I don't get the vibe that there are many hip hop fans here, but I had to post about the Roots show I went to last night at the Nokia Theatre. It was the 10th time I've seen them in the past 5 years and this show is rated at or near the top of the list.
The concept of the Hip Hop Honors Tour was that the Roots would cover classic songs through the history of hip hop, given them the twist of being performed by a live band. MC Lyte and Big Daddy Kane were a part of the show and came out to join the Roots a couple of times during the 2 and a half hour (!!!) set.
The two highlights for me were:
1. A cover of the Wu-Tang Clan's Protect Ya Neck where MC Black Thought did EVERY verse of the song in the voice of the original Wu-Tang Rapper. He was dead on. (Note: One of the best songs off of their "Tipping Point" album was WEB, where BT did the voices of Kool G Rap and Big Daddy Kane so well most people thought they were really on the album)
2. A cover of Kool G Rap's Men at Work which proved to me that Black Thought is the best LIVE rapper ever. I will scour the net to see if this is out there anywhere.
Even if you aren't a hip hop fan you may be able to dig the Roots. I had some of there cds but never went nuts about them until I saw them live for the first time in 2003. You download some live shows for free at http://www.therootslive.com to see if you're into it.
