I'm putting together a project for Liz and it's beginning to burn me out. I'm trying to generate a mixtape of famous (read: commercially and/or critically successful) music acts that are primarily known from being from New York or New Jersey.
This is the list I have so far:
Bruce
Bon Jovi
Frank Sinatra
Smithereens
Southside Johnny
Skid Row
Lou Reed
Velvet Underground
Wyclef Jean
Billy Joel
Ramones
Barry Manilow
STP (two members from Jersey)
Blues Traveller
Spin Doctors
Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons
Stray Cats
Brian Setzer Orchestra
Wallflowers
Twisted Sister
Sugarhill Gang
Run DMC
LL Cool J
(70 percent of all East Coast Rap, got it Jay-Z, Biggie, Diddy, etc... the mix tape doesn't include much rap so we can leave those acts out)
Lenny Kravitz
Kool and the Gang
Joan Jett
Eddie Money
Gnarls Barkley (Danger Mouse)
House of Pain/Everlast
Jane's Addiction/Porno for Pyros/Satellite Party (Perry is from NYC)
KISS
Beastie Boys
Blue Oyster Cult
Moby
Neil Diamond
Talking Heads
(Streisand... again, not on the Mix Tape so leaving out)
I know I'm missing a lot. Anybody?

House of Pain and Everlast are from Cali. I think Everlast and Danny Boy were born in NY but both grew up in Cali.

Considering they were born in NYC and HoP's only video was from New York's St. Patrick's Day parade, I think they count as being New York branded.

I have to disagree with Jane's Addiction. I've always seen them as an L.A. band. Then again, i did not know that Perry was from NY, so maybe i don't know shit.

And right now is it me or is the hottest scene for rock/alternative (to what I don't know) in Texas, Austin to be very specific?
It's crazy to think that's the way it has evolved.

I'd say yes. Critically successful. So says the former record reviewer for "The Audiophile Voice". Now it's official.

I don't think you should count people who are from other places but got their start in NY. NY's a pretty big place for a lot of entertainers to get their start.
Under that rationale, most actors are from Hollywood because that's where they got their start.

as much as long island bands

it reminds me of the NY movie list from earlier in the year: there are movies set in ny ('godfather'), but really don't have any NY presence ... unlike 'manhattan,' 'after hours' or '25th hour' where the city is almost a character
