I hope this series goes 5 and Boston gets to face a tired pitching staff. No matter who moves on Boston wins.

Here's the main point for the retarded/HHH, the league will never truly grow outside of the big four (mets, sox, yanks, cubs). The only thing that continues to happen, is other teams lose their home base of fans to these teams bc it's just no fun to root for the Pirates, Rays and so many other teams. And hey, the others are always on and covered on every ESPN network to a point of saturation. So why is it the NFL can balance it and not MLB. Comments/opinions like they made during the broadcast. But hey, the only thing they bring to the table is knowledge of each other. Yeah! Push it!

And yes, it's a rip on the fans having a myopic view of baseball, and having no knowledge of the overall league...like the TBS crew as well.
Heres a picture of Long Duck Dong to cheer you up Spoon.

Hughes throws the liveliest 92 MPH fastball you'll ever see. If you ignore the radar gun, you think the thing is going 10 MPH faster than it actually is. Mariano is the same way. Never breaks 96, but guys can't touch it and someone like Farnsworth throws 100 and it gets tattooed.
I don't know what happened, but when he started in Tampa towards the end of the season he looked like the pitcher he was before he got hurt in Texas when he threw the 7 inning no hitter. It all just seemed to click in again. Maybe he's just settling in and not overthrowing. But he looks great.

look you can change your "main" point all you want, what you just said here I have to admit I agree with. All im saying is what you said before about anybody outside of NY not picking Colorado/Arizona was wrong and a flat out stupid statement. i chose to call you out on it. Out of the four years i've known you on this board i dont think ive ever heard you say, 'oh shit youre right, im wrong, my bad' not just to me, to anybody. the second somebody actually does prove you wrong you just shift your statement to a more well thought out and accuarte point. its almost as if you have self confidence issues and you cant admit youre wrong. i agree with what youre saying about over-saturation, but the point is you were wrong before.

My only thought is to save him fresh for game 5. But why is Joba in? Tomorrow is still an elimination game and you have a 5-run lead. THIS is where Viz and Ohlendorf and others should be pitching.

you obviously never tried. You look for the spin on the ball to tell what pitch it is. Its alot harder to see that through bugs what spin is on a ball then for a pitcher to simply see where a glove is when the glove is big and not moving

would u rather that grand slam happened or Joba closing the door? look at how shitty our relief has been this year. remember its the playoffs, the joba rules are out the door except for the fact that if he gets up he's comming in. its lose or go home, you gotta go in for the kill if you have the opportunity, not let the indians hang around by giving the other shitty relievers the ball.

As much as I hate to utter these words Tenbats is right. Hughes was at 63 pitches, there was no need to pull him out. Joba threw 38 pitches. So he's pretty much shot for tomorrow. Maybe you can get one inning, maybe. But thats pushing it. You'll need Wang to go deep. If he doesn't, Hughes is out, Joba is out. Basically, if Wang doesn't have it, were totally fucked. Mussina will be our backup plan. Farnsworth and Viz are our 7th and 8th inning guys.

no, it wasnt a bad move by Joe. if he brought someone like Farnsworth in and he got lit up you would have called for Joe's head. He made the correct call here and you're still bashing him. First of all, re read my post. I edited it and added what I thought he should do.
I think he should have left Hughes in there for another inning. He was at 63 pitches, there was no reason he couldn't give you one more. Especially when you consider he wont be used again for a week even if he gets the third slot in the next round.
Second, if you cant bring in Viz, Farnsworth or Veras in an 8-3 game, why are they even on the roster? You could have brought one of them in and warmed up Joba behind them if they got in trouble. But Joe doesn't do that, and its part of his hideous use of the bullpen. He doesn't believe in backing guys up.

would i have left hughes in? absolutely.......so i agree with you there. those guys are on the roster because theyre literally the best of the worst. you cant argue that theyre shitty relievers. and we obviously cant debate it because its a non-issue but you know if Joe brought one of those guys in and they got lit up you would have bitched Joe out. so basically he couldnt use those guys, thus like Abraham said he basically had no choice if he was gonna go to the pen.

10-07-2007, 06:19 PM
tenbats is absolutely right. Its so pointless, it wasnt a tight game where you NEEDED to shut them down right now. And 63 pitches, shit i woulda let hughes go 2 more innings if he kept gettin outs, you wont use him for at least 4 or 5 days anyway
awful work of the bullpen tonight by torre, i think he just wants to be gone
Tenbatsuzen
10-07-2007, 06:22 PM
If I was managing the Yankees tonight, I would have done the following things:
1) If you're keeping Phil fresh for game 5 if needed, I can understand pulling him out. But you had a SLEW of other relievers that could have pitched one inning with a five run lead.
YOU CAN'T HIT A FIVE RUN HOME RUN. Even if one of the relievers shit the bed, you could have brought in Joba to stop the bleeding. THERE'S NO FUCKING REASON WHY JOBA SHOULD HAVE BEEN IN TO PITCH BASES EMPTY WITH A FIVE RUN LEAD.
AND HE SHOULDN'T HAVE PITCHED TWO INNINGS.
If you pulled hughes for the seventh, have Viz or Farns pitch the seventh and then Joba 8, Mariano 9. That way, you have them available for tomorrow.
But no, Joe, in his infinite wisdom, thought that the Yankees were going to win the series tonight and had Joba go two innings.
THEY STILL HAVE TWO MORE ELIMINATION GAMES TO GO. THERE IS NO REASON JOBA SHOULD HAVE BEEN IN THERE.

Quick question. Why is this Joba guy so fragile?
TheGameHHH
10-07-2007, 06:25 PM
THERE IS NO REASON JOBA SHOULD HAVE BEEN IN THERE.
alright, lets say our relievers did shit the bed (which we can all agree was a possibilty). so they hit a grand slam and the yanks escape the inning with the one run lead. Joba let up a run in the 8th, thats 5 runs and now we're tied.

No. Its because Torre has killed every reliever they've given him outside of Mariano. So they tied his hands to keep him from ruining the jewel of their farm system. Joba is more important to the Yankee organization than Torre is.

The Yankees upper management.. Set up rules specifically prohibiting a move like tonight.. For every inning He went in the reg season he would get a day off.. So if he went 2 inns he cant pitch for 2 days.. It was designed to not allow Torre ruin his career by over using him like proctor or Vizcianco or the other countless RP..

here is the deal guys. You use pitchers when you need them. You didnt need them, so you shouldnt have done it. How bout this, assuming a GS woulda came, you dont have to let the reliever or hughes stay in for all those hitters. But when you dont have to worry, let the other guys try to steal you some outs. Look, someone had a point that we're facing Paul Byrd tomorrow and logistically, that means that we shouldn't need Joba.
But I don't want it to get to that point. The situation is, quite simply, is that the Yankees need to win two more games and *wasted* Joba - with 38 pitches, meaing that he's pitched almost 70 pitches in the last 3 days - for no reason.
I can understand you need to build up Joba's confidence, so throw him one inning. But there was no reason that Hughes, Farnsworth, or Viz pitches 7. It's absolutely, positively retarded. And if the Yankees have a one-run lead going into the eighth and Joe has no choice but to use Mariano for two innings, remember this fucking post.

THE JOBA RULES, AND WHY THEY EXIST.
When Joba Chamberlain was called up to the Yankees late this season, rumors and then confirmation came out about a set of guidelines that Brian Cashman and the Yankee front office had designed to make sure that Joe Torre didn't abuse and tire out one of their prized prospects.
They were known in the media as: "The Joba Rules".
Most people were amused by this, but the writing on the wall was clear: The Front Office could not and did not trust Torre with the bullpen. Torre isn't a first or second year manager. He's been with the Yankees for 12 years.
The Joba Rules were simple: If Joba pitched one inning, he got one day off. If he pitched two, he got two days off. He did not pitch more than two innings, and he had a set pitch count. He also didn't come in halfway through an inning; he would start an inning. Simple enough, as the Yankees were grooming Joba to be a starting pitcher next year.
As Joba pitched through August and September with just ridiculous stuff, it became evident that he was something special and the rumblings started that he was not a starter; he was in fact the heir apparent to Mariano Riviera. They had even said that for the playoffs, the Joba rules would be relaxed because of the need to win games.
Game 2 and Game 3 of the ALDS has shown without a shadow of a doubt how inept Joe Torre's bullpen management in and how even the most brilliant baseball minds (Cashman) can be undone by someone with great people skills but a 2 cent mind for pitching.
On Friday night, Chamberlain pitched two innings gave up a Yankee lead because of a literal infestation. He threw 25 pitches in 1.2 innings worth of work. Granted, because of the bugs and the fact that he gave up the lead in the game which the Yankees eventually lost, he was going to need some work to get his confidence back.
He got a day off yesterday, and it was all hands on deck for an elimination game tonight.
So what happens?
The Yankees have a six run lead and Phil Hughes, who has thrown 63 pitches, is unbelievable going into the seventh.
So... if you have a Young pitcher who has thrown 63 pitches going into the seventh inning, what do you do?
Most people would assume the obvious, especially with a five run lead. Hughes pitches the seventh, Joba or perhaps someone like Kyle Farnsworth the eighth, and then Mariano the 9th.
Instead?
Torre sends Joba out for the seventh inning. And he mows everyone down. OK, great. Joba got his work in, he got his confidence back. Throw someone out there in the 8 and then Mariano in the 9th.
Instead?
HE SENDS JOBA OUT AGAIN, FOR HIS *FOURTH* INNING OF WORK IN THREE DAYS.
And of course, Joba over pitches, giving up a run, and ending the 8th throwing 38 pitches, makes his pitch count over 60 pitches in the last three days.
What does this mean?
Torre, who had no reason to keep Joba in for a second inning, who had no reason to pull Hughes, has now destroyed his bullpen's lynchpin availability going into GAme 4 tomorrow.
Just remember this, when the Yankees are nursing a one run lead going into the 8th tomorrow. And if Torre sends Joba out in the 8th inning, or better yet, sends Mariano for 2 innings worth of work... well, it explains the ineptitude of one Joe Torre.

Here's the adjustment: your second best reliever is unavailable and your best reliever doesn't really do that well with two innings of pitching after pitching an inning the night before.
Hughes should have stayed in and Joba should have pitched one inning at most. Torre's a moron, and HHH is incorrect.

So... if you have a Young pitcher who has thrown 63 pitches going into the seventh inning, what do you do?

Perhaps going deeper with Hughes, but no Viz or Farns against a win or go home situation against the best comeback team in the AL. I made that fact up, but I know they're good bc TBS said so! Oh and you get no argument on the torre moron point. He likes turtles.

i think, and i could be wrong, that during game 1 or 2 TBS did show a stat that had the angels as the best AL comeback team this year. i think its safe to say that everyone agrees Joe should have stuck with The Franchise and he's an idiot for taking him out.

Thank you for picking up the slack for me. Just what I was thinking. Even worse, I can't imagine Joba being able to pitch tonight if needed. I know it's still an elimination game and everyone is available but still, what can you expect from him after all those pitches? If you throw him out there what are you gonna get? And it worse because Mussina is pitching. He's not going to go deep.
Get ready for Farnsworth time tonight. Pray.

We need to POUND Byrd tonight if we wanna stay alive. Given Wang's last outing, I don't think we're gonna get the typical 7+ innings of 1-run ball from him that we got during the regular season. And since Joba NEEDED to pitch 2 innings in a 5-run game last night, he's probably not gonna be available (great job, Joe). If we wanna have a shot, we gotta get on Byrd early.

The thinking behind it is Joe doesn't believe in getting relievers up and down. Relievers don't like it, and Torre is a player's manager. But that's why he constantly gets caught with his pants down and/or makes pitchers go too long. Because HE HAS NOBODY WARMING UP behind them. Not even soft tossing. Its not an accident, its his operating philosophy.

Damn. All the players love Torre. Blah blah blah. Stop it with those stories already. We get it.
i am sure they all love their mom's too, does that mean they should be managing

Wang is a different pitcher at home vs the road vs. Cleveland, just saw the stats. Also, Kruk brought up a great point that Wang was throwing all his breaking pitches too hard taking that said break out of the pitch resulting in little movement or flat pitches. Wang was working on extended break that time, and this time it's short so it may work. I hope not, but power pitchers need the normal rest, not pitchers like Wang. However, the Tribe may have a tell on Wang that erases all this diatribe.

Wilbon and Kornheiser picked Cubs/Yanks and Phills/Yanks respectively.......both of them are outside of NY and are two of the most respected sports writers in the business. Please stop with your blind hatred. All you do is accuse people of being homers but then you make moronic statements like that.
Well funny enough the exact two guys you quote made my point on PTI today! Both were ripping each other for making the picks they did by ignoring the stats and not knowing a fucking thing about either team. In fact, they had trouble naming players on either team and called each other morons for it. It's the problem with this league hands down. And for TBS to downplay the upcoming series as it did, is simply moronic on a whole new level. Thanks for bringing up those two!

If you dislike their opinion why watch their show on a consistent basis? I think you're just looking for reasons to be angry at this point. (note the use of the winky smilie)

Hey, I love their show and they were man enough to admit to the bias and lack of overall league knowledge. It does kill their MLB credibility and that of most writers overall, but they are entertaining.

"One Nut" Kruk's point was very true. you could see Wang was throwing too hard after the 7 days off. We'll see what happens in a few minutes.
