow and not in a good way.

Victorino was definetly the game saver for the Phils today. He must have saved three runs from scoring with those catches. Shane is the MAN!

That fuck Victorino was unbelievable yesterday. I was at the game and it seemed every time the Mets hit what should have been extra bases, this guy ran it down. It was my first time seeing him play center, but I was impressed. If he manages to hit even .240 he should never come out of the line-up.
Seemed to me like Utley had his head hanging over the plate yesterday. Granted, I was in the upper deck, but it was right behind home plate.

yeah utley admitted he was hanging over the plate and said that is how he is and he won't change... the first 2 brushed him, and the 3rd, well Show jsut sucks..

Let's not forget the fourth, which probably cost them the game....although I say that's more Reyes' fault than Delgado's.
Reyes needs to setup on the right side of the bag...he gave Delgado no target except Utley's back.

yuck!
This may be the ugliest baseball I've seen in a long time.
And I think I watched pretty much every inning of the Mets in the field during their nine losses to the Phils.
But the Phils are out Metting the Mets tonight.
Nice to see Jenkins lay out for one...at least someone can catch tonight.
Hey, they're finally out of it.
Hey, Phils, if you're going to commit four errors in three innings, why not try a little harder at the plate.
...just a suggestion.
Kendrick was bad tonight, but it wasn't 100% his fault. As far as the walks go, the ump was squeezing him a little bit. Don't get me wrong, he wasn't good, but he also got nothing around the plate.
And the error...oh, the errors.
Kris10
04-09-2008, 04:47 PM
Kendrick was ugly in the 1st. I miss Rollins.
Well, boys, the domination couldn't last forever.
And even though Wagner looks like he may pitch the 9th, which means the Phils could conceivably rally for seven runs, it looks like the Mets finally may end the streak.

That went too well. I'm really scared.
Nice job by Gordon...when his curve is working, he's still pretty good.
The problem is that he has a well documented shoulder injury he's been pitching with for over a year, so it's impossible to tell what you're going to get from him night to night.
I think I read he wants to finish out his contract (which end this year) and then retire, rather than have surgery.
Kris10
04-10-2008, 06:58 PM
It's going to be a really long season with him in the bullpen since he's so unpredictable.
I didn't think that was an error either, btw.
Fuck, Reyes might have been out...unless he got his hand on the plate over Coste, because he didn't get any plate on the slide.

Bad news:
Victorino on DL with right calf strain
04/12/2008 11:20 PM ET
By Ken Mandel / MLB.com
PHILADELPHIA -- Phillies center fielder Shane Victorino was placed on the 15-day disabled list Saturday night with a strained right calf, the same injury that curtailed his 2007 production.
Outfielder Chris Snelling's contract was purchased from Triple-A Lehigh Valley to fill Victorino's roster spot.
The switch-hitting Victorino grounded to first base to end the sixth inning and ran gingerly to first. He was replaced in the batting order by Geoff Jenkins and in center field by Jayson Werth, who moved over from right field.
Victorino didn't speak to reporters after the game, but conveyed through a team official that he injured himself scoring on a wild pitch in the fifth inning.
He injured the same calf July 30 at Wrigley Field and remained out until Aug. 22. He played sparingly after returning and hit .255 in 26 games, collecting only five of his 37 steals. He was batting .284 at the time of his injury.
Victorino began the season slowly -- hitting .162 through April 10 -- but stroked five hits in his past three games to raise his average to .234. Like teammate Jimmy Rollins, out with a sprained left ankle, Victorino's game relies heavily on speed and mobility.
Without Victorino and Rollins, Phils manager Charlie Manuel will juggle his lineup, with Werth and So Taguchi sharing time in center field. If the injury keeps Victorino out for an extended period, the Phillies may dip into their Minor League system for reinforcements, namely center fielder Greg Golson, who is off to a blistering start for Double-A Reading.
Sucks because Victorino's been so strong defensively. But it's not too bad as Werth is a more than adequate backup.
If I had to guess...Taguchi starts in CF, Werth in RF versus left-handers; Werth in CF, Jenkins in RF versus righties.
Snelling will see some minimal time. I'm kind of curious about him. He was a pretty good prospect at one point in Seattle, but injuries derailed him. He's still pretty young where he could still realize his potential, though.

Rollins likely out for rest of weekend
04/12/2008 7:46 PM ET
By Ken Mandel / MLB.com
PHILADELPHIA -- Raising his arms to acknowledge the cheers was Jimmy Rollins, as the Phillies' shortstop stepped on the field to accept his 2007 National League MVP, Silver Slugger and Gold Glove.
It would likely be the only time Rollins would be on the field Saturday at Citizens Bank Park.
Though available to pinch-hit, Rollins didn't start for the fourth straight game as he recovers from a sprained left ankle he sustained Tuesday.
"I figured I'd give him another day off because he said he was sore [on Friday]," manager Charlie Manuel said.
The last time Rollins was out of the Phils' lineup for four straight games was July 27-30, 2006. Following that absence, he played in 230 consecutive games.
Rollins' absence increases the likelihood that he will miss Sunday's game, enjoy an off-day Monday and return Tuesday against Houston.
"I've thought about that," Manuel said. "It depends on what goes on. I think he's close. I would think he's going to play Tuesday."
Eric Bruntlett has filled in for Rollins with admittedly subpar results. He made two errors in Wednesday's loss to the Mets, and was unable to lay down a key sacrifice bunt Thursday.
"I have to do all those kind of things, moving guys over, getting a bunt down, hit and run -- that kind of stuff," Bruntlett said. "Things that I didn't do in those first two games. I can't go out there and expect to hit the ball all over the park, out of the park, like a lot of these guys are assigned to do. That's not who I am. I can't try to do that. So I just go out and play my game."
Bruntlett acknowledged that part of his struggles -- he was hitting .133 (2-for-15) entering Saturday -- is trying to impress his new teammates, and starting for the reigning NL MVP only heightens that pressure.
"You want to make an impact, and help the team," Bruntlett said. "A lot of this game is about knowing what level to play. It's not 100 percent all the time. You can't force it."
They need Rollins back, because with him and Victorino out, their team speed takes a huge hit.
I'm very curious to see what the lineup looks like tomorrow without Rollins or Victorino. If I had to guess, Werth will lead off, Bruntlett stays in the two-hole. I could see Taguchi in there, though, even though it's a righty, as he's a more natural first hitter.
Hamels through three starts:
22 IP, 2-1, 0.82 ERA, 15 K, 7 BB, 0.81 WHIP
Uhhhh....it's almost scary how good this guy is when he's on.
I think he gets Santana next Friday at CBP, unless the Mets bump a starter because of the off day.

Fuck. Well the rest will do Shane some good. I was very concerned after the run he had with Werth. He hasn't been hitting so maybe he'll have some time to focus on his game.
I would love to see Werth in center and Jenkins in right. I'm very impressed with Jenkins and would like to see him get more playing time. Taguchi doesn't phase me. He'll get playing time but he needs to put his best foot forward and contribute. Its going to be interesting. Rollins needs to get back in the lineup, cause we are hurting.
I was thinking about going to the game on Wed night and taking my crabby, whiney kid but it's not worth it if both Shane and Rollins are going to be out of the lineup. Atleast if Jimmy is back out there I can sport by Rollins jersey and cram a dog down my kid's throat.
Geoff Jenkins is leading off today

Eh...he only gave up a double steal to guys that don't really steal bases.
Marquis was the NL version of the Yanks' Jaret Wright signing a couple years ago...or the Phillies' Adam Eaton signing last year (although I have my fingers crossed on that one...he's pitched well so far).

I think you can get a 17 game partial plan for $500-$600....it gives you a premium to buy Opening Day and first crack at all single game tickets.
If you get tickets for Opening Day, and sell those, Red Sox tickets, Fireworks day, and Fan Appreciation day on eBay or StubHub (you can get a good price for Mets tickets too, but I wouldn't sell to Mets fans) you can make a good profit and get the package free plus some extra cash, just on buying extra tickets for those dates alone.
I could have made $100-$125 each on my Opening Day tickets alone. I have tickets to all three Red Sox games...not sure what I'm going to do yet. I'm contemplating selling since they're going for over $100 on eBay right now, but I'll probably go to at least one, maybe two.

I've followed him since he left the Phils and even when he went on to work with the A.C. Surf and now he's doing Post Game Live. But Gordon, can't deal with him. Maybe its because I'm older... I could have made $100-$125 each on my Opening Day tickets alone. I have tickets to all three Red Sox games...not sure what I'm going to do yet. I'm contemplating selling since they're going for over $100 on eBay right now, but I'll probably go to at least one, maybe two.
Ya, I should have done that it would have been the best thing for me. In the past I've bought just the Sunday home games which I really like. I got robbbed on my Red Sox tickets, they are 400 level and I paid about $150 for them but its a game I really want to go to. My boyfriend is a Red Sox fan and I know its a game we'll both really enjoy.

Even if you buy just the MVP Six Pack....say you get a MVP Six Pack with six tickets....get Opening Day and sell four, get a fireworks game and sell four, a Mets game and sell four, and the Fan Appreciation game and sell four and you still come out ahead and get all the games.
I knew a bunch of people who wanted Opening Day tickets this year who were asking me about them. I told them that's exactly what you do.
Burrell is fucking awesome!
Phillies' fans are going to miss him when he's gone next year. They rode him for every strikeout so hard for such a long time, but he's been a very solid player.
Never lived up to the being a #1 overall pick, but still very solid nonetheless.

Well, looks like the Cubs are conceding the sweep by putting Marquis the Butcher on the mound. Congrats, Phillies.
You were saying?
God I hate losing a game due to an unearned run.
Pat Fucking Burrell!!!! The man is God!
Fuck off, Shawn Chacon, and your eight shutout innings!
Thankfully, Valverde sucks ass.
Un-god damn-believeable.
The people who gave up on this one after the 8th missed out.
I guess there's some justice after all...because the replay looks like Ausmus got Jenkins at the plate despite the safe call.
But hey...the Umps owed one...so all's well that end's well.

Missed it because of the Flyers game, but Pat Burrell is the man! It's so good to see him this hot, this early in the season.
So I was thinking about this today.
If the Phillies had kept everyone in their farm system, this would be the all-home grown 2008 Phillies:
C - Carlos Ruiz
1B - Ryan Howard
2B - Chase Utley
3B - Scott Rolen
SS - Jimmy Rollins
LF - Pat Burrell
CF - Michael Bourn
RF - Shane Victorino
Bench:
OF - Jason Michaels
OF - Marlon Byrd
C - Johnny Estrada
IF - Marlon Anderson
IF - Nick Punto
SP - Cole Hamels
SP - Carlos Silva
SP - Randy Wolf
SP - Gavin Floyd
SP - Adam Eaton (originally drafted by the Phillies...traded for Andy Ashby later on)
CL - Brett Myers
SU - Derrick Turnbow
MR - Ryan Madson
MR - Scott Mathieson
MR - Geoff Geary
LR - Taylor Buchholz
LR - Robinson Tejeda

It's kind of interesting. to compare. If Rolen is healthy, he's better all-around than Feliz. The outfield has less power but more speed and defense. The starting pitching is probably better now than it would have been. Hamels and Eaton are the same...I'd rather have Myers, Moyer, Kendrick than Silva, Wolf, Floyd.
I think Lidge as our closer will be better than Myers would be. Turnbow is obviously a better setup guy than Gordon, but there's no one the equivalent of Romero in that home-grown pen.
So I'd say the Starting Eight is slightly better, but the pitching is a little worse. Not a huge difference, though.

On the plus Burrell is killing for me, and i pick up Jayson Werth to replace Victorino and they have him on the bench today

Rollins is going to be out through the weekend at least, I think. They can't put him on the DL because Manuel keeps using him as a pinch-hitter, so they can't retroact the move from the date he got injured because he keeps showing up.
It would cost him another 15 days.
As good as Werth is playing, they're going to mix and match him, Taguchi, and Jenkins, I think.
Burrell's the one to start, if you have. He's crushing the ball now.

in my league you have no reserves we set our lineups on Monday and that is what you get for the week and its a salary cap league so with $3.10 of $26 being taken up by a bench riding Rollins is killings me, and i dont want to drop him because he will get snatched up. And i know about Werth but he had a great week last week and benching him just seems silly to me but what do i know.
And Burrell has been a bargain at $1.40 so far this year.

GREAT game! I wasn't sure about the line up but it worked. The HR's were awesome... Coste definitely had a great game going 4-5. Burrell & Utley delivered at the plate but I wasn't happy with the # of runners left on base. The weather was beautiful and had a bunch of fun with the guys in my section.. nothing beats meeting great Phils fans and bonding during the game, my daughter drove me insane but we had a terrific time.

That game lived up to the hype. Santana was awesome, Hamels was very good.
The bullpens sucked, but the Mets' sucked just a little less tonight.
The Werth dive on the Wright ball was probably the difference. If he had played it straight up, I don't think Reyes would have scored. May have been an entirely different ballgame at 1-0 than 2-0

in my humble and honest opinion, me thinks we miss j-roll quite a bit last night, especially for his defense!! (quite and understatement!!)
Suppose to be back in Sunday, but we've heard that about eight times already.
I'm looking forward to this afternoon. If the Phils grab the next two with Grandpa and Adam 'Met Killer' Eaton on the mound, the division is even up (standings wise...Mets still have two in-hand) and we basically start it over again.
If you want to take some positives out of the start so far, it's better than last year, and their pitching has actually been pretty good. If they come out of April .500 and the pitching stays around where they're throwing now, this team is in very good shape
Guys like Howard, Rollins, Victorino, Ruiz, usually take a little while to get going. The only guy who usually starts on fire is Burrell each year.
So when those bats come around, this team will catch fire.
April is always their biggest problem, but they've outperformed already what they've done in recent years.

Howard starts the two out rally, and a big hit by Carlos Ruiz to give the Phillies the lead. Hopefully this jump starts both these guys.
If the Phils hold on to win, I have to give Manuel credit on this one. I thought he'd lift Ruiz for Coste to face Brian Fuentes, but he stuck with his guy and it paid off.
Gordon on now.

KC..knowing that they usually suck in april..what has been their april record the last few years? you seem to be one who can find these things out!!
2007: 11-14
2006: 10-14
2005: 10-15
2004: 10-11
They sit at 11-10 with seven games left in April. I'd say a reachable goal would be five of the next seven.
That would put them at 16-12 for the month which would be an excellent turn around.
It's also equally important that no one has ran away early this year. The Mets started in 15-9, and 16-8 in '07 and '06 respectively. They're at 10-9 right now.

Agreed, which is why I'm a little skeptical of the Mets. I don't know that they have the depth this season to win the kind of 'war of atrition' that the NL East is going to be.
So far, the Phils have shown they can get by for a little bit without some of their guys.

it's strange how no one ever talks about the Mets not having Alou. the guy hit 340 last season witha 30 game hit streak... he is a major factor for them
Well, we haven't had Alou, Pedro, Castro or El Duque. If we ever will, I have no idea.
Pagan will be a nice bench asset when Alou comes back, and actually helps deflect a little of the hit losing Gomez and Milledge.
My big thing is this; the Mets have a pretty damn good starting five when they're all healthy. I won't even include El Duque in it, because quite frankly, I think Pelfrey is past him.
But they have no minor league depth in pitching, which means their starting rotation and bullpen has to hold up all year, or else you're looking at guys like Nelson Figueroa and Claudio Vargas playing huge roles, which may work here and there, but I don't think can work long term.
The Phils rotation isn't great on paper (although they've pitched well as a pitching staff so far), but they are sitting on Carrasco, Outman, Savery, and Mathieson in the minors if someone falters. That's a pretty good young foursome that can contribute if need.
I have more faith in one of those guys playing a big role late in the year than guys like Figueroa or Vargas, if need be.
And if it is a close race, that could be all the difference.

Not replace...platoon.
Church is hitting lefties well right now (.355), but his history doesn't suggest he'll hold up. He hit .229 last season against them.
You stick with Church for now, since he's so hot, but when he starts to cool off, you work your way into a left/right platoon with him and Pagan in RF.
And then use one to spell Alou here and there. Alou is probably a five day a week player at this point in his career anyway if you want to keep him healthy.

Ned Yost is a retard.
He leaves Dave Bush in to hit in the 6th, despite a chance to get back in the game. Then he pulls him after giving up a leadoff double to Werth in the 7th.
And he has 14 PITCHERS!!!!
If only he had 1/10th of the wisdom of this guy:

Stetter's ok, but Howard just made him look like a million bucks with his awful at bat.
I give Hamels the 7th...if he get through it trouble free, you let him start the 8th, with Romero and Gordon warming up in the pen. Use them if he gets into trouble.
Lidge gets the 9th if they have a lead.

I know where I got mixed up last night about Weth's in park HR:
I was going back and forth and saw that Werth hit one, then went to the vid feed to see any footage, and they were still running stuff from the night before.
And the game was on UPN, I could have watched it. I'm a retard for not checking the broadcast schedule before the game. I just assumed a weeknight game would be on Comcast.

I'm not sure I can really blame Charlie....Hamels was ahead of him in the count, and was throwing fastballs in the strike zone for some reason.
He needed to throw out of the zone and get Fielder to chase, especially with a base open.
We'll probably get Taguchi, Coste, and Werth in the 9th against Gagne. Taguchi needs to find a way to get on.

Is Pat Burrell that bad in the field he gets pulled an awful lot in the 7th and 8th innings it seems
He was never very quick, but some continuous leg injuries have basically slowed him down to a crawl.
Taguchi and Bohn can cover more ground, and you have to start thinking defense from the 7th on a lot of times at Citizens Bank Park.
Needless to say, if the Phils don't resign Burrell, he has DH or 1B in his future.

Manuel: Victorino to return Tuesday
04/25/2008 6:56 PM ET
By Chris Adamski / Special to MLB.com
PITTSBURGH -- The Phillies have more than treaded water with some of their regular contributors out of the lineup for various reasons, and the team reported some good news Friday regarding two injured players -- including the reigning National League MVP.
First, news on speedy outfielder Shane Victorino, who has been on the disabled list since April 13 with a strained right calf. After two games of a rehabilitation assignment with Class A Clearwater in which he went 2-for-5 with an RBI and a run, Victorino will move up the organization ladder. He was to continue his rehab with Double-A Reading on Friday.
"He's going to Reading [on Friday] and [Saturday], and then he's going to go play two games at [Triple-A] Lehigh Valley," Phillies manager Charlie Manuel said. "And he'll join us Tuesday."
Assuming there are no setbacks and Victorino does indeed join the Phils when they host the Padres for the start of a three-game series at Citizens Bank Park on Tuesday, that would represent the earliest he could return from the 15-day disabled list.
Rollins, meanwhile, isn't as close to returning from his sprained left ankle. On the disabled list since Sunday, he will remain in Clearwater, Fla., to continue his rehabilitation.
"Jimmy's doing infield work, and he's taking batting practice," Manuel said. "He's coming along pretty good."
Also, catcher Chris Coste was back in the lineup Friday for the first time in five days and played for the first time in three games.
"I had something going on," said Coste, who is hitting .370. "I don't know what it was, but I feel much better."
Carlos Ruiz, hitting only .194, started each of the past four games.
Not only was Coste back in the lineup, he was in the No. 5 spot against Pirates starter Zach Duke. That represents the highest he has batted this season. In each of his other starts, Manuel had Coste in the seventh or eighth spots.
"Ever since he's come to the big leagues, he's hit lefties good," Manuel said. "And with the lineup the way it is, I like hitting him fifth, because I know he's going to make contact and put the ball in play."
This story was not subject to the approval of Major League Baseball or its clubs.
I'm a little curious to see what happens when Victorino comes of the DL.
You obviously want Victorino in for his defense, but Werth has been unbelievable hot. Jenkins has been struggling. How Charlie juggles them is going to be interesting. You have to at least play Jenkins regularly against righties, because you want to see him get going.
So my guess is it'll be something like this
vs. Left-handers
Werth starts
Victorino and Jenkins platoon (Victorino gets most of the starts)
Vs. Right-Handers
Victorino starts
Werth and Jenkins platoon (Jenkins gets most of the starts)
And then they have to decide whether or not they send down Bohn or Harman. Harman fills the utility IF spot, but Feliz can play some SS and 2B if need be, so my guess is Harman goes and Bohn sticks.

So far, so good...pretty close to weathering the April storm without Rollins or Victorino and Howard hitting like garbage.

This caught my eye a couple days ago:
Considering A Padres Fire Sale
The Padres are 8.5 games out, and it's only April 28th. It's not a good place to be. Obviously they aren't throwing in the towel yet, but if they have a similarly ugly May a fire sale could be in order. Let's speculate on some trade possibilities.
* Greg Maddux. The Padres' highest paid player at $10MM, Mad Dog is calling his own shots at this point. I imagine he'd prefer to stay put.
* Brian Giles. The team's leadoff hitter still knows how to draw a walk. He doesn't hit lefties much but his overall numbers would look a lot better away from Petco. He earns $9MM this year and has a $3MM buyout for '09. He can block trades to eight teams and gets a $2MM increase if dealt.
* Jim Edmonds. He'd have to shake off the slow start and remain healthy. Makes $8MM with no-trade protection; the Cards are paying $2MM of his salary.
* Trevor Hoffman. Even if Hoffman loses the closer gig a trade seems unlikely.
* Randy Wolf. He might be one of the Padres' more tradeable commodities. He's signed reasonably and just needs to remain healthy. Everyone needs pitching.
* Khalil Greene. Greene gets $4.5MM this year and $6.5MM in '09. Trading him only makes sense if a good young shortstop comes back.
* Others: Tadahito Iguchi, Tony Clark, Glendon Rusch, Michael Barrett (if healthy).
Obviously, I don't think Maddux would come East, and definitely not to Citizens Bank Park...however, I wouldn't mind Wolf and Iguchi.
Although I think the Phillies may be tired of dealing with Wolf. The last two years, they offered him better contracts than the teams he signed with and he snubbed them both times.
Iguchi, though, genuinely wanted to come back, wouldn't have been able to sign until May 15th because of the details of his contract and release. He would have played 3B had they signed him. However, now whether or not the Phillies would have interest may be a point to consider.
The Phils seem pretty happy with their bench of Werth, Dobbs, Coste, Bruntlett, and Taguchi.
Here's a minor league roundup for the club:
Antonio Bastardo, LHP, High-A Clearwater (Phillies)
Bastardo can be seen as one of those “is what he is” kind of players: a short lefty with average velocity. However, beyond his left-handedness, he’s also got fantastic command and a killer changeup. That’s enough to make him some kind of prospect, and he’s on a roll with the Threshers, striking out 13 over eight two-hit innings yesterday—his third double-digit strikeout game in five starts. Currently sitting with a 1.17 ERA and 47 Ks in 30 2/3 innings, Bastardo is starting to get some attention as something more than just a future lefty lefty specialist, though he still has that in his back pocket, as lefty batters are currently 3-for-37 with 23 strikeouts against the 22-year-old Dominican.
Finally, reliever Scott Mathieson scheduled a visit with Dr. James Andrews in Birmingham, Ala., for a third opinion on his surgically repaired right elbow. Mathieson saw Dr. Lew Yocum in Los Angeles as well as the Phillies' doctors. Even though he has some discomfort, he appears to be going through the natural progression of recovery.
"It's not a setback," Steve Nowryta, the Phillies director of the minor leagues, said. "(Mathieson) wanted to get another opinion, and that's understandable."

we did yeh

That's a bit of a half-truth.
He's never had the best runners in scoring position average (until this season), but driving in runs is driving in runs, and he's good for 100 a season. Padding a lead is an important part of the game, especially when you play in Citizens Bank Park and have pitching as bad as the Phillies have had aat times.
But what people never understood, and they wouldn't if they didn't follow the team, is that from 2005 right up until this year, he was playing through wrist, foot, and leg injuries. I would say that has as much to do with how streaky he's been throughout his career as losing his mechanics from time to time.
Just look at the way the guy runs now...it's painful to watch him try and run out groundballs.
He's as healthy as he's been since he first came up, this season.
He's never going to be what he projected to be out of college, but again, how do you knock a guy who as a 3rd or 4th offensive option in the lineup, drives in 30 HRs and 100 RBI.

The nice thing about this is that even though the Marlins and Mets have games in hand, all three teams are tied in the loss column.
So the Marlins would have to win both of their games in hand to tie...the Mets would have to win all three of theirs.
Good position to be in.
