Do you need help with something specific? I've set up a few in my day.

I set them up all the time.
It's one of the easiest things you can do.

unless you have a new laptop with some funky protection on it, then it is a pain in the ass

Been pretty happy with my Linksys wrt34gs, but when I activated wpa, I kept getting disconects under load.

Shoot forward to a couple of days ago - I installed the dd-wrt firmware (3rd party) - damn not only does my wireless seem faster, but no disconnects. As a test I set up a 100 Meg file transfer and went out. I expected to come home to see the file wasnt there (due to a disconnect) - lo and behold it made it!

Great stuff.

Btw I have a version 1 of this router, so I have the one with lots of memory - later versions they got cheap on the memory.

oh, and dont forget to change channels (neighbors with wireless can interfere) and dump the 2.4 Ghz phones - constant problem. Other than that, it's simple. Get it working first, then add the WPA security.

painless.

Thanks for the words of encouragment...

I've been rolling pretty unsecurely, so I decided with a new all-in-one wireless printer I'd bump up to WPA PSK. The printer was a while to get going. Not that it was too problematic, but using a fax interface to meet with a network took a little bit of reading and a lot of fiddling. Not too bad..
______________

Then I did my basement comp.. Reading up on the different WPA modes I figured out I was WPA PSK. After an hour or two I was connected on and off.. and on and off.. Turns out the Belkin app, was configured, but xp was not, and both were fighting for wireless.. duh. Okay fixed.
______________

Now, I've got a new'ish HP 9000 laptop with internal wireless. I figure finally an easy one.

Newtwork name: linksys_SES__23904852
[x] WPA PSK
[x]TKIP
key XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
confirm key XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

Try HP support. They point me to Microsoft support :annoyed:

Nuttin.. fug.. Try again.. nuttin. ..delete profile.. Try again.. nuttin..
Give up..:surrender:

Not sure whats up.
______________

Move to next old Dell laptop.. Turns out WPA is not supported without service pack II. Now I am in the middle of installing SPII.. :glurps:

Mah.
______________

I cant figure why the HP won't work. Unless it does not have SPII too.

Never had encryption on my network, because I was too lazy to set it up on the 3 computers, tivo and xbox. Today I was opening some ports on my router, and noticed 3 neighbors were using my connection. Encryption is on now, heh. Aside from that...

My mother's internet connection was always much slower than mine, until today I reformatted the hard drive and put a lighter version of windows on there, minus the crapware that hp puts on there. We both have similar processors, same router, windows version, but now her connection is very noticably faster than mine. I have roadrunner cable , she has earthlink DSL. With a torrent programming downloading on her computer at 400 kb/s can still browse without noticing a difference. With my computer, downloading with a torrent downloader at even slow rates ( 10 kb/s ) browsing is significantly slowed, sometimes timing out. And if I stop downloads I still have to hit the reset button on the router to get back to a reasonable browsing speed. I was shocked today when I was able to download a 1 gig file on her computer in under an hour, when with mine I'd have to leave it on overnight.

Both computers have the ports opened, and firewalls turned off. Only difference in the two setups as far as I can tell is she has DSL, I have cable. Other than that my processor is faster, and I have more RAM. Ive looked at third party firware for the router but it looked complicated for my version (wrt54gs v6 which is the same router and version as hers anyway).

Any thoughts?

with cable you need to throttle your connections for Bit Torrent.

if you use azereus, then set your

Max Connections Globally = 34
Max Connections Per Torent Default = 9

try that first and let me know how it goes. it does not affect anything except allowing you to browse and DL at the same time

WPA can't be used on a Nintendo DS, only supports up to WEP.

So yeah, just in case you wanted to do that.

It helped a little bit, I don't have to reset the router when I try to browse, but I still have to stop all downloads, then it slowly comes back to where I can browse comfortably. My speeds downloading seem to top off higher than DSL, but she can do more things at once. I didn't know there was such a difference. thanks.
