Since this game really doesn't matter all that much, it's probably a good night to rest Abreu, Matsui, and Posada, simultaneously.

Hughes took a big step forward tonight. He pitched beautifully tonight. I don't care about the HR, even the best pitchers will make a mistake here and there. He stayed aggressive, hit his spots and controlled the strike zone. 6 IP 2 Runs, I'll take that every time.

Doctor Z

We deserve to lose this game. We get a lead-off double from Molina, bunt him over to 3rd, and with 1 out, we leave him standing there, 90 feet away from tying the game.

That's terrific baseball.

Incredible.

Hahaha....I loved it. Brought me little closer to the top spot for ERA and WHIP in my league.

My getting screwed today was Buerle, who pitched great, but didn't get the W.
The guy has a 3.39 ERA in the AL and only has 9 wins. FU**IN CHISOX!!!!

All anyone wanted to talk about on the radio today was A-Rod. He had a great night, but for the Yanks to have a shot of winning it all this year they're going to need a 3rd/4th starter in the playoffs. Who knows whats going on with Clemens, and at 45 I don't think you can count on him anyway. To me the big thing that happened last night was watching Hughes (hopefully) turn a corner and look like the pitcher we all kept hearing about. He hit 94 on the gun a few times, commanded his stuff and located beautifully. I'm still excited today about the way Hughes pitched last night and can't wait till his next start. Kennedy too, he's a possible backup plan if Clemens can't go. I don't want to see Mussina anymore, especially in a big game. I've seen enough of him.

Does anyone else find it remarkable that Wang has 17 wins (tied with only Beckett for the most in the majors), and he started the first MONTH of the season on the DL? He has more wins than any other pitcher, and skipped a month of the season! Missed 20 wins by 1 last year. Probably do the same again this year. Dammit. It'll happen eventually.

Wang is very good, he just doesn't get hyped for a lot of reasons. Pettite has pitched even better than Wang this year and has less to show for it. Wang gets a lot of decisions because he tends to go deep in games. There's no point for hitters to take pitches against him, he throws strikes and the ball is hittable, it just ends up getting beat into the ground all night long. Wang is the type of pitcher hitters think they can handle, he doesn't do anything eye popping. And then the next thing they know they went 0-4 and hit into two double plays that night. Very good and very underrated.

BTW-If you like Wang, you'll like Humberto Sanchez too (The guy they got in the Sheffield trade) Same type of pitcher, features a very hard and heavy 2-seamer and mixes in sliders and 4 seamers. He's out with Tommy John, should be pitching for them sometime next year if all goes well. Could see him in the bullpen late next year, starting afterwards.

yea i def agree with that......another thing that i believe keeps Wang off the radar is he doesn't strike guys out. instead he just gets them to ground out. he just gets over looked because he doesn't have a 97 mph fastball that he blows by hitters. instead he has a nasty sinker that's probably harder to hit then most fastballs.

exactly what i was saying above. which is why i do not think he will ever win a cy young. he does not have the stats to back up his wins. he is not a power pitcher. he gets so many ground balls and double plays.

Are you hoping they might still get the division? I dont think they will. The Bosox lead the league in ERA, I don't see them going into any prolonged slumps anytime soon.

Now that the Yanks have a 3 game lead in the WC, I'm pretty much rooting for Cleveland from here out. Bosox have the best record, so that means they would play the worst record outside of their own division. Right now thats Cleveland, but the Angels are only one ahead of them. I want the Yanks to play Cleveland in the ALDS, let Boston knock out the Angels and then we play Boston for the ALCS. I think thats the best case scenario for the Yanks right now.

Just to go back to the issue of Wang's wins...wins and losses are some of the worst stats to rate a pitcher by since they more often than not reflect on the team's performance during the start than the pitchers.

well only if you combine it with run support, ERA, and BAA

if someone has 6.5 run support per game, it is not crazy to think they should have 12+ wins. then you look at Randy Johnson Cy young years where he had a good record, but crazy strikeouts and ERA.

right now his era 3.68 vs Beckett who is 3.30 with almost double the strikeouts.

I'm not saying Wang is a bad pitcher...far from it...but it's just a pet peeve to see pitching wins tossed out their on their own as if they trump the other stats when really taken on their own they're probably the most inaccurate pitching stat available. It especially bugs me that unless a pitcher wins 15 games or so a year they're almost always ignored for Cy Young consideration.

I agree. my gripe with Wang never being considered is the same, they like to see the 20 game winner with strikeouts. i think stats like winning after 2-3 losses in a row, or how many wins came against division rivals or teams over .500

but why not give the cy young to the most wins and MVP to most homeruns, even if they are on last place teams

Kennedy is pitching scared tonight. His nibbling is driving me nuts. Either he just has nothing, or he and Posada just aren't a match.
I wonder about Posada with the kid pitchers. Posada's a very intense guy, and I could see him adding to their angst on the mound. Molina on the other hand, is a very calm, laid back presence. Know who caught Kennedy in his first outing? Thats right, Molina. Know who caught Hughes in that nice outing he had the other day, first good one in over a month? That would be Molina.

Of course now that I said that, Kennedy just had a 1,2,3.

Holy shit, I don't believe it... I'm listening to the post-game on the radio, and Sterling blew another homerun call...
How does this guy keep his job?

It seems like he literally does this every night. Typically, an announcer MAYBE blows a HR call once, perhaps twice a season, and it happens so seldom that when it does, it makes for funny sound clips on O&A. You'd think he'd see such a reoccurring problem, and maybe start waiting to MAKE SURE it's gone before making the call. But no. He shamelessly blows calls, night after night. It's honestly embarrassing. Embarrassing.

Well yeah sure, but I still wonder about Posada. He's always had a bad rap about his pitch selection and he doesn't have much patience in general. You could see the interaction between the him and Kennedy and I thought it wasn't good. Plus the announcers (in particular Flaherty) kept wondering why he kept calling for the curveball when anyone familiar with Kennedy knows its his least effective pitch.

About contradicting myself, I'm just commenting on the game as it happens. I don't think any of my posts or opinions are written in stone and shouldn't be taken as such.

51 HR's 20-something games left. Is it too soon to start thinking about 61? I don't think so.

Maris had 56 on September 9th, and didn't hit 61 until the last day of the season.

Ruth on the other hand, hit 20 of his 60 in the last 32 games, 17 of them in September. Which would actually put A-Rod right around if not ahead of Ruth's pace.

EDIT-I cant find a time line, but Ruth had either 48 or 49 on September 9th. So A-Rod is ahead of his pace.

Doctor Z

Yeah, he'd have to have another month like April where he hit 14. But he looks like he's in the middle of another April-like hot streak right now. September is always a good month to pad stats, half the teams you play are out of it and playing like they're double parked.

If he gets to 55 in the next week, then its on. That will mean two weeks to play and 6 to go.

You want to hear something depressing? Even if we sweep the Bosox next week, we would still end up playing the Angels. The Angels would move ahead of the Bosox for best record, and would play the wild card winner. The only sure way to avoid the Angels is to win the division. And even if the Yanks swept the Bosox (in Boston, not likely) you're still 2 behind.

Looks like were playing the Angels unless someone has a serious bad stretch.

B) What was the whole shoulder thing about in the bullpen today when A-Rod hit his 2nd HR? Is it just cuz A-Rod tends to do that after he gets a hit?
C) What does Damon mean by "he's trying to win an Oscar"?
D) We're DUE to beat the Angels in the post-season eventually! And if you don't believe in DUE, then TOO BAD! Those fuckers are going down once and for all.

It still amazes me that a team like the Yankees, with such a deep history of winning and legendary sluggers, hasn't had a 50-HR hitter since Maris in 1961. That's just strange to me.

even more, it's crazy that this is the all-time record for homers by a yankee right-hander.

Make no mistake, another fast, first-round exit from the playoffs will almost guarantee the end of the Torre era. Joe Girardi would be next, and a decade of Torre's brilliance would be forever diminished by the final seven years of his tenure, during which the Yankees were shut out of a world championship.

The thing that blows me away about Kennedy is he gets BETTER 2nd and 3rd time through the lineup. Usually thats the case with veteran pitchers, they see whats working and make adjustments. He's doing that and he's only 22. Very impressive.

I'm also glad Joe noticed what I did and matched him up with Molina again. I really hope they bring back Molina next year, he's the best backup catcher they've had since Girardi, and he complements Posada well since his style is so different.

He seems to be getting better with his early struggles as well. Much smoother this time out. When he's on, he's like Wang. Doesn't blow anyone away, but just gets lots of quick outs. His pitch count is 59 going into the 6th.

Now I just wonder if he has an innings limit like so many young pitchers do. He threw a full season in A-AA-AAA this year, compiling something like 140 innings. Add the 17ish he's had in the bigs and he could be approaching his ceiling soon. Or maybe not, he's not a hard thrower and the Yanks may not be as worried about him as they would be about Joba or Hughes. I don't know, but I'd love to find out what Cashman thinks about this.

I'm so sick of Alex Rodriguez.

Don't be too sick, he might be playing for you next year (http://www.nysun.com/article/62362)

Yankees fans aren't going to want to hear this, but the Boston Red Sox, the second-richest team in baseball, have an enormous amount of money to spend. Curt Schilling, Matt Clement, Mike Lowell, and Eric Hinske, among others, will all be free agents at the end of this year, leaving the Sox with few holes on their team and nearly $50 million to spend. After next year they'll be free of $28 million in obligations to Manny Ramirez and Jason Varitek. In 2004, they demonstrated their willingness to go to near-absurd lengths to lay hands on Rodriguez, and of course little could be a more worthy expenditure than grabbing their top rival's best player to fill a position of need. It sounds sensational, but there truly isn't a better fit for Rodriguez, and the smart money looks to be either on him making his way to Boston, or on the threat of his doing so forcing the Yankee chieftains to relent and make a liar out of their GM. This will cause great glee for Sox fans either way.

After the Red Sox, the next-most sensible destination for Rodriguez is with the Los Angeles Dodgers. They're as rich as any team outside the American League East, they have real money to throw around, and they have a productive farm system that will allow them to replace their free agents from within. Simply letting veterans Randy Wolf, Jeff Kent, and Luis Gonzalez go this fall would free up enough to pay Rodriguez, and after next year, Rafael Furcal, Nomar Garciaparra, and Derek Lowe will be off their books, freeing up another $30 million. Money, glamour, and freedom from the crushing pressure of the East Coast all make the Dodgers a favorite.

I agree totally. If they don't work out a contract extension, he's gone.
And its not the end of the world. The Yanks will be built around young pitching in the coming years. They can always find position players on the free agent market, for a lot less than A-Rod will cost.

Lots of awkward in's and out's to this game tonight... Like Melky's non-catch in center that turned out to be the only Toronto run (till the 9th), the 1-hitter from a rookie, then Melky redeeming himself by driving in the game-winning runs on a 2-out base hit to right, which never actually happened, on account of a diving stop. Then it's a 1-1 game in the bottom of the 9th, and Chris Britton (who I hope penciled himself out of the post-season roster tonight) did everything in his power to have the game end as quickly as possible.
Definitely a tough loss... I just hope the Yankees can shake this one off going into Boston tomorrow.

You know, I just thought of something, and Torre might be smarter than we thought.

He knows the Yankees have to travel, and he knows they are playing tomorrow. He saw the chance of a protracted, long game when there's a much more important game happening tomorrow. So instead of burning his pen of his good arms, he sends Britton out there. He understands that the chances of winning the division are slim at best and no matter what, we're facing the Angels.

So he sends Britton out and hopes for the best, rather than wasting Mo's or Farnsworth's arms when they'll be more needed tomorrow.

If A-Rod struck out with the bases jacked in Fenway in that situation, all of a sudden we're hearing that he's lost it and maybe can't handle the real pressure.

I fucking hate losing to the Sawx.

"Oh, that doesn't smell like Scarlett? I apologize, Scarlett's so tight she got my pinky. I gave you the index which belongs to Jessica Beil."

I wasn't, until I heard Cashman say that on Kay's show this afternoon. Nice management of resources, Joe. Use him 2 innings in a 4-0 game. I actually heard Torre asked about the Joba rules on Mike and the MadDog (http://www.wfan.com/pages/744503.php)and he didn't even know whether they were changed, or if he could use Joba tonight.

They should have played him at 1b.

Rodriguez Is Worth a Few More Wins, but Not $30 Million (http://www.nytimes.com/2007/09/16/sports/baseball/16score.html?ref=baseball)

The Blue Jays, for example, just signed a two-year extension with John McDonald, who compiled a putrid .267 on-base percentage and .321 slugging percentage through Friday, even though he benefits from playing in the hitter-friendly Rogers Center. McDonald is a far superior fielder to Rodriguez, but nonetheless, if Toronto had shelled out for Rodriguez instead, their 2008 record would probably be about nine games better.

Nine victories is thus about the maximum contribution Rodriguez could make to a new employer in 2008. But he is 32, and although he is likely to age well — he has retained his speed and is remarkably durable — a decline over time is inevitable.

But is Rodriguez worth $30 million a year? Not close. Silver wrote that teams on the playoff bubble — those expecting to win 83 to 94 games — collect an additional $2.6 million in revenue for every extra game they win, on average. If the industry continues to grow at a healthy rate, those figures should increase by 8 percent a year.

Thus, if he played for a team like the White Sox, Rodriguez could be expected to generate $25 million of revenue in 2008, $24 million in 2009, $17 million in 2010 and 2011, and $16 million in 2012, for a total of a little less than $100 million over five years. He is hoping to sign for about 50 percent more, and perhaps with another year or two tacked on once he is well into his twilight years.

Good article breaking down the economics and baseball impact. I still feel that NY makes the most sense for both parties. If he leaves for an extra few mil the Yanks will be fine, he probably won't. He'll be back 'in Texas', either literally or figuratively. I also still feel the Red Sox stuff is a bluff. Theo pinched pennies for years over Manny's deal, he won't want to sign up for another 8 years of that with A-Rod. As the article shows, no player is "worth" 30 mil either for the bottom line or on the field.

Also, I think that Cashman is serious when he says he'll walk away and not bid after the window closes. To give A-Rod 30+ per will cost the Yanks 42 mil per with the 40% luxury tax. Even they can't afford that for any one player. An extension which factors in the Texas money is the only sensible way I see for the Yanks to retain him. We'll know in early November whether A-Rod returns or not.

But then you wouldn't get Mike Lowell back (http://www.fannation.com/truth_and_rumors/mlb?page=3):

While free agent-to-be Curt Schilling has expressed hesitancy playing for the Yankees next year, the same can't be said for Red Sox third baseman Mike Lowell. The 33-year-old, however, wants to make it clear that the idea of playing in New York has less to do with a potential opening or how much money might be offered and more to do with his history with the organization.

But then you wouldn't get Mike Lowell back (http://www.fannation.com/truth_and_rumors/mlb?page=3):

They traded him away for nothing because they signed Drew Henson. They resigned Broscius for 2 years and figured Henson would take over after that. What a disaster. Until they got A-Rod, that trade always bugged the shit out of me.

Detroit never loses anymore. I think thats 9-2 in the last 11.

I still don't think they catch the Yanks. Yankee schedule gets easy from here on out, and even Baltimore lost Bedard AND Guthrie. So they should be fine.

Cleveland and LA Angels both lost, so they're both still tied for 2nd in the league.
