Never even thought about the cleats.
That's funny.
As far as the football thing, it's the only sport I can actually sit down and watch an entire game, so I couldn't agree more.
And they don't quit playing in the middle of the game because the field got wet.

If this game were played before 2003, they would not have counted the run in the top of the 6th, and the Phils would have won.

I love the silly "baseball sucks because it isn't played in the rain" arguments.
Rain totally fucks up both the hitting and the pitching. The running the bases and people getting hurt in the field is secondary because odds are it's not gonna get to that point because the pitchers are throwing garage and the hitters are just smacking soggy shots that don't go anywhere.

Biggest pussy move Ive ever seen. They waited for Tampa to tie it up, then called the game without giving the Phillies a chance to bat and let Tampa try and field in that slop.
And they did it just so they didnt have to stop the game with the Phils leading, schedule a day to finish the game, and have to explain why they were going to ignore the MLB rule that stated the Phils were supposed to be declared the winners.
I had no problem with them restarting the game another day, but at least let vboth teams have equal at bats before stopping the game. Its not like it just started raining. It had been like that for a fucking hour.
And anyone that says "You wouldnt want to win a World Series in a game that was called because of rain" doesnt know dick. I could and would take that title in a fucking heartbeat. There are a bunch of whiners out there saying that the series is tainted now because of the suspension. look, I'm frustrated by it too, but rain delays and suspensions are part of the game. the better team will bounce back from it and win.

I agree skyscraper. Obviously you shouldn't win a series on a 6 inning game. The fact of the matter was that the ame should have been suspended in the 5th when it took 30 mins between halves and clay had tobe brought out and spread. Gotta suck for people who lost or destroyed their tickets. Meh.

I heard this morning that both teams wanted to play the game earlier in the night because of the weather. Fox blocked that request. So who knows.
Drizzle isn't much of a problem, but the downpour last night was. There is a significant decrease in mobility and an increase in injury possibilities. When you pitch and bat you are moving all around. You aren't just standing there like a statue. You can turn an ankle, pull your back out from not being able to twist you feet in the sand while swinging, or take a ball right in the face when it gets lost in the rain.
The moment they broke out clay and sand it should have been rain delayed. It's rare for this to happen during a World Series game, but it did.

They should have never started the game, or started the game earlier (which all the players on both sides asked MLB to do, but FOX refused, because of their TV rights).

Heres my problem...you let Tampa bat 6 innings in those conditions? The the fucking Phillies shouldve gotten 6 at bats too. You dont give one team an advantage over another, and thats what they did.
The game shouldve been stopped after 5. The reason they let Tampa keep playing is because they not only wanted but NEEDED a tie score. See the MLB rulebook says that if they stop the game with Philly leading, then they should have been declared the winner. Now agree with it or not, if Selig didnt do that he would have to explain that he was IGNORING the rules. So having Tampa tie that game basically got him off the hook and there was no way he was giving Philly a chance to take the lead.
And you say nobody would want a World Series win that came because they stopped the game after 5 innings. Try telling me that stupid bullshit if they somehow lose this series. Because I dont fucking care how they get it, I want a championship.

No. The playoff and WS rules are much more nebulous than the regular season rules. They don't have to, nor would they, call a WS game and declare a premature winner, especially not in the game that ptoentialy decides the whole thing. Even if the game was official and Philly was still leading they still would have suspended the gam ad completed it later. Nobody's ignoring any rules. I agree it was stupid that they didn't play the game earlier, cancel it altogether or suspend it earlier than they did, but there's zero chance the game would have been called and a winner declared without 9 innings having been played.

PHILADELPHIA -- The World Series won't resume until Wednesday night at the earliest.
With rain still falling in Philadelphia, Major League Baseball decided not to attempt to complete Game 5 between the Phillies and Tampa Bay Rays on Tuesday night. The completion of the game tentatively was scheduled for 8:37 p.m. ET on Wednesday.
"While obviously we want to finish Game 5 as soon as possible, the forecast for today does not allow for us to continue the game this evening," commissioner Bud Selig said. "We are closely monitoring tomorrow's forecast and will continue to monitor the weather on an hourly basis. We will advise fans as soon as we are able to make any final decisions with respect to tomorrow's schedule."
The game, played in increasingly heavy rain, was suspended Monday following a 30-minute delay with the Phillies and Rays tied 2-2 after 5½ innings. It was the first time a World Series game that began wasn't played to completion on the same day.
Philadelphia leads the series 3-1 and is hoping to close out its second title, its first since 1980.

Phil Sheridan nailed it.
Tainted by television
By Phil Sheridan
Inquirer Sports Columnist
Game 5 of the World Series became a farce the moment Jimmy Rollins - one of the finest defensive shortstops of his generation - dropped that zigging, zagging pop-up in the fifth inning.
This doesn't happen to Rollins, an all-star and the reigning National League MVP, in playable baseball conditions.
"When you look up into the rain, it's pretty hard to catch a ball," Phillies starter Cole Hamels said.
In April or May, in June or July, in August or September, the umpires would have stopped play at that moment - if they hadn't already. Pop-ups that drop toward unseeing eyes can seriously injure a player. It was pouring rain. Pools of water were forming in front of the infielders. Pitchers were cleaning their spikes after every pitch.
In October, the game went on. And Major League Baseball should be ashamed for allowing its most important game of the year to deteriorate into an embarrassing mess because of slavish obedience to its pimp, the Fox Television Network.
Simply put, Game 5 is hopelessly tainted by what transpired between the time the game should have been called and the middle of the sixth inning, when it was finally suspended.
Whatever happens when play resumes, whether the Phillies celebrate their first World Series championship or the Rays force a Game 6 in Florida, MLB can't justify its decision or its decision-making process.
This night was different from Saturday, when a rain delay caused Game 3 to begin 91 minutes late, at about 10 p.m. That game ended at nearly 2 a.m., but it was played fairly and under perfectly acceptable conditions.
Those things are going to happen in outdoor ballparks in the Northeast in late October. It rained all day Saturday, and the best time to play the game was, in fact, when it was played.
The first problem here is TV's insistence on scheduling these games for 8:30 p.m. or even later. There are plenty of lovely autumn afternoons - and yesterday was one of them - that give way to cold and blustery evenings. When baseball, like other sports, sold its soul to the networks and their craven need for prime-time sports programming, it created a situation where young fans couldn't stay up to watch the most important games of the year.
There is no mechanism for the baseball commissioner, Bud Selig, to look at the weather reports, discern that a night game is doomed, and shift the start time to late afternoon.
That would inconvenience fans, but so does suspending the game for a day. That would be tough on players, but so does suspending the game for a day.
If the fans and players were the priorities, last night's game would have been stopped much sooner. They aren't. Television is, and television won't allow its prime-time program to be moved to 5 p.m.
Rollins, rain pouring into his face, dropped that pop-up in the top of the fifth. The play was rather nastily ruled an error, as if it had occurred in acceptable conditions. Hamels got out of that inning without allowing a run. The Phillies led, 2-1, in the middle of the fifth.
At that moment, a regular-season game would become official. A rainout would mean the game was over, with the Phillies winning.
"This is not a way to end a World Series," Selig said. "I would not allow a World Series to end this way."
Selig is right on that point. The problem is, it appears MLB allowed play to continue in unplayable conditions because the Phillies had a lead. It seems like more than a coincidence that play was suspended after the top of the sixth, when the Rays tied the game on a base hit by Carlos Pena.
That run was scored by B.J. Upton, who hit a two-out grounder up the middle. Rollins ranged to his left, caught the ball deep in the hole and turned to fire a throw to first. The ball slipped out of his hand and Upton was safe.
Now Upton is fast. It may well be that Rollins wouldn't have been able to get him. But it's also impossible to know whether the slick infield slowed Rollins down as well as caused him to lose his grip on the ball. If he throws Upton out, the inning is over.
Upton scored from second on Pena's single to left. Pat Burrell's throw was on target but bounced in the muck in front of home plate. Would a cleaner bounce have allowed Carlos Ruiz to get the ball sooner?
Maybe these are long shots. The point is, no one knows. What we do know is that this game was being played in unacceptable conditions. That's not my opinion. It's Selig's, too. He ordered the game suspended just moments later.
"The weather, it kept changing," Selig said.
Well, yes, sir. We call that Earth.
The tie made suspending the game a lot easier and more convenient. It sure looks as if Major League Baseball let an unplayable game play on long enough to make things easier.
And that's just shameful.
Every time I see Bud Selig's face, I want to punch my TV.
I loathe that man.
And the arrogance of this dick, to say "I would do nothing different today than I did last night" makes this all the more infuriating.
And it's a flat out lie that he didn't know the rain would be this bad.
Every radar has a solid sheet of green covering Philadelphia and everything around it within a 500 mile radius.
And now the Rays have descended on Delaware's beloved Hotel DuPont to stay in...I want that trash out of my state.
TripleSkeet
10-28-2008, 05:15 PM
Even if the Rays hadn't tied it up, they never would have called the game. There's no rule for that in the WS, and they're not going to end the freakin' WS on a game called for rain.
Actually there is a rule in place for that. And the rule states that if one team is leading after 5 innings and the game is called for rain then that team is supposed to be declared the winner. In baseball the rules of the playoffs are exactly the same as the rules of the regular season.
The difference is there is also a rule in place that states that the commissioner of baseball can change the rules as he sees fit. He mentioned this last night.
There was also a rule in place until 2003 that said that games can only be suspended after the bottom of an inning. Which is the way it should be. If that rule were still in place they would erase the entire top of the 6th inning and thats where the game would resume.
And I dont care what anyone says, Im tired of waiting. After everything we've been through I would take a championship from a rainout game, and wouldnt consider it gay or tainted in the least. Fuck, if the Phils lost Game 5 and the entire Tampa Bay team died in a plane crash going back for Game 6 not only would I accept the the trophy, I would fucking carry it over my head down the length of Broad St. with a smile from ear to ear the entire time. THATS how fucking desperate I am for this city to win a title.

The difference is there is also a rule in place that states that the commissioner of baseball can change the rules as he sees fit. He mentioned this last night.
Which is why everyone knew there was zero chace of the game being called due to rain. It has nothing to do with Selig...no commissioner would allow a WS game to be called due to rain, especially if it's the deciding one of the series.
And I dont care what anyone says, Im tired of waiting. After everything we've been through I would take a championship from a rainout game, and wouldnt consider it gay or tainted in the least.
Luckily, we'll never have to find out since a WS game will never be called due to rain.

i get that maybe it shoulda been stopped earlier then it was, and that they seemed to wait until it was tied. But I dont think its an issue that its suspended. NO FUCKIN CHANCE, even if they stop it phillies up 1, do they EVER call a world series game before 9 innings. NO FUCKIN CHANCE

Well if you know the rules, dont say theres no rule in place for the World Series. It is in place for the World Series.
And no, everyone did not know Selig was going to make the game continue. How can you just assume the commissioner is going to ignore the rules of the game? I was with a group of about 40 people and none of us were sure how they were planning on handling the rain. If the rule says the games over, its not crazy to think theyd follow it.
I think the biggest reason people thought he may not continue the game another day is because the fucking douchebag waited so long to stop it in the first place. If he had every intention of continuing then why the fuck would he waste almost a half hour letting the grounds crew spread clay all over the pitchers mound????

Technically, I guess, but nobody in their right mind assumes it would ever be enforced in what is potentially the final game of the WS. It's the World Series and baseball is a business.

Nobody who had anything actually to do with the outcome of that game thought for a second the deciding game of the WS would be called. They all know the commissioner has the final say on how the game is run and that no commissioner, Selig or otherwise, would allow the WS to be finished by a called game.

I totally agree that Selig handled the timing of the whole thing horribly. The weather report was obvious going into the game and he just rolled over for Fox. The game should have been postponed before it even started, and at the least suspended much earlier than it was.

Both teams have said they were told in meetings on Saturday, when weather first became a potential issue that there would be no rain shortened outcomes in the World Series.
So it wasn't an issue. That decision was already made.
These are the problems with this, as far as I can see:
1) The teams petitioned the league to move the start time up, FOX said no.
2) The game should have never started, once it had already started raining before game time, and there appeared to be no end in sight.
3) Once the game was started, and Selig came to the conclusion that they he didn't want the teams to play four innings, to postpone the game, to start from scratch again on another day (since it wouldn't be official), the game should have been suspended at the end of the 5th when the Phillies were leading 2-1. Nobody would have said a word about it. The Phillies already knew that this was MLB's decision before this came up.
That top of the 6th was a joke, and it was blatantly obvious to everyone that they were praying the Rays would tie the game so they could suspend it and not have to deal with the potential backlash of suspending the game, when the original rule is that it should be called.
As a result, they made a bad situation that much worse. I don't think people in Philadelphia are even really complaining about them saying they would not call the game an let the Phillies win 2-1 in five.
I think people get why that would be bad.
But people are absolutely pissed about them playing that extra inning, where Hamels couldn't even plant on the mound, Rollins could field a ground ball he gets 99% of the time...the whole thing was a joke.

And Selig is the most spineless weasel because of this particular part of it.
That douchebag stands up there and tries to put on this facade of "I call my own shots" and "this is not a democracy."
Hey Bud, if you're really this man's man of a commissioner you claim to be, why didn't you have the balls to suspend the game in the 5th, stand up in front of the press, and say "Look, the Phillies are winning...if it was the regular season, yeah, it'd be postponed, but this is to protect the integrity of the game."

even more, he should not have started the game in the first place. he had good weather reports, he knew what was coming, but because the teams wanted to play, the gm's wanted to play, the umpires, the grounds crew, everyone said they wanted to play. even though he knew better, he caved to everyone's wishes. and the very thing he was afraid would happen did. he has no one to blame but himself.
Steve Phillips, of all people, just made a pretty good point.
They could have played this game last night. There was not a trace of rain from 6:30 on.
Interestingly enough, though, Tuesday nights is when FOX airs its highest rated TV show, House.

If you read "Moneyball," it details how Bradford developed his pitching style. His father had a stroke, I believe, which resulted in a John McCain-like condition where he cannot elevate his arms over his head, so when young Chad played catch with his father, he imitated the way his father threw. Amazing that a guy who never learned to pitch the "correct" way can make it all the way to the big leagues.

Even after the other day when the game was suspended all you heard was how the momentum was now in the Rays favor because Hamels couldn't get the win and wouldn't start again.
Yeah despite the fact that they were still down 3 games to 1.
Well I guess momentum took a shit all over the Rays.
On another note what's with all this shit about the city of Philadelphia not winning anything " since 1980 " ?

Now that Philly's off the hook as the city with a team in all 4 major leagues that has gone the longest without a championship, what city is on the hook?
I'm thinking San Francisco, if you count the San Jose Sharks as being there: no World Series for the Giants since 1954 (when they were still in New York), no Super Bowls for the '49ers since 1994 and for the Raiders since 1983, no NBA Championship for the Warriors since 1975, no Stanley Cup ever for the Sharks. That's your new Loser Town right there.
But I'd much rather live in Frisco than Philly.

We may not win the WS as many times as some other teams do, but when it happens, it's always a special moment for a team that plays well together and was built over a period of 5-10 years, not bought by the Evil Empire.
And kudos to the Tampa Bay Rays. I hope history will not forget that it was not that they only won one game, but that they made the Phillies earn their four. Hell of a team, hell of a skipper.

I'd say that the new loser town is Cleveland. Runners-up in the NBA championship last year, no world series since 1948, when their opponent was the Boston Braves, and no Superbowls for the Browns, unless you could the one they won as the Baltimore Ravens (which you shouldn't). And to me, Cleveland seems like it cares about it sports much more than SF, so it probably hurts them more to be without a champion in such a long time.
I was at the park. I paraded down Broad Street

I didn't give a shit who won the WS a week or so ago but I got so sick of hearing about the Rays and all their " don't quit " bullshit.
How often do they think they should win titles ?
Selfish bastards.
well, how often do the yankees think they should win it? every year, right? and so they should, why else play? by selfish, do you think we should "let someone else have it every once in a while"? fuck that. you have to earn it.
we obviously are a long way from earning that sense of entitlement that the yankees have, but this is a step in the right direction. now we have to build on this.

Members of 304th Civil Affairs Brigade, based on Woodhaven Road in Northeast Philadelphia but currently stationed in Camp Slayer, Baghdad, celebrate the Phillies as World Series champions on one of their MRAP (Mine Resistant Ambush Protected) vehicles. "We are having the name of the street on the base where our unit is located changed from Victory Lane to Broad Street in honor of the Phillies," said Col. Chuck Wogan, deputy commander of the brigade, in an e-mail from Baghdad.
Nice find, Furtherman.
One thing that's pissing me off about today are people like Buster Olney, Peter Gammons, and Skip Bayliss suggesting that the weather problems in this series mean that baseball needs to move the World Series to a neutral site.
That would be the DEATH of the World Series. It'd be as utterly meaningless and lifeless as a Super Bowl.
I can't tell you how many people just reveled in the fact that they were standing OUTSIDE the stadium last night, watching the game, so they could take part in the celebration afterwards.
Why rob people of that?
Oh, and Joe Buck's call of the final out sucks a fat cock.

They need to make up their minds on Burrell and Moyer.
I love Burrell, but I would seriously entertain trading the team's top two prospects, Carlos Carrasco and Lou Marson, for Matt Holliday.
They can afford to do this. Ruiz is a perfectly adequate catcher, and they have other pitching prospects on the way.
Moyer, I'd bring back for a reasonable price. If someone outbids you for them, you tip your hat and move on.
I'd make an offer to bring back Scott Eyre for the bullpen, but I think it's unlikely they can keep him. He'll get a nice offer based on his late season success, and the shortage of lefty relievers.
Other than a potential big trade for a guy like Holliday, or a pitcher, I don't expect them to do much this offseason, because with all the arbitration guys they have, they're not going to have a TON of money to spend.
But, this team should be right in the thick again next year, and one of the favorites to win the NL again with the Cubs.

If I were Moyer, I would retire on this high note. He would be such an excellent minor league pitching coach, the Phillies should offer him that if we can get a front line starter to take his place. I understand that that is a HUGE "if", but I hear Sabbathia is still available.
as far as Burrell, I say keep him unless you can get Manny or Halliday.
as long as I'm wishing, I'd like my own luxury box. thanks.

Moyer said he's definitely pitching next year, and he wants to be in Philadelphia, but he doesn't want to be lowballed.
I can't see the Phillies coming up with enough money for Sabathia. Their salaries are going to escalate big time this offseason.
Derek Lowe may be an option, though. But honestly, the most likely thing is Hamels-Myers-Blanton-Moyer-Happ next season, and making no changes to the pitching staff.

When I was watching it live, I had the tv sound turned off and put on Harry. I tivo'd it and watched it again last night, and wanted to hear how bad buck's call really was. I hate Joe Buck, but I didn't think the call was that bad. All he said was "The Phillies are the World Champions" and then shut the fuck up. he let the pictures tell the story rather than fuck it up with what would most assuredly be douchebag commentary. yes, but what he is to Hamels he could be to a whole generation of prospects. that's why I say put him in the minors as opposed to keeping him here. Hamels doesn't really need a mentor anymore: he's proven that he is the ace beyond all doubt. Moyer should take up another project and turn *him* or *them* into aces.

I heard on the way in-I left my house at 9:30, there were a million people on the parade route already.
So I wouldn't disbelieve a 3-4 million count.
One of the coolest things was how great the cops were. They let you drink, carry on, smoke a j, whatever. As long as you weren't blowing it in their faces, or interfering with the parade route, you were good to go. I had my kids, so no drinking for me, and I haven't smoked a spliff in 20 years, but everyone had a good time, I can assure you of that.
They were even giving the crowd "High 5vs" while instructing us to stay back on the curb.
What an awesome day.
Here's the clip...Utley was obviously hammered. So was Werth.
You could see it on their faces as they were walking around the field.

First things first. My boy went back to the Phillies yesterday and actually got his fedora back. (Charlie Manuel traded him for his World Series cap after game 5. Then did his Comcast interview wearing it) Apparently my friend had it made and didnt buy it like that. As soon as the buses got there, Charlie Manuel sees him, and my boy hands him the hat again, which he puts on as the bus drives away. Hilarious.
Also Victorino and Werth were awesome. They shook our hands and we handed them a bottle of champagne which they opened and started spraying all over us. Including my 1 year old that I had sitting on my shoulders.
What an incredible day.
Here are a few of my pictures from today...

I'm reading this thread while listening to Ron's soliloquy, and it's just fucking amazing. I was there today, and words cannot express what occurred. I'm 29, and this was my first parade. It was insane!
"Every Once In A While You Get A Hold Of The Ball And Fucking Ride It Out!"
Up the Phillies and Philadelphia! We finally did good.
The Chris Wheeler dance is the newest craze that's sweeping the nation. All the young kids are doing it...

I gotta get my pics uploaded, but BOY was it an amazing day today. Everyone was smiling and having fun. I got to hang out at the corner of Broad and Walnut for the start of the parade, walked back to my friend's place and drove down to the stadium. We parked right near the food distribution center, got real lucky with a spot. Enjoyed the rest of the day at the stadium.
What a powerful and incredible feeling to have and cherish for the rest of my life. When the 2008 Pennant Flag FINALLY unrolled in the wind I couldn't do anything but stare up there and get excited about next season.
The Utley thing should have happened, but whatev. Not gonna make a big deal out of something so small, although he will prob be fined.
I got to talk to Angelo Cataldi again today. That was nice.
All in all I am happy all of you had such a wonderful time. Except for Septa issues, the thing went off excellent. Happy to share it with all of you, and glad to have discussed the 2008 Championship Season with all of you.
Here's to now and beyond! :drunk:

I think Mayor Nutter put the fear of the wrath of God in everyone about what would happen if they didn't take public transportation today, because it seemed like everyone did.
We ended up driving in...got there about an hour before hand, and there were TONS of empty spots in the Citizens Bank parking lot (and it was free to park).
Traffic kind of sucked a little on the way out, but not as badly as I expected for 2.5 million.
Meanwhile, driving by some of the stations, it looked like it was a nightmare to get home on public transport afterwards.

I had absolutely no problem with the Chase Utley speech. I dont think he couldve summed up the cities sentiment any more perfectly.

wow, this thread could use a bump.
so with amaro as the new gm, and arbuckle gone, what does everyone think the immediate future of the phillies is?

Amaro will be fine; Arbuckle's actually kind of overrated.
They'll sign Moyer, Eyre, and someone like Rocco Baldelli and call it an offseason.
Should be enough to win the division again. We'll see what happens afterwards.

they'd better do more than sign Moyer, Eyre, and Baldelli.
there are also some significant arbitration-eligible cases, such as Howard and Hammels that had better be done right.

They won't.
The arbitration cases are going to kill their books, so they're not going to sign Manny or C.C, and the free agent outfield crop is horrible this year.
They'll get better from within, though.
Lou Marson's going to be an unbelievable offensive catcher. He'll take Coste's spot, most likely. Carlos Carrasco is one of the best pitching prospects in baseball. Either he or J.A. Happ will be the #5 starter.
Having one of them in the rotation for an entire season will be a huge upgrade.
If the only moves they make are Moyer, Eyre, and Baldelli, I'm confident that this team will be in the NLCS again next season, barring injury.

even if you did nothing, the mets would have to get manny, cc, and fuentes or k rod to be serious contenders
Saw this on MLBTradeRumors
The Phillies control setup man Ryan Madson through 2009, but he's represented by Scott Boras. Boras compared Madson to Mariano Rivera circa 1996, so don't look for an affordable long-term deal.
Have I mentioned how much I hate Scott Boras?

So whom is the pressure on for the next 12 months:
-Eagles, Flyers, and/or Sixers to follow in the Phillies' Championship footsteps
- The Phillies to repeat
-Both
- No one, our need for a Champion has been fulfilled for the next 25 years

I'd say no one for the next couple of years.
The Phillies winning has taken the edge off a lot of the city, at least in the short term.
You could make a case, however, that if the Eagles don't step up, they could drop to #2 in the city.

to respond to my own poll, I would say that the pressure will be on the phillies to repeat, but it will be tough. think of the letdown if we do anything less next year, especially if the mets do better than we!

Pressure is on the Phils. They will have core parts of this championship team back, and they are defending.
The Birds should have been back to the Super Bowl, this is one I would like to see.
Sixers are expected to be a player this year, but they are losing in crappcrappy ways so far this season.
Flyers should be back in the hunt also. they are good.
