Don't forget it will be 36 with a chance of ice/snow also. Gonna be a fun game to watch.
Who do you give the start?
If he's healthy, I'd still go with Happ, but it doesn't sound good for him being ready for Saturday.
I have no idea who to go with between Blanton and Martinez.

Happ.
Although Martinez was quoted as saying "I've been around long enough to know that it's my turn."
Pedro gets named the starter today.
I was thinking about this quite a bit today, and I've come to the conclusion I like the move for a few reasons:
1) The Rockies have some young bats in the lineup that he should be able to exploit.
2) It's going to be freezing...you know Pedro has the balls to throw inside, which will drive hitters nuts on such a cold night.
3) The Phillies should be able to get to Jason Hammel, and nobody front-runs with a lead like Pedro. It makes him that more devastating when hitters get in a position where they're pressing.
Because of the postponement yesterday, Happ gets the ball tonight, Lee gets the ball in Game 4, Pedro gets bumped.
Now, here's the thing...they may not be able to play tonight either...scheduling the game at 8PM mountain time is insane. If it snows all day, it'll freeze the field by game time.
MLB, and their slave/master relationship to the networks, has really fucked this thing up scheduling wise. They should be playing this game at 1PM MT to optimize the weather and ensure they get the game in.
If I were Colorado, I'd be pissed. They went from having a sizeable advantage because of how the Phillies managed their pitching staff, to being at least even up again in terms of matchups.
Let's do this thing.

Love J.A. Happ manning up and taking the mound without sleeves....that cold looks brutal.

How cold is it?
Rough inning...the Rockies just hit good pitches early in the inning...he had Atkins struck out, and then just grooved one in the full count for the second run.
I'd like to see him throw more in on the hands with the fastball....too much nibbling for my liking.

It's 30 degrees there right now.
This umpire is fucking BRUTAL with his strike zone.
Hey asshole, it's 30 degrees, how about giving the corners.
TripleSkeet

He refuses to give Happ that fucking inside corner. That 2nd RBI shouldve been an inning ending strikeout. This kid cant buy a break tonight from that fucking jackoff umpire. I hope Pedro is ready, he may be pitching the 2nd half of this game.
What a phenomenal at bat by Ibanez. Professional hitter!

Looks like Blanton's in...being a good 300 lbs should give him a decided advantage in the cold weather.
It's scary how badly Blanton's hanging that slider the few times he's thrown it.
Stick to fastball/changeup, big man.

He can use Pedro in the back end, so I think he was comfortable burning Madson there, instead of going to Durbin or Bastardo.
I'm pretty sure Lidge is getting the ball in the 9th if they have a lead, though.

Well if that happens, itll either make him or break him for good in this town. Although he dont have to worry now, since its tied.

Wow. Talk about nailbiting.
Quick Question...
Why is the Rockies mascot a purple triceratops? I think the only thing gayer would be if it was a cock, that was somehow sucking another cock.
And why does he stand behind home plate trying to distract the pitcher at the end of a playoff game? That shit is so fucking bush.

What? First of all the Phillie fanatic is the best mascot in all of sports. Second, because of the odd name of the team, and the fact that we dont even know what the Fanatic is, you cant really say that the mascot has nothing to do with the team.
Here youve got a team named after Mountains whose mascot is a fucking dinosaur. Explain that.
And in all my years watching the Phillies I have NEVER seen the Fanatic behind home plate trying to distract the pitcher as hes trying to pitch. Go ahead, explain how Im wrong.

You're slamming one team for having a nonsensical mascot while your own team has the most nonsensical mascot. You slam one for being "gay" when yours has a cone custom-made for dick-sucking as a mouth. That it's one of the best known mascots in sports has nothing to do with why it's OK for your team to have a completely nonsensical mascot but unacceptable for any other team to have the same. What, the Rockies are supposed to have someone running around dressed like a fucking mountain? Who gives a shit if it's a dinosaur? It's a stupid mascot. The Giants have a fucking seal, the Nationals have an eagle, the Padres have a chicken and the Mariners have a goddamned moose. Are you losing sleep over those, too?
And in all my years watching the Phillies I have NEVER seen the Fanatic behind home plate trying to distract the pitcher as hes trying to pitch. Go ahead, explain how Im wrong.
Yeah, since you've personally never seen the mascot behind home plate during a game means he's never been there in all the years that the character has existed. That's some real ironclad evidence right there. Given the number of times we've seen mascots from various teams behind home plate it's probably a safe bet the Phanatic has ended up back there over the course of its 30-year existence.

No dumb fuck. Im not saying the Phanatic has never been behind home plate. Im saying Ive never seen him back there, facing the fucking pitcher and waving his hands up and down like that stupid fucking dinosaur was doing in the 9th inning of a playoff game last night. Ive never seen any mascot do that in a playoff game actually. And considering Ive watched hundreds of Phillies games and plenty of other teams playoff games Id say that its pretty fucking rare.
Probably because its so fucking bush league. What it reminded me of the most was a woman at the Mets / Red Sox World Series in 86, who, every time the Mets were at bat at home, would wave this white handkerchief up and down directly behind home plate trying to distract the Red Sox pitchers.
Oh, and the Nationals and Mariners mascots make sense. San Diegos I never understood, unless it has something to do with the high Mexican population, and the Phanatic isnt just the best known mascot in sports, hes just the best mascot. Get rid of the fucking gay Barney the Dinosaur and get a Mountain Climber.

Anyone else notice that annoying fuckface teenage kid behind home plate, and his over-cheering for EVERY fuckin' pitch thing happening in the game? He would stand up and throw his arm around and clap then sit down, OR stand up and throw his arm around and then shake his head and boo the ump. It was very annoying, and if I was sitting behind him he would have heard about it.

I've seen mascots behind home plate for critical regular season games and in the playoffs. Now is my anecdotal evidence any less valid than yours?

How is a woman directly behind home plate waving something going to distract the hitters who are looking in the opposite direction?
It's ultimately sour grapes. People can't sit down there and use things like laser pointers or reflective items and their ilk to intentionally distract the players, but if someone wants to wear something hideous or wave their arms or scream or jump around or swing towels or whatever they can. If a pro ball player can handle all of that they can handle a stupid mascot, which they've all seen a billion fucking times, acting like a jackass.

Or they just keep having a nonsensical mascot like plenty of other teams have and JUST LIKE YOUR TEAM HAS. Jesus Christ, this is ridiculous. You're screaming about a team doing the exact same thing as your team in terms of having a mascot that has nothing to do with the team.
And shit, if you think having a moose "makes sense" for the Mariners, then why does having a triceratops as a mascot since they found triceratops fossils when building Coors Field not make sense?

The Phanatic is a random mascot because the name Phillie is a random name. And if thats true that they found triceratops bones when building the stadium why didnt you just fucking say that when I asked? I thought it was funny that since Game 1 Ive heard it mentioned about 100 times how Colorado was the 3rd best team in the NL for come from behind wins. But I didnt even know until they said it tonight that the Phillies were first.
Plus I can finally stop hearing the phrase "up the ladder".
I hope the umps in the next series are better then the horseshit there was this round.

He may, but not Blue Jay fans. To be honest, they'll get just as much next year for him and still get the chance to see where they're at first after June in 2010.
I wonder if Martinez told him that he was gassed after the 7th.
If not, he has to start the 8th.
I get why Charlie went to Park, but it's a hell of a lot to ask to bring him in back to back days when he's barely pitched (not that it would have made a difference if Utley doesn't airmail that ball).
I'd have started the inning with Madson. I know he's struggled, but you have to keep some semblance of these guys' roles....Madson in the 8th, Lidge in the 9th.
Now if guys get on base, I have no problem hooking them to play matchups. I'm not bothered by using five pitchers in an inning...but it should have been Martinez or Madson that starts that inning.
I think Charlie fell a little too in love with Park after last night and all the praise he got for pitching in that situation.

Those are two hitters he should dominate with his changeup.
The botched double-play is the killer, and then there's not much you can do about Happ....terrible situation, and he can't groove one 3-2 to Ethier just to get a strike. Ethier's too good a hitter for that.

i was shocked to see park over madson as well, but park did the job, and happ has to groove one, and hope he hits it at somebody. even with the top of the order coming up you can't expect the phills to score a run off broxton.

I wonder if Martinez told him that he was gassed after the 7th.
I doubt it. They were warming Happ up in the 7th just in case it got to the pitchers spot in the batting order. Thats why they pulled him, so they could pitch hit for him in the 8th, which to me is just stupid because I cant figure out whos fucking worse between Cairo, Francisco and Stairs.
Not saying Utley gets a pass, but the bottom line is Pedro should have pitched the entire game until he started giving up some hits. There was no reason to pull him.
Maybe Manuel realized that Pedro was pitching on the 6th anniversary of the "Grady Little Game".
Just left Delaware Park to place my football bets....Ricky Bottalico and Rob Ellis were doing a remote for WIP there.
Lots of Phils talk...pretty much the same thing everyone's been saying. Either Martinez or Madson should have started the inning, but it's all moot, since the Phillies only scored one run, and if they play good defense in the 8th, they're in the 9th still leading 1-0.
Have to agree. Can't kill Charlie for the moves he made yesterday.

Bullshit. Complete bullshit. Sorry I dont give Charlie a pass on that fuck up. Utley shouldve had that double play but that still doesnt guarantee they dont tie the game. He overmanaged and it bit him in the ass. It happens, I just hope he learns from it.

Rollins, Werth and Utley's lack of baseball bat skill have killed this team thus far. Gotta kick them in the ass to get shit started. Although Utley has come close a few times to going yard.
Hopefully that was the shit play they needed to get out of the way to focus on putting them over the top. That type of loss should never happen.

I really don't understand where you can say he overmanaged.
-He chooses to start Pedro instead of Blanton
-He lifts Pedro for Park after 7...ok, you could say he should leave Martinez in, but I've yet to hear or see anything where he said he was good to go for the 8th. The guy hasn't pitched in a month, it's very possible he was gassed at that point
-Park botches a bunt, Utley botches a double play...manager can't do anything about that.
-He goes to Eyre on Thome...I don't know any manager that wouldn't make that move. Thome just sat on a fastball and Eyre missed his spot.
-He goes to Madson on Kemp...Madson gets the K.
-Now if you want to say Madson should have faced Ethier, ok...I can kind of give you that, but Ethier is a sub .200 hitter against lefties all year. I think that's open for debate.
But until I hear someone say Pedro believed he could pitch the 8th, I can't kill him for using the pen, and even though I think I would have used Madson to start the 8th, Park's pitching isn't what caused the trouble in that inning.

Youre not going to hear him say that because hes not gonna throw Manuel under the bus. But it was obvious he was going to lift Pedro for a pitch hitter. The inning before he had Happ warming up in case they got to the pitchers spot. When they didnt, out came Pedro. He didnt even have 100 pitch count. Gassed or not Id have sent him out there until he let two men get on base with less then two outs. Even for the 9th. You got him for nothing. Pitch him until his arm falls off for all I care, as long as its working.
The Park fuck up amazes me. How many times are these guys gonna misplay bunts? Thats something they need to fix immediately.
And Im not a big believer in switching pitchers for each hitter. All year long you have these guys working innings against both left and right handers. Personally I feel the last two games he has used his bullpen entirely too much. Pick a pitcher and leave him in if hes doing well. Really it reminds me of the Simpsons episode where Mr. Burns pulls Darryl Strawberry for Homer Simpson because its called "playing the averages".

His fastball was considerably weaker as a starter, meaning his changeup is less effective. He throws a lot harder out of the pen. Not sure why that is, but he was throwing low 90s as a starter.
Plus, like Hamels is seeing now, he would need a third pitch, and Madson's curve is so many levels of awfulness, I hope I never see it again.

I've never seen so much unwarranted Philly hate simply because of a sports team than I've seen in North Jersey. I can only imagine that it has something to do with living in the shadow of NYC and they're siding with them when NYC looks down on someone else.
It's like a bully picking on someone in the schoolyard, and kids fall in line either with or against the bully, depending on whether the bully allows them to stand behind him.
Then there are those kids who aren't the bully's friends, nor are they the bully's enemies. They're just kinda, there. They jump with the bully. The bully doesn't give a shit about them. The bully doesn't even know their name.
But those kids feel like they're tough, even if it's for a few moments.

If the Yanks close it out tonight, likely matchups are
Game 1 - Sabathia vs. Lee
Game 2 - Burnett vs. Hamels
Game 3 - Pettitte vs. Martinez
Game 4 - Sabathia (three days rest) vs. Lee (three days rest)
Game 5 - Gaudin vs. Happ
Game 6 - Burnett vs. Hamels
Game 7 - Sabathia (three days rest) vs. Lee (three days rest)
Burnett could possibly pitch Game 5 on short rest, but I'm not sure he's ever done. No chance Hamels goes on short rest in the series.

Looks like a Polanco signing is eminent. Pretty good pickup.
Id rather have Beltre.

I'm not so sure about it. Polanco def is the better player of the two. Happy they got him.
Slide him into that 2nd spot, slide Victorino down a little. Should be nice.

I got a call from Ruben Amaro earlier, thanking me for being a partial season ticket holder. I said I would thank him back if they removed the 25% money due right before christmas, signed Chone Figgins and Roy Halladay, and bumped me up to Suite tickets.
They signed Polanco to a 3 year deal.
3 yrs plus option for 4th.
This is a great move.
Polanco's a career .303 hitter and never strikes out, and won two gold gloves in the last three years.
He slides right into the #2 spot, Vic slides down to #7 where he's better suited.
Plus, with Polanco, it allows you to move Utley to 1B from time to time to rest Howard, without taking too much firepower out of the lineup.
When Utley gets a rest, Polanco can play 2B, and Castro 3B.
