Jon Miller does the play-by-play in MLB 2k8 this year. One of his commentary bits for Howard is "Here's one of my all-time favorites to watch, Ryan Howard."

It's not a stock line, with the name inserted, because he doesn't do it for any other player that I've noticed.

So, yeah, he was probably a little too happy.

dear omar, why would you sign luis castillo to a 4 year deal. he is useless.

Two questions:

1) Why did Willie go back to Castillo in the 2-hole? Church handled it quite well and the whole lineup clicked.

2) Did I miss something happening to Pagan? Why hasn't he started the last two games. I love Endy, and I understand (sort of) a one game spell (3 weeks into a season with plenty of days of so far including a rain out), but why two games?

And give me more Damian Easley. He was great when he came into that 14 inning game with 2 singles in the hole. Castillo can't even lay done a clutch bunt. What fucking goat. Worst contract of Minaya's tenure.

Nick Evans, Josh Petersen and Dan Murphy are also destroying the ball, and they can all play 1st.

But its still fairly early, I personally though Carp was finished as a prospect last year, maybe he moves to AAA in a few weeks

I'd say Fernando Tatis or Michel Abreu are a better bet.

Don't rule out them keeping three catchers, if Castro ever gets back.

SNY has added Harold Reynolds to its stable of in-studio analysts. He’ll make his first appearance in a part-time role on Friday, before the Mets face the Braves, alongside Lee Mazzilli and Matt Yallof. (Hopefully they’ll get a longer table for when Darryl Strawberry makes his appearances.) You may remember Reynolds working from 1996-2006 on ESPN’s Baseball Tonight, until an ugly parting.

Sigh.

Brian Schneider has been sent to New York with an infected left thumb that may force him to the disabled list.
If Schneider avoids the DL, the Mets could cut Brady Clark, with the idea of going to with Gustavo Molina as a backup catcher until Moises Alou is activated. Molina is likely to be added either way. Raul Casanova could have some short-term value in NL-only leagues.

Walked out for 5 mins and the bases are fcukin loaded!

I think he can make a huge impact on the lineup ... certainly won't fix the pitching and defensive woes, but him being in the lineup will not only add his production, but should help Wright and Beltran by adding some protetion ... there's no reason to throw them strikes right now.

I am thinking the opposite ... Smoltz has 4 straight games giving up 1 run or less ... how many 41 year old pitchers ring up a 5th? It's cold and nasty and I think he'll have trouble getting loose. The Mets need to win the series, they hit better yesterday ... I'm holding out hope.

OUCH!....I'm surprised you guys haven't jumped on this from the Post today:

DELGADO ON HIS WAY OUT AT FIRST

By JOEL SHERMAN

April 26, 2008 -- WE know how this ends for Carlos Delgado with the Mets. We might not know the exact date or the exact term, be it designated for assignment or outright release, but we see the bread crumbs now heading toward the exit.

First, Delgado was dropped in the lineup. Last night he did not start against a righty, Braves rookie Jair Jurrjens. Willie Randolph publicly tries to minimize the relevance of such maneuvers. What else can he do?

His first baseman makes $16 million, and his employer isn't quite ready to dine on that contract. Nevertheless, Randolph's actions toward Delgado are going to speak louder than his words. And his words should not exactly comfort Delgado.

Given a direct chance to support Delgado yesterday, Randolph provided the kind of lukewarm endorsement you would expect Hillary Clinton to give Barack Obama.

"I can't predict what he will do [statistically]," Randolph said. "I have confidence he will get going and have a decent year for us."

Now imagine those tepid words said with the same enthusiasm you would supply reading the ingredients in toothpaste, and you get the full picture.

The Mets cannot pretend what is going on with Delgado is a blip, because blips don't last a year and a month. There was always a rate of exchange with Delgado - accept the poor defense get 35 homers and 110 RBIs. But the defense is worse than ever, and the offense would be unacceptable for a middle infielder in 1968.

On a night when Shea fans again were in open hate with the home team, Delgado felt their wrath after a ninth-inning pinch-hit strikeout. He was hardly the lone culprit. The Mets managed two hits. Atlanta won 6-3.

It is hard to imagine the Mets offense ever taking off if Delgado continues on this path: one homer, nine RBIs and a .555 OPS, the second worst among 28 qualifying first basemen (Pittsburgh's Adam LaRoche is at .429). At this point, Delgado's 24 homers and .781 OPS that so appalled the organization and Mets fans last year would be a godsend.

Nevertheless, with Delgado two months shy of his 36th birthday, we should expect regression rather than rebound. That the Mets did not protect themselves for this contingency off of Delgado's plummeting 2007 is a real blemish for Omar Minaya. Nobody on the roster is a full-time answer.

Mike Carp is tearing up Double-A. But three scouts said the 21-year-old lefty thumper said is not ready for the majors. "I like him," one scout said. "But he is a level-to-level guy who is going to have to do Triple-A, as well, because he has a lot still to learn."

If the Mets had a real internal answer, Delgado's leash would be even shorter. They need an outside solution (Baltimore's Kevin Millar?).

In reality, players such as Delgado are becoming extinct in the majors. Fading, aging sluggers Barry Bonds, Mike Piazza and Sammy Sosa did not get jobs, and the Blue Jays just fired Frank Thomas. If the Mets and Yankees did not have sizeable investments, Delgado and Jason Giambi might be unemployed, too, though Giambi has begun to show signs of life that have yet to touch Delgado in 2008.

The contract only will protect Delgado for so long. The Mets have championship designs, and in the past 25 years, just one champion has had a regular first baseman older than 32 (the 2001 Diamondbacks with 37-year-old Mark Grace).

It is hard to see these Mets fulfilling their quest with such minimal first base output, which is why it is hard to see Delgado holding his job all year.

The only guy that is really on the market that I can think of that they could sign is Dan Johnson formerly from Oakland.

He had a good rookie year, but has been pretty horrible since.

Buster Olney had a thing up on ESPN today about the Mets dealing with the Pirates for Xavier Nady who's been blistering hot.

But what do the Mets really have to trade at this point? Fernando Martinez is really the only desirable chip they have.

I don't think Delgado's going anywhere...there's just not a lot of options for them at this point.

Maybe they could move Heilman...he's still relatively young and someone might take a chance on him as a starter.

Bullshit. Of all the booing that has occured, Delgado is probably the most worthy of it (Heilman is right there too)

Not only is he not earning his paycheck at the plate, he's costing us games in the field.

When the fans call for the curtain call you take it, Wright pleaded for him to do it (a la Franco/Beltran) and he didnt...So not only did he disrespect the fans, he ignored the franchise.

Delgado Q & A

April 28, 2008
Q & A with Carlos Delgado
So here are THE NUTS and BOLTS questions and answers from Carlos Delgado’s entertaining 20 minutes of give and take with reporters a little while ago about the most talked-about “curtain” since Jamie-Leigh Curtis’ mom had hers shredded in the original “Psycho” (Read: Not the one with Vince Vaughn!!)

First of all, Delgado didn’t recall ever taking curtain calls besides the ones he described Sunday (4-HR game, and 400th HR), despite A-Rube’s research revealing four others.

Anyway, onto to the Q and A…

Q. What did you think of the uproar about your decision to snub the curtain-call?

A: Number One, I don’t listen to the radio shows. Number Two, I don’t know why you call it a decision. It’s not a decision. Yesterday we talked about the situation and I thought that there are moments, and then there are moments. I don’t think that was the moment (for a curtain call). I also said (Sunday) that we appreciate the fans, and the support of the fans, but we’re here to play a game. And we’re usually playing a team on the other side of the dugout. And that’s what we are trying to pay attention to. At the end of the day, the big story is that we took two out of three to Atlanta and that’s about it.

Q: Are you surprised it took on a life of its own?

A: You get surprised in New York? Wouldn’t you be surprised if it wasn’t?

Q: How will this impact your relationship with the fans?

A: I really don’t know the answer to that question. I think the only thing I can do is be honest. They asked me questions that had nothing to do basically with the game. I gave an honest answer, and that’s the way it should be. We understand that the fans here are very passionate about the game. What we need to do is just go out and play baseball.

Q: Do you like to get booed?

A: It doesn’t feel good. I’m not going to lie to you. But you have to kind of block it. You have to go out and perform. That’s your job, go out there and play the game. You have to play better, simple as that.

Q: Will this be an ongoing distraction to you and team?

A: I don’t think so. We just have to go out and play baseball. The fans, they realize the game is more important than anything else. If we go out and play a good game, I’m sure there’ll be something to talk about for a couple of days. If it rains all night, you guys (reporters) have to write something, huh?”

Q: Were you sending a message to fans?

A: No, it had nothing to do with that. I hit a solo home run in the bottom of the seventh. We’re winning by two, all I did was just add another run. Like I said, there are moments, and there are moments. I didn’t think that was the right moment. It wasn’t like a walk-off home run, it wasn’t a tiebreaking home run. We’re in April, which is good. It’s good because we won, and it’s good because we took two out of three from their best two pitchers. And that’s the way it should be.

Q: Have you turned them down before?

A: When you have 434 home runs, there’s a couple of times they clap. I have a great deal of respect for the game and for the opposition. You don’t want to get into doing something you’re supposed to be doing, and waiting on the top step waiting for someone to give you a curtain call.

Q: 24 hours later, do you agree with your decision?

A: What is the decision? Every time I hit a home run or someone makes a good play, we have to make a decision whether we go out and acknowledge this or acknowledge that? This is not baseball.

Q: But players aren’t asked for curtain calls every game.

A: If we go out there and start going crazy and start throwing no-hitters and hitting home runs, what are we going to do, just go out on the top step every time and acknowledge the crowd?

Q: You’ve been known to take stands before (like with “God Bless America).

A: I think I was very clear. Once again, I appreciate the support and I appreciate the fans being supportive of us, but I don’t think it was the right moment. It’s got nothing to do whether I was hitting .150 or .450. It was a solo home run in the bottom of the seventh inning. That’s the way I look at it, if some people don’t see it that way, I’m sorry, maybe I’m like old-school that way.

Q: What would it take for you to take a curtain call?

A: 500 home runs. World Series.

Q: Did the fact they were booing you earlier contribute to not coming out?

A: You’re asking me to react what other people do, in this case 45,000 people. I’m a smart man, but I’m not that smart.

Q: Is you relationship with the fans important to you.

A: Of course, it’s important. We want to get that support, especially at home, because when you go on the road, you don’t expect it. I think I was clear, it’s not nice when they boo you, sometimes unfairly, but who am I to say? I’m not going to stand on the top step and say don’t boo. I think it’s wrong, but nobody’s going to listen to me. All I’m saying is we want the fans to be on our side. We haven’t been playing that great, all we have to do is play better.

Q: Would you be surprised if this affects your relationship with the fans?

A: Sometimes you do things and you have to live with it. If that’s the case, that’s the case. But what am I going to do, turn around and say, ‘Willie I’m not going to play because they’re booing me?’ I don’t think that’s going to happen today, sir.

Q: Did any teammates try to convince you what to do, one way or the other?

A: Convince me? No. Julio Franco’s not here.

Q: Did anyone encourage you to not give the fans the satisfaction?

A: No, no, definitely not.

Q: Have the fans been fair to you and the team so far?

A: Fair? That’s the one thing that you never find out in baseball. Nothing is fair in baseball. You can control what you do, not what other people do. All you have to do is go out and play and do the best you can. Obviously, the fans here are a little more outgoing than some other places. It is what it is. It goes both ways. You do good, they let you know. You do bad, they let you know, too. That’s why you have to keep it in perspective so you don’t get caught up in the fan game, for lack of a better term. Go and play the game. You know they’re there, because they definitely let you know.

Q: Do you think it’s because they had hearts broken last year?

A: I think so. But it is what it is. Thinking about last year isn’t going to make you play better this year. The only thing I hope is they understand it’s a new year, it’s a clean slate. There’s a lot of history in this game. It’s been here 125 years. If you start going back through the years to 1969 to 1986, you’ll never be happy. I like to live in the present, that’s the way I look at it.

Q: When hometown fans boo the home team, does that bother you?

A: It doesn’t feel good, it’s not a good feeling when someone is booing you. It hasn’t happened (like this) anywhere else. But I haven’t had such a bad stretch anywhere else either. I’m not happy about it, but I understand. It’s to up to us to play better.

Q: Will this contribute to staying or leaving when your contract is up after the season?

A: You will never know about the treatment of the fans until you’re there for a long period of time. I’m here, this is my third year, this is the last year of my contract, right? The most important thing is we have a competitive team. If you do good in NY, you’ll be on top of the world.”

Q: What do you think of Heilman and Schoeneweis constantly being booed?

A: Just for throwing ball one? If it doesn’t feel good to me, I always try to be there for my teammates and try to comfort them for what they go through. If I was in their shoes, it wouldn’t feel good either. But what can you do? Throw your glove and go and pick a fight with the guys in the stands? You don’t do that. All you do is hope they get a 1-2-3 inning and next day come out and get a 1-2-3 inning and they do well. In Schoeney’s case, he’s pitching pretty decent. I don’t know the numbers exactly. I think (the booing) has carried over from last year. I think it’s unfair, but once again, what can I do? Nothing. We just have to play better.

Q: Would you ask them to stop booing?

A: Me? A Puerto Rican kid in the middle of the city? Are you serious?

Q: Is this turning into an us against them thing?

A: Not at all … Not by any means. We don’t want to get caught up in that game with the fans. We’re playing against the team on the other side, not how the fans are going to react, one way or another, to what happens on the field. We cannot control that.

Q: Have you thought about what would’ve happened if you just took the curtain call?

A: I have no idea. What was I supposed to do? I’m just curious. Am I going to stay out there until they start booing again? I don’t know.

Q: Do you think you’ll be booed tonight or in your next game?

A: Why do you guys like the word surprised? I get surprised when my kid does something I’ve never seen before. All the other stuff, I can deal with.

Q: What happens when you see fans one-on-one?

A: I don’t walk around the city, I live outside (the city). But people usually are a lot nicer to you when they’re one-on-one. Then, you get all the psychology stuff, peer pressure, you go in (the Stadium) and get a couple of beers and do what the other guy does, but I don’t play that. It’s your money, you pay $10 for a beer, that’s your money.

Q: Was this longer or shorter than the God Bless America interview?

A: It’s definitely been a lot more entertaining.

Especially after Buck Martinez dissed them on Baseball this Morning...this morning. They were talking about Zito and Hampton, then just about Hampton and then the injuries to the Braves. With Hampton still out, Glavine just coming back and Smoltz and Hudson not looking right in their last starts, this is the time for the Phillies, when they get Rollins and Victorino back to really pull away in this division. I think the consensus opinion (right or wrong) about the NL East right now is that the Mets are trying to hold the fort a little bit longer until they get some of their guys back (Pedro, Duque, Alou, Schneider) and settle down their bullpen a little bit.

The schedule, outside of four games in Arizona, is pretty favorable to the Phils over the next month, and they have most of their parts healthy, so if they're going to make a move and pull into a little bit of a lead, now would be the time.

If the teams are still bunched within a game of each other or even closer in about a month, I'd say that plays back to the Mets' favor at that point, because they should be getting guys back healthy, which could set them on a nice run.

So really, this is kind of where the Phillies should make their move if they're going to.

Why is Heilman put into any spot where the game is still close anymore? Oh hey Aaron here's 7-8-9 in the order

Lets let the first two get on base in a two run game!

Theres two inherit problems with Heilman

1. He sucks
2. He sucks so much that hes destroyed any trade value he had

Willie Collazo is doing great in AAA, I'd rather have him up here at this point.

He's really got to get his shit together soon...Letting him pitch at home is probably destroying him at this point, but trading him will be futile I suppose.

He's really collapsing right in front of us. He's been demoted from his 8th inning duties ... now they're bringing him in only to start an inning so he doesn't inherit runners? What's the next step ... making him the long reliever in blow outs?

They all seriously need to take some bunting practice. Reyes, Pagan, Castillo, they've all looked awful bunting. They've all been regularly guilty of showing bunt with one strike and then pulling back as strike two sails past them. Willie had infield practice last week. It's time for another fundamental review.

He doesn't want to swing because he knows that he's going to ground out. Pathetic, that works for an 3 hitter, not a 2. Swing the bat or get dropped to 8. Move Church up to 2 once Alou gets back and protects Delgado.

As long as he only implodes once every 5-6 starts it won't be so bad ... but I am with you on the re-signing. He's got to be up there on the list of most frustrating 15+ game winners. Julio Franco, who had been playing in the Mexican League, confirmed that he is retiring from baseball.
Franco was hoping to play in the majors at age 50, but he didn't help the Mets or Braves last season and there was no interest in him entering 2008. Franco finishes his career with a .298/.365/.417 line, 173 homers and 281 steals in 23 seasons over a 26-year span. Had any team believed him in the late 90s, he could have gotten to 3,000 hits. Still, that wouldn't have made him a Hall of Famer. He was a three-time All-Star, but he lacked defensive value even in his days as a second baseman, he never finished higher than ninth in his league in OPS and he never drove in 100 runs in a season.

So long Julio.

Pelfrey wasn't "awful" so much as he was frustrating.

I don't want to even count how many times he had hitters ahead in the count and then fell behind.

He struggled putting guys away from the get go.

I think he might have one start left to prove himself, or they might give Armas or Vargas a call.

Peterson is going to start taking some heat pretty soon I think, between Ollie being up and down, Heilman being an absolute disaster and Pelfrey not making a big step forward, he might be a little less untouchable.
